THE PUZZLE GALLERY: AT THE CARNIVAL: Part 1
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Hazard Park, the blackly humorous carnival world created by Cliff Johnson. This is no sweet, nostalgic romp through Cliff's youthful years, but a sinister look at how he viewed the darker side of amusement parks. (This walkthru is based on the PC version of the game. Other versions may vary slightly.)
If you played Cliff's other game, THE FOOL'S ERRAND, you're already familiar with the types of puzzles you can expect to encounter -- word searches, picture puzzles, cryptograms, mazes, etc. But don't expect the depth and storyline that made FOOL'S a joy to play.
I've divided the walkthru into four parts to cover the puzzles under each of the letters in PARK. Some puzzles have the same answers from game to game; however, some of the puzzles' solutions change (the answers remain the same, though). If a puzzle has a solution that changes, I'll give you the answer to the puzzle; it will be up to you to come up with the proper solution.
If you can do so, use a mouse to play the game -- it will make things much easier; otherwise, your keyboard (or joystick) will work fine. And now, step right this way to the grimmest show on Earth!
"P" PUZZLES
AT THE CARNIVAL
The opening puzzle is a jumbled picture that you must rearrange. The words "At The" are at the top center of the screen; "CARNIVAL" is centered directly under them. Place the rides in the following order, from left to right: Ferris Wheel, Merry-Go-Round, ticket booth/concession stand, and Octopus. The Roller Coaster's framework is in the background and stretches from one side of the screen to the other. The yellow fireworks burst is on the top left; the red is on the top right. At the bottom of the screen is Cliff's story about the years he spent working for five amusement parks. When the pieces are arranged correctly, your screen will flash, and a plus sign (+) will be placed next to the puzzle's title.
PARKING LOT
This is a two-part puzzle involving a word search and a cryptogram. First, find the 25 cars being stolen in the parking lot. The cars (reading across) are: Chevy, Cadillac, Honda, Mustang, Lincoln, Volvo, Nissan, Pontiac, Peugeot, Dodge, Porsche, Mercury, and Mitsubishi. The cars (reading down) are: Toyota, Ford, Mercedes, Suzuki, Jaguar, Plymouth, Oldsmobile, and Subaru. On the upward diagonal, find Chrysler and Volkswagen; on the downward diagonal, find Buick and Thunderbird.
Next, solve the cryptogram. The first six words are "Even though the parking is free...." You should be able to solve the rest of the cryptogram with this information. One of the words in the completed puzzle will be highlighted. Write this word down on a piece of paper and label it "Parking Lot" for use with "The Future" puzzle.
MAIN ENTRANCE
You need to move the jigsaw blocks into the box -- fitting the pieces together as you go -- to form a question. The question is "What two attractions can be found at the main entrance?" (Note that the question mark is not on the puzzle pieces!) After you've arranged the blocks correctly, you'll be given another set of blocks to fit together, this time forming the answer ("Metal detectors and trained police dogs"). I told you Hazard Park was a sinister place! Finally, you'll be presented with another jumbled picture. It says: Welcome to Hazard Park. The sign goes in the top center of the screen. The easiest way to complete this puzzle is to get the "Welcome to" part placed; place the pink border pieces next; rearrange the bottom borders to spell out "Hazard Park."
TICKET BOOTH
Rearrange the strips to form the correct picture. Place the purple-on-black silhouettes first for the easiest solution. The Ferris Wheel is at the far left; next to it is the Merry-Go-Round's top, the Dutch Shoes, and the Roller Coaster on the far right; the Ticket Booth is all the way to the right. When the picture's completed, you'll get two "press the buttons in the proper sequence to uncover the phrase" puzzles. Their solutions change from game to game, so I'll give you the phrases you're trying to form. The first phrase is, "What is the price of admission to Hazard Park?" The second is, "Your continued good health!" If you're having problems, be sure to get some help from the menu bar (click on the puzzle's name on the right).
THE FUN WAY
This was the only puzzle that frustrated me because it had no logical solution (except when you're "bounced" where you need to be). The object is to bump into the groups of people until you're able to go right toward the "Rides" sign. When you're bounced to the right of the top center group, make your way over to the group slightly below and to their right. Bump into them to get bounced to the upper right. Then, it becomes simply a matter of perseverance until you get bounced to the lower right groups. Eventually, you'll be bounced up to where the Rides sign is.
