Jewishmysticism, notions of the Antichrist
and images of the apocalypse in modern
popular culture, from rock music & films to
politics and the environment.

Israel, and other nations contributed essays.
The three books are in chronological
overview: the first looks at the origins of
apocalypt icism in Judaism &
Christianity; the second, in Western history
& culture; the final one deals with the

next five years, a long list of Christian prophecy teachers, Jewish kabbalists,
Satanists, astrologers and UFO believers all forsee the Earth's imminent and abrupt
demise. These folks generally don't agree on much, but they all see signs that the end
is at hand. Depending on which doomsday you believe in, the world will end
somewhere between August 18, 1999 and 2012. "It is very comforting for many
people to believe they are the generation who will meet God or see the end of time,"
he says. "It makes them feel significant."

EARTHQUAKE NEWS -- A magnitude-5.7 quake occurs at 5:59pm local time in

100 miles away. An earthquake specialist says, "This quake was not very big... but it
was very deep." No injuries or damage reported. Another temblor hits off the coast
of Oregon, magn-4.0.
CLEANING UP INDIA'S HOLIEST RIVER -- Every day, some 60,000
people bathe in India's holiest river -- the Ganges River - However, experts say the
river is dangerously polluted with tons of sewage poured into it every day by the very
same Indians who worship it. In addition to sewage waste, the occasional dead
animal or partially cremated human body can be seen floating down the river.
POPOCATEPETL ERUPTION -- The Popocatepetl volcano, located 65km (40
miles) from Mexico City, spews a 4km (2.5 mile) cloud of ash & smoke over the
southeastern suburbs of the capital.

Solar activity is high. An optically uncorrelated X1 X-ray burst is detected at
23/0555Z, associated with a large coronal mass ejection and accompanied by a
10.7cm radio burst of 430 SFU, making it a tenflare and a type IV sweep.

EARTHQUAKE NEWS -- Another tremor strikes in the coastal waters off
Oregon, magn-4.1. A magnitude-5.2 quake hits south of the Mariana Islands
(12.68N, 142.87E). Most on New Zealand's North Island feel a magnitude-6.3
quake as it shakes the region late this morning. A total of 1179 quakes -- all but 31
of them too weak to be felt by people -- have hit the coast of Japan, southwest of
Tokyo, since Monday afternoon. A magnitude-5.0 quake hits the northeastern coast
of Japan at 1:58pm local time.

SETI pulses - At the University of Indianapolis we have noticed short pulses of less
than a minute duration. The produce very sharp spikes in the output of the RA
receiver. They sometimes produce a sharp downward deflection of the RA receiver
output, which we suspect is due to strong interference near the passband that
desenses the receiver. We suspect that the pulses are interference. In order to negate
the possiblity that the pulses are not interference but are from phenomena from
someplace other than earth, we would like to run an experiment over the next two
weeks.

HOMELESS IGUANAS ROAMING LOS ANGELES -- Hundreds of
homeless, angry and malnourished South American gree iguanas are loose in Los
Angeles. Considered trendy pets just five years ago, the once-small pets are growing
into 6-foot long pests that are being discarded by their owners. And it's not just a
Los Angeles problem. They're fleeing to Phoenix, building colonies and reproducing
in Florida, when they're not fighting each other. Dead or alive, these reptiles could
mess up the ecosystem. They may harbour bacteria and other organisms that can
infect humans (with salmonella) and even kill off some animal populations, experts
say. The glut of iguanas has caused some zoos and wildlife rescue groups to stop
taking them -- there's just too many to place. (Reuters)

According to the agriculture minister, the locusts alone have already damaged 7.5

FIRE:
She sat cross legged on the floor in the darkened room.
With every deep lung tearing pull on the pipe she was smoking, her cheeks
lit up like burning embers in a fire place, illuminating the area around her
head.
Her face was on fire.
With each inhale I could see more of the burning, melting, liquifying flesh
of her head. Her left ear was a melted nub, dripping goblets of flesh onto
her shoulder like a candle that has almost served its purpose.
Yet still she smokes that pipe.
Near invisible flames dance up the right side of her head as she sucked
in each pull like it was her last breath.
Watching her I knew she had to smoke that pipe to live, even though it
was killing her.
I could smell her cooking.
Her eyes began to melt out of their sockets and run down her
molten cheeks like kids chocolate Easter eggs melting in the hot sun.
Her whole head was now a glowing ember.
Still she smoked that pipe.
DAMAGE:
..at 5:29:45 A.M., the man who was to be hanged became The
Hanged-Man. His body swinging in time to the rock music blaring
from a ghetto blaster.
He was more shocked at the sudden, brief realization of his bowels
emptying themselves, like a mass liquid exodus of fleas from a
dying rat, than at the feeling and sound of his neck breaking. His
eyes bulging as they rolled back into their sockets, further than
possible in life... His tongue thrashing, trying desperately not to be
sucked backwards down his broken throat.
Woke up this morning and found myself dead.
* * * *
Harsh white like a hundred bleached suns melding into blood red
eyes, into an all consuming black.
No stars. No moon. Nothing...
In abundance.
Silence came screaming as the tape in the ghetto blaster reached its
end. Shadows crossed the machine as a hand reached down to flip
the tape. As the tape/snake hiss was overtaken by music that same
hand began to slap against a thigh creating its own thick rhythm to
go along with the music.
The swinging shadow of The Hanged-Man faded in the distance as
his killer walked away, fading into the foreground, almost like
neither would exist without the other there to verify it. Neil Young's
disembodied voice from the tape player left behind rode the wind
like a shadow.
I've seen the needle and the damage done,
a little part of it in everyone
But every junkies' like a setting sun...

