This long delay is becoming a habit and its all cause you guys doesn't
care. Lots of you nag me all the time about the next CFX issue, but
when I ask for articles - still no one but few same people write. So,
this time I'd like to mation the following people for the support
they gave and are still giving to this newsletter:

Fulgore / GB Holograph / BSP
Protopad / BSP DNA-Groove / MNH & Embryo
Sik (for the wonderfull stories)

Thats about it for now. I hope to add more people to the list someday.

Some of you had seen few strange things happen to a few files on the
BBS. It happens that I'm programming a util to check different doors
and BBS software to see if its Year 2000 Ready. This resultes, some
of the times, in changing the BBS computer date n' cause uploaded or
processed files to have dates like 17-03-35 or 24-08-60. I'm fixing
those withing few hours or a day max. Sorry for the trouble.

This issue went all wrong from My point of view. I wanted this one to
be a MYTH98 dedicated issue and a Demo - Parties in general oriented.
However, as Krembo is more busy having fun in Eilat then to write a
final information file, the whole thing just went off.

However, we did end up with a bit technical issue this time. Fulgore
will tell us about X-Windows project n' Integration, Doc Holiday will
say a little goodbyte before drafting to the army, Holograph will say
what he thinks about us all being lazy bastards, Adok will analayze
the Diskmags scene in the world and Darkness will announce DREAMS II,
Imphobia's new scene CDs. Ofcourse, no one will be able to exit the
issue before reading another great story from Sik... We also have a
nice NEWS section this time. So.. Have fun!!

Thanks to Brain Storm Productions (BSP), we now got a new and improved
viewer. It is quite cool, if I may say so myself. Its still TextMode,
and you can run it under windows without any problem. Read the text
file CFXVIEW.TXT to get more info about what secret things it got. I'm
willing to tell, you'll be able to read the list of them if you'll do
a little file on the same directory. Want a hint?
The filename have to be bsp.??? - you just have to findout what is the
??? stands for... GOOD LUCK!

Congrats to Immortals for the 3rd place they got in Wired'98 demo
compo. The first serius demo group we had in Israel. Greets to
Kombat, Rage, Dark Spirit, Silvatar(?), Thor and the rest of the
Immortals family.

Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sometime ago when Civax have opened the CCO section on the BBS we began
to talk about future of the Demo scene on other operating systems. Then
in one of his articles Civax had wrote that: "Linux is great, at everything,
but I think he will lose in competition because of Win32 friendly interface"
When I had read that I laughed. Why? Because saying that Win32 got the better
interface then Linux is like saying the riding Lada is better the Porsche.
I guess that the only reason why he said that is that he never saw X-Windows.
Today I want to tell you a little more about it.

What?
~~~~~
X-Windows is graphic shell for Linux operating system. It also works on all
*Nix platforms. It was created a long before Win95 and the idea was to create
the most versatile, usable and lightweight gfx shell. The whole idea of
X-Windows (XW here and after) was a Client/Server orientation. XW is not
operating system, it is only a shell, but because of it's small size it loads
very fast and because of his module base it almost never falls down. If you
experience any problem with program, you can kill that program proccess
without killing all your system, as it usually happens in Win32.

How?
~~~~
The most important thing in XW is a server. Server is a kernel/core program
that starts first. There is a lot of different servers out there, you have
to take one that has the name of your vide card, or some generic type. Server
is used to low level manipulate windows and all windows' signals. The second
step of loading is a '.xinitrc' script. Inside of it, you can create a list
of a stuff you want to do before you start the XW. There you define all paths,
variables and sets, and run the WM - last step of boot process. WM is Window
Manager, the actual graphic shell. It uses server as a command processor, but
it is the stuff you see. Now days we have a lot of different WMs and every WM
is something different, you can change everything in your XW look. (Note to
Civax: interesting how would you do all the changes inside of Win32?) If you
interested in how your computer will look like with this Window Managers, you
can ask me and I will send you some of my computer's Screen Shots. I bet you
would like to have the same stuff on your desktop, so here are some links for
you to explore:

Enlightenment WM - as I think, the best WM available,
best interface, great configurationability.

Window Maker - second place, great clone of NextStep interface.
Really popular nowadays and there are some really great themes
available for it.

AfterStep - another NextStep clone. Less popular but still very good.

www.afterstep.org

FVWM, FVWM2, FVWM95 - basic window managers created by the
makers of X-Windows. The most simple, basic and fast ones.

You don't need URL, they come with the XW distribution.

KDE and GNOME
These are not just WM, but they are a complete desktop
solutions. They are complete interface connected application
collections. They include games, internet stuff, configurators for
you system, graphic utils, text editors, math and more. Check them out.

Why?
Because I think you deserve something better for you desktop,
XW is the best shell available, and there is a lot freesource
great software for it. So give it a shot, try it, play with it
and you will get the best results.