Once you're "out," solve the press-the-button puzzles (there are two of them). It's a two-part sentence: The first part is "Mingling with the customers"; the second part reads "is often more scary than the rides."
MERRY-GO-ROUND
Unscramble the picture of the Merry-Go-Round as follows: Blue horse/green shirt go on the far left; blue horse/red skirt go on the far right; red horse/blue jumpsuit go in the center; white horse/red shirt, left of center; and white horse/brown hat, right of center.
After solving the picture, you'll have yet another of the press-the-button puzzles (the game's loaded with them!). This one says: "What is the true thrill of riding on an antique wooden horse?" And, finally, comes another cryptogram. The first line is "Realizing that you have...." The rest of the puzzle is easily solved from this information.
SITTING DUCKS
I enjoyed this one. First, put the picture together as follows: The white boards are at the bottom, the gray side strip is on the right; the ducks on the bottom face left, next row up face right, next up face left, and the top row face right.
Next comes a whole wad of five-letter anagrams. The random jumbling of the letters sometimes causes the words to be displayed correctly; you won't have to solve those. The word list is: alive, brook, creek, decoy, every, field, growl, humor, irony, juicy, knoll, lucky, marsh, noise, onion, pluck, quack, roast, swamp, squat, sorry, skunk, spice, syrup, storm, twice, uncle, vivid, wharf, Xerox, yeast, and zebra. Note that for each word you unscramble, you knock one of the ducks off the boards. Unfortunately, your aim's off (now, how did that happen?) because one lone duck is left. Get your piece of paper, write down "Sitting Ducks," and the word the duck says.
BUMPER CARS
Here's another fun puzzle. This is a series of five crossword puzzles whose central letters spell out eight-letter words. Each crossword has a "letter theme" (i.e., each word in that crossword will start with the same letter), and each word's definition is displayed at the top of the screen.
The first puzzle's words start with the letter "A." The words are: avoid, attic, acorn, again, adult, above, annoy, altar.
The second puzzle's words start with the letter "E." The words are: earth, essay, exact, edict, equal, enjoy, enemy, eager.
The third puzzle's words start with the letter "I." The words are: image, igloo, inner, icing, idiot, irate, ivory, icicle.
The fourth puzzle's words start with the letter "O." The words are: ounce, oblong, other, ocean, orbit, often, oyster.
The fifth puzzle's words start with the letter "U." The words are: unwrap, upchuck, untie, upset, until, urban, usual, usher. Write down "Bumper Cars" and the eight-letter word from this crossword.
ICE CREAM STAND
This is a word-search puzzle that has a cryptogram and a two-word anagram to be solved after you've found all the hidden ice cream flavors (there are 20 flavors). Reading across: Black Walnut, Butterscotch, Coconut, Cherry, Rocky Road, Vanilla, Caramel, Blueberry, Marshmallow, Raspberry, Strawberry, Banana, Chocolate, and Boysenberry. Reading down: Cockroach Crunch (!), Butter Pecan, and Mocha. There are two upward-reading diagonal flavors, Coffee and Grape, and one downward-reading diagonal: Fudge.
The first line of the cryptogram reads: "And be sure to taste...." The anagram is "Rodent Ripple." (Ugh!)
FERRIS WHEEL
This puzzle is nothing but press-the-button puzzles. There are five of them: The first four form a sentence; the last one forms a full sentence. The answers are: "In over twenty years," "there hasn't been," "a single injury," "on this ride," and, finally, "Falling off the ride, well, that's another matter!"
THE PUZZLE GALLERY: AT THE CARNIVAL: Part 2
"A" PUZZLES
SKYWAY
Press the buttons on these three puzzles to find the phrases: "From the Skyway," "you can really," and "see all of the...." Then, press the buttons to uncover the word "trash." The easiest way to do this is to first press all the buttons, turning them "off." Then, one at a time, turn them back on until the word takes shape. Note: Only six of the buttons will be lit when the word appears. The solution to this puzzle changes from game to game.
