The "Nine Acre Dust" can be found also on the "Charlatans vs. the Chemical
Brothers" EP. There are also 3 other mixes of Toothache on it. Highly

I think that it was supposed to be the follow-up to "Me In Time" but the
failure of that single prompted the band to move in a different
direction.

I actually prefer the Goodier version. Also, I think that it is actually a

He used to do this on "Happen To Die", but they haven't played that
song on their recent North American tours.
Personally, I liked it when he introduced "Then" (I think) as Joy
Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart".

concerning Quadrophenia, i own the movie myself! took me around 7
months to find it at a video store but i did find it. and if you
do want some insight into the mods then i highly recommend this movie
or even if you are not into mods, the movie itself is a classic example
of growing up as a young teen. fabulous movie! also, for you blur fanatics,
phil daniels is the lead role in it. you know, "parklife". anyways
thats my tid bit...

When did they skip philly? I guess the last time I saw them here was
about a year and a half ago when they played the TLA. I didn't even
realize that they had toured again.

According to the letter that the band sent out to their fan club, Andy
Bell and the rest of the band will stay together, but under a new name.
I'm not sure what Mark Gardner's future plans are.
Ride was one of the most wonderful bands to come out of the UK in
the 1990's. I always felt that they were very similar to the charlatans,
despite being part of different "scenes" (Madchester vs Shoegazing).
Was anyone lucky enough to see the two bands play together in
Europe last year?

Is it different from the Chemical Brothers remix (of Nine Acre Court) on the
Toothache single?

This topic was briefly discussed on the list, but the discussion didn't lead
anywhere...I had mentioned that I saw/heard the song (which is called
"Between 10th and 11th") on my Japanese video from 1991which I got from Hiro
(she was (and I hope still is) on the list). I liked the song a lot and
asked if people on the list knew if it was ever released officially, but no
luck - noone replied...

How reliable and recent is this information? It seems like there is a new
split-up rumor re: Ride every month and last thing I read was that they
were slated to release a new album this spring.

I already mentioned that the break-up is official, but the album will still
be released.
It is called Tarantula and is due out in mid-march. It will be released on
Creation in the UK and Elektra world-wide. The first single is due out
in February.

O.k then. Right on Sunday a visit to Camden market is essential just for the
experience of the toilet that is camden town tube station. The market itself is
very busy and there are a few good record stalls. It is also worth visiting
Camden in mid-week on Tuesday the camden palace holds the feet first club an
indie night with a live band playing around midnight. If you want to be really
sad go to the Good Mixer (Inverness Street) its where menswear used to drink.
If you want to buy records/cds i'd recomend tottenham court road area which
houses the mainstream virgin mega store and vinyl experience which has lots of
rarities.
There are lots of indie clubs its easy to find out about them. Just walk down
camden high street and you will have flyers thrown at you.
I personally would recommend popscene at the la2 on friday and feet first at
the camden palace on tuesday.

Yes you should definitly go. The bands you mention Bluetones, fluffy, the
cardigans and Heavy Stero are currently on the nme brat bus tour in England and
I am going to see them in London on Monday. This is my opinion of them
Bluetones: Fabulous, good tunes gorgeous singer
Cardigans: Very relaxing. Are you male or female. Nina is very pretty
Fluffy: I do not like them, All female "Rock" outfit
Heavy Stero: sound like glam rockers especially Sleep Freak. I love them.