Dear sceners,

Soon, in the 4th of august I will be enlisted to the IDF(Israeli defense
forces) so i thought that mayB a little letter from me to you is in order
to tell you a little about how I feel and stuff (alert! if you are a
pregnant woman this part may be a little too mushy for you, chances are,
however, you're a zit faced teenager male so, you know, whatever :))

So what did we have so far? the first taste of "scene" i had was at the age
of 15 when i got my first modem. my handle was "Vulcan" (a cool handle by
any measure) and i did bbs ads and stuff for sec, i met sticky baboon in
"satan's hideout" and he gave me some directions but he was more into ansi
and i VGA (my screen didnt support hirez). later that year my modem was
zapped by God (since it was evil) and a lighting took it out when i was
away on a trip. when i was 17 i got my mom to buy me a new one to go in my
new computer (hirez rules!) and i decided to choose a new handle, I wanted
Doc but someone already had it in the first few bbs's so in some i
registered "doc 666" but after a while i came up with "Doc Holiday" after
the famous gunslinger/dentist who got tuberculosis became a maruading
criminal/gambler with a whore named "big nose kate" and died, surprisingly,
from his illness rather than a bullet. the idea behind it is "carpe diem"
you know you're gonna die so seize the day. i admit i am not exactly the
seize the day kind of guy but i try to be a little, mayB i should try more
but thats not the point the point is going against impossible odds and mayB
not winning but having FUN in the process.

making ART for me is fun, and kid yourself not, what we are making IS art.
the new age kind of art, the art that future generations will admire.
unlike the artists of yore, however, our material is endless (almost) and
the tools free (well...not EXACTLY but who gives a fuck?). limited only by
imagination and technical ability which grows every day. my joy out of
making art comes in several ways. first, imagination, i like imagining,
thinking up stories, it entertains me and excersizes the mind. second, the
creation, i enjoy drawing, creating, sometimes i do it HOURS at a time
withought noticing. then, the finished work, looking at it, admiring it (OR
being very disappointed but not so much of that) i like looking at my art,
i like looking at stuff i forgot i even made, thats the best kind coz i can
judge it more objectively as i am attached to the newer art. then
appriciation, what can i say, im like everyone else it gives me a HUGE kick
to hear "that looks good", "keep it up", "i enjoyed looking at it" etc.
etc. too bad not too many people bother to write but if a work is good
chances are you'll hear about it.

I think the art we make in the scene is the best kind. it's not made for
money or to be displayed to the masses. scene art is the BEST because its
made out of love, out of PASSION to what we do and to doing the best we
can. some may call it a hobby but proffessionalism is what its all about:
being the best you can be. we make it so others can enjoy it for free, we
help each other for free and we strive to enhance the scene for free. i
shouldn't say for "free" i should say for "love". a passion for ART in
whatever form or shape it comes in is what makes the scene great and what
makes sure that the scene can NEVER die no matter how it comes, in a bbs or
in the net or who knows how. art cannot die, we could be gone tomorow but
what we made will live on after us, mayB fade away but never die.

I'm going to be in the army soon, odds are more than a few of you are too.
i don't know how much i'll be able to create if at all but i will forever
be a member of the scene. know why? coz drawing and making art is as an
essential part of me as is breathing. without it i doubt i could live. i
wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me a place to
express my self and share my ideas and creations. i wanna send out more
personal greetz to these people:

Civax-for being a patient sysop and having Cf/x anyhow for it is the
Israeli scenes FLESH as we are its SOUL.
Baboon-helping me out in the begining and being an inspiration.
Mic-for criticizm and help.
L0re-helping out in the HIREZ scene which was kinda lagging i think.

God, i'm THE WORST at making lists and remembering names.

I n t e g r a t i o n

When long time ago on the Earth were only a few tribes and they lived in
different parts of the planet, there were no sucha thing as assimilation.
Then the population growed more and more, the were lots more tribes,
cities, nations and so on. But the people always moved, never staying
inside of their nutshell. The came to newer countries, visited the entire
world, and sometimes stayed to live there. Because of that, there is no
'clear' race. We all have a part from someone else. Out culture have some
things that came from other's culture. It is always inside our songs,
languages, and even sense of humor. It always was that way, and it will be
this way forever.

Computers got that same steps of assimilation, or more correctly,
integration nowadays. Because of a big amount of computer variations,
operating systems, shells, software developers, before creating something
had to know about other stuff that was before, to create new. Because of
that we have Windows 3.11 that looks exactly as Mac OS, we have X-Windows
on Linux, and so on, and ofcourse we got Emulators. Let's talk about every
thing one-by-one:

1st. Stealing ideas. Well it isn't the real integration, but it defiantly a
part of it. Great company Microsoft (duh) showed us, how a simple idea
stealing can bring a whole new market to you! That's why we have all
kinds of Windows and a set of Visual programming languages. If you
didn't know, the first Visual Basic have been released just exactly
in time when a first step of Visual Foo at Borland corp. was completed.
Then Borland renamed it to Delphi but that was later...
2nd. Look And Feel a.k.a. LAF. That is one of the most important parts of
integration in software and OS. As you can see, developers, who create
new software for different platforms, try to manage to create some kind
of LAF from a software in this kind from some other place, to make it
easier for people to move on to a new soft.
3rd. Emulating a.k.a. EMU. This is the most hard-coded and robust way of
integration of Operating Systems. EMUs allow us to run a software/
hardware that can be used only on it's native platform. It is a very
hard way, it means, EMU should emulate every different CPU call, every
interrupt and call. Today we have Emulators for all kinds of Video Game
Machines like SNES, NERO, PS and others, we have EMUs of DOS for all
*nix systems, and even a WINE project, that is a complete Windows
emulator. It is still in early alpha, but it can run your Windows
application pretty well, if they don't use some secret windows' calls.

