I read that interview myself. But that was just around it's release, and it's
normal they feal they have given all their best, and that they don't have
anything more to give. But now they've been on tour again, and have propably
got some new inspiritation. I have read in an interview after the one in MM,
and there Tim actually said he wanted to make the albums fast. It really
sounded like he wanted to make a new album pretty quickly in that interview. I
hope and believe they won't wait too long before they release some new stuff.
But then again, you never know with the Charlatans. I know the next thing
they'll do will be great, though.
Anyway, I've heard rumours that they were going to appear along with Stone
Roses and Black Grape at Spike Island (I'm suddenly not quite sure that was
the righ name, but anyway..) in May 1996, so that's at least one concert.
I am also lookimg forward to when the tribute album for The (Small) Faces are
being released in 1996. The Charlatans are contributing with a song there
along with Ride, Primal Scream and a bunch of others.
cheers,

Hello all,
For those interested, The Beat! Records in Sacramento, CA has several copies
of the Charlatans Hot Licks bootleg CD for sale. The disc was recorded in
Italy in 1992, and has very good audio. You can mail order, and the phone
number is 916-446-4402.
I'm also selling a live Stone Roses bootleg CD called "Stoned Kids". It was
recorded on 5/21/95 at the Avalon Club in Boston. I'd like $25 which includes
postage. Email if interested.

I can't reccomend this CD enough! The sound quality is amazing...far
better than most boots you find and it really demonstrates how good
the charlies are in person. Tim's mumbling is hilarious...especially
when he promises that "this is the last time you'll ever here this song"
(The Only One I Know).
More than anything, its worth it for the killer version of "Happen To
Die". Its about 10 minutes long...dead dead good! "Can't Even Be
Bothered" also stands out as a song much better live than on the
studio recording.
My only complaint about this CD is that it doesn't have "Sproston
Green" on it, but at least its on the "Isolation" CD.

Just a funny note for everyone...
My little cousin, who's only four years old, likes the Charlatans and the
Stone Roses more than anything else!!!
Seriously!
I take him to kindergarten every morning, and he always asks me to play
*the Organ Song*(The Only One I Know) by *sharlans*, or *the Jungle Song*
(Breaking into Heaven by the Stone Roses). His other faves are *the Drums
Song* (Fools Gold), *the Guitar Song*(Wonderwall) by *Ueyses* , *the Ghost
Song* (Echoes by Pink Floyd), *I bin uatchin' you* by *the Policemen*, and
*the Funny Song*(Intermission by Blur - is that what it's called? I'm not
sure, but it's the 9th song on Rubbish...And he REALLY likes all of the
songs mentioned! He likes them more than the soundtracks to Lion King,
Aladdin, etc. He even has the same haircut as John Squire and Tim Burgess
but he's blond. He cracks me up!

Hi everyone!
Since the list has been a bit slow, maybe we could do some kind of a music
taste survey...Let's list our top 10 favorite
bands/musicians/artists/songwriters (Charlatans not counting of course), and
our top 15 favorite albums (no Charlies stuff here either). I've always
found it helpful to get exposed to new music (meaning music I haven't heard
before) by recommendations from other people who's passion also is music.
I'll start first:
top 10 bands
0.Beatles
1.Stone Roses
2.Pink Floyd
3.Slowdive
4.The Cure
5.Orbital
6.Oasis
7.New Order
8.Depeche Mode
9.The The
top 10 albums
0. Orbital - brown album (Orbital 2?)
1. Stone Rose - Stone Roses
2. Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust
3. Pink Floyd - Meddle
4. The Cure - Disintegration
5. The Pixies - Bossanova
6. The Smiths - Strange Ways Here We Come

10. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
11. Oasis - Definitely Maybe
12. Moodswing - Moodfood
13. Beatles - Abbey Road
14. The The - Mind Bomb
Lastly, maybe we could name one CD that we couldn't imagine living without.
Imagine if you were to live on an island for say a year, and you could take
only one CD with you - the one that you feel you won't get sick of listening
to for so long... I know that it's a tough choice, but let's try!