The elevator door opened to darkness, not the darkness of night or
a windowless room, but the darkness of a human mind. A mind so
alone, so very black that the night itself would be shamed. In the
middle of that wretched black was a thought;
Hell's not such a bad place.
And if the one walking away could see back into the shadows, he
would see a sardonic grin upon The Hanged-Mans' face.
Yes indeed, Hell is not such a bad place...

There is a place by the broken light where strangers get caught up
in their dreams, where smiles are superimposed grinning skulls,
where a tear is silence falling and laughter is just. There is a place
where not all dreams are good or bad, some just are...
* * * *
As The Hang-Mans' dead, grinning corpse hauled itself up the rope
it hung by, the place by the broken light was in his eyes. The living
corpse cut itself free and fell with sullen thud, sending little dust
clouds up into the first rays of the morning sun.
Shadows stretched from the boot heels of his killer to The
Hanged-Man's toes, lightly dancing there like a cold caress. The
Hanged-Man awkwardly made it to his feet, his head lolling back
and forth, as if in time with the music.
PLAGUE:
~I~
The sun refracted grey/green beams
through the perma-smog. The man
with the oilskin coat stood at the
door way of the shed surveying the
Plagueland below - a vast, filthy,
disease ridden post apocalyptic
shantytown of people, animals - all
things living - that were waiting to
die. Those without the Plague settled
on the hills, referred to as the
Highlands, over looking this
purgatory.
"Something has to be done to those
who brought this on." He spoke to
no one in particular.
"Amigo, you've said that before.
Many times. But I ask you, what can
you or I or anyone else stuck in this
shithole existence do? Better yet
Amigo, who would we do it to?
After all, are we not all responsible
for this?" Came the reply from
darkened interior of the shed where
several men sat in various stages of
discomfort against the interior walls.
"Hmmh. I just lived in this world, I
didn't make it."
"But by living in it Amigo, you helped
destroy it. We all did."
"Bullshit. That's New World Order
propaganda. I didn't believe it
before, I don't believe it know. In
fact, I believe it was the NWO that
brought all this on - on purpose."
"Ahh, the NWO conspiracy theory.
That's as old as I am Amigo. You
don't really buy into that old New
Socialists word-drool do you? They
blamed everything on the NWO, big
business, the Pope, the Jews -
everyone except themselves. If they
spent as much energy on ideas as
they did on throwing blame around
Amigo, they might have made a
difference·"
The man in the doorway all but
ignored the subtle taunt from inside
the shed and continued on.
"The way I see it one man is
responsible ultimately - the
President. Once he changed the
constitution and declared himself
President for life the shit really hit the
fan and it's gotten worse from there
on."
"And what do you propose to do
about it Amigo?"
Pulling a handgun from his waistband
- a nickel plated Colt 45 six shooter
- outlawed, as all firearms for
civilians had been, since before the
Crash, the man with oilskin coat held
it up in his right hand to shoulder
level as he stood in the doorway,
ensuring that those in the room saw
it/him in silhouette only, and replied
"I'm going to find the President."
With that he started out the door and
down the hill. Not bothering to wait
for a reply from within the shed.

The rain fell in clumps rather than
drops. Grey mercury like clumps that
could really hurt you if hit the wrong
way. It was this 'solid rain', as it was
referred to, that killed every tree,
and most other forms of plant life, in
Washington state years ago. Life
since the Crash had gone from
Technicolor to 256 shades of grey.
Sort of like Seattle forever.
The man with oilskin coat sat in the
mouth of an unused drainage tunnel
watching the solid rain fall to the
ground with distinct splat sounds as
the clumps hit the pavement and
broke apart into smaller clumps that
more closely resembled drops of a
time gone by. Only mad dogs and
Englishmen would brave these
storms.
KITE:
...and the little boy inside said let's go fly a kite 'till we die and
we'll climb the hydro tower and play with the dog black dog
tail wagging dog in the field and we'll have memories of this forever.
SELF PORTRAIT:
We burn so hard, but we shed so little light; it makes us crazy and sad

-CHARACTER
Kid 14 - 15 years old, male, tossing turning in bed, having a bad dream
-SCENE 1: DREAM
( provides basis for story) Kid is in a house with others, noises coming
from the washroom, other people KNOW it's something evil possessing the
room. Kid musters up courage to enter room; speaks to the possessor;
KID
"In the name of God I command you to leave!"
Upon witch the shower turns on and thumping sounds comes from behind the
wall.
KID
"In the name of all that's Holy, I command you to leave this place!
I am not afraid of you! In God's name I command you to leave!"
All hell breaks loose, the room demolishing from within itself, stretching
out of shape etc... The kid runs from the room crying and then wakes up.
-SCENE 2: KID AWAKE
Kid is disturbed by dream, lying on his back in bed when he hears a knock
on the door of his house. No one else is home. He tentatively answers it
and it turns out to be a helper of the Devil's. He's big, ugly, stereotypical
biker type, sent to get the kid back into the dream. A fight ensues and the
kid wins after dragging the helper by his heels all thru the house; up the
stairs, down the stairs, finally throwing him off the front porch into a
large tree saying;
KID
"You tell the Devil that if he wants me, then next time he better
come himself."
-SCENE 3: FADE TO LIFE
Story ends inconclusively, with the possibility for another chapter.