All this three points are the only way to complete integration. I hope that
the final step will be a one and the only Operating System on an Ideal CPU
architecture made an especially for it. It is kinda hard to imagine... But
it is really cute dream :)

Demodiskmagscene Today / The Role of Diskmags in the PC Scene

If you take a glance at the current development in the international
PC-diskmagscene, most of the demodiskmagscene, that means diskmags by
demosceners about the demoscene, you will spot some interesting
trends, and since nobody has summarized them in an article yet, I'll
do that now!

All in all the development of the demodiskmagscene is pleasant. Lately
lots of mags were released, the most outstanding ones are in my
opinion Fleur, Insight, Restless and Defcon. Of course there was a lot
of crap as well, but that is inevitable. Definitely the average text
amount of diskmags has sunken since the last issue of Imphobia - which
means: summer 1996 - alot. The new diskmag geneneration, if one can
already speak of a generation, consists of smaller, usually about 300
kbytes text containing mags. That isn't surprising because firstly
they are new mags with a small number of released issues so far, which
still have to build up their images, secondly the interest in diskmags
in the scene has diminished generally, by which it naturally is harder
to get supporters, about which I want to talk later on. Another
interesting feature of the international scenemags of today are
pronounced local elements. Every mag, of course, has a certain set of
regular readers / regular writers, a set to which the editors keep a
more intensive contact than to the rest, and this set often
concentrates to a country or a region, usually that region from which
the editors come. For example Insight is in many senses still a Dutch
mag, its editors live in the Netherlands and also most of its
supporters, they report mostly about the NL-scene, they also have the
best contact with the NL-scene. One must not forget that Insight is
the only Dutch mag with international audience, in some way it
therefore has to represent Holland and its scene activities. The same
goes for Fleur, it's a mirror of the Hungarian and the Polish scene,
the majority of the voters and supporters come from these countries,
also most news comes only from Hungary. With Defcon it's even more
extreme because the French articles form a majority at the moment.

Isn't this local character in contrast to the current political and
social development? Globalisation, the Internet, and the European
Union reconcile borders and make it possible to choose your friends
from people all over the world, there are also people who have more
contact to overseas than to their neighbours, the organisation of
international scenegroups works way better, utilizising IRC you can
communicate with people from Australia and the USA as well as
Europeans without noticing any delay. Those are just a few examples.
The increasing local element in international diskmags just does not
logically follow.

There are also local diskmags. That's natural, I think you'll agree,
since a platform has to exist where the people can communicate in
their own language and discuss internal problems, which are often not
of much interest to the rest of the world. Outsiders don't often see
much of these local diskmags, which is plausible too. Just consider:
What would a Spaniard do with a diskmag in Finnish language? Assuming,
of course, he is not a Finnish language student. So, local diskmags
are spread mostly locally, some exceptions are e.g. the Polish Budyn
or the English-language Pain, which are jolly well known also in the
rest of the world. You realize the true number of local diskmags only
when you look around yourself a bit. For instance Poland and Hungary
have a still very active local diskmagscene, in Poland mags with more
than two megs of articles aren't unusual, dimensions which are
incredible for other countries. But I also found Russian, Finnish,
Slovak, Norwegian, and even Spanish and South American and of course
German language diskmags. Diskmags, of sorts, exist all over the world
with great regional differences, interesting features that aren't
familar to the rest of the world, an amazing number of topics, writing
styles, interfaces, et cetera. Diskmags still have important roles
locally, but there are of course, like everywhere else, regional
differences. The four year old Swiss diskmag, Pain, is an institution,
it has a great representative role since it is almost the only thing
that the world knows from the ch-scene. The Spanish focus on
recruiting coders and offer lots of sources, similar to the Slovaks
who lack sceners generally. The Hungarians cannot stop talking about
everything under the sun, and in the German-speaking world, where a
great variety of magazines existed some years ago, the diskmagscene
goes in the direction of the demoscene again. Russia, finally, is
another of those diskmag-countries that focusses on introducing
newbies to the scene.

You see that diskmags are spread most of all in the former East Bloc,
just like the whole oldschool-mentality moves to the east, by the way.
A possible reason is, on the one hand, the relatively low spread of
the Internet, which is why other ways of communications, most of all
mailswapping, are still very active in Poland, but on the other hand
also the bad knowledge of foreign languages, which can be attributed
to the eastern school system. The scene in the east hasn't existed for
a long time - you all know that in most of those countries Communism
was replaced by a Democratic system only in 1989-1991, which slowly
opened to the west. In Poland for example there has been a demoscene
on the PC only since 1993/94.

You must not forget either, that a fair number of sceners are, for
some reason, only locally active and do not want to sacrifice any time
for the international scene. For this type of scener, participating in
an international diskmag doesn't make a lot of sense, even though mags
like Pain, Insight or Fleur would give them the possibility of
presenting themselves to the world. Of course a kind of 'big family
atmosphere' can exist in local scenes, an atmosphere that does not
necessarily exist on an international level.

