Editorial
by Civax / Moon Hunters

The biggest event in the israeli scene since last issue is, certainly, the
sudden death of Myth. Since 1995, when demo parties started here, there
were always 2 parties every year. Movement in December, and a second,
different, party in the summer holiday. In 1996 the summer party was
Summit, in 1997 it was Ritual and in 1998 it was supposed to be Myth. Now,
every year it was a different crew organizing the summer party and they
did quite ok. This year I expected even more as Krembo, Myth's main
organizer, was also a Co-Organizer in Ritual. Guess I was wrong, eh? Well,
we have 2 articles this time talking about this issue, one of them is from
Krembo / Emerge himself.

---

Again, this issue is late. Again, since you guys doesn't submit articles.
So, next time you think about complaining ("hey! You promised you will
release it last tuesday!") just try to remember - "have I wrote an article
for the coming issue?" (This is for you too, Efekt...)

---

I'm going to be in Milueem for the next 3 weeks. This means I won't be
home until the 28/9. If you have anything important - get me this week.

---

I originally ordered 25 Dreams II CDs from Darkness / Imphobia with the
thought of selling them at Myth. But since Myth got canceled I'm selling
them using the mail. In the first 2 weeks more then half of it was sold I
already got few more orders. If you want to buy the set - be quick. To
save you the long info again, the set contains 2 CDs, one with demos,
intros, reports, and other cool stuff (demos are the main thing in this
disc) and the 2nd disk is dedicated to Graphics (more then 4,800 pics!!)
and Music (awesome collection!). The whole set (the 2 CDs) costs 75 Nis,
80 if you need it to be sent by mail. It's less then an audio CD and it's
worth alot more. Anyway, Since I'll be in milueem from next week, you
better hurry.

---

Organizing of Movement'98 is coming pretty good and fast. I hope we'll
release the Invitation after I'll be back from the army and could arrange
stuff. The web page will hopefully be up even before that.

---

Have a great time! And make GOOD products for movement! You got ENOUGH
time this year!

ÍÍ Why myth got cancelled ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[02]ÍÍ

About myth canceling - Krembo / Emerge
----------------------------------------

Hi everybody.
This article is about why Myth 98' was canceled.

Myth 98' canceled because of several problems. The main reason was that the
MATNAS (the community center where the party was supposed to be held) told
us a week or two before the party that he can't give us the place until
only after september. And even that was in question.

The second problem was our lake of experience. We were not organized well
and we didn't put attention to the time we had until the party. So we took
our time and did things slowly.

About the first problem... Well, i did my best to make this party take off
but none of my efforts were successful. I know that some of you sceners may
be mad at me, but I can tell you it's not my fault for some reasons.

The first reason is that I volunteered to organize the party so I don't
really need to explain to anyone what happened. The second reason is that
it's hard to organize a party, specially if you doesn't have experience.

I hope that you all understand, and besides, I'm sorry about it myself.

P.S.: I want to thank two people: Civax and Small brain.. they know why.

Krembo / Emerge

ÍÍ What does future technology holds? ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[03]ÍÍ

What does the future technology holds for us?
by Civax / Moon Hunters

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This article is based on a lecture by Mr. Jack Skydel,
Lihamn Brothers associate and Senior Executive - Technology group,
given at the 6th of August 1998 at the Sharon Hotel, Hertzelia, Israel.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What does the future technology holds for us?
I can bet most of you can't even imagine. Some of you probably knows that
Microsoft is working on the next generation OS, which will be based on
voice. Few of you might even installed and tried a system called 'Dragon
Dictate', which practically shows how you can really control the computer
by only talking. "Yea", you say, "but it's all bullshit.. How can one REALLY
control the computer using voice.. It's all crap and it won't work!" Well, if
that's what you think then keep reading. Actually, I'm not even going to
discuss the Voice based OS, as it is no longer a future technology...
There is a running model already in Microsoft labs. They plan on marketing
the new OS probably around 2000 - 2003 (I don't really have more specific
information about their timetable, though). Still, what if I'll tell you the
future technologies are going to make Voice OS looks like a joke? There are
companies already developing these technologies. What I'm going to tell you
here is not science fiction and it is a pretty realistic prediction made
by Lihamn Brothers Company, which specialize in investing money in new start-
ups and high-tech companies around the world. AFAIK, the prediction is based
on technologies being under development already by companies they're invested
in, so it's worth a look.

User Interface
--------------
3 to 5 years : Basic Neural Language.
What is a neural language? The term is taken from the AI (Artificial
Intelligence) field n' to avoid drifting into that subject I'll just
explain the implementation. Neural language will put end to the old
way we used to work with computers - we had to learn how to talk, or
communicate with computers. This thing will teach the computer how
to communicate with US! You'll be able to talk or write to the
machine naturally, like you're communicating with another person, n'
the AI system within the machine will do all the rest...