WORLD'S BIGGEST
Hold your tummy, groan, and rearrange the strips into a picture of the world's biggest hotdog! Afterward, skip through the condiments buffet and put the following on your 'dog: Sauerkraut, Mustard, Ketchup, Onions, Relish, and Cheese. Be sure to save enough money for cab fare..."and a trip to the hospital." Write down "World's Biggest" and the highlighted four-letter word.
LADIES' ROOM
This is a combination word-search/cryptogram puzzle. First, find the names of all the ladies waiting in line for the next available stall. There are 29 milling around (this could take until closing time). Reading across: Jane, Elizabeth, Katherine, Shirley, Lesley, Felicia, Teresa, Veronica, and Elvira. Reading down: Gloria, Nanette, Jessica, Darlene, Zelda, Cynthia, Phyllis, Olivia, Rachel, Isabel, Elaine, Melanie, Roxanne, and Yvonne. Reading upward on the diagonal: Barbara, Wendy, and Heather. Reading downward on the diagonal: Ursula, Rebecca, and Audrey. The first six words in the cryptogram are: "Without a doubt, the ladies' room...."
OCTOPUS
Unjumble the picture puzzle, then solve the press-the-button puzzle. The objects in the picture should be placed as follows: "The Whirling Octopus" sign and the people in line for the ride are on the far right side of the screen; the green fireworks burst is in the upper right corner; the red fireworks are to the left of the sign; and the sentence at the bottom of the picture reads: "What prevents the customers from falling off this ride?" The button puzzle reveals the answer: "Absolutely nothing!"
SKIN THE CAT
The object of the word-cube puzzles is to make six three-letter words. The answers for the six puzzles are: 1. COD, ANY, TEE; 2. CAT, ORE, PEA; 3. CAD, AGE, TOW; 4. CRY, AYE, TEN; 5. CAT, OWE, WEE; and 6. COD, ARE, TEN. Write down "Skin the Cat," and the six-letter word that's capitalized in the ending paragraph.
LOG RIDE
This is another picture puzzle that takes a bit of tinkering to get right. The words on the picture are in the upper left corner; the dark blue people are on the top log; the medium blue people are on the center log; the light greenish blue people are on the bottom log. That's all there is to this puzzle except for the punch line.
SOUVENIR SHOPPE
You'll be screaming over this one! In my opinion, it's the toughest of the picture puzzles. If you thought the cyan writing on the gray background was bad, wait until you try to unscramble brown and yellow teddy bears on a pink and blue background! Get a prescription for Valium from your doctor before tackling this one. The only thing I can tell you about placement is the title: It goes on the bottom. Thankfully, it's the only puzzle in the Souvenir Shoppe.
RABID RAT
The Rabid Rat is a picture puzzle (not as bad as the teddy bears, I promise) of a roller coaster (Mad Mouse?), and a press-the-button puzzle after the picture's solved. Place the rats flanking the blue entrance on the far left; follow the framework of the coaster to finish the puzzle. (Helpful hint: There's a deep valley in the framework just to the left of the far right side of the roller coaster.) After it's completed, you'll be asked, "Why does the line move so quickly?" Press the buttons to find the answer: "Because they pack 'em in and send 'em off a fast as they can!"
MEN'S ROOM
Sit back and relax your eyes...well, maybe not. This is a word-search puzzle with a cryptogram afterward. For some reason, the Men's Room isn't as crowded as the Ladies' Room, and the men all seem to be going elsewhere (to the Ladies' Room, perhaps?). There are 28 names. Reading across: Lawrence, Clarence, Herman, Dominic, Oliver, Vincent, Gilbert, Reginald, Frankie, Andrew, Gaylord, Quentin, and Kenneth. Reading down: Jerome, William, Eddie, Dennis, Patrick, Irving, Benjamin, Barney, Alfonso, Albert, and Lloyd. Diagonally upward is Montgomery. Diagonally downward: Theodore, Nicholas, and Arthur. The first six words in the cryptogram are: "He will soon discover that some...." Write down "Men's Room" and the highlighted word.
ROTO-VOMIT
Listen, it's not as bad as a couple that are coming up later. Put the picture bac together, then solve the press-the-button puzzle to explain the nature of the ride. Place the "Roto-Vomit" sign on the far right; the sidewalk at the bottom; the people on the slab on the far left mid-screen; and the ride itself in the upper center. The next puzzle's in three parts. The first part is "The centrifugal force keeps the," the second part is "customers pinned to the inside wall," and the third part is "even when the floor lowers down."
