This mag is made BY the Belgian scene FOR the Belgian scene. It is a stand
alone project, not linked to any group. I, Baxter, am only compiling it and
writing the edito. ANYBODY interested in writing ANY of the other stuff in the
mag, or contributing to it in any other way, is free to do so. Of course the
groups/dudes contributing to the mag will be mentioned in 'grandeur'. I only
reserve the right of refusing certain articles due their contents to myself.

Here we go again. This time we have a great interview with an even better
coder: Skal. He's from France, but he won the wired'96 demo contest ...

I'm thinking about reviewing and/or listing as much belgian releases as
possible, because I can't call to bbs's too much I need your help. If you
release something new (and of course belgian) and you want me to review/list
it, there are some possibilities:
# upload it to Footprint, and leave me (the sysop) a message.
# ftp it to ftp.ulyssis.student.kuleuven.ac.be, ftp.cdrom.com or anywhere
else and send e-mail to peter.backx@rug.ac.be with the FULL PATH where I
can find these files. Do NOT send the files by e-mail, only the location !
Well, maybe this list is a dumb idea :) I'll see if I get enough support.

I even got some reactions from the following people, who are hereby greeted:
Amens, Cray, Freedom, Acid126, Sleeping Dog (still reading ? =) ), Kurt, Herr
Cichlid, Burps, ... and all the others.

There will be nog bsr in january. I have some things (=exams) to do :-(
Expect the next mag around 15 february. Keep on sending me news, articles,
whatever, or I'll stop this thing ...

btw: I wish you all a merry x-mas, a great new-year, etc etc ...

# Blade Runner told me that the # in the name gave some troubles on Unix
systems, I didn't have any problems with it, but anyway, I changed it to `-'
If I have enough time left next month I'll change the whole layout so that
it only includes the first 128 charachters, which would also make it look
better on other (not pc) systems.

# It seems I'm no longer vice-president of axf, because I'm too lazy.

# Sleeping Dog's demo-ftp-site (ftp://hagar.arts.kuleuven.ac.be) has a new

[ Cray send me two articles about the Belgian scene, because they fit together]
[ quite well, I've put them into one article... ]

Were are we going to ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just remember the year 1994 were the belgian scene was still alive !
Wired 94,what a cool party ... ; a competition between almost all the
belgian groups with nice productions...and a lot of fun !
A year later,Wired 95 was a rather poor party for belgian productions,only
3 demos were shown.Did it mean that Belgium has only 3 demo groups ?
I fear... :(
Wired 96 was the baddest party for belgian productions...Year after year
it becomes worse (in number of releases)...Will we hit the ground next
year with a ZERO release of the belgian scene ? That's the challenge...and
it won't be difficult if we follow the way we're in !
So,let's become original ; let's make some productions ( *real* productions
like demos,intros,.... not the xxxx-th ppe or the yyyy-th boum boum XM) ;
let's wake up from your lazyness (this is for coders) ; give us back our
beloved belgian scene !
The biggest troubles of the belgian scene come from coders...They are
lazy especially in Belgium...I know code is alot of work but then make
little demos or intros (with design),it'll be far better than nothing.
Now the future is up to you...If the belgian scene remains like today,
let's stop consider there's a belgian scene.
Write some articles for the Belgian Scene Report,let's deal about your
future projects ; about your group or so...Let's BSR be the first step
of a new and productive belgian scene...That's my only wish !
I had a dream ... a belgian scene !
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So here we go..This is a little article about myself and what I've done
and will do in the future.I hope to read about you or your group in next
issues of BSR !

I've been knowing the scene since 1993 and soon decided with a friend
(Unknown) to make a group which was called North Crew (not a funny name I
know...).We released our first demo (the 'EXTREME' demo) in August 94
and it wasn't that bad for our first try or at least for the belgian scene
which never has been (and will be ?) on the top.We then changed our name
to ISCH CREW and made various productions (Cult intro at Wired 94),Black
demo at SIH 95 but this last one suffered from a lack of design because the
coder was really lazy.I then joined FUEL at the Wired 95 but it seems
that like every belgian groups,we aren't very productive :( We have ideas
of releases but like *always* the coders mess the all thing thru their
inactivity...That is,no way to release a thing,as a result why should we
(graphicians and musicians) work to make art that will never be used ??
And this has a consequence that nobody works at all and the whole belgian
scene falls into deep inactivity ! What a pitty...

I'm not like that,I get some fun drawing and that's why I decided to drop
a bit for the moment the scene (as it's asleep) and work on a game but
once again the problem of finding a coder rises :) But I don't care for
the moment,I'm sure I'll find someone a day (someone which isn't in the
belgian demo scene cause I don't want "lazy people" =:-) )
And if we succeed,it'll be the first real belgian shareware as shareware
creators in Belgium are also very poor...It seems Belgium is suffering
from a general lack of artist and I really don't understand why...There
are very good artist in UK,GERM,NL and FR,our neighbour countries,and
why not in Belgium ?? (Except for Imphobia of course).

So wake up,let's get a belgian scene like in 1994,it was soo cool...
Nostalgy must rulez !

