Egypt and the treasure of Lindos
Egypt outside its borders ...
Lindos is the oldest settlement on the island of Rhodes. Great maritime power, along with two other centers of the island (Kamiros and Yalisos) founded the city of Rhodes. It also seems that the Lindiotis must have several settlements in Magna Graecia, including the one destroyed by an earthquake and then rebuilt as Nea Polis, today's Naples. Of Lindos are the philosopher Cleobulus (one of the seven wise men), Carete (builder of the Colossus), etc.
In Lindos Elena di Troia was also exiled, who committed suicide here, rushing from the rocks .. On the cliff overlooking the sea, around which the town develops (considered a national monument in its entirety), stands a splendid Doric temple dedicated to Athena. Originally, however, there was worshiped a deity, more similar to the plentiful statue of the temple of Ephesus, a sort of Cybele, to whom all the peoples of the eastern Mediterranean sent splendid gifts and offerings. Among these, also the Pharaohs of Egypt.
The treasure of the temple was therefore very rich and Nero wanted to take it to Rome. Three ships were loaded that left, overflowing with gold and precious objects, from the port of Lindos to reach Rhodes. But they never reached it, sinking on the journey of about sixty kilometers between the two ports. In Rhodes, in fact, a mistral wind periodically blows, called "meltemi" which normally lasts for three days and can reach an intensity of 80/100 Km/h.
On the side of the island where Lindos rises, it blows from the coast towards the open sea and, still today, sometimes the case of small boats disappearing in the open sea occurs. Moreover, there, the sea is very deep and, up to Cyprus, no land meets. Off the coast of Lindos there is a pit that reaches 1500 m. Then, quite often, there are also earthquakes. The ships of Nero with the treasure of Lindos and with the offers of the Pharaohs are therefore still there, somewhere, perhaps pushed off by the "meltemi", waiting to be found again! As for the temple, what the English had survived to the centuries and restored by the Italians (statuary and other), the British thought of before returning the territory to Greece, taking it away. Much more efficient than Nero!
