=+-== welcome to jonas, biznatch ==-+-=
Hi, its that time again. Welcome to Jonas number Nine. Edicius
here, with some news for the new issue.
Well, not really that much news. Lemme think, just a few new
members, and new sites, and that's about it. Here:
We thank and welcome into the Jonas Family the following people this
time around: Radigan, for doing an article, and his board, Flight 409,
as a site, Shadow Tao, for doing a very nice story, and my apologies to
Akira, who was left off the member list last issue.
Also, sCandal, did a very nice ascii, which is seen in the jonas.nfo
file, Christopher Robin did a really keen ascii, and Twisted Terrorist
did a really coo ascii too. Apologies go out to Defective Mind, because
I left him off the member list too, last issue. :)
New sites, too. As forementioned, Radigans board, Flight 409.
Also, Neko's Green Eggs 'n Spam, White Power's Hero Time, and Asphixia's
Comtec. (I think that last one is Asphixia's, if not, please alert me.
:> Sorry.)
One thing that I would like to start in the coming issues, is a
'letters to the Editor' section. Any comments that you have about any
articles in Jonas, find me somewhere, and tell me them. Either email me
one some board that I'm on, msg me on irc (edi), or add them to
survey.txt (see next section). It'll be like a regular magizine, with a
response from me, and it'll be like Time or Newsweek or something. :>
Please, do me a major favor, fill out survey.txt, and get it to me.
Email me on a board, msg me on irc, or something. I would like to see
your opinions on Jonas. Thanks!
That's it. Enjoy the mag. Send me any comments you have, and if
you want to submit, read the jonas.nfo file included in the archive.
h3h3, h0h0. Read the dummer.con file, too.
Enjoy. Like Doug, I'm outa heeere.

.edicius' editorial.
Hi. My name's Tom, and I'll be your waiter tonight. May I interest
you in some drinks before your meal?
Well, its been an odd month, I guess you can say. Its been a month
of deaths and births. Shiver and Union both died this month, and then we
have new groups (with some promise) like Legend and Disco. Disco, to me,
seems like a new Union. I mean, look at it. Old Dirty Bastard, Hannabal
Lecter, Cash, and others. All former Union. Why didn't they just keep
Union alive, instead of letting it die, and making a 'new' Union? Odd,
eh?
Legend is a little different. They have a lot of former Acid
people. Somms topping the list. Hmm. Everyone was upset when Chromatik
left Blade, because he was the symbol of loyalty. ck.blade.95 was his
sig. But Somms, he's been in Acid as long as I can remember, since early
on, I would guess. I'm not too sure as to how long he's been in exactly,
but its been awhile.
The question I pose to the new groups everywhere is: If someone
like Somms leaves Acid to join a new group, what's to say he's not going
to leave after a pack or two after it gets boring? Its like the whole
January Union Syndrome. One big name jumps ship, they all do. Odd, very
odd.
Undergrown died as well. One of my favorite mags, but I wish Eerie
luck in the future.
In my opinion, Undergrown wasn't a mag that I looked to for
articles. He had a few articles, good ones in fact. But the thing I
will forever note Undergrown for is the reviews. Undergrown was one of
the first magazines in recent times to not only do reviews, but
constantly do reviews.
Now, there probably have been magazines in the past that have done
the same thing. But, if you look at the 'modern era' of Ansi Art, the
last year and a half or so, Undergrown was the first magazine to
accomplish that. Now, there are a lot of magazines that do reviews, but
Undergrown should be remembered as the first recent magazine to do it.
Bah, that probably didn't make sense, you know what I mean.
More things happening this month. Hoe (Hogs of Entropy) experienced
a sort of death and rebirth. Died was the old era of Mogel running the
'zine, born is the new era of James Hetfield running the 'zine. I wish
Jamesy luck with Hoe. I know he'll do good with it.
If you notice, this editorial, is one of the few that actually
mentions the art scene. I think I did a very good job with this issue,
not to be conceited. I believe this is defiantly the best issue of Jonas
to date.