6 to 10 years : Gesture Recognition & Neural language.
Within this time, the computer will not only know how to communicate
with us, people, but he will also recognize our body. This means you
will be able to point with your finger instead of using a mouse, you
will be able to turn your head to different directions and the
computer will know to recognize it. Think of it like this: Everytime
you lower your head to read the last lines of a document the machine
will automatically scroll the document up, so you could read it
continuously! Also, Neural languages will invade the developers area
and will generate a new generation of developing tools (Visual C++
would be then what Fortran is today...) Now, it leaves me wondering
why does programers are always the last to enjoy new technology??

10 + years : Brainwave Recognition.
How about sitting infront of your computer and THINKING photoshop ?
Hops, here it loads... As this technology is only evolving, there
are already implementations of it in the military industry. Pilots
enjoy several years from advanced technology that will go out to the
market only a decade ahead. If you guys want to see a little
demonstration, there is a program in the Science Channel (Channel 8
in israel) that shows a prototype. A guy is plainly sitting infornt
of a computers and moves the mouse cursor only by thinking! I can't
tell you if the commercial version in 10 years will have electrodes
attached to your head like the current prototype does, but who cares?
I'm thrilled of using it in Duke3D.. THAT should be cool! ;)

Display Device
--------------
If you thought Monitors will accompany us into the next decade then you're
bloody wrong. Sure, old systems and industrial machines will use them, but
the market will be able to offer much cooler substitutes...

6 to 10 years : 3D Display.
I hope I don't have to write allot to explain this one. Its pretty
clear monitors, as being a 2D display devices, will not do. We'll
probably have some sort of device laying on the table and project
light beams up, to create an image which got 3 Dimensions. This
is way better then a screen, to my opinion, as one can really turn
around the device (or make the device rotate the image) in order
to enjoy a full 3D display. I bet demos then will start making
toruses and ducks again! :)

10 + years : Virtual Retinal Display.
For all of you, non-native-english speakers, Retinal is the the
part in the eye which is used for seeing. In hebrew it is called
RISH'TIT. The dispaly device will actually be our own eyes while
information will be projected around the eyes. It will allow a
better, more surrounding, vision and will actually let minor
stuff like virtual worlds look real. Computers will no longer catch
so much space on the table, in fact, the portable computers won't
even have a screen! Maybe just a pair of glasses! I still wonders,
however, what if I wanna watch something with a friend? Will I have
extra sockets for more VRD devices? Isn't it easier to have a
screen ? Sure, it doesn't make you PART of the world displayed, but
its more then nothing!

Storage Device
--------------

3 to 5 years : Erasable DVD.
As DVD is not only a present technology, but also future one, this
baby will replace the regular CD drives AND regular 1.44 drives. A
DVD disk is a CD that can be written on both sides (CD-ROM CDs are
only holding information on one side), and could be ERASED!
So, have you brought your Terabyte Harddisk today?

6 to 10 years : Holographic Storage.
Using a crystal data storage device appears on most Sci-Fi movies.
Guess what, it it possible!. If you store data in light and put it
in a crystal that does not let the beam get out - here you go, a
3D, Holographic storage that can have Terabytes over terabytes in
it!! (Magnetic media died. we're in the optical media age!)

Here is some more general information, which I couldn't fit in any of the
aspects I mentioned before. In 3 to 5 years, the computer itself will be
totally hooked on the net. Even in the hardware level. 6 to 10 years, the
PC would be able to communicate using neural networks (again - AI) and
will be able to diagnose its own problems and SOLVE THEM. Technicians will
only be called for MAJOR fuckups and the computer will repair the small
stuff in itself. Plug & Play technology will reach the levels of the Apple
Mac computers today long before that (maybe even this year) so adding new
hardware would be a childplay. Windows98 already done a big step forward in
this direction, though Microsoft seems to forgot some companies n' products
that were supported in windows95... In the semi-conductors (processors) the
predictions says we'll have a 1024 Mbit RAM and 3D Chips in 6 to 10 years,
following by 4096 Mbit RAM and QUANTUM based chips within 10 years or more.
Quantum based chips are going to be the next generation in silicon chips
technology, as they'll allow us to work in rates that are impossible today.
How does a 3,333 Mhz sounds? :) Also in processors technology, Intel plans
on shipping in the near future (3-5 years) a new standard of processors
that will be programmable through SOFTWARE. What does it means? Lets say
you do a 3D engine. If only you could add one order in the processors for
multiplying Matrices. Think about it - No cycles - a plain fast CPU command
- and walla! A 3D engine capable of truly amazing speeds. Ofcourse it
also got problems, say, if someone codes a virus to nest inside your CPU.
That could REALLY be a source for lots of troubles...