Funny, but so far I seem to be alone in my musical tastes. I like a lot of
the bands that've been listed, like Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses, 311, the
Verve, but none of 'em would make my top 10 list. Here, I'll show you:
The Pogues
Billy Bragg
They Might Be Giants
Ramones
Dead Can Dance
Velvet Underground
Jane's Addiction
Misfits
Velocity Girl
Pink Floyd
That's in no particular order. Top 10 albums is hard to narrow down, but
here goes:
Rum, Sodomy & The Lash---Pogues
Dark Side of the Moon----Pink Floyd
Flood---They Might Be Giants
News Of the World---Queen
The new Smashing Pumpkins(cant find it & dont remember the name)
Ziggy Stardust----Bauhaus
Ramones Mania---Ramones
Collected Robert Johnson vol.1
Saltarello---Dead Can Dance
Best of Jimi Hendrix(or something)

It seems like I listen to music that all of you listen to. But I was most
suprised by Niklas Hultin mentioning The Rosemarys. I've actually got that CD
only by chance, and I haven't heard nothing whatsoever about them. They sound
like a band a little too late for the Manchester scene, but it's OK!
Anyway, here's my list, at least for today, in no order:
Ride
The Verve
The The
Jellyfish
Stone Roses
Oasis
Blur
Lush
The Boo Radleys
The Real People
That's not enough of my favourite bands that I could've put in here, but those
were the first in my head.
Top 15 albums in no order:
The Real People - The Real People
Ride - Going Blank Again
The The - Dusk
Jellyfish - Bellybuttom
Airhead - Boing!
The Prodigy - Experience
Verve - A Storm In Heaven
Lush - Spooky
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Howard Jones - Humans Lib
Suede - Dog Man Star
Dodgy - Homegrown
The Lightning Seeds - Jollyfication
The Beautiful South - Welcome To The Beautiful South
Curve - Doppelganger
This is hard, because I love everything! Howard Jones sits deep in me, from my
childhood. It was my first big musical experience when I was 8 years, and it
was strong.
The one album I would need on an island except from the Charlatans' is:
The Real People - The Real People
That album is a classic, and for me it's timeless. It's sad they've been
forgotten!

I think they (the Rosemarys) try really hard to sound like Ride or Lush,
with some success. They have two albums out on Fox Records (California based

Cant help you with Spiritualized but as for Saint Etinne... well, they are
very much club oriented but not techno or the "eurobeat" stuff MTV plays.
Every once in a while they remind me of a less noir Portishead, though such
a comparison is far from correct. Actually, their material ranges from the
very dancy Pale Movie (of Tiger Bay, they latest) to more dub-oriented
material like "She's the One" from their debut Foxbase Alpha to retro-ish
ballads like "Hobart Paving" from So Tough. I haven't heard much of Tiger
Bay but I think it's a little bit more dance-oriented than their previous
two albums. Of So Tough and Foxbase Alpha, I recommend the latter more (if
for no other reason, it has a really cool cover of Neil Young's "Only Love
Can Break Your Heart"). Hope this helps some, maybe someone else can pick
up where I left...
Nik Hultin
P.S. I noticed that many people mentioned the Inspirals as one of their
faves. I'm currently working on an WWW page dedicated to them. For more
info, or if you can help me with material, e-mail me at:

8. The Cure
7. The Smiths
6. The God Machine
5. Blur
4. Smashing Pumpkins
3. Nine Inch Nails
2. The Stone Roses
1. Catherine Wheel -- this band rules!!!
recordings -- no particular order
Verve - the new one
Blur - Mordern Life...
The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow

The Stone Roses - Second Coming
Therapy? - Nurse
Smashing Pumpkins - Gish

As you can see from the above, I have a somewhat schizophrenic taste in
music. Am I the oldest one on this list at 35?
The new Chemical Brothers CD is really growing on me. Can anyone suggest
some similar artists to try out?
Cordially,