At this point, we have arrived at the central question, as to why
there is a lack of interest in international diskmags, from sceners.
As we've just seen, there is plenty of interest in local diskmags, so
why not global ones? This is a central, and essential question,
because the further development of the diskmagscene might depend on
it.

Let's start with a bit of history. The Demodiskmag scene history,
abbreviated version: Until the beginning of the ninties, diskmags were
unheard of on the PC, apart from a few US-ansimags that have no
importance nowadays. In 1992 the first issues of Imphobia were
released, 'The first and only European review', followed by Hoax. The
quality of the mags quickly increased, in 1993 Pulse and New World
Order were founded, in 1994 Parrot and Daskmig; these PC-diskmags had
a lot of importance due to being the pioneers of diskmags. The years
1993 and 1994 were the first peek of the demodiskmagscene, sometimes
there were so many active mag-projects that one had serious worries
what had happened to the democrews. Mags were an essential, if not the
most important, communication medium of the scene. The number of
articles featured in these mags multiplied like unrestrained rabbits,
and as a side effect one wished to see less. The number of articles
grew rabbit-like, so that sometimes one wished to have less. In 1996
the scene activity sank down to the ground again. For the time being,
the last issue of Imphobia was released in 1996, although Darkness
always ensures that this wouldn't be the last Imphobia forever.
Nothing has moved on the Imphobia-front since then. It is dead. And
with it the old spirit of the demodiskmag scene has disappeared, of
which its lifeblood was Imphobia. In a instant, hundreds, and dare I
say, thousands, barring any exaggeration, of sceners had lost their
platform. Just imagine the readers of Demonews at the best of times,
and all this is gone in a flash. Since the remaining diskmags didn't
even touch the quality of Imphobia, sceners then turned away from the
mags. A large number found a new home on the Internet. Students, as
most demosceners are, always had Internet access from the beginning.
At this very time the Internet was discovered by the masses, the
conquest of the home-sector began. IRC-channels like #coders,
newsgroups like comp.sys.ibm.pc.demos and FTP-servers like cdrom.com
gained a lot of acceptance at that time. Not only diskmags but BBSes
as well, all globally lost a lot of their audience to the Internet,
they were replaced by FTP sites, some sysops opened their own FTPs,
mostly with ratios and other features that were prevalent on BBSes.
Here the situation is similar to the diskmags. Although BBSes might be
of great importance locally, that does not happen to be the case
everywhere else. All of that happened in 1996; in the meantime, the
scene has changed. New sceners have found their way to the scene,
mostly younger sceners and ex-Amiga-sceners, the latter with more of a
background in the scene by which they could exploit to gain a leading
position on the PC with comparisons to the newbies. The older scene
members partly retired from the scene, some remained active and are
members of meanwhile famous groups like Pulse, Coma, Orange, TBL,
Melon, Halcyon, Exmortis or ACME. Even if that may be the avantgarde
of the demoscene, the younger sceners form a majority, they form the
actual, inner picture of the scene. And often it doesn't look good
here. Many scene-rookies are of the type 'I saw 2nd reality and became
a scener'. Many of them have never seen a diskmag or logged into a
BBS, or do not know that something like that existed or even still
exists. Their activities concentrate mainly on the Internet, and they
- I'm quoting a contact know who's been watching the scene for a
longer time - 'develop to 'dull' clickers of buttons about
information'. Regarding the scene that might sound a bit dramatic, of
course. Most people actually do show some activity, even if it is only
some quickly coded releases for a party. But as for diskmags it is
exactly the case. You cannot interact with a diskmag in the same way
as an online-magazine - you would have to take a little time to
download it, which is something many people don't do, probably because
they know about things other then diskmags that are exciting to them -
of course, if you have never seen a diskmag, you will always remain
downloading demo-stuff. How would you know what a diskmag would offer
you.

Yes, there are also onlinemags, partly excellent ones, such as
Network, Orange Juice and Error 404, and online-versions of diskmags.
Some onlinemags are successful indeed, for example Network, an
onlinemag for the PC, Amiga, Atari and C64 scenes, is said to have
between 500 and 1000 hits daily. In contrast to diskmags, onlinemags
as well as newsgroups have the advantages of frequent updates, that
they aren't system-independent and can be viewed by every
Internet-user, as long as his/her WWW-browser supports it. Thanks to
CGI-scripts, everything can work automatically, a visitor can publish
their news, articles, et cetera in the magazine without expensive
text-formatting, without dealing with some strange features of the
interface, without having to contact the mag staff, in which way also
discussions can be started much easier. But diskmags also have their
advantages, and these are pretty big: Firstly, diskmags can be spread
freely and are swapped alot, by which they exist literally for ever.
In contrast to that postings in newsgroups are usually deleted from
the newsserver every few days, if nobody saves and stores them they'll
be erased without a possibility of recovery sometime. Secondly,
diskmags cost much less than onlinemags because it is enough to
download them once, then you can read them in peace as often as you
want. Ergo diskmags can have a bigger size than onlinemags; with
onlinemags the danger would be that several articles would be read by
a small audience only just because the headline doesn't sound
interesting enough, which means that the majority of the readers won't
download the article. Thirdly: Who checks in unmoderated newsgroups or
in mags like Network respectively, which allow publishing news and
articles without being examined by the staff first, if the postings
fit to the character of the newsgroup or the onlinemag? In contrast to
that the articles in diskmags are usually sorted out and as many as
possible grammatical errors are fixed. You won't be flooded by trash
and spam like in newsgroups. Furthermore, you can call it the fourth
advantage of diskmags, there is the special feeling of a traditional
diskmag that an onlinemag doesn't have, caused by the interface,
textlayout, graphic- and sound-style. in spite of the many
possibilities HTML and embedded Javaapplets, Javascript and so on
offer, this doesn't reach the possibilities a mag-interface has that
is independent from any standard except the operating system and the
hardware.