THE PUZZLE GALLERY: AT THE CARNIVAL: Part 3
"R" PUZZLES
ALL ABOARD
After the Roto-Vomit, a nice, relaxing ride on the carnival's train should sooth your stomach. Press the buttons to form the question: "What's the first thing you see on the train ride?" Then, move the jigsaw pieces into the block to form the answer: "The toxic waste dump."
COIN TOSS
Here it is: the other "form the word by pressing the buttons" puzzle. Use the same strategy as you did with "Skyway" to find the hidden words. There are three separate puzzles that will form three four-letter words. The words are OOPS, DARN, and HECK. Again, each word needs to have only six of the buttons "lit" in the main word.
RIVER RIDE
Here's what you needed instead of the train: a ride on a safari river boat to look at Hazard Park's 26 wild animals. Reading across: Ostrich, Cheetah, Gorilla, Rhinoceros, Chimpanzee, Panther, Buffalo, Python, Baboon, Kangaroo, Antelope, Orangutan, Coyote, Jackal, and Lion. Reading down: Tiger, Barracuda, Giraffe, Alligator, Tarantula, Leopard, Hyena, and Crocodile. Diagonally up: Shark and Elephant; diagonally down is the Hippopotamus. After the ride's over, solve the cryptogram and learn the true nature of the animals you saw. The first five words are: "When the fake mechanical animals...." Write down "River Ride" and the highlighted word.
HALL OF MIRRORS
Nice optical illusion, isn't it? Put the light-colored MIRRORS in the center, then place the remaining pieces where they logically fit. The maze you find yourself in after you've solved the picture isn't as intimidating as it looks. Simple move south and keep trying to go through the right-hand wall. About four or five moves south, you'll find a path. Go through and head north. As you reach the exit, write down "Hall of Mirrors" and the capitalized word you see.
GREASE BURGER
Yes, you're hungry again, so go build yourself a Grease Burger! You'd need Dagwood Bumstead's mouth to take a bite out of the sandwich you're about to create. In order to fix the sandwich, you'll need to solve (are you ready?) 27 word cubes! In order, the solutions are: 1. EAT, BRA, BEG; 2. EAT, EGO, LET; 3. HEN, ORE, EAT; 4. EBB, YOU, EAT; 5. FEW, ORE, EAT; 6. ERA, EAT, LYE; 7. BAR, ONE, ADD; 8. BAG, ONE, GYM; 9. BOA, INN, BED; 10. ACE, GAY, ONE; 11. BAR, ONE, ODD; 12. COW, AWE, RED; 13. COO, OWL, WED; 14. ACT, COW, EGO; 15. COW, OWE, ONE; 16. COW, ARE, MET; 17. BUN, ORE, ANT; 18. EGO, BUN, BUY; 19. EYE, BOO, BUN; 20. DRY, EYE, NET; 21. HAM, ICE, PEN; 22. BUG, ORE, ANT; 23. ICE, LUG, LEG; 24. GAG, EGO, MET; 25. FLY, EYE, WET; 26. COB, ARE, NET; and 27. OAF, FIR, FLY (whew!). Eat hearty and pass the Pepto-Bismol!
CYCLONE
This isn't as bad as it looks. The words (Few can survive the CYCLONE!) go on the bottom and start at the far left. The Cyclone is an elongated funnel, with the darkest spot going on the upper left side of the contraption. Follow the "wind" lines to place them. The trickiest part is making sure the metal band around the Cyclone's edge is smooth.
HAUNTED HOUSE
This picture's a little tough to get the hang of, but with things in their proper places, everything else will fall right. The chimney belongs in the upper right; the words are in the upper left; the long porch is on the lower left and is topped by the roof shaped like a steeple; the front door is just right of the lower center; above it is the balcony; and the barred window is to the right of the front door. Spooky, eh?
TOURIST TRADE
Time to unwind with another word search. This time you're looking for states (there are 28). Reading across: Washington, Texas, Illinois, Kentucky, Kansas, Montana, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Colorado, Nevada, Michigan, Wyoming, Idaho, Maine, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arizona, Virginia, and Vermont. Reading down: Alabama, Delaware, Oregon, Indiana, and Mississippi. Diagonally downward is California, and diagonally upward is Connecticut.