Well, whatever sort of technology we'll have in the future, I'm sure most
of us will already be in sitting good in the industry and watch it with our
own eyes, if not being a part of the teams creating them. I suggest you'll
save this article for 5, maybe 6 years, and we'll all see what Lihamn Bro's
Company really worth in predictions... :)

ÍÍ Greek Tragedy ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[04]ÍÍ

Greek Tragedy
By SiK
August 25th, 1998
-----------------

Prologue:
I've let myself deviate from the habit of writing stories, and donate
an article. This is not a story.
That's it, what'd you expect?

Sad.
Really.
It's such a shame. We all waited for it, but Myth '98 is now just a
myth. False expectations were not included in the menu, but hey, that's
probably the "today's special". Well then, "today's special" for
everyone! It's on me.
I guess kicking at a dead horse won't do good to anyone, so I'll skip
the sarcasm part, and find something else to discuss. It was fun,
though.

The yellow brick road dragged me across many corn fields, a flea
infested scarecrow and a very ugly girl called Dorothy, until I reached
the voting booths, at the entry to the Coders F/X BBS. My soul was
cheering, so I decided to express myself and actually vote.
Fortune smiled at me, and I ran across a voting booth that asked
something like: "If a party were to be held, and the prizes, average IQ
level, etc. were not big, would you still come?" As I've seen later,
about 60% of the voters (which represented about 6 people), said "Sure."
Now, that doesn't mean they are hypocrites - the voting is anonymous.
It means that they would rather get together, meet each other and eat
cheap hot-dogs, then to compete and win prizes.
As corny as it might seem, the scene is really a big family. It
connects people from all over the country, forming groups and exchanging
ideas. That is the true meaning of the scene. If we were just to compose
music, draw paintings, code programs or even write stories (wink), then
we would be like any ordinary artists. But the connection between us is
what FORMS the concept "scene".
However, the scene is an accelerator. It spots talented people, it
spots people who might have a future in their occupation. Try to get
people to recognize you, without that accelerator. Fat chance, buddy.
You don't get famous, or even known, if you don't show your works to
other people. Try comparing that to knitting a sweater, and you won't
find anything similar.

I'm not disqualifying the desire of people to win big, shiny, wet and
expensive prizes. But I really believe the desire to meet the friends
you have acquired, face to face, overcomes the lust for gold.
It is the same as talking to a friend over the Internet, or even on
the phone, without meeting him. After all, over the phone or over the
keyboard you can behave differently, but when you meet face to face,
everything, including appearance, is seen.

I'm not going to lecture here about the bad situation of the Israeli
scene. I practically don't care. You can deal with that issue all you
want, it won't do you any good. The fact that the amount of products in
contests is dropping, doesn't say anything. Look around you! Every
family with average income can afford a computer today. The '90 kids are
called "the computer generation". You can't work your entire life as a
computer artist, without eventually discovering the scene! DUH!

The fact that there aren't so many demo-parties here in Israel doesn't
have any connection to the condition of the scene. It merely shows how
difficult it is to raise such a big event, and keep it up - hence the
Myth '98 Crash 'n' Burn.
When a party is finished, don't leave the place and say: "by god, that
party sucked." At least, don't say it around any of the organizers.
Can you do better?
Do you even know where to start?
Ha! I don't think so. It takes great effort and responsibility to put
together such a big thing, so don't complain and let others do the work.
Now, I'm not saying: "Hey, d'you have Friday off? Let's throw a demo
party!" - over 'partying' can be quite disastrous.
Gather your scener-friends that live around you, examine what it takes
to throw such a party, consult someone who already did so, and if the
time and date are appropriate... Why not?

That probably sounds like a lot of empty words. Well, you are correct.
Unfortunately, I live in a "Scener-Free Area", so I can't really tell
you anything about this issue. Too bad you didn't skip the last
paragraph, it was really dispensable.

This article doesn't have an educational moral, nor a specific
purpose. I was just depressed when the formal announcement of the
cancellation of Myth '98 came out (ooh, big sentence).
So, either you are all lazy bums, or just apathetic, it doesn't
mattar. We'll all be cooked up in our tiny homes, 'till the nuclear
winter comes. Death will be a blessing to the fortunate ones, still the
others will feel the true wrath of the gods, all because they did not
consider having a demo party.
And that, my friends, is truly, life's greek tragedy.

Epilogue:
That was an article, not a story.
What did you expect?

ÍÍ Criticism: Faith Musicdisk ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[05]ÍÍ

Criticism about Faith Musicdisk / Velocity

The first thing that must be said on X-Rabbit is that he is one
of the most interesting trackers our scene has.
O.K., so his harmonies aren't perfect, and his solos sometimes out
of tune, but he has a style of his own, his songs are originally
and they express feelings, what we usually don't hear on tracked
tunes.

You can't say on any of the song in Faith that it is perfect.
But that is their beauty, that though they aren't perfect, you can hear
how much effort was brought into them, and how much love X-Rabbit
put there.