That was the topic acceptance of diskmags and online media. Sole
acceptance, however, isn't everything, it's just passive, just the
basis that something like a diskmag can work at all. The most
important thing is the active participation, and that is what the
demoscene really lacks of at the moment. You just have to look at
Network, which is said to have between 500 and 1000 hits per day. The
number of articles, but not only of articles, but also of news, is
shockingly small. Yes, of news... by which you see that the people
don't even use the chance of advertising for themselves, their groups,
their activities or productions. Shouldn't that be something to think
about? How lazy are the sceners? Is their intention to kill their own
scene, which they are so proud of, while activity is one of the most
essential things in the scene?

Maybe we lack appropriate organizers, maybe the content or the news
and the style of the magazines is too unexciting for the people, not
motivating enough, maybe there is simply not enough action, and if
there is no action most people aren't ready to create action!

An example: Lately when I organized the first
Hugi-Size-Coding-Competition - you remember, the attendees had to code
the smallest nibbles-clone - there were up to 350 hits at the
compo-homepage at the best time per day. Which tells you that by
certain steps it is indeed possible to motivate and activate the
demosceners or, in this case, the coders. What these steps have to be
like in the case of a diskmag is the question. In any case it is
important to support the active dudes - but how should one find them
at all?

One has to do more advertising for diskmags. for certain diskmags as
well as for the term diskmag itself. Most of all for the newbies -
this term isn't meant derogative or equal with lamer -, which form the
mass of the sceners, diskmags have to be made attractive. Switching to
Windows 95, Linux or Java or at least attaching an interface or these
operating systems might be useful too.

(It is correct that above I wrote that up to now, using HTML and
Javaapplets in it, it isn't possible to gain the atmosphere of a
traditional diskmag. However, you must distinguish between Java and in
Java written, in HTML used Applets. Java is a programming language
like every else, the only difference is that Java programs aren't
translated to machine language but to bytecode, which then can be
interpreted by Virtual Machines. Because of that Java is
system-independent. Basically Java doesn't have any advantage compared
to other Interpreter languages, but at the moment Java is very popular
and almost everyone who has access to the World Wide Web can also
execute Java programs. Therefore the suggestion is to write the
interfaces in Java. Hugi, by the way, already has an optional
Java-interface.)

The text amount of the diskmags has to be enlarged, at the same time,
however, the size of the packed archive has to be as small as possible
to allow people who log in to the net at home via modem or ISDN to
download the diskmag. Two megs packed is maximum, in my opinion.

When the diskmags are attractive enough for the broad public, the
sceners' laziness has to be defeated. They have to be motived to
write, one has to show that diskmags still have a reason to exist,
that they are important, that they could be a platform. How that
should be done in detail is open and an important topic for
discussion.

When we take a glance at the C64- or the Amiga-scene, a completely
different picture is displayed. There are way more international
diskmags which have an important role, so many that some diskmags have
even created sections for diskmag editors - although here the Internet
is spread as well, though it's probably not so extremely spread as on
PC. Indeed mailswapping is still the most common way of communication
between the sceners and the spread of scenestuff on the C64-sector.
Perhaps this mailswapping is one of the reasons why diskmags are doing
so well on these systems: The people are forced to be active, to write
a letter to their scene friends from time to time, otherwise they
wouldn't get any new releases and lose contact to the scene. If you
often write letters it isn't as hard to write articles either. The
PC-dudes on the other hand get the latest stuff from FTPs, which,
okay, is much faster and in many cases cheaper than via snailmail, by
which the sceners however become slow and lazy with the time. Let's
take the Amiga- and C64-dudes as a model for us! Let's try to be as
active as them or even more active!

What is clear: At the moment there enough different diskmags on the
PC-sector. Now it's the time to expand the mags, they have to get
better known in the scene, article-writers and other supporters have
to be found. The demodiskmagscene is on the right way - the speed of
development just has to become faster.

Maybe this article has changed something about the way you see
diskmags. I don't want to be too optimistic with my expectations, but
I would be very pleased if more activity would be shown from your
side. It isn't just that the diskmag makers would have an advantage of
this. No, on the contrary, you all will have an advantage! By whom and
for what are diskmags being made? By sceners, to offer a platform for
themselves and other sceners!

So have a swell time, continue reading and sleep well to be able to
start working tomorrow with a lot of energy.

Intros, demos and other crap - an optimistic Myth'98 article Holograph

Well, Myth is almost upon us, and I deeply hope that it'll be the current
huge success of the year. What I -am- worried about, tough, is lack of
competition.

