For some strange reason I really hate this section..
This really is just *TOO LAME* even for a newbie prod like this.
Oh well, maybe someone will find it useful..
Slang on the net and demoscene is a topic wich most people have a love-hate
relationship to. Some people think it's just fun,
and interesting to explore, while others claim that it shows a
lack of intelligence and excpression on the Internet.
If you belong to the former group then you will find this
chapter useful.
:-) "This is a smiley. There are many variations. Tilt your head, and you'll
see."
<grin> "Sentence is said with a grin."
<flame> "Kinda means: I'm angry, take this!"
<sigh> "Sentence is said with a sigh."
Ack "Agreed. Short for Acknowledged."
Afk "Away From Keyboard."
AI "Artificial Intelligence."
Assembly "A programming environment that allows the programmer to have
nigh on complete control of what the CPU is doing at any time.
Very complicated. Very fast. Use it."
Bamf "Bad-ass motherfucker."
BBS "An electronic bulletin board which provides information and files."
Bounce "Recieving your own mail in return because of an error in its
delivery."
Bridge "A device allowing two different types of network systems to
exchange data."
Bug "A non-intentional programming error, sometimes causing the system
to crash etc."
Bulletproof "A program with absolutely no bugs."
C64 "Commodore 64. Actually I think this is a great system for demos,
and so do many other people. A lot of the big parties have C64-compo's."
Coder "Programmer."
Compo "Short for competition."
CPU "Central Prossesing Unit. The computers <<brain>>, allmost.."
Crack "To break down a software copying protection system to enable
pirate-copying. Or to break into other peoples systems."
Cracker "Someone who cracks. A malicious hacker."
Cracktro "A demo appearing before the start of a cracked program to tell
you who cracked it."
Crash [Bomb] "If a computer crashes it brakes down in some way or another.
It can stop responding to the keybord or mouse. The screen can
go blank. etc. A bomb occurs when the program crashes in such
a way that it restarts your computer."
Darksider "A hacker which performs illegal actions, and does not follow
<<hacker-ethics>>. Not quite as bad as a cracker, but not good
either. There are a lot more darksiders now then there were
a few years ago. Up until recently I've also used this expression
to describe windows-coders..."
Demo [Intro] "A programmed real-time-animation often with music.
Often programmed in pure assembly. A good demo will be
programmed using very advanced steps, and are often very
impressing to look at, and listen to. As opposed to animations
there is a lot of pride that goes into it's speed, and that it
has poetic, or artistic content, not just, fancy gfx.
I really feel I could write a book on the subject,
so it's difficult to describe properly here."
Demo-group "A group of people involved in the scene who are together as
a group with the purpose of creating demos together,
and having fun."
Demo-Party "A gathering of people in the demoscene often with competitions
to make the best demo. There are normally around 3000 people at
a well-known demo-party. Demo-parties often last over
two or three days, and sometimes longer. The most well-known
parties are <<The Assembly>> in Finland,
<<The Party>> in Denmark, <<NAID>>, in North-America,
<<The Gathering>> in Norway, and <<Wired>> in Belgium."
Dentro "A mix between an intro, and a demo. Often used for introductory-demos
for new groups, new members, or new products. Sometimes called a
256k-intro."
Down-time "Time not spent in front of a computer. Or time during which
a BBS or Internet-site is non-operational."
FAQ "A FAQ is a document containing answers to Frequently Asked Questions
on some subject or other."
Finger "A program that gives information about a net-user. Often his
real name, telephone-number, etc."
Freemail "Free e-mail services. Mainly web-based."
gfx "Graphics."
GUS "Short for Gravis UltraSound. An extremely good soundcard supported
and recommended by most demos. No longer in production."
Hacker "A hacker is a person which is very often confused with a cracker.
Sometimes crackers call themselves hackers. A hacker is a person
(often a programmer) who enjoys digging deeper and deeper in to the
system. Seeking out its secrets, its bugs, and its beauty.
They enjoy knowing as much as possible about computers.
Normally these people bend the law, rather then completely
shattering it."
Hacker-Ethics "A set of <<rules>> followed by some hackers wich prevents
hackers from doing serious damage. A bit like look, but don't
touch. Hacker-ethics involve more than this, but the subject
is far to large to cover here. Used to be followed a lot
more before, than it is today."
Handle "A name used by a person on the net which is not his real name.
My handle is Zippy."
Hypertext "A word in a document that, if clicked on with a mouse will
transport you to somewhere else in the document, or another

Networks in the world."

For example an office network, university network,
city-network, or a commercial network."
Internet relay chat [IRC,talk] "Internet relay chat is an internet service
that allows many people
to talk to each other in real-time.
You will need an IRC-program to use IRC.
Talk is similar but you 'talk' through a
unix-command to speak in real-time to someone
else. It takes the other person's e-mail
adress as a parameter."
Internet Society "The Internet Society is a non-profit membership
organization which helps the Internet evolving. They hold
an annual meeting, and release a quarterly newsletter."
Intro "Effectively a small demo. There are three types of intro:
* 4k: These are very difficult to program, and assembly is a must.
You must keep the size of it under 4 kilobytes.
Smaller than this text!
* 64k: The most common form of intro, these can be very impressive,
and sometimes very short. You will find 64k-intro-compo's
at most demo-parties. Size must stay under 64 kilobytes
* 80k: A format not used very much, and not very different from
64k-intro's. Size-limitation is 80 kilobytes."
IRL "In Real Life."
KOTC "Kiss On The Cheek."
KOTL "Kiss On The Mouth."
Lamer "Person with little or no knowledge about the demoscene/computers/net,
or in the field of expertize they claim to be in,

is the worst insult you can make. Typically a guy that goes
to a demo-pary, and spends the entire duration of it playing Quake."

P6 "A 80686(Pentium Pro) type CPU"
P7 "A 80786 type CPU, however I am not quite sure if this is the Pentium II
processor, or if it is a not yet developed CPU."
Pipe "This sign: | ."
Plik "An expression used about something strange, and unexplainable.
It is said that this expression first originated when the legendary
hacker-group MOD was hacking a system, and for no apparent reason
all the response they got from the system was the word Plik."
Pnambics "A fake game-demo (only an animation, not a real game),
or a (fake) demo which is only an animation-file with a viewer."
Proxy-server "This machine serves as an external cache, for everyone entitled

Spreader[Trader, courier] "A member of a demo-group,
or freelancer who spreads all sorts
of demo-scene related products through snail-mail,
e-mail, FTP, disks at demo-parties, and BBS's.
A lot of people started out in the scene as
spreaders before going on to other things.
(I was a spreader, now I'm mainly a coder,
but still spread stuff around a little.)
After going through this starter-kit you
should know enough to be able to be a spreader."
Swapper "A spreader that mainly swaps disks, and stuff through snail-mail."