I think this is the first time I've used this list.
I thought I'd be of some help seeing as I live in good old swinging London.
The first place I can suggest is Popscene on a Friday night at the
Astoria 2. It's a sort of Britpop / Mod nightclub that plays Oasis, Small
Faces, Stone Roses, Pulp, Charlatans etc. I think that if there is such a
scene as 'Britpop' then I suppose that this night is at the very heart of it.
You often get bands who had played at the Astoria 1 next door stumbeling
in after the gig. I met Rob from the Charlatans in here after the show at
the Astoria in the summer, the same happened when Marion played there.
The best night that I've had in there though was when Cast played a few
months back. Bonehead and Noel had been at the gig and came in with the
band for a few drinks. Noel recognised me from when I'd met him in Oxford
Street around the time when 'Whatever' came out and bought me a drink.
The next thing I know I'm with them for the rest of the night, with them
paying for the drinks, surrounded by loads of star struck girls.
Fucking tops!
My local pub in Stepney, 'Monty's' was were the Small Faces played some of
their first gigs and is a top pre-nightclub kind of place on a Friday.
Filthy McNasties in Islington is a top Irish pub and is Shane Mcgowan's
regular. When his mate Johnny Depp was in town he brought him and his
then girlfriend Kate Moss along. Top atmosphere, everyone's super friendly
and it's always packed.
Make sure you have a look at Camden Market on Saturday or Sunday morning.
Great place for Charlatans bootlegs and young people in general. This is
Britpop Central, people walk about looking like your favourite pop stars.
If your interested in dance, my favourite club is The Gardening Club in
Covent Garden. Always has top Djs like Jeremy Healy and Paul Oakenfold.
The Velvet Underground on Charing Cross Road is pretty cool to.

Just for the record, my favourite ever Charlatans song is Inside Looking
Out (should have been a single), followed by Can't Get Out Of Bed (story
of my life) and Then.

This is the NME bratbus tour, I'm going to the one at the Astoria on
Monday. Go just for the Bluetones , they're a bit special. A bit like
early Stone Roses.

It seems the two responses so far have directed you club- wise in London.
Now for shopping.... Camden Mkt is pretty fun, WHAREHOUSE is brilliant (
found on Oxford St, Bond St, and near Covent Garden ( I think on Long
acre... please correct me if I'm wrong on anthing as I moved from London 5
years ago now.), Shelly's has great shoes on Oxford St aswell, and there are
some lovely shops near Hampstead. Half way up Tottenham Court Rd there is
Paperchase ( a fun shop that I used to work at!), and a block further is
Habitat and Heals. On Gower St there is a beautiful bookshop who's name has
escaped me.... and on Scala, or else its Tottenham St, just behind Goodge St
Station on Tottenham Crt RD there is the best take away for jacket potatoes
called 'Anthony's'.... and cheap too!
Don't forget to wander down King's Road, there are a few really great shops
( not too many tho'!). If you wake up REALLY early one morning wander over
to the Portobello Mkt, if I am recalling the right one. ( I had been up all
night drinking wine when my mates and I went, as my nextdoor neighbor
decided to have a rave in his flat, and the bastard didn't even invite us.)
It's a really beautiful flower Mkt, or so I thought stumbling through at 6
a.m.! One a staurday morning you may want to wander thorough the longest
street market, its in Walthamstow at the end of the Victoria Line. It's
great fun, as there is so much going on. And you can pick up some pretty
inexpensive fruit for breakfast!
I would suggest my favorite clubs, but they probably don't exist anymore. My
best advice for exploring London is to get beyond Leister Square and
Harrods, put your maps away and just wander.... you can never get lost as
there is always a tube station nearby, buses rolling past and a million cabs
which are pretty cheap, and well worth the few extra quid. This way you'll
discover the little shops and cafes, and other interesting things. If you
ask for help, you're best off to find someone working in a shop or cafe, as
it seems there are no Londoners left in London, especially in central
London! And if you ask someone on the street there's a 110% chance they're
foreign and won't know the correct answer!
If you're in Charing X Station, go into the Sockshop and say hello to my
devinely mad and beautiful mate Liz!

The Bluetones are playing here in Nottingham at the end of February and I
definitely want to see them live. They're one of those bands that have a
tendency to put their best songs on the B-sides of the singles. They
haven't released an album yet - that comes in Feb. Check out String Along
and Driftwood. A bit like early Charlies/Roses with *very* catchy tunes. I
think the Stereos may be Heavy Stereo - haven't heard much by them though.