One thing that I have tried to do all along, and finally, have
succeeded in doing, is transferring the magazine from an 'art' mag, to a
more diverse type of zine. In this issue, I tackle politics (see: why
clinton will win in '96), pornography on computers (see: cyberporn.. or
cyberfun?), and other articles, which I haven't gotten yet. :>
One reason I'm doing this, is because there are too many magazines
dedicated to the art scene. There aren't too many ezines that talk about
politics, music, and other nifty stuff. (Actually, Bitchslap #6 had some
very good articles, along with Infinity #4, but Infinity did have a
little too many flames ('Verb the Great' and 'Ragn Eerie' took away from
the content.)
Another thing that I'm thinking of doing, is transferring this
magazine from computer to paper. I'm seriously considering making this a
paper 'zine, so I can reach more people with it (and also make a few
cents on the side. :>) If you currently run a paper 'zine, contact me.
I'd like to talk to you. I'll print more information about Jonas
becoming a Paper 'Zine in the issue 10.
Hmm. That is about all I have to say. Enjoy the mag, I don't think
you will be disappointed. Thanks to everyone who has helped me with it.

radigan's angst.. .
composed by radigan.. .
- -- -----------------]
---] editors note [---
yeah. i know. i try to limit the amount of 'bitch' articles that
get turned into jonas, but hey. this is 'scene angst' at its finest.
---]
Sup nigz? Welp... I just have to write for Jonas because in the
last issue...number ate.. terminal velocity wrote an excellent article.
I think that the 'scene' has gone to hell.. i mean...he's right.. all
these people are going nuts about deez damn groups. People charge an arm
and a god damned leg for a fuckin' ansi. Hell, if you draw, you like
to.. you should not have to get people to pay for what you like to do.
Okay, I know all you ansi people say 'Well I ain't gonna waste my time
just to make this ansi for some guy I've never met'...well in a way j00
right! Okie...some of your work needs to be bought but to charge fuckin
$30 for a 50 line ansi is highway robbery. People have joined the scene
just to make money! And they are getting away with it.. but if you
really like to draw then do it.. charge for a few of your best pieces of
work..not everyone...
Terminal Velocity also said that the quality of work has gone to
hell.. this again is true and it's a fuckin' shame...some of you guys
have so much talent when it comes to drawing ansi and when people see
your best work they request work from you.. hell they even pay for it!
And when you lamuhs get that cash you say to yourself 'Hey, i could rip
this jerk off or just not do as good a job as i did to get into that
group.' then when you release your shit ( and i really mean shit) the
quality of the packs come down. This brings the whole concept of drawing
and groups to nothing. Hell, everyone and their mother are starting
groups... whether it be ansi, hpa, or warez. This is preposterous! (hope
i spelled that right ) I see some lame ass groups out there who have no
potential but i give them more respect than the better groups out there.
They at least try and improve their work and make it to the top. Whereas
the big ass groups just sit around and loose the quality of their work.
And as these small groups become bigger ( which is not very likely ) i
hope to hell the big groups look at these people for ideas.. maybe
they'll ALL learn some big lesson..
But on a brighter note, i sorta butted in on a conversation on
irc between a highly respect artist and another guy about how corrupt
some of these groups were. ( no names cause i ain't gettin' caught up in
this ) They said that the 2 biggest art groups in the scene were all
backstabbing liars. This humored me for quite some time. But anyway,
they said they were goin' to do sompin about this corruptness and i hope
to hell it works! Of course when i said i'd help clean up the scene all
i got was a 'Who the hell are you?!?' but i expected that because i ain't
all that popular.. but i wanted to help but they ignored me and went on..
but if they remember that conversation and would like to get people to
help then lets get on this and get these loosers out of da scene... and i
say 'loosers' in the highest respect because most of you guys can
really draw..
