Exams are over, so here's the belgian scene report, your regular source for
Belgian scene news. I need some more help, send my anything: reviews,
previews, news, ads, messages, short storries, long storries, boring
storries, etc ...
I will probably be at X'97 (99% sure) so catch me there. I'm planning to
release the next bsr at the X'97-party, so expect issue 10 around 6 april.

Hi there!
After another boring night of studying my butts of for those darn university
exams, I leeched the last Belgium Scene Report and though it wouldn't hurt
if I would throw some words in too.
I mostly read with attention the article by Cray (btw. did you knew Cray and
myself went to the same secondary school =)). Cray exposed a quite important
topic in his article : where the hell is the belgium DEMOscene? We got quite
a huge belgium "scene" (number-wise), and by looking at the belgium groups
list in this newsletter we got quite a huge amount of belgian groups and
belgium even old his own party, but still it seems most of the belgium scene
"members" are just doing nothing or are releasing the same ppe/UnDeRgRoUnD
TuNe/ansi over and over. I know belgium isn't a big country and we obviously
can't pretend to have a scene such as the french or finnish scene but still
there is potential to make of the belgian scene something better that what
it is right now.
Lets take a look at the french scene for example, about three years ago
there was obsolutely no french demoscene or only a very small one. The first
real french production appeared a little bit before TP3 (while we at that
time already had a quite big belgium "scene") and if you take a look at the
french scene right now one can say it growed and IMPROVED quite a lot. Now
why did the french scene improved so much while we could dare to say that
the belgium scene didn't improved at all since 1993 (exept for some Wired'94
release then). The answer is that the french sceners are trying to help
eachother, they have their own irc channel (#demofr) where they can talk
about their projects, they have their own conference on some bbs, they do
TALK to eachother.. In belgium it seems nobody cares about the other groups.
It's only about who will be the next belgian "heroes".. who will release the
groundbreaking production that will blow everything. One *can't* make a
groundbreaking production out of nothing and it's sometimes better to make
something smaller at first and then when it's done to work on something else
that can then be a little bigger. Better be productive instead of trying to
work on some big project that will obviously never be released because of
lack of motivation and experience. It seems there is a lot of very small
groups in jolly belgium.. Some smaller groups should merge togehter (or make
co-op), there surely are some talents out there, their must be some coders,
musicians and graphic artists who could do great things but which simply
don't because they maybe don't have all the needed potential in their own
little group. People should meet together and exchange experience instead of
staying in their own little place. The Belgium Scene Report is a nice try
to make the belgian scene fits better together and the Wired party is a nice
opportunity to show off your productions at a party. But now it's your turn,
belgian demosceners to wake up and try to make something.

I'm bored to hear always the same ...
Do you sometime check the nfo files that comes with releases after a
party ?
I'm suprised to see how many nfo files tell us (especially in bad prods)
stuff like "sorry demo made in a hurry 24 hours before deadline" etc...
I have the feeling they are using this poor trick to apologize for their
"lame" release...We all know month in advance when parties are going to
be held so we have usually plenty of time to work on it and not only the
24 last hours before deadline !
Now,I don't say none of these demos have really been "coded" (should I
say assembled,linked) in 24 hours,but then assume the fact,assume what
you release,and don't write it's been done in 24 hours !! What do you
want to prove us by writing that ??
Another thing that let me laugh (we should give it an award cause it
is at the _top_ of originality) is those groups that have HD troubles.
It's incredible how many HD crash there are before or at parties !!
The common sentence is "couldn't release as we got a HD crash and all
data's are lost" but these days I see some of them are making effort
in originality with stuff like "Sorry for the really slow 3D engine
but we got a HD crash and we had to code it again in a hurry at the party".
Once again,I don't say this might not happen but I guess you,sceners,
aren't that fool to come at a party with the sources,gfx and music only
on your HD and that you don't make some backup on disks in case of ... ??
If you didn't and you have troubles,must code things back,well assume
the facts and don't write all those _shits_ to apologize.