If this comes up twice.... I'm NOT trying to waste anyones time, I'm just
not sure whats going on with it. :)
Well I certainly didn't mean to offend, but lets be realistic. If you
subscribe to one, or even fifty maillists, its your own responsibilty to
scan, or 'wade' through the headings of the listed e's and decide what you
fancy reading. THAT IS WHY YOU SUBSCRIBE!! If anything 'moaning' e's are
right up there with mindless flames, a waste of time for both those
interested in the topic or not.
I didn't post my e directly to the person who asked the question, as I
thought others may have some input. Yes, this is a Charlies maillist, but
there's only so much that can be said at times. I quite enjoy this list as
its topics reflect, to some extent, other interests that the subscribing
Charlie fans have. I think most recently there have been numerous

Well that's my little say for the day...... don't be a moany old cow Robyn,
life is too short and interesting to get all bogged down with trivialities.
SO LETS DISCUSS THE CHARLIES....
Does anyone know what the band is up to these days? I haven't a clue, as I
haven't picked up an NME in yonks.
I'm still looking for a copy of Indian Rope on cd....... yes I realize its
wishfull thinking, but, does anyone know of an extra copy?
If anyone wishes to respond to my speal, pls do so on the list ( for those
not interested, just ignore the London header) or at cjack@islandnet.com.
I'm terribly open minded and welcome your thoughts if you fancy taking this
any further.
However I'm more interested in knowing about the Charlatans..... and I hope
the girl who originally posted the London query, and anyone else interested,
found some useful info in the responses. I know I did ( club- wise), as I'll
be that way in the spring to visit my cats! ( one of which is named Orange,
'cos life is like a bag of revels and I'm looking for the orange one.)

Great song! I love the way it starts out mellow and then suddenly explodes.
The Charlies manage to create a build up after that and reach a climax
towards the end..Magical! It really grabs me and carries me away...I wish
they'd play it live! (Maybe they have; has anyone seen/heard it live?) Does
anyone have the lyrics to this song as well as the lyrics to the rest of the
songs from "Up to our hips"? I'd love to have a copy. Please help!

what about that double A-side of "just lookin'/bullet comes"?
i think they prob'ly should have released them as two separate singles....
"bullet comes" is the funkiest thing i've heard from the Charlies'
(talk about some real "northern soul")
and it got kind of lost with that double-A thing...
btw, has anyone seen a poster size version of the cover of that single?

Actually I think that Hot Licks was NOT a boot as far as legalities go. It
was a legitimate release on a label that got permission to use it, but that
permission either came from the venue or the promoters, NOT THE BAND. It's
kind of like Ride's "Live Light," which just came out on Mutiny Records
without the consent of the band. I think.

It was actually my understanding that the Hot Licks CD was a release through
the Charlatans UK fan club, and only (originally, at least) available to
members of said club. I bought my copy the first time I saw it which was in
the summer of 1993. However, I have seen many more copies floating about
(here in Los Angeles, anyway) in the past six months.

No. You've got "Hot Licks" mixed up with another live CD. The fan club
CD was recorded in Chicago between the first & second albums and
has a black cover with bananas on it. Its an interesting CD because it
contains the song "Between 10th & 11th" on it.

"Hot Licks" is not an official bootleg. It was legitimately released in
Italy because, under the old Italian laws (I think they've been changed
in the past 12 months), you could release live performances without
permission, as long as you paid royalties.
Its amazing how many copies of "Hot Licks" are out there. I think that
part of the reason is the sound quality is incredible, far better than
most boots you can find out there. Also, it is a great
performance...compare it to many of the Stone Roses boots out there.

Hmm. I saw Fluffy on Saturday in Bristol, as part of the NME Bratbus tour
and I thought they were pretty dire. They're all lovely girls, but their
music leaves a lot to be desired (4 bar chords from the rhythm guitar,
top string only from the bass player) and Amanda does tend to screech
into the microphone a bit too much.
But if you like that sort of thing.....

I saw the Bluetoines in Wolverhampton the other nuight and they were quite good
They were only hampered by a crowd full of children all getting in the
way and falling over. I@m sorry to say that the Cardigans were better
however, and that Heavy Stereo are shite (It really takes the piss when
someone starts ripping off Oasis riffs
P.S. is it true that the Charlies are recording another album?