And also.. what da fuq is up with irc lately...it is 6/23/95 and
my hard drive was corrupted 3 weeks ago.. and before that irc wasn't all
that lame #ansi was actually fun to go into. But i come back and people
are saying how do i privately message some other guy.. or what is dcc /
xdcc. This is fuqin' ridiculous.. if you don't know what the hell it is
then you shouldn't be on irc yet. All i was gone for was 3 damn weeks
and with out me 'the scene' goes to hell hehe yah... like i make a
difference.. but anyway, it's true! all these damn lamah's are on irc and
have no clue who anyone is or how to do anything! these damn 13 year olds
get modems for their birthday and jump right into 'the scene' and try and
be cool with learning a damn thing first. some of their handles are lame
as hell too...but hopefully someone(s) can help me or anyone clean up the
scene..cause that's my goal for a little while..but if the guys i
mentioned in the previous paragraph really wanna do sompin' 'bout 'the
scene' then just /msg me on irc or something...cause it's going to hell
and it's not as fun as it should be!!!
hehe... phoey! my first article and i just about went off on the whole
`scene' but i don't give a flying fuck cause for the most part it's all
true..but if any of you nigz got feedback and wanna contact me on any of
this matter then /msg radigan on irc or email me at radigan@ios.com even
if you have negative thoughts about what i wrote i don't care...i just
wanna know what y'all think about it...eheh.. welp. thanks to terminal
velocity for givin' me sompin' to write about..i wanted to get that out a
while ago...
Eric. The boy who was a shoe. And an ansi critic.
A semi-short fable
Eric had not had an easy life. He was found on the doorstep of an orphanage
in Flushing, wrapped in towels. There he grew up, and in time, he learned
that Our-Lady-of-Chains orphanage was about the best shot he had. Eric grew
up with the other boys playing the games that boys his age play. Football
was a favorite pasttime, especially for Eric, who happened to resemble a
football. Years passed quickly for young Eric. His friends grew strong and
tall and Eric grew...leathery...
One humid city night, Eric and his friends were playing football in an alley.
'Andrew Young goes long... Here's tha pass...'
<crashtinklytinkle>
'Ohshitletsgo!'
'Eric!'
'Comonmanletsgo!'
'EhhRAACC!!'
The toss had landed Eric onto a keyboard. The room was dark and gloomy; only
the naked lady posters stared back from the darkness. Eric reached out and
turned on a dusty old computer. There, in a dark subdirectory, lied a hack
version of Telix. After a short time of modem learning, and a long time spent
staring at the naked ladies, Eric began to logon to several local boards.
Eric returned night after night to the dark room, slowly climbing the ladder of
eliteness. Eric had quite a following so he decided that he needed his own
'zine. Through all of this, Eric forgot about the other orphans and grew fat
and ...leathery.
Eric's 'zine, _sole_, slowly became a great success. Everyone envied Eric's
rapier wit and stunning knack for new artists. ACiD made him the director of
their new 'batch-file' division. Lord Jazz greeted him. Eric was the happiest
shoe in the world.
Then his world shattered.
He began calling the scene 'lame.' He started to tire of #ansi. Eric quit
all the groups and started to release on his own. His first pack did not
go over well, but it didn't matter, because Eric wasn't popular anymore.
The apartments light came on.
Eric eventually wound up in a Red Cross dumpster, and then a distribution
center. A bag lady bought him and wore him out, wearing him all across the
urine-stained streets of New York.
Moral: Somehow, somewhere, somebody is going to stick their foot up your ass
and run around in a bathroom.
Moral option number 2: The reflections of our respective worlds are influenced
by the interpretations we make of them.
Moral option number 3: I love pickney flanges. No. I _make_ love to pickney
flanges.
setting up at&t teleconferences.. .
composded by data ruckus.. .
- -- ----------------------]
Ok as you guessed from the header this file is how to set up at&t
teleconferences. First you need to know what kind of conference you will
be setting up. You can set up either an alliance or the more popular 800
dial in (You know 1-800-403-XXXX). The difference is that on an alliance
teleconference you dial the parties that will be on your conference. On
an 800 dial in your parties dial an 800 number 1-800-403-XXXX and enter
in a six digit PIN#. Now that you know what kind of conference that you
are going to set up you need to pick your method of setting the
conference up you could use a COCOT Coin Operated Customer Owned
Telephone) or using a beige box. Now lets say your sitting at your beige
box or COCOT first dial your local ANI (AUTOMATIC NUMBER IDENTIFICATION)
or 1-800-MY-ANI-IS. Copy down the number you get. Next dial 1-800-232-
1111 or 1-800-232-1234. Now when the operator comes on tell her what
kind of teleconference you want, 800 dial-in or alliance. Next she will
ask you your name you can give her any name you want. Next you will be
asked your phone number so give her what you wrote down after dialing the
ANI number. Then she will ask you the time and date of the conf. She'll
ask you the duration (How many hours the conf will last). Next she will
ask you how many ports you want (How many spaces you want open for people
to call in on the conf). Now if you want a good conference pick about 10
- 12 ports no more then 12. Now your done. If through any part of the
discussion she said the computers or system was down that means in some
way she came on. If not she will say i will call back in a few minutes
with your access codes (k0d3z). She will call back verify information
then give you the k0d3z!@# Now your job is not over yet if you have a
alliance you must beige box again and dial in your first party and pass
control to them (so you and them don't get billed). If any time on an
800 dial in you want to use the host pin, use it from a pay phone or
beige box it.