³ 6. Interview With Skal Baxter ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

Here's an interview with the winner of the Wired '96 demo competition, he's
not belgian, but I guess the fact that he won _the_ belgian party makes him
important enough to interview him :)

1. Let's start with the questions every interview starts with: who are you,
where do you live, how old are you, what do you do irl, etc etc

I'm currently working for my thesis (theoretical physics) in France
(Cergy's university), I'm 25 year old and I live in Paris.

2. How did you start in the demoscene? How did you get this weird handle ?
Have you made any previous productions (before 'hard rox'), because,
honestly, I had never heard of you before :) ..

Weird Handle ? Well, it comes from a habit we (a group of friends)
had in high school: calling each others with the *last* syllable of
our names instead of the usual first one. Try. It's funny :)

Rox is actually my first production in the demo scene. I mostly
used Unix before...

then something about demo's ...
3. What's for you the most important in demo's, coding, design, music, gfx?

I can't think of any motivated answer here, since I lack experience
in demo making. I would say the most important, for me, is the
portability/re-usability/easy-to-modify -ness of the code.
When you have some general and robust routines (I mostly work
in C), you can change every GFX/design you want within 5 minutes
of time and 20 lines of code. I think that helps...

4. Are you in some group ? 'hard rox' was a solo production, what's your main
interest in the scene ?

I'm just coding for fun, alone, when I have time. I bought myself
a PC, for being able to work at home. And later on, a friend of
mine bring me what he called a 'demo' (it was Statix's 'Headeache'),
and, whoaou, I realised that with nowaday's computers, real-
time graphics were made possible to an extend I couldn't imagine,
since last time I saw/coded things in ASM, it was on my
C64, long before :)

5. Could you give us some names of people, groups and production you really
admire ? Who (if any) are your examples in the demo scene ?

Well, I spent lot of time watching other people's demo, and
trying afterward to re-code their effects. Most impressive
were Psychic Link, Valhalla (of course), NoOon, Waterlogic
ones, as far as I remember...

6. There's this discussion right now, if we should start coding demo's for
win95, as this is indeed the system most of the new computer users are using
these days. Do you think there's a future for some kind of 'win95 demo
scene' or do you think we'll move on to our own demOS or will it be linux ?
You're probably gonna answer linux is the best :) so could you tell us (who
are just plain dos users right now) why linux is so good ...

What seems appealing with Windoze, is the fact that there's a lot
of softwares available with it (3DS, etc...). But that does not
mean a demo should *run* under W95... Actually, which OS you use to
run a demo does not matter a lot: the demo will take any CPU
resources available, anyway... But with W95, you're not sure the
whole won't crash unexpectedly for some unknown reasons. Not to
mention the security problems...
Mostly, I found two advantages in coding under Linux:
* the environment (X11+a window manager) is really cool when you're
used to it. A window to compile, a window to edit the code, etc...
Fealing at ease with it ...
* With X11, you don't have to care about which video board you're
running the demo with: all the drivers setups, specific
acceleration goodies, etc... have been done at installation time,
and the X11 server is doing the job for you. Not to mention the
new DGA (Direct Graphic Access) specs available with XFree86
versions (>3.2).
To finish with, my Linux system never crashed, whereas W95.... Well.:)

In future, one could imagine a 'special demo' module for
Linux (module are sort of code you 'plug in' the kernel...),
or some 'distributed compo' in coding parties: just imagine a
realtime ray-trace compo running with the ethernet-ed ~300 PCs
available in parties, with specially designed Linux module...

7. Another discussion is about animation. 'hard rox' didn't use any animation
as far as I know, do you think animations can add something extra to a demo
or should we totally ban animation from demo's ?

Animation ? Does it mean 'video' re-play ? If so, in demos I watched
using video player, this thing wasn't really bringing something
new...:( Just dunno whether it should be ban or something...
Maybe create a special compo category ? Video effects compo ...?

8. and last but not least : 3D; do you think 3d only demo's can be good,
should we go to more or less 3d ? do you think those 3d accelerator boards
will get popular ? or will we have to code everything ?

The amount of 3D one wants to put is its demo is just a matter of
taste. I don't think there should be any rule in this matter...
For 3D accelarator boards, well... according to the eagerness
of vendors to distribute their docs about the 3D-board, it will
be long since we (common humans) can get a hand on them...
Moreover, where's the coding fun if everything is done by the
board ? :)

9. Do you regularly go to parties or was wired'96 your first party ? if you
went to other parties, which did you like best ? and are you planning on
going to parties in the future ? which ones ? :)
10. Did you have fun at wired'96 ? :) or were there other better parties ?
What did you think about the 'general level' of the demo's, intro's etc ...
(good, stupid, easy, complex, ...)

Actually, the Wired was the first party I attended. Fun. I like this
'ambiance'. I wish I could go to the TP6, but I didn't know it
was held between Xmas and NewYear... got some other appointements :(
Next one, then ?

11. Do you have any future plans ? a new demo ? new .... ?

Dunno. I'm just coding some few things I find worth the try, and
when I'll have enough of, well... :)

12. That's about it, if you want to say anything else, just go ahead..

it's weird a thing, making an interview...Not used to...
I prefer #demofr chatting :)

Next issue an interview with a belgian scene member !?