But let's cut the crap... if you are one of those who already downloaded
the song, you don't need to read this , but if you didn't, you want to
know if you should. So, if you ask me, you should.
Because X-Rabbit's tunes, are different from most of the tunes you heard
so far. They are all from his own style, and if you like them, you'll
love the musicdisk, if you don't... :).
X-Rabbit isn't trying to be someone else and do what other people like.
He doesn't do Trance or Acid and stuff. He does his music for himself.
And that's what should be.

So let's start with the songs themselves ... ok?

1. Alone 98
For you that heard the song in its previous version, you know how big
the change is from that version to here.
The song is a little over-pianoish, and you can almost believe that
X-Rabbit plays the piano or atleast crazy about pianos (the second answer
is right... The chords here aren't so interesting. But they give you
some kind of a special mood. And the solo, though he is very limited, and
not free with his bit (and you can even think he used the piano as a
rhythm section there... ) You can understand what X-Rabbit ment there.

2. Faith Theme
Oh, X-Rabbit made a big mistake in that one...
The song isn't very interesting, while he tried to get "out" of his
original style. The solo, he is like thousands of miles away from the
background, like playing in another song. Everything in common between
the solo and the background, is not on purpose... :)
Nevermind...

3. Heartless Mindgames
Phes, Moshe, where do you get those names from ?!?!? :)
As far as the chords and harmony concern this is the best song in Faith.
The same mood as in Alone, but here he is better expressed and composed.
You can obviously see that Moshe's style is getting better, and his
composing skills grow with it.
Still the solo of the flute is a little bit strange... Moshe didn't learn
yet that in a solo there could be some pauses, so the solo doesn't stop
for a second and give us time to really listen to it.
generally. a better song. Next...

4. Little Kitty's Lullaby
This is a very sweat tune. You can almost see the little kitty hiding
there behind the Impulse Tracker screen...
Moshe did a good job here with the rhythm section, that isn't too fast
or too strong for the tune. It is perfect for it.
Nice tune . Next...

4. The Legion of The Damned
Wow. Wow. And Wow again.
If you ask me, THIS is the best tune in Faith. Not just in Faith, it is
tune in our scene. Why? because it tells you a story. Just like X-Rabbit
wrote the story of this tune in words, he wrote him also with note, with
instrument with chords, and with a special mood he created in here.
What ruining the song a little bit is order 12-15. Where suddenly the
solo became for some reason happy. But that's just for four patterns.
from order 16 and on, the song returns to be beautiful and special.
Good work. Next...

5. Metal Tears.
That's a nice song too, but in the start it is way over pianoished, and
the piano has a very slow note-fade. VERY slow note fade... (but that's
only my opinion... ).
The solos here are much better then in the other songs, and they don't
loose their mood even for a second. they are really good (but again,
that's only my opinion).
from order 19 the song become smthing else, a quiet song, and that's a
beautiful part, till the end. A major progress for the rabbit.

6. Sands of Sadness
This song was also in Movement 97, so I don't need to talk about it...
DNA Groove already criticized him in CFX News 026... go and read... :)

7. The Search of Innocence
This tune is nice in the beginning, but is getting a little boring
when you keep listening to it. His major problem is that he is just
TOO LONG and repeating itself. X-Rabbit tried and succeed in doing a
little more "happy" song in here... :)

8. The zipper Accident
X-Rabbit song wrote that that is a Silly song. Well... it is. Ok, the
start is funny, but the tune isn't really a tune, but just a silly joke.
As this kind of tune, I accept it. Nice... but not his "serious" stuff.
the solo of the flute is ... how to say it ... not good. It doesn't fit
well with the harmony, oh well.
This is it, the last song was finished.

ok, summery: You need to judge by ourselves... so go d/l the tune....
it will cost you only 0.60 shekels!!! (Bezeq... )

Take your Time

ÍÍ What des sceners think abut Myth'98 ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[06]ÍÍ

What does sceners says about Myth'98
by Civax / Moon Hunters

Well, as I saw read some messages of angry sceners on the local CFX mail,
I went and composed a little questionnaire. This is the result. 18 people
had something to say (except things like "sux! sux! sux!" or "the sysop
is bugs bunny!"). I also added my own opinion at the bottom.

- Octan (Rotem Segal) : You didn't have so much activities in this fucking
holiday so this demo party was supposed to be the thing that'll do the
Holiday, and I am also angry about the organizers! But now there are more
products for Movoment98.

- Krembo / Emerge (Nir Chervoni) : You ask me? I think you should kill the
main organizer!

- Borzom : Uh. organizers suck :) probably didn't find sponsors and stuff..
next time announce a party when you arrange all the basic stuff :)

- Tristan / Ivory & KFMF (Eyal Ben-Or) : What a shit. I wanted to meet
civax. Oh boy. Hey! Don`t you worry!!! Civax will organize us a GREAT
PARTY!!!! :-)

- Small Brain / Ivory (Idan Richman) : Well, it's a shame, but lets don't
get angry on krembo, well, maybe a little. But atleast he had tried.
Something that many of us didn't do. I wanted to be in myth. I have
waited for it. i was disappointed. HAVAL!