censorship -- good or bad?
composed by terminal velocity.. .
- -- ---------------------------]
It's rampant. There seems to be no cure and it spread like wildfire.
It's no disease like something out of a Steve King novel, because it is
something more insidious than any man could contemplate on his own. Quite
simply this disease is called censorship. It starts outbenign, even
beneficial. Simple things like bad language or truly perverse things are
gone and the area is much better. People begin thinking it might not be
so bad because everything targeted is things most people don't want to
around anyway. Then it turns ugly. Some group thrilled by it's prior
success at banning pornography decides they should take the momentum and
go on to bigger things like targeting books which portray all sorts of
nasty things and are corrupting the minds of our youth. So on their great
big To Kill List they add books like Catcher in the Rye and Huck Finn and
Tom Sawyer. Why? It is displayed in each of this books children showing
lack of authority, explicit racist and sexual themes as wells as violence
in some cases and maybe even torture. Then comes music. First they target
extreme musics like Rap and Heavy Metal. Then Hip Hop, Techno, Rock, and
so on. No more expressive music should be allowed as not to offend decent
people. Eventually things like this escalate to a point there it could be
deemed a complete repression of human creativity and spirit. Why allow
people to read at all? That way people only know what you tell them. No
more heretical books to attack this religion or that religion.
There are often several tactics which are used to try and ban
something or get something changed. The first on is often a bonfire
burning of copies of the offensive material. Books and records and movies
piled up high in the middle of town square and all the decent good living
folk slopping on some gasoline and setting it aflame. It could also be
noted of course that this was the same practice the did in Nazi Germany
during WWII when Hitler order people to burn their books(most people did
it willingly). The second and more commonly used tactic is an organized
ban. Getting consumers to boycott the products of companies who produce
things that they find repulsive to them, their cause, their religion, et
al. A very effective tactic that is most often used as well is lobbying
in congress. Getting politicians to represent their cause before Congress
and getting them to add or change laws which, while don't ban certain
things, will make it more difficult for the to exist in a certain area.
All of this of course comes down to one simple question: Is
Censorship Good or Bad? While the answer to that may not be so simple,
because where do arguments of good taste become censorship? Who
ultimately decides what is right for other people? We must strive
diligently to seek the answers to these questions because the world could
be a very bleak place if we don't work this out carefully.
Authors Note: I would suggest you read the books Fahrenheit 451 by Ray
Bradbury and 1894 by George Orwell. Both of these works of literature
show a world in which both censorship and government are out of control.
Keep in mind how real it could become if we aren't careful.
why clinton will win in '96.. .
composed by edicius.. .
In my opinion, I believe that the Democratic Party will succeed in
the 1996 Presidential Election. The team of Bill Clinton and Al Gore
will finish with an unforeseen victory over whomever will run under the
Republican Elephant.
The works and accomplishments of Bill Clinton are constantly being
cut down by the Republican Party and the media. Currently, Bill Clinton
finds himself engaged in the middle of a new Vietnam Struggle. He, along
with many of his aides, is poised to re-establish full diplomatic
relations with Vietnam.
My father served in the Vietnam War, and Vietnam does still have
many unanswered questions about MIA's and POW's, but, I belive, that if
we were to grant Vietnam full diplomatic relations with us, we would be
able to get a full account of our missing soldiers, much easier. Also,
American Business would boom, with the new market. Coca-Cola, one
American Company that does do business in Southeast Asia currently, has
had record sales in that region in the last few years.