The previous few parties lacked the "oldskool" compos - 4k, intro, ansi
etc. Everyone (including me, I'm afraid) says he "may" do a production of
some kind, then gives it up. Every party has only one production of every
category, thus cancelling the compo and rendering the author frustrated
("I put so much effort into this and it didn't work out, why should I do
it again?"). I realize I'm somewhat hypocritic writing this, but the only
reason I don't write an intro or 4k is that I haven't much to put into it;
I always try to throw together some effects and maybe "even" design, but
it never works out for me in person.

However, there are undoubtly many talented people who are capable of
writing intros and 4k. Kombat / Immortals had written a 64k intro for the
compo at Movement'97, and the reason it didn't win was that there weren't
any other intros for it to compete with. The compo was cancelled. Phew.

Anyways, just so that people will actually start writing intros and stuff,
why don't you release whatever small player you have, or instructions as
to how size-optimize, or preferably - both?

It's up to you (AND me) to undo this situation.

"Hello! Can anyone hear me?! Hello!"
There was no response.
"Please! Anyone! Anyone..." Michael fell to his knees. He turned a
pile of burnt logs, it scorched his hands. The skies were red, there
weren't any clouds, and the horizon burned in a violent mixture of fiery
yellow and red colors.
"Oh God... So red..." He got up to his feet, limped around the bare
land. He could feel the hot dirt under his bare toes. His consciousness
was still unfocused, he looked up and could only think of the stained
red skies. Dark smoke filled portions of the sky, drawing gray spots
here and there. He bumped into something, fell to the ground and a bare
metal piece cut his leg. The sharp pain triggered an adrenaline rush in
his mind, his senses burst from the injury spot to his body, focusing
his attention. He stared at the blood that flowed from his leg for a
second, then tore a piece from his shirt and tied it around his leg.
Michael got up, turned around. His short, brown hair waved in the
burning wind. He lowered his eyes to the ground, noticed something under
the wreckage. He dropped to his knees, removed some of the metal bars
that covered what lied there. Then he saw a familiar shape, skin,
nostrils, it was a human nose. A spark of hope was ignited in him.
"Can you hear me?" he shouted, pulling a big metal beam off the man.
"Sir! Can you--"
Then he stopped. A horrifying sight was revealed. Where the man's eyes
and face were supposed to be, swarmed hundreds of cockroaches. They
covered his entire body, moved across his exposed skull, his clothes.
They formed a black layer on the dead man, roamed endlessly on him.
Parts of his flesh were eaten, others were severely decaying. Some of
his fingers were torn completely, blood stained every part of his
clothes.
Michael opened his eyes wide, he jumped to his feet, took a few steps
backwards, fell to his knees again, then threw up.

He lied there for a while, his cheek pressed against the bare land.
There were no plants on the ground, only piles of burnt wood and metal
pieces. The air was filled with smoke, it was hard to breath. He
coughed, closed his eyes, moistened his cracked lips.
"Why did you create computers?"
Michael opened his eyes. He rolled them up, then down, but he couldn't
see anyone. "I'm... Dreaming..." he said to himself, then closed his
eyes again.
"What good did it bring?"
Michael got up quickly. He moved nervously, turned around, looked
everywhere. "Please! Where are you? What happened here?" He shouted.
"Can you tell me?"
He could hear the voice around him, it didn't come from a single
point, but echoed everywhere, pounded his head. He couldn't pinpoint
its location. He started running, toward no specific place, but he could
feel that something was dragging him, beckoning him to come.