- Efekt (Shay Livyatan) : I THINK IT SUCKS! I've been expecting for this
one so much, and then, when I heard it was canceled, i was furious! I
wanted to meet the Israeli scene from a closer point of view, but a bad
Preparations and organizing stood in my way, leaving me disappointed and
confused.

- Alex Levinson : cool!!!!!!!!!!!

- Mad Mongo (Amit Liber) : It wasn't Krembo's total fault. I think we
should get a RGB launcher and show that's little @#$@#$^$^#^ matnas.

- Velocity / Lynx (Saar Szekely) : Hh, this really fucked up our planes...
Lynx wanted it's first demo to be presented there. And I got to say we
were really mad when we heard that myth is going to be canceled, atleat
I did.... But everyone else don't seem to really care... X-Rabbit, and
MasterBoy... well, nevermind.

- Prince Of Hearts : Well, it's not a big surprise, actually. It is only an
example of the bad shape the israeli scene is now. (except of the fine
work by Immortals, who save a bit of our honor )

- Protopad / BSP & CFX Team (Miki Gabel) : I am very disappointed. I won't
be able to attend Movement98 this year, and I wanted at least one more
demo party before being too busy.

- Mic / Quasars (Michael Bukchin) : It's a shame. Kinda big shame for its
organizers and the israeli scene I think we should think twice in the
future before making rush decisions they didn't fuck just themselves but
the whole il scene and guys who wanted be on this party. the whole thing
is suckxxx!

- Fulgore / GB & CFX Team (Ilya Yukelzon) : Very simple. Lack of organizing.
Not serious people. Not spending enough for organizing. And no civax
there ;)

- Erez Caiuf : It's damn bad for the demoscene. We'll have to wait till
movement!

- Spacedude (Roee Shenberg) : damn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =-<

- Shimon Shvartsbroit : Personally I was happy , because I had lots of
homework and my engine wasn't ready , and me and my group had problems
with max2 export. The organizers should set all the things for the part
before they announced it.

- DNA Groove / Moon Hunters & Embryo (Eliran Ben-Ishai) : Krembo is just
too young and a show-off. Organizing a party was just way over his
league. Or is it that organizing a party had intruded his tight
schedule of recording professional music?! :>

- Bacter (Itzik Sarel) : I think it's a shame to the Israeli scene, there
were even lots of people wanted to come compete with multichannels
and products..... I think that it is someone's responsibility & organize
at least one more party except movement98'!

Added opinion:

- Civax / Moon Hunters & CFX Team (Ohad Barzilay) : I was _deeply_
disappointed from the organizing all the way. They were not showing
any signs of being serious about it as I know how hard it is to organize
a party. With Movement we usually start the running 4 months before the
event and we keep on running and working the whole time - and we're 10
highly coordinated people! I also ordered 25 Dreams 2 CDs in thought of
selling them at the party, as well as I wanted it to be the first party
I'll be strictly an attender. I don't blame anyone personally, not even
Krembo. He lacked experience and he was totally out of focus. Next time,
when someone asks my advice on organizing parties, please guys, USE it.
At the moment, I hope this will result in more and better products for
Movement'98, as we really do our best to make it something big. And last
word about Myth - seems they picked the right name for it after all...

Mixing and Editing
by DNA-Groove / Embryo, MNH

* tracking terms in this article usually refer to the Impulse Tracker
interface.

This article will discuss the mixing and editing techniques i know of for
module tracking and sample recording/editing. I will not specify the "best"
techniques since there is no such thing. Each tracker develops his/her own
techniques which suits him/her and his/her style the best, as they track
along the years... the more the merrier.

First eye-aching editing error i see, extremely often, in trance modules,
is this channel duplication technique which usually applied on bassdrums,
bass lines and terribly low quality hi-hats. Channel duplication is by all
means a bad habit to get rid of. And for that, I'll open a whole new
subject, called "Mixing".

As you track, you sometimes find yourself under-volumed in sample output.
So most inexperienced trackers simply duplicate the entire channel, who
suffer from that volume lacking, and thus generating a mixing overdrive. A
mixing overdrive is the point where the wavetable has exceeded the limits
of the sound hardware/software. That limit applies on the wavetable height
(volume), whenever the wavetable execs that limit (by about 30-40%, it
generates static noise or simply corrupts the sample audio output (click-
click, sounds familiar?). One way to prevent that is to simply NOT
duplicate that channel, but simply edit the sample to it's maximum (or even
a bit more, 120%) normalization. That way, the sample is keeping it's own
wavetable limit and thus remaining clear and still increasing it's volume.
Try to avoid doing it with the automatic normalization the sound editing
software provides, in most cases the visual view of the wavetable should be
sufficient to determine whether the normalization is sufficient.