In Clinton's term, so far, he has had many other successes. His gun
control bill, tho not perfect, but very good in its own right, has been
having a lot of success. His Youth Job Boot Camp program is helping
young people, who otherwise would have a very dismal future, gain the
experience needed to gain jobs. Basicly, giving them a chance at life,
something they didn't have without the program.
Another pretty recent thing that he has done, is he secured a trade
deal with Japan. Granted, since President Johnson, and the 60's, we have
had quite a few trade pacts with Japan. Compared with the others, I
believe that this new trade deal that Clinton worked out is very stable,
and should prove to be very good in the long run.
Clinton's foreign policy has been above average. He has had history
breaking peace deals with the Israelis and the PLO, he averted a major
war with North Korea, along with a few other remarkable events. He has
brought a control to the Hatian Crisis, and restored a somewhat
democratic rule in their country, and the fact that issues visas to a few
members of the Irish Republican Part (IRA) is why we now have a temporary
Peace Treaty between Ireland and the United Kingdom.
All these works of Clinton add up to make a very good president, who
has tried, and succeeded, in breaking the Republican flow of the previous
twelve years. Whether they pit Bob Dole or Phil Grahm against him, he
will win. I'm not saying that it will be an easy victory, or a
landslide, but he will win by a few, enough, points.
cyberporn.. or cyberfun?
- -- ------------------]
We've all heard a lot about the Exon Bill, numerous articles in Time
and Newsweek, and countless reports on the local news and CNN. They make
the Internet seem like a very big no-no, filled with corruption, child
pornography, and countless illegal activities.
Well, outside of the Ansi Scene, there isn't much corruption (oh
wait, some senators do have email addresses), but there is a lot of
pornography, and illegal activities on-going on the Internet and
countless BBS'.
Personally, I use the 'Net for more then just Ansi. I use many FTP
Sites that include Science Related Material, mainly Weather Stuff. (I'm
more then just a Computer Geek. :>) Of course, something that I, and
just about everyone else, check out, is some porn here and there.
Now, I am not a hard core porn guy. I don't stay on #sexygifs dcc'n
everything. I get a zipped up gif collection here, I uudecode some
binaries there, and I read alt.sex.stories. Not everyday, not every
week. But I do check it out. Its a common thing on the 'Net these days.
I personally don't think that 9 year olds should be getting this
crap, because sometimes it is just that, crap. I think that the
Pedophiles that stalk the kids on America OnLine should be shot. They're
the ones that give the media something to play with, not the people
trading normal .gif's here and there.
Normal .gif's are alright. Heterosexual .gif's are fine. I don't
see anything wrong with homosexual .gif's either, although I'm not gay
myself, so I don't personally get them. (Minus a few lesbian pictures
here and there. :>) The ones that truly cross the lines of decency, are
the beastiality, child pornography, severe b&d/s&m, and necrophiliac
pictures. (Trust me, I have seen necrophiliac gifs.)
What I'm trying to say is, sex is normal. There is nothing wrong
with teenagers and adults viewing this 'pornography' for themselves, and
not being afraid. One thing that I think best sums up this issue, comes
from US News and World Report:
For their year end wrap up issue, they had the new words and terms
used in 1994 with their 'definition'. Here's one:
Cybersex: Highly Explicit Sex over a computer system in which the
parties involved normally do not know the true identity of the
other. (Don't worry parents; The Keyboard that carries Aids or
other Sexually Transmitted Diseases hasn't been invented yet.)
See? Isn't that good? I mean, a teenager can be sexually active,
and still be a virgin? Get it? One can get their 'sexual frustrations'
out, and parents don't have to really worry about their child getting any
viruses. (No pun intended.)
It may not seem a justified reason to a complex and growing problem,
but it is a start. Keep it somewhat clean and decent, and get rid of the
truly lewd and obscene. Then again, that raises another question: What
really is decent?

_First-grader steals car to get to school on time._
The Associated Press
COLEBROOKE, NH -- His bike wasn't up to speed, so a first-grader stole
something with more horsepower to get him to school on time for the last
day of class.