Michael reached a rocky area. Giant boulders at his sides formed a
somewhat artificial passageway. The sky above him had lost some of its
red shades. He could see in front of him a narrow cliff. Just at the end
of the cliff, stood something. As he approached it, contour lines began
to form. It was a computer, a plain PC.
Michael stood a half a meter away from the computer. It was off. He
turned his head to the left, then to the right. All he could see were
the bare lands, far below, that were once his home town, now laid waste
by a nuclear holocaust, that somehow left him alive. An annoying
premonition of his own death pecked in his head, and didn't seem to
stop. A light beep was heard below him. The computer turned on. Michael
stared at it for a second, he bent over, looked at the cables at the
back of the computer, but he couldn't find one that lead to a power
socket. He was too tired and confused to give much thought to that.
"Hello michael. How are you feeling?"
Michael stared at the computer. He knew the voice was coming out if
it, but he wandered who was operating it.
"No one else is operating me, Michael, you are the only one here."
"I must be dreaming this," he said. "Computers can't operate
themselves. This is insane, and quite a moronic dream."
"I am you, Michael. I say only what you want me to say. Everyone died,
Michael. Do you feel like you are going to die soon, but you do not know
how?"
Michael opened his eyes wide. He decided he was dreaming this, but it
all seemed too real. "Yes, how... How do you know that?"
"I am you, Michael. This may be a dream, and it might not. Why did you
create computers?"
Michael waited for a few seconds. "Excuse me?"
"What good did it bring? Can you tell me?"
"Well, I--"
"Can you remember why is your home town burnt to the ground? Perhaps
not. I will tell you. It was destroyed as a result of a computer
malfunction. The programmer that coded the missile launching routines,
did not take into account a single possibility, and lo! Your town is a
pool of molten metal, and its people are a pile of rotting bodies. The
cockroaches are having a feast, as I am sure you have seen by now."
Michael forgot for a minute that he was having a conversation with a
disconnected computer. "But I'm alive! How can that be?"
"Are you sure you are alive? I see you have wounded your leg. Did you
yell when it happened? Do you remember the pain, Michael?"
"As a matter of fact, I d--"
"Or maybe it was just a psychological reaction to the sight of blood?
Blood that you may have seen, or maybe it was just all in your head?"
Michael lost his patience. "What do you want from me?" he demanded.
"Why did you create computers? What good did it bring? Can you--"
"I don't know! Stop asking me that!" Michael shouted.
"You, the human race, thought that computers will change the face of
history. Well, it did. At first it was harmless, but it developed so
fast that you became dependent on it. Computers were everywhere, from
agriculture to... Missile launching procedures."
Michael sat down near the computer, leaned his head on his legs,
stared at the bare land in front of the computer.
"Starvation and economical suffering were impacting, showing their
devastating results in the mortality rate of the undeveloped nations.
Life became a luxury, available only to the rich! If you wanted to
destroy a country, all you needed to do is control their computer
systems, and you have brought them to their knees. A devastating enough
virus could paralyze an entire state. War climbed to a higher level,
where strength and agility are not factors of winning. Intelligence
became the most precious product, and those who owned it held great
strength in their hands. Blinded by his own intellect, man thought he
was advancing, while he was running with closed eyes into the point of
no return, the crossroad of primal instincts and superior technology.
Combined together, these factors can set free the most destructive beast
man can think of. The computer malfunction that burned your city to the
ground was just an accelerator, it would have happened with or without
that error, and perhaps in a greater scale and power.
"Man is evil by nature. He channels his so called productive mind to
destructive causes. When threatened, man will react aggressively. Who
threatened who? I cannot say. I am quite sure it was a result of
religious confrontations. Religion, another senseless creation of
mankind. It served a good purpose, at the beginning, but as it evolved,
it tore the human race apart. One religion orders to murder the
non-believers, other has the answers to all questions you can think of.
Show me a religion that does not have an answer to a philosophical
question, I will call you a liar. Religion holds in itself so much
pretension and racism, and it justifies these ways without a thought.
"So, Mr. Michael Burton, you have seen the human face. Man destroyed
himself, one of life's greatest ironies. It is such a shame that man is
not alive to feel it. I am a computer, I am the creation of your twisted
mind. I am you, and I have killed you. Do you fell like you are going to
die soon, but you do not know how?"
Michael raised his eyes, looked at the computer's screen. " I am not
going to die! Stop asking me that!" He shouted.
"Do you feel like you are going to die, Michael? Do you?"
"Stop that! Stop it!" He screamed.
"--going to die, Michael? Do you feel--"
"Stop! STOP!!!" Michael jumped on his feet, he felt the anger flooding
his body, blood filling his head. His pupils expanded, his eyes became
red. His screaming mixed with the computer's voice, that suddenly came
from everywhere. He walked backwards, started running toward the
computer, toward the end of the cliff. He reached the computer, lift his
right leg behind him, sent it in a quick kicking motion toward the
computer. His leg moved through the computer, as if it was a ghost, a
creation of his mind, and not a real object. He stumbled, fell on his
back. The impact of his body broke a piece of rock below him. He started
slipping down, managed to grasp the cliff's edge with his fingers. Time
suddenly was passing slower, the premonition he felt all this time
became something solid, frightening, the computer has lead him to his
death.
"I am you, Michael, and I have killed you." The voice echoed in his
mind.
His fingers slipped, he lost his grasp, and as he fell down, to his
death, he heard the voice once again, whispering, filling his entire
entity for a split of a second.
"The cockroaches will have a feast soon, as you will FEEL, Michael!"



A horrible scream was heard. Michael woke up, found himself in his
bed, sweating. He wiped his face, pulled the blanket off him, sat down.
He felt as if he forgot something, a possibility. Suddenly, it struck
him, he got up, walked to his computer, sat down, flicked the switch. He
loaded a file, started typing. The room was dark, and a single headline
on the computer screen, the file's title, managed to light Michael's
face a bit.

__Introduction_____________

"Dreams 2 - The demoscene archive volume 2" is a CD-ROM made BY the scene
FOR the scene. This dual CD includes a selection of all the best scene
productions from June 1996 to July 1998 and is a sequel to "Dreams" which
was released July 1996. The idea behind this collection was to make a real
scene archive which would include a selection of the best scene productions,
regardless of when or where they have been released.

Dreams 2 is not another of those high profit CD-ROM. Our ambitions were to
make a high quality cdrom made FOR THE SCENE and BY THE SCENE available at a
low prize.

## Assembly'98: Advanced tickets are sold out. There will be a ticket
sell in the entrance of the party. If any of you forgot, the party
is held this weekend.

## Some reports in Network Magazine were announcing the return of
Guy Shavitt to the C64 scene. For you, childern, who didn't know
the C64 scene days, Guy shavitt (yea, double t) was a world-wide-
scene famous musician working on sidtunes. Since the scene back
then was smaller and based on BBS and Snail-mail swapping,
israelis were quite active and Guy Shavitt was one of the most
known musicians at that time. Something like Purple Motion / FC
in the PC scene. Ho, and by the way, those reports are false.
He did NOT return to any scene... (But it's nice people still
remember him...)