Most sound editing software offers automatic normalization (100%), though
it may seem to be the optimal way, it's very far from it. In some cases,
the sample wavetable is quite different from what it sounds like. Sometimes
there are unbearable "clicks" in the wavetable background (like in Bassdrum
/Hihat/Sines samples). These clicks block the maximum normalization output
thus preventing you from obtaining the maximum volume output you can gain
from your wavetable sound.

Normalization can be achieved in several ways. The most common way is the
combination of the keys, ALT-M within the Impulse Tracker SampleList Menu.
Another way is probably via the built-in sample editor in Fast Tracker.
And of course the handsome selection of sound editing tools which all
provide a wide selection of volume changing tools. All can serve the
purpose very well, though must be used cleverly in order to achieve maximum
productivity.

Echoing, is probably the first multichannel tracking technique a tracker
grasps. It is done by a copying a desired channel (usually the Lead/solo
Channel) onto another one, then the channel that was pasted is devolumed
by approximately 60%. The row decenttion is the crucial aspect of this
technique, since each number of rows effects in a different manner on the
way those channels sound like. This technique is also effected by the speed
used in tracking, since in speed 06 (125bpm), 3 spaces should create the
echoing effect of a big hall, and 2 spaces will create the effect of a
common reverb or a medium hall, if you want. :) Naturally, the amount of
spaces will grow along with the speed you use. You'll just have to
experiment in order to find out.

I mentioned channel duplication earlier as an error. It still is, though
not in all ways. There are some other ways for using channel duplication,
and the main way is usually to enrich the sound produced from a certain
sample/channel. In most cases, a similar sample is being chosen in order
to serve as a background backup sound, to add more depth and/or texture
to the original sample/channel. An example: I, personally, like to enrich
my lead channel with another background sample (like a sine, or some other
high quality/low noise sample).

That's it, I'm tired. I should be going home now, it's late (13:25). I'm
writing this in my office at my military base. :)

Electrocute

by SiK
August 6th, 1998
----------------

Robert opened his eyes. It was too dark, but something strange was
revealed to him. Two pictures were joining in his mind. In one he could
see a man sitting in the darkness, about 3 meters in front of him. The
other was completely black, but it was gradually and slowly lightening,
revealing a shelf, about 3 meters in front of him, on the wall.
Something small and round was placed on top of it.
The two sights blended with each other, flickered quickly, and Robert
couldn't decide which was true, or what was happening. A sudden burst of
familiar sights struck him, then faded quickly, before he could realize
what it was.
"Excuse me, sir? Do you know where we are?" He asked.
The man didn't seem to respond. "Perhaps he is asleep," Robert said
to himself. He turned his head around, but it was too dark to see.
His body was weak, but he decided he was getting up. He raised his
hands, put them on the arms of the chair. To his surprise, the man in
front of him copied his movements exactly.
A sense of doubt pushed his thoughts away. He nodded his head, the man
did so too. At the same time, another picture, a little blurry, blended
with what he was seeing - the shelf on the wall, in front of him, was
tilted.
"Oh... Oh my god..." He whispered.
Robert inhaled, pushed his entire body up, to a stand. A wave of
thoughts flushed his mind, as he saw himself getting up.
"This can't be..." He said. "My eye..." His hand moved instinctively
to his left eye socket. There was nothing there, just a hole. Fear was
growing inside him, he was shaking.
He saw himself approaching the shelf, sent his hand down to the
little sphere on the shelf, grabbed it in his hand, then moved it
closely to his right eye. It looked like a human eye, but it was cold,
like metal. He turned it around, brought it near his left eye socket.
Suddenly, the two pictures merged, he saw the shelf clearly, the door
right to it, the chair behind him. He walked to it and sat down.

Robert held the eye in his hand, closed. Long minutes passed by, but
he didn't know what to do with it. Small bits of memory joined together
in his head - a bar, a fight, sharp pain. Still he didn't remember
completely what happened there. All he knew was that he is in a room,
somewhere, one of his eyes was probably gauged out, and now he has an
artificial eye in his hand, that transfers sights to his mind directly.
He opened the palm of his hand. Stared at the metallic ball. A picture
of himself, looking down, was flickering in his mind. He brought the eye
closer to his left eye socket, touching the eyelids with the edge of the
ball. It was cold, made him tremble for a second. The feeling of the
unknown filled his head with fantasies, aside with fears.
He held it between his fingers for a long minute, then slowly pushed
it inside. A faint click was heard.

Robert knew that behind the door there was someone who might give him
some answers. Still, he didn't know what lied behind it, perhaps the
door is even locked. The last thought made him get up and walk to it.
As he got up from the chair, he sensed something in the room, a gas.
Suddenly, his breathing became heavy, he tripped and fell on the metal
floor. Thoughts were flashing in his head - a bar, he got into a fight,
someone punched him, he fell down, a dining table was too close, his
eye... The pain...
Then nothing.