'I was at a stop sign when the guy with me said, `Hey, there's a
little kid driving that car,'' Police Chief Mike Sielicki said Thursday.
He followed the 1989 Ford Escort for two blocks. The 7-year-old boy
slammed on the brakes when he reached a busy intersection. He had put
the car in park when Sielicki walked up.
'He looked at me and said, I was going to be late for school,''
Sielicki said. 'On the way home he asked if he could drive the cruiser.'

_Visa, MasterCard will seek safe Internet card together_
The Associated Press.
NEW YORK -- Visa and MasterCard will announce today they've teamed up to
jointly develop a safe way for consumers to pay for goods on the Internet
using their credit cards, sources said.
The companies, which have been pursuing separate courses, decided to
unite their efforts to create scrambling software that will allow
consumers to make purchases on the global computer network without having
to worry about hackers stealing their credit card numbers, said the
sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Both companies said they will make an announcement today about the
electronic commerce but were not more specific.
Because Visa International, based in San Fransico, and New York-
bases MasterCard have enormous brand recognition among consumers
worldwide, their partnership could have a powerful impact in the on-line
financial services arena.
The two companies, both owned by groups of banks, together have
691.5 million cards worldwide and have each made enormous investments in
developing global networks for handling electronic payments.
The partnership underscores the pressure credit card companies,
banks, and technology firms are under to make a splash in the on-line
world as Microsoft gets ready to roll out its new operating system,
Windows 95, which is slated to have an on-line service bundled in.
Windows goes on sale Aug. 24.
Visa and MasterCard are intensely competitive, but on-line experts
said that teaming up in this case makes sense because it will give them
an edge.
'They're two of the most recognizable brand names in the world, and
they'd have a leg up on any effort they undertake,' said Adam Schoenfeld,
senior analyst at Jupiter Communications, a market research company in
New York.
Visa has a joint venture with Microsoft to develop a software
program to keep credit card payments private by issuing passwords to
customers.
MasterCard has been working with Netscape Communications Corp., a
Mountain View, Calif.-based software company that makes a popular system
for browsing the Internet's World Wide Web and is developing scrambling
software for secure payment transactions.
The announcement today will be the latest in a slew of partnerships
and product offerings to transacting businesses and handling payments on
the Internet.
Europe's largest credit card company, a consortium of banks called
Euorpay, announce last week a joint venture with International Business
Machines Corp. to develop secure smart card payments over the Internet.
In recent weeks, several banks have announced on-line banking services on
The market for on-line bank accounts and payment services is thought
to be huge, and the ability to ensure consumers that their money will be
safe from hackers is vital to so called electronic commerce.

_Law needed for information superhighway to be built_
Last month's passage by the U.S. Senate of a telecommunications
deregulation bill is a step toward legalizing something that is so
talked-about -- almost taken for granted -- that many people don't even
realize that much of it is prohibited.
The bill, if reconciled with a similar measure that the House is
expected to pass, will allow the information highway to be constructed in
the United States.
I expect other countries to take similar steps in the years ahead.
The information highway is the high-capacity communications network
that is expected to link homes and businesses over the next decade. This
network will transform the way we work, play, shop and learn, provided
policy-makers allow it to be built and operated.
Under the laws and regulations of the United States and many other
nations, companies can't compete to connect you to a single network that
delivers information, entertainment, and communications.
In fact, Great Britain is one of the few places where the
information highway isn't against the law: Its cable and telephone
companies already have been deregulated.
In most countries consumers are served by regulated monopolies: A
telephone company delivers voice, fax, and modem connections; a cable
company delivers video and sometimes, audio programming.
The justifications for government-mandated monopolies were conceived
decades ago, long before anyone had ever heard the term information
highway.
But this is 1995, and policy-makers are to be commended for moving
to loosen the regulatory grip. Unless the cable and phone companies are
allowed to compete head-to-head, it is doubtful how quickly the companies
will make the investments necessary to bring the information highway to
the doorsteps of the world's consumers.
Government regulation of the economy is a tricky matter.
Centralized decision-making is a terribly inefficient in contrast to the
free market. No matter how well-intentioned, government control almost
inevitably protects a few favored companies and hurts just about everyone
else -- especially consumers.