"Itsary" by Itsary review :
After soooooo many years of this static belgian scene,it's with curiosity
that I discovered this new group.I didn't attend the competition at Wired,
so I only knew they got the 10th place...Well,what did I think of it ?
To be honest,at the beginning I thought "it's gonna be a cool demo"
but when I saw that the fire/blur effect is the only thing in the demo,
I got a bit disappointed.
Nevertheless,we can see there's some design in the way the fire/blur
effect is used to make the stuff disappear and that's a good point for a
belgian production.For the other parts,there isn't much to say as it's
quite the same thing but like I said in my previous article (cfr BSR #8),I
prefer to see simple belgian releases than nothing so we shouldn't blame
them, on the contrary.I hope to see new prods soon at least something
before Wired 97 !
The music is good at the beginning and great at the end ! It surely
increase the average quality of the rest.And a last word about the
graphics : where are them ?? :)

Overall : 5 (I'm sure this group might deserve more in the future
but I wouldn't give more than a 5/10 for this first
demo...This is because of the fact there's mainly
only one effect...)
Of course,those "points" are given in comparison with the *belgian* average
level of prior releases.
There was also another belgian release for the Wired 96,a 64k-intro from
Ketchup Killers (ex-Antares) but I can't review it without loosing a part
of objectivity :)

Btw1: Cray made a little error, the group (and demo) is called Itsari, with
a 'i'; you'll find the demo in ITSARI.ZIP
Btw2: check out the Reverse intro by the Ketchup Killers (KK-RVSF.ZIP). It's
a real nice intro, with a cool wireframe-motionblur-donut-kinda thing :)
And now some shorter reviews of some new belgian releases: (I just randomly
picked some of the belgian releases in the upload-dir of my board)

# Ovation 12/96 artpack (OVT-1296.ZIP) 7.5/10
Well, this is now already 1.5 months old, maybe there's even a new pack
out by the time you read this, but this is the Ovation come-back pack, so
lets review it: There are 16 ansi's in the pack, especially Count Dracula's
work is very good. I didn't like the ascii's in the pack that much, Speed
Freak made some good one's (f.i. sf-cb!.ovt). There are also a bunch of
vga's, mostly made by Cyclops, some are really cool (tly t-shirt picture)
but some aren't that good.
Overall a real nice pack, but not the best one in ovation's history.
# Fuel 9th artpack (FUEL#9.ZIP) 8.5/10
If I review ovation's pack, I've got to review this one too, I guess :)
Fuel too is back, after an icy adventure. I think this is Fuel's best pack
ever. Soooo, get it ! (too bad we couldn't see the ansi's that didn't get
through 'quality control', maybe they should include them in a separate zip)
btw: the 10th pack has just been released.
# Prozac 01/97 artpack (PRO-0197.ZIP) 4.5/10
Another artpack. I think this was the first pack Prozac released, it
wasn't that bad, but it was their first pack, so you can't compare it to
the two other packs reviewed. I'm pretty sure they will get better. Most
ascii's weren't bad, however they weren't really original. The ansi's just
sucked ;) and there were some not too bad vga's by the ripper.
# Focus Solo Pack EP (FCS-PCK1.ZIP) 8/10
A music pack, including 3 songs by Semtex. I really like this techno-ish
sound, that's why I gave it such a high score, maybe some of you won't
like this music at all. This pack is really worth the download. (btw 'Coke
Revival' was my favorit song)
# Amens Corp JPG Art Pack (AC-ART#1.ZIP) 6/10
This is a new group which my board happens to be dist-site of, so lets
review it :) There are 10 jpg's in the pack. Some aren't that original, but
there are some really style-ish vga's in the pack (f.i. the inner circle ad)
Check it out to see some new talent in the belgian scene.

message: "the last 'known' bdppack was juni 1996. After that we didn't
releas anything, we even quitted the scene for about 5/6 months. Then,
jan. 97 i joined the scene again and released a final bdppack (jan. 97)
with art that should be released in our july 96 but never got released.
But because bdp had been inactive (read: leaved the scene) for 6/7
months, bdp lost its position of the only pure ' belgian' artgroup.
Therefor i first kicked everyone out of bdp and then i even broke up
the group. Since the announcement i had no group to draw for, i
received many, many requests to join other groups. Sorry guys, i
really appreciate your interests but i've decided to go solo, i do not
want to be part of a particular group rite now. For the rC-fans (rite),