Robert opened his eyes. It was day, the street noise below his
apartment, on the third floor, aroused a feeling of security in him. The
means that brought him to the sofa in his living room didn't concern
him.
Although his new eye didn't need to adjust to light transitions, the
feeling didn't bother him much. Still something did bother him - who
gave him the artificial eye, and WHY doesn't he know who he is.
"What if something goes wrong?" He thought. "Who do I call to ask?"
Robert knew that what lies in his head, where his old eye used to be,
is something extremely complex, and probably secret. He hasn't heard
anything about electronic organs on the media.
"The media!" He thought. "I can tell the media. Then he will contact
me about the eye! If it's so secret, he will contact me for sure!"
Somehow, the familiar feelings shrouded him again, depressed his
excitement. He sat down, lowered his eyes to the floor. He began
thinking again, how he ended up like this, no friends, in a neglected
apartment, no job or money to maintain himself. He sighed noisily,
stared at the walls, the floor.
The idea of calling the press slowly came back to him, he got up,
walked slowly to the phone, opened the yellow pages, then picked up the
receiver.

"So you see, I woke up here, on this sofa, and now my eye is some kind
of a camera. It's not a real eye."
Robert and the reporter were sitting on his sofa. She was a young
woman, didn't wear any jewelry, her face were covered with light make
up. Robert was a bit shy around her, but still he knew he had to be
confident. It was hard for him - not so often he is visited by such a
beautiful woman.
The reporter sipped from the cup, placed it on the wooden table,
crossed her legs. Ever since they sat down and he began to tell his
story, she hasn't said a word. He made so much effort convincing her on
the phone that this story was true, that she at least had to listen to
him.
After a long silence, she finally spoke. "All that is very
interesting, but do you have a proof?"
"Yes, of course. I can take it out and show you." Robert said. The
confidence in his voice was heard, it surprised him. He barely
restrained himself from smiling.
Robert got up, opened wide his eyelids with his left hand, brought his
right hand fingers to the metal eye. As soon as he touched the eye, he
felt something inside him, something warm, then hot, then burning. The
feeling spread immediately from his eye, inside, to the rest of his
body. An intense and swift electrical shock past inside him. Robert
lost control over his muscles, his body twitched, he screamed, then fell
on the floor.
"Please don't try to take out your eye, Robert, or we will have to
punish you again." Said a voice, as if it was spoken through a radio.
Robert turned his head slowly to the reporter. The look on his face
was of a frightened animal. "Did you hear that?!" He said, his voice was
filled with horror. "They are watching me!" He screamed.
The reporter stared at him, her eyes were wide open, showing the fear
she felt. She packed her things quickly, then got up, started back
walking to the door. "I... I don't think this is such a good idea.
Maybe... I should leave now." She said with a trembling voice, then ran
to the door.
Robert lowered his eyes to the floor. "They are watching me..."

The bathroom was filled with steam. It was hot, and the mirror was
covered with thin trails of water. Small pools of water were covering
the floor.
Robert stood in front of the mirror. He examined his face, his eye.
The thoughts about the incident that morning still pursued him. His
embarrassment and agony were clearly visible.
A bright shine turned his look downwards. The razor in his hand
reflected the shades of the sunset. He moved his eyes to the window. The
horizon was painted red, crossing the skies, gradually moving toward the
orange colors above his apartment building.
Robert stared at the setting sun. Tall palm trees were moving their
leaves slowly, in a rhythmic motion, flowing with the wind harmonically.
All he could see were the contour lines of the trees, filled with black
shades, set against the far mountains, where the sun was slowly
vanishing.
He stood there, still holding the blade tightly in his right hand.
Occasionally, the warm wind waved his black hair. The beautiful sight
outside only made his sadness grow inside him.
He wanted the feelings and the memories to go away. Suddenly, he
didn't want this artificial eye inside him. All this eye meant to him
was that there is someone who is watching him, his life. They can
control him, whenever they want to. If he refuses to do something, they
can simply punish him.
Just a guinea-pig, a puppet...
He realized that if he endangers the eye, they punish him. It is
probably just the prototype - they want to examine it, see how it
functions in a human body.
MY body...
That is why they can't let him take it out, damage it, or tamper with
it. He will endanger the eye, they will punish him. It's so simple.
He remembered the moment he pushed the eye inside him - he heard a
click. It means that there is another component, one that probably
connects the eye to his mind.
They are watching me...
Robert stared at the razor, clutched under his fingers. The sun had
disappeared by now, the skies were darkening. He raised his right hand,
brought the blade closer to his left eye. He balanced it horizontally,
held it in that position for a few minutes.
They are playing with me...
"PUNISH ME ALREADY! PUNISH--"
The image of himself, reflecting in the mirror, screaming at it, was
engraved in his mind. For a split of a second he lost his grip over his
body, then he collapsed on the bathroom floor. The electrical shock was
short and strong, leaving his body to quiver.
Blood was flowing from his forearm, where the razor fell and cut him.
It mixed with the small pools on the floor, soaking his clothes.
Robert closed his eyes, he waited for them to warn him, but he
couldn't hear anything, just silence... Only then he understood.