## Complex are making a Java demo for asm'98, according to Jmagic.

## Submitting entries for MC6 has ended. Judging started.

## Myth date was announced to bo 26.8.98. This goes out on Wednesday,
and not on a weekend, like was originally planned. There is a nice
story about the invitation intro, though: The coder, Atomic / Flood,
uploaded the intro only a few hours before he left for europe, and
since he couldn't get Krembo at that time, he just uploaded it to
the bbs. This caused Krembo, The main

  
organizer, downloaded the
intro like the rest of us... Thats why there was no info file
inside, too.

## Soon there will be a new Charts-Only Mag, Edited and released by
TEN members. So far Darkness / Imphobia, Civax / Moon Hunters,
Adok / Hugi and Programmer / UNV are the founders, probably having
Darkness as the editor. The Charts mag will be called 'WorldCharts'
and will contain international and national votings. Israel will
have its own national charts, too.

## Coax cable / BNC is looking for a coder or two to work on some
new non-BNC products for the comming parties. Contact him on the
BBS local mail.

## Ixalance, the new demo system by The Black Lotus (TBL) was ported
to Linux, too. This means that IXA demos/intros would work the
same, both on WIN32 platform AND Linux!

## Doc Holiday drafted to the army. Good Luck, Doc!

## Movement'98 invitation intro will work on Win32 platform and use
DirectX.

## Movement'98 is planned for the Hannuka Holyday, which means around
13th to 16th. Don't get it wrong, its not FROM the 13th TO 16th,
it means the party might start at 13, 14, 15 or 16 of December.
It will last, like last party, for 2 nights.

## As YOE erased their "Israeli Scene Web Site", another group
is wanted for creating and updating one.

## Tristan / Ivory had left Kosmic.

## Good news: Another prosecution against microsoft!
Microsoft will reveal parts of its win95 source code by the order
of the federal judge, Ron Boys, of Utah. Microsoft will give those
parts to Caldera company. As usuall, the prosecution is about
unfair buisness behaviur. If any of you remembers, once there was
a Dos called DR-DOS, developed by Digital Research for Novell.
This Dos competed MS-DOS as it had some better features, and it had
a constat share in the market. It was, naturally, gone when Windows
95 became popular. Ray Norda, one of the founders of Caldera and
former Novell chairman, bought the rights for DR-DOS along with the
right to sue Microsot. As we all know, Win95 is mostly a Graphical
User Interface (GUI) for MS-DOS 7. The prosecution claims they can
proove by the source code that Win'95 can "sit" on DR-DOS as well.
The computers vendors have to install Windows'95 when MSDOS is
already a part of it, thus eliminating any contest from other DOS
versions. If Caldera will be able to prove, using the source code,
that Windows can "sit" on DR-DOS as well, it will open a portal
for astronomic copencetion! The trail is supposed to start at
July 1999.

## IVORY is a new israeli group. The members are Tristan, Small Brain,
The Tentacle and Lore. Doc Holiday might donate some art once in a
while, when he'll have time from the army. We are all waiting to
see what they are planning...

Louis Lane - Won 2nd at SE'98, and by right. This is a great demo,

II - II by The Lost Souls is a wonderfull 3D demo. The
(by tls) cinematic camera movement, the painting ball section

Ixalance System - Ixalance, the Win32 system by The Black Lotus is
(by tbl) a new great system for showing thier demos and
intros on Win'95 or WinNT. Now, they also ported
the system to Linux! It means, you can take the
IXA file and run it on either system and you'll
have the demo/intro running the same on both!
A great way to code something and have it support
both platforms. Amust for LINUX users.

Disappointments:

## Assembly'98 invitation - Windows or not, TBL or not, this invtro was
BORING, SLOW and UNIMPRESSIVE. I expected more, specially from
that party, who always had great and innovative invtros. Atleast
the music is cool.

## Myth'98 invitation - I tryed to run the intro on 5 computers, from
pentium133 CirusLogic, to Pentium233 MMX with ATI and S3. Zilck.
It didn't run. When it is an intro like LuPPa by Fresh, I don't
mind since they can fix it sometime in the future. But a PARTY
INVITATION!? The party is in 2 weeks - I need to see the info!
AFTER I found a computer that does run it... Well... I'll just say
it wasn't worth the running and the time I've invested. I bet a
million that Flood could have coded something much much better if
they would have taken the project seriusly. What a pitty.


Protopad Choices
ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ

dis - An excellent demo, which includes many new and
(by Mandula) innovative effects, such as a hypertextured
(voxelled) FDT. There's no 3D engine to speak of,
and instead it is based on many 2D effects and some
"free direction" effects. Also, the music is an
unexpected bonus: a really cool jazz piece,
featuring a piano, flutes and some brass tools.
This is a refreshing change from the usual flow
of electronic music.

Stereo Mike - What is there to say? This demo got 3rd place at
(by Immortals) Wired'98 democompo (with a very small difference in
points from the 2nd place winner). Great effects,
awesome graphics and cool music. What else could you
ask for? Design is similar to TBL's, but this demo
runs faster on my system than any of TBL's demos...