ALPINE UPCHUCK
This one's relatively simple. The title goes across the top of the screen; the words run across the bottom; the blue and purple striped ride's base is above the words and centered. The rest of the ride should be easy to assemble.
COMET
There are twelve words in the sentence you're going to create. Each word must be formed by moving the jigsaw pieces with the letters onto varying shapes of geometric blocks. The first six words read normally (straight across); the seventh word reads downward on the diagonal, as do words nine and ten; the eighth word reads normally; the eleventh word runs down; the last word is upward on the diagonal. The entire sentence is: "What new ride is going between the Comet and the Ferris Wheel?"
THE PUZZLE GALLERY: AT THE CARNIVAL: Part 4
"K" PUZZLES
LAFF IN THE DARK
First, unscramble the picture as follows: "Laff in the Dark" is in the middle of the screen; the word GHOSTS is spelled out across the top of the picture; the milling crowds are at the very bottom; the cars and entrance/exit doors are under the row of skulls. After you've solved the picture, you'll be taken for a ride through the maze...well, maybe not, then again....
Maneuver your "car" through the dark. You'll never see a wall, but you'll run into many obstacles. When you do, see if you can go in a different direction. If you can't, retrace your moves one at a time, and test to see if you find an unseen passage. You'll know you're making progress when you start getting messages. They won't repeat, by the way, so if you get lost, you'll not know you've found your way back until you get another message. In this manner, make your way to the exit and pray you never have to come in here again!
After the ride's over, you'll be "treated" to one of Cliff's anecdotes. In the story is a capitalized word; write down "Laff in the Dark" and this word.
THE HAMMER
Put the picture together and you'll be treated to a gruesome concept of how some of these rides go so darned fast. The words run along the bottom of the screen; "Hammer" is in the upper left corner, the "screw" assembly runs down the right side of the screen; the throng of victims is under the "Hammer" sign; the red car and ride operator are on the right near the middle.
LOST AND FOUND
This one has four press-the-button puzzles. It starts off pretty tame; however, by the time you reach puzzle number 4, you'll be tearing your hair. The signs (in order) are pointing the way to: The Souvenir Shoppe; Haunted House and Merry-Go-Round; Tilt-A-Retch, Colossal Coronary, and Alpine Upchuck; Loop-O-Puke, Lobotomizer, Chiropractor, and Lost and Found.
Now that you know your way around Hazard Park, you're going to stroll over to the Lost and Found Stand to see what people have been losing by solving a word-search puzzle. You're going to find 26 pretty strange things! Reading across: Jacket, Suitcase, Earphones, Briefcase, Lipstick, Styling Comb, Wallet, Sunglasses, Laptop Computer, Keychain, Little Sister, Wooden Leg, Basketball, and Tennis Racket. Reading down: Zipgun, Scarf, Hiking Boots, Purse, Sweater, Hair Spray, Switchblade, Sneakers, Overcoat, and Knapsack. On the downward diagonal is a Notebook.
SHIRT AND SPLATTER
Rearrange the pieces of the picture to form the words "Buy an overpriced T-shirt and ruin it with paint!!!" Place these at the bottom half of the screen. The green letters spell out SHIRT 'N' (top line) and SPLATTER (bottom line). Center them on the top half of the screen. Add the finishing touches (click your mouse repeatedly) and pay for your masterpiece, Picasso!
FUNHOUSE
There are four picture puzzles in the Funhouse. The first is the main entrance -- a gigantic clown's head. His blue nose is dead center; red tongue directly under his nose; the "left-hand" toes face right and the "right-hand" toes face left. Juggle the rest of the pieces around until the picture's complete.
The next picture warns of trapdoors. The warning goes at the bottom of the screen; the red arrow is on the right wall; the dark "exit" is in the upper left corner; the trapdoor is just above the words; the three falling people are just above the trap door.
"Falling Objects" may make you crazy if you look at it long enough! The words "Beware of falling objects!" are centered on the bottom of the screen; the couple is just right of center above "...ing obj..."; the red door is just north of dead center; the horizontal stripes are on the ceiling; the vertical stripes are on the walls; the large black diamond pattern is on the left wall; the ceiling slab is directly over the couple.