There was a peaceful silence in the living room. An artificial eye was
lying on the floor, in front of a chair.
On the chair sat Robert, his nose was bleeding. A smile that didn't
express anything was smeared on his face, his right eye was rolled up
inside his head and his eyelids were shaking rapidly. He tried to think,
about no particular thing, but he couldn't.
He felt broken, his arms and legs were thrown in an unnatural way.
From time to time his body twitched, remnants of the numerous electrical
shocks THEY have passed in him, before he managed to take the eye out.
The cold metal eyeball was pointed toward the sofa. Although it was no
longer inside Robert's head, it was still sending blurry pictures to his
mind.
"You can't electrocute me now, can you?" Robert mumbled.
He then rolled his right eye down, stared somewhere beyond the floor.
He already crossed the point, solved the problem that bothered him so
much. He knew he can't smash the eyeball - who knows what will happen to
him? But he also knew he can't put it back inside him - THEY will be
able to control him again.
There was only one thing to do.
Robert inhaled, gathered all his strength, pushed himself to a
standing position while exhaling noisily. He balanced himself for a
second, then walked to eyeball on the floor.
"There... Much better now..." He said to himself. The eye was now
pointing to the door. He walked away, stood about 2 meters in front of
the eyeball.
"They are watching me..." He thought.
Robert pulled his hand out of his pocket, something silver and shiny
was in his right hand.
"I hope you're watching..." He whispered. An innocent smile appeared
on his face.
Robert pressed the object to his right temple. He felt the cold metal,
soothing in a way. He moistened his lips, closed his right eye, then
squeezed his right hand.
A quiet and swift sound was heard. Robert fell on the floor, blood
flowing from his head. A silver handgun landed next to his body, the
long tube on the barrel made a sharp noise, as it hit the floor.

There was a peaceful silence in the living room. An artificial eye was
lying on the floor, in front of a dead body.
The picture it showed was a bit dark, lifeless. Probably another
problem needed to be fixed. After all, it was a only a prototype.
The big screen in the conference room shut off. There was nothing more
to see. The experiment failed, again. This was a loss of millions of
dollars to the company.
A man in a business suit turned his chair from the screen. He sighed,
put both of his hands on the wooden table, stared at a paper that lied
in front of him.
"Bring in the next subject - Andrew."

Civax Choices
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ
Pain 08/98 - This issue is a MAJOR change as they have a new
design. It no longer gots the cute little ansi
interface (though they kept the layout) - it is now
a VESA 2 supported Dmag interface. Cool articles,
Cool Layout. (I liked it better when it was ansi,
but they had to grow up sometime...) :)
[PAIN0898.ZIP (522k) Text: Mags]

Ketchup Killers - A Norton Commander clone only looks better, faster
Commander and with lots more option. It supports 190 file
(by Ketchup killers) formats including music and HTML.
[KKC120.ZIP (397k) Gen: General Utils]

Project X sources - All sources and exe files of one of the greatest
(by Pope-X) RemotAccess doors coders. Full pascal sources. It's
a must for every RA sysop and every RA coder.
[PROJECTX.ZIP (1,835k) Code: Communication]

Gateways - Winner of Assembly'98 democompo. Trauma did a great
(by Trauma) demo and it's well deserve it's place. It got some
nice looking scenes and some new effects (not many
of those, though). The demo runs on almost all
machines and with most configurations, which already
worth allot. Go ahead, you cannot afford to miss it. :)
[GATEWAYS.ZIP (3,655k) Parties: Asm98: Demo]

Anette - I don't usually write about pictures or graphics in
(by Ward/Astroidea) this section (mainly since I can't go over all the
graphics reaching the BBS) but this pic is great.
I've setted up as my wallpaper. It's far better then
the picture that won 1st place, probably a screw up
in the Assembly'98 graphics compo. Got 2nd place.
[ANETTE_B.ZIP (643k) Parties: Asm98: Graphics]

Protopad Choices
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

Lizardking - Well, it's about time! Lizardking is one of the
CFX file area scene's most veteran trackers. He has been making
tracks for years, on the Amiga and the C64. In 1994
he joined Triton, and wrote some of the music for
the incredible Crystal Dreams II. He is an excellent
tracker, and can use the limited .MOD format as only
a native Amiga tracker can.

Mesha - This 4kb intro rightfully won Assembly'98. Picard is
(by Picard / Rhyme) pushing the envelope regarding 3D in 4K intros: 7
totally different scenes, 8 textures, real keyframing
(although linear), gouraud and texture, environment
mapping, meaningful scenes. This is an amazing 3D 4K
intro, one of the best ever made, along with Magic
Carpet 4KB and Omniscent.
[MESHA_BY.ZIP (12k) ASM98: 4kb intros]