A free market ferrets out the best alternative. It delivers the
products and services that consumers support with their purchases and
rewards companies for innovation and service.
When the marketplace decides which companies and approaches win or
lose, many paths are explored simultaneously instead of just the one path
anointed by policy-makers.
Before deregulation of U.S. airlines in 1978, all routes and fares
were dictated by the government. Airlines didn't lose money; the
government saw to that. Competition between carriers was gentlemanly --
and airfare deals for consumers were rare.
After deregulation, dozens of airlines tried myriad approaches to
win customer loyalty. The competition reallocated economic resources,
giving costumers what their ticket purchases suggested they wanted:
frequent service and low-cost fares.
Other countries have taken notice of this massive, successful
experiment in deregulation.
Never is a free market more important than when the level of demand
for a product or service is unknown. It is impossible for government
regulators to effectively allocate resources when no one knows how much
of something consumers want.
But when the marketplace is in control, competitors risk many
different approaches to unlocking the unknown demand. Many fail, but the
public has a collective opportunity to chose the winners -- and get what
it wants. The marketplace devices if certain companies or initiatives
should be shut down and not use up society's resources anymore.
Employees shift from losing companies to winning ones.
This may sound coldly Darwinian, but especially in areas of
technical innovation, natural selection allocates economic resources a
lot more efficiently than any form of central planning.
On-line services, forerunners of the information highway, are a
classic case of unproved demand. Only 16 percent of U.S. households have
personal computers equipped with modems, and fewer than half of those
households subscribe to commercial services.
In Europe, where there are 42 million personal computers, the
leading on-line service, CompuServe, only has about 300,000 subscribers.
Is there a higher potential demand for on-line service? I think so,
if prices come down and the variety of information goes up.

<edi> ready to be interviewed?
<spiff> sure..
<spiff> let's go bro.
<edi> ok, first off. the basics. name, age, groups, hobbies, prison
record, et al.
<spiff> okay.. easy, umm, t0m, i mean larry.... 18, i'm supposedly still
in iCE.. and spamfx, cafbl, ahh... i dig music/rowing/movies....
i've never been arrested... but... i'm 18, so, gotta look out.
<spiff> oh yeah, i'm a kk0der!@
<edi> heh. you're a pretty good coder. how long have you been at it?
how'd you start? and, what languages?
<spiff> (not as good as you though, but people still phear me) :>
<spiff> umm, i've been at it a little less than 2 years...
<spiff> paskal
<spiff> i was taking a course in school for pascal... we covered like a
writlen... so, when i got home that day, i made a skillion line
writeln in pascal..
<spiff> with just me talking... it rocked....
<spiff> ahh.. i tried C++ once, but... i didn't like it... so just paskal
<edi> hm, pretty coo. what was your first group or project you seriously
coded for, cafbl/abuser?
<spiff> okay... well, yeah, my first deal was for the abuser... i was on
a board that was called 'the slaughterhouse' it was run by a guy
who now is dash.... anyway, he was talking to me about a group he
was starting.. and i was never in a group before..
<spiff> i always looked up to acid and ice... so, i jumped at any chance
i could get
<spiff> i thought.. hey wait..i'm learning pascal in school.. maybe i can
program for them or something...
<spiff> i sent something to dark phiber that i made up really quick (it
sucked, hardcore) but, he like it... so bam... i programmed issue
one
<edi> not a bad deal, not at all. :> hehe.
<edi> abuser is a very good coded magizine. how do you get your ideas
for it?
<spiff> all different things... i mean.. i try to get as many exe's as i
can to take a look at... the more influences, the better i
think... umm, lots of time, i'll just be messing around with some
code.. and it looks good.. so, i go for it... but, lots of
<spiff> my stuff are ideas i got from looking at other people's
programs... and then
<spiff> modifying it.. or twisting it oin a new direction....
<edi> so you rip other magizines? gosh. you must have ripped everything
from jonas. :> muhah.
<edi> hmm. since cafbl is hack/phreak orientated, i must ask. do you
phreak or hack yourself?
<spiff> nah...
<spiff> i'm the only guy who has no idea what the fuck they're doing when
it comes to h/p..