6. Phil Collins
7. Tears For Fears (well, I like Songs From The Big Chair)

First of all . . . hate the Beatles?
I know Michael Stipe said he thought they were elevator music, but come on!
My top bands, in no particular order at all:
The Jam, Pulp, Beautiful South, Echobelly, REM, Blur, The Verve, Suede . . .
I am kind of partial (perhaps due to geography) to the following bands:
Tracy Bonham, Jennifer Trynin . . . The Boston scene as it happens today
and as it evolves from day to day.
Albums that completely rock:
Um, anything and everythign by the Jam: Live Jam, Wasteland, Extras . . .
everything.
The Beautiful South-Miaow, Welcome to the Beutiful South
Echobelly-EGO, On
Supergrass-I Should Coco
Blur-Modern Life Is Rubbish
Pulp-It, His N' Hers (the new one's not out in the States yet :( )
Radiohead-The Bends
The Verve-A Northern Soul
REM-Chronic Town and everything UNTIL (and not including) Out of Time and a
few songs
from Monster (particularily Crush With Eyeliner)
Album I could not live without:
Echobelly-Everyone's Got One (I am a painter and that album really helped
me through an extremely difficult time in my life and work) or maybe, hm,
something by the Jam, but I can't bring myself to pick . . .
Bands that completely suck:
I agree with whoever started the list and I disagree with whoever it was
that like Pearl Jam.
And, puh-lease! Hootie and the Blowfish? I suppose you dig Dave matthews
and Phish as well. Those are the big pot-smoking frat boy bands where I'm
at.
Now I have a question which I'd like to pose:
My friend and I will be in London for two weeks in Late December/early January.
What should we definitely do/see?
What should we bypass?
AND, anyone know of any good shows at that time?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Lisa and everyone!

>just only mentions the ones that are a bit more odd.
Ok. I was the one who started this thread, and I appologize to the people on
the list who are tired of getting messages with "top 10" in the subject
line. I didn't expect this to get blown out of proportion...
All I wanted, was to see what other music Charlatans fans like. By sharing
our tastes, I thought that people on the list would know what to listen to
and look for in the music store, the next time they're there.
Recommendations from fans are a lot more helpful (in my opinion) than any
other source of exposure to music - radio, MTV, magazine reviews, etc.
So, for those of you who DID enjoy finding out what other bands are liked
by Charlies fans, I can compile a list with the bands that had the most
entries, and then a list of the ones that had only say 1 or 2, that is - a
list of the "more odd" bands.
>Well maybe no one agrees but that is the way I see it.
>AND........ Why isn't EARTHLING nowhere on the lists???
>I saw them 2 days ago here in Amsterdam and they definetely ruled.
See Lisa, that's exactly my point! I have never heard of EARTHLING before,
but now I know that it's a band that someone with a similar taste of music
likes and I would try to find their disc and listen to it...
Peace!

taking it a lil' too close to heart; let it die.

Has this ever happened to you...
I have one of those jobs where you sit around a lot. So I have a boombox at
my desk and listen on headphones most of the day. I was listening to "up to
our hips" for about the 100th time. It seems that everytime I get to Patrol
or Inside-Looking Out I totally loose concentration on whatever I'm working
on and I have to start groovin' to the music.
This album is just so awesome!!! Martin and Jon are soooo tight on rhythm,
awesome!!!
By the way, does anyone out there know what the heck "i never want an easy
life..." is all about. It a great, great groove, but I'd like to know what
they're trying to say. Any ideas?
Keep on groovin',

"So You Wanna Be a Star?" RAW: Dec 5, 1995.
Just follow these ten, Charlatans-approved easy steps to success:
1. Do some bastard's motor by putting bricks thru his windscreen when
he tells you your band's shit! (Tim, Cardiff, Sept90)
2. Use your mike lead to lasso bottle-throwing member of audience. (Tim,
Texas, Mar91)
3. Go on a world-class bender when your single scrapes a miserable 28 in
the charts. (Mark, every watering hole in the northern hemisphere,
Sept91)
4. Climb on a statue in York's Roman Baths and be ejected for your
troubles. Then do self-same thing in Battersea Park and get fined 500
notes for not having learnt the first time. (Tim, Mar92)
5. Have a punch-up between band members after keyboardist blows up organ
four nights running. (The lot of `em, Manchester, Jun94)
...next half later.