Finally, you have to be on the lookout for electrical shocks. The words start in the upper left corner; the ball with the electricity on its right goes on the left just south of center, and the other is on the right; the red diamond shape is just below "...tric sho..."
COLOSSAL CORONARY
They don't call this one "Colossal Coronary" for nothing; after you solve this one, you'll see why! There are four word cubes to solve, then two press-the-button puzzles. The word cubes are as follows: 1. BIG, ACE, GYM; 2. BIG, ONE, ANT; 3. BIG, EVE, GYM; and 4. BIG, ACE, YET. Note the rarefied air?
The two phrases in the press-the-button puzzles form one sentence. They are: "This ride cost so much to build that..." and "...they couldn't afford to finish it!"
ROACH RACE
Yes, it's off to the races time! Solve the seven jigsaw puzzles by fitting the pieces into the block. Each word you'll form starts with the letter "R." The words are: roam, rank, rude, reek, romp, ruse, and rook. With each completed word, the roaches move along the racetrack until, finally, one of them wins.
Solve the four press-the-button puzzles to learn the futility of betting on jockey-less roaches. The phrases are: 1. "How would you have known that bug 5 would win?"; 2. "Because no one bet on it."; 3. "What if all six were bet?"; and 4. "Then the whole box of bugs would accidentally spill into the crowd."
LOOP-O-PUKE
See? I told you they'd get worse later on! What an image this ride's name conjures. Solve the jumbled picture as follows: The crowd is on the lower left of the screen; the sign is on the lower right; the ride's crisscrossing base is in the center; the "tinker-toy/ferris wheel" cars are circling about the whole rig.
Now, unscramble the anagrams to see how Hazard Park's patrons feel about this ride: Offensive, Repulsive, Revolting, Disgusting, and Nauseating. That about says it all except for the graphic depiction coming up (pardon the pun).
FIRST AID
It seems all the people who visited the Park today have managed to hurt themselves in one way or another, and they've all wound up at the First Aid Station. There are three (yes, three) word-search puzzles to solve. After solving the first screen, the second appears, then the third. Be prepared to locate some pretty odd injuries!
There are 21 injuries on the first screen. Reading across: Pulled Groin, Kidney Stone, Whisker Burn, Dislocated Shoulder, Gum Disease, Ingrown Toenail, Nosebleed, Stubbed Toe, Splinter, Hangnail, Bee Sting, Earache, and Spinal Injury. Reading down: Concussion, Rat Bite, Skin Rash, Double Chin, Knife Wound, Toothache, and Third-Degree Burn. Vitamin Deficiency is on a downward diagonal.
There are 21 injuries on the second screen. Reading across: Bad Breath, Food Poisoning, Athlete's Foot, Diaper Rash, Dandruff, Ulcers, Heartburn, Chest Pains, Bunions, and Water on the Knee. Reading down: Jock Itch, Amnesia, Earwax, Tan Lines, Body Odor, Liver Spots, Fallen Arches, Black Lung, Blood-shot Eyes, Hemorrhoids, and Constipation. There are no diagonal words.
The final screen contains 20 injuries. Reading across: Whooping Cough, Impotence, Blindness, Paranoia, Jetlag, Spontaneous Combustion, Rigor Mortis, Scarlet Fever, Asthma, and Hysteria. Reading down: Chapped Lips, Whiplash, Tonsillitis, Insanity, Leprosy, Mumps, Chicken Pox, Laryngitis, Hairy Palms, and Measles.
(I don't know about you, but I don't think I want to visit Hazard Park!)
THE FUTURE
Finally, this light-hearted romp through Hazard Park draws to a close. What does the future hold for this strange amusement park? To find out, place the words you've been writing down into their appropriate blanks to learn the answer. If you've not been writing the words down, you can go back to the indicated amusements and find the word. There's only one you'd have to replay, and that's "Skin the Cat." For some reason, this one's word disappears. If it happens to you, save your game, start a new game, and play through just this one puzzle. When you get the word, load your saved game, and insert the word into its slot.
Now, sit back and watch the future unfold: It's pretty bleak!