<spiff> and, i think a lot of the members dislike me for that....
<spiff> and, in response to that ripping thing..
<edi> heh. you just code it. :> they should be happy, its a very good
code at that.
<spiff> it's no that :>
<edi> heh.
<edi> you write alot too, right? what 'zines have your work appeared in?
<spiff> it's just... ya know.. i'll be looking at something and think,
fuck, that's decent, if only he woulda done this, then.. i'll
load up TP and DO that...
<spiff> edi- i've written for hoe, infinity... and maybe jonas :>
<edi> definally jonas, very soon. :>
<spiff> i'd like to write more...
<spiff> in the future...
<edi> do you have any inspiration for your writing?
<spiff> sometimes, it's easier to express my ideas through code than
words...
<spiff> edi- not that i can think of.. damn.. this interview sucks so far
:>
<edi> spiff; gee, thanks for your vote of confidence. :>
<edi> does anyone have any special nicknames for you?
<spiff> hey, one thing about the kkoding though.. i just realize, as sad
as it is, i get a lot of my ideas from tv...
<spiff> edi- waht do you mean?
<spiff> in real life?
<spiff> or the scene?
<edi> spiff. i donno. do you go by anything other then spiff? do
people in real life call you spiff? any cool nicks in real life?
<spiff> or both?
<spiff> yeah, actually... umm... no one's gonna believe this, but, some
people actually call me 'big lar'.... or 'da big lar', then, my
personal favorite 'das un big lar'
<edi> das un bir lar. hm, german? :>
<spiff> well.. i'm not german... i don't know damnit!@ :>
<spiff> it just happened...
<spiff> :>
<spiff> i have wierd friends...
<edi> hehe. hmm. what type of music do you listen to? i know you
listen to _alot_. :> what kind?
<edi> very weird friends. :>
<spiff> i like slacker type stuff mostly.. Pavement, dinosaurjr, sonic
youth, nirvana (yes!@), primus, jane's addiction, frank black,
hum, pixies,
<spiff> rem...
<spiff> incidently, you should really check out hum's 'you'd prefer an
astronaut' it's incredible...
<spiff> mike watt.....
<edi> odd. it seems all the poeple from philadelphia like the same type
of music. :> any reason?
<spiff> stuff like that.. i could go on forever, you're right.. i like
too much..
<spiff> edi- yeah, we are the only people that have good taste :> are you
refering to bf? most of the people i know from philly like rap...
but.. i prefer music.... :>
<spiff> edi- it's the evil schukill water!@(!@(
<edi> heh. it just seems that the people local to gba, like the same
things. frank black, pixies, et al. shrug.
<spiff> edi- the pixies/frank black is bf's fault :> it's decent stuff
though.. mellow..
<edi> all the girls in the scene are dying to know this, do you have any
real life love interests?
<spiff> all 5 of the girls are really dying to know this? :>
<edi> no!@ 4. its 4 girls. all 4 of them are dying to know. and me.
:>
<edi> so thats 5. :>
<spiff> nah... not really... i'm just another lonely computer g33k i
guess.... nothing serious.... but for you, t0m, i'd make an
exception...
<edi> oh baby. fun times ahead.
<spiff> w3rd.
<edi> what do you think about pez dying out, and bf taking down gba and
leaving for awhile?
<spiff> she thinks she missed the train to mars, she's outback counting
stars....
<spiff> edi- i think it sucks... :> but.. that's being selfish i guess..
gba was an incredible board... they had all da w4r3z... and even
t-files... i'm definetly gonna miss him.... but.. if that's what
he wants... he should go for it.
<edi> nod. i agree. i like to see cybergeeks get a life, once in a
while. :>
<spiff> p3z was some good times and dope rhymes... no doubt about it...
<spiff> did you hear the hoe thing too?
<edi> when you're gonna stay up all night to do some mondo coding, any
special foods or snacks you like to munch on?
<edi> hoe? james hetfield taking over? that thing?
<spiff> yeah... i can't believe moggy-mog is giving it up.. i thought he

<edi> he'll still take over the world. because he's mogel. thats all.
he's mogel, and the world is his.
<spiff> umm, i like iced-tea and tacos... definetly my f00d of choice...
