Well, this issue is late. Not 'normal' late like a week, by a REAL
late, like a month from issue #27. And why? I think you all knows
the answer - you guys just don't write articles. Its not so hard,
and you can find realy lots of subjects to write on. Just take any
old (or new) diskmag and go over the articles - I bet you'll find
even more then one subject you have what to write about. I also
must mention DNA-Groove and Sik who became almost regular writers.
In most of the last CFX News issues you can find their articles.
Anyway, Having CFX News out once per month is a bad thing, as lots
of changes takes place every week, specialy in our scene n' in the
BBS. I'll have troubles covering all these issues if I won't be
able to release CFX News every 2 weeks. This issue I have to cover
the CCO - CFX Career Office, the changes that will soon take place
in the board and the scene, and still List all new files, all the
new releases in the Israeli scene & check all the files so I'll be
able to reccomand on the good ones. Thats alot of work when we get
around 68 new files per week, while I'm almost the only one doing
the maintaince with Turk182 helping me on weekends.
So, CFX News is going to be released every 2 weeks. I hope I won't
have any problems anymore with articles.
I'd also like to use this stage and point on cycat new project, on
having a small review system for everyone updated by all of us. Go
talk to him, leave him a msg or even join and help him. Its for us
afterall.. :) By the way, I'm really happy about Quasars. This is
one group that is going to be the israeli ACME, with clean n' cool
layout and good products if not more. Keep up the good work, guys.
So, Till next issue...
See you OnLine!

Rise and fall of "giants"
by DNA-Groove / Embryo
Dealing with difficulties in scene terms may cause one to loose total
interest in his field of expertece. Such difficulties devide into several
subjects which most of them are ego related. Back in the year 1994 (the year
I introduced myself to what we called "scene" at the time), many people tried
to have their share of fame by releasing modules, forming groups and wander
around some BBS just to get some attention. Since that "many" people were
involved, competition became far from scarce. Competition is categorized as
one of the most common and dangerous difficulty a scener has to deal with.
Around that year certain names were quite known at the time for their own
talent and expertece in terms of tracking. Dr. Music, Ernest P. Werl (later
known as Westbam and later as Ravx), Prodigy (later known as somthin and later
as Kenzu) and if i'm not mistaken some nimrod called Doc and some others that
were considered "kings" for no appearent reason. All were considered
revolutionary pioneers at the time and their music was easier to find than
viruses. Competition among those artists was hardly a blood-bath but gaining
more fame was slowly taking the shape of a race.
I decided to join that race unknowingly. When i released my first releases
i had no idea i was going into an endless battle of persued fame and "fortune"
(which was measured by feedback from tracking fans). And there i was, an
unexperienced tracker "dueling" with those "giants". Most of the time, being
such a beginner, i couldn't imagine a way i could top these aces of music. And
from what i know by talking to some of them, quitting was as trivial as 1 2 3.
Being feeded by that kind of approach i was most likely to follow their path
and quit the scene only because i was virtually not good enough. Quitting and
the quitting scene personality is the spirit our scene was "blessed" with 4
years ago and is still quite cursed with in these days too. By that spirit we
lost some wonderful artists that could be even greater still today.
Competition is not the factor a scener is supposed to decide about his
"retirement", fun is the biggest factor of all in all scene matters.
Competition tore the fun off the old scene and it will do it again in our
times too, unless we let it. Instead of making music or any other kind of
demo making art, for fun, people started competing among them selves for the
better reputation. Who needs reputation if you're not making the most out of
the fun in creating something you feel good about. Getting good feedbacks has
a huge weight on the motivation but it's not to be competed on. One should be
happy about his share of acceptence in the scene, not to persue the favour of
the other sceneres by political manipulating techniques.
Why not try to enjoy a fellow artist's work, try finding the good things
you enjoy and the things you can learn from. Taking pride in one's success
has nothing wrong with it and should NOT be of any obsticle to the other
artists as long as one knows how to appreciate the other artist's art.
Mind you ALL

Linux: For and Against.
by Eli Yukelzon a.k.a fULGORE
Now days everyone is thinking about the future of our demo scene. The
DOS dieing proccess couldn't be stoped. And we got to face the facts:
We need to move on. The same thing is happening in outworld, i mean
non-demo-scene computer galaxy. Everyone is seeking for an ideal operation
system and desktop enviroement for their personal computers. The market is
catched by the big companies like Micro$oft, Apple, Sun, BE and others,
all of them provide their own operating system WITH their own computer's
proccessor's sturucture. And then comes Linux. The free port of a UNIX system
for all kinds of personal computers. It works on every kind of platform and
system configuration. And i want to make this thing clear : IT IS FREE.
It isn't only free about money. It is free in everything. Even a source code
is provided under GNU license, so now I can say to anyone:
"How Can YOU trust and OS that you don't got a source code to???"
and it will be right! Now you shouldn't scream: "Why the hell This WinBlowz
f*cks up my system? It isn't intent to!" If you see ANYTHING that doesn't
seem to work right, you just fix it by yourself :)
Now about writing demos under Linux. It is really neat idea to create a
platform independant demos. The first one that was created was Hellizer
by Q. It was fully written in C++ using a SVGALib(*). It was the first one
i saw under Linux.
I browsed thru the code and saw that it isn't THAT big deal to code under
Linux, in some cases(most) it is even easier! I mean, can you imagine a
demo that works on any PC from 486/66 to pentPro200 without any out-of-memory
errors? With Linux it will happen! I work on Linux for 3 years and never, i
mean NEVER, got that message on my 486 DX/4 100Mhz 8Mb. It is amazing,
beleive me ;)
Another thing about programing under Linux is that any program you see is
source-code-opened for you! Just look and learn! 70% of all software
programed for Linux is 100% free.
Now about the only one disAdvantage about Linux. As you saw in previous
paragraph, most software is given without payment. And that means, that
the monsters like Borland won't code a new C++ Builder or Delphi for
Linux... And that's the real problem now to make software vendors to create
stuff for Linux, to tell them that the users WILL pay. If that will happen,
i don't think that ANYONE will remember that long time ago was a phrase:
'600k should be enough for everyone'
CopyRight(c) Bill Gates 1989
If you feel like starting coding demos under Linux, just
get this svgalib, a good text editor (joe! :), Mikmod's Linux port,
the lastest gcc/gas version, and... go for it ! Everything you were
used to with DOS can be done with these tools, and much much more...
Fight moneymaker$ with your Hacker's Spirit ! LINUX RULES !
[ If you're searching a C template to start with, you may
find interesting looking at an old code I once wrote:
http://www.eleves.ens.fr:8080/home/massimin/creature
(it's the C file 'creature.c' ). It's far from being bug-
proof, but provides, under both X11 and DOS, what
a demomaker is longing for: a window, a bitmap, and 256
colors :) Just a thought. ]
So the idea of this article is that: go give Linux a try. It worth it.
really. You will love it as I, and will never leave it!
(*) SVGALib is a portable library of grafical functions for gfx
programing under Linux. It is a part of every Linux distribution.
p.s. you know what? Netscape Communicator 5.0 for Linux will be released
with full source code! Imagine that? go check: www.mozilla.org

ÍÍ Short Story ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[04]ÍÍ
Short Story
by SiK
March 18th, 1998
----------------
Felling of joy filled every happiness-forsaken corner in his heart. Laughter
burst within him to every limb in his body. This present he got for his 15th
birthday will surely serve him well, maybe even help him to implement what he
has studied all this time. After he cleaned up the table, his parents layed
the present on it. He attached all the elements that came with the packege
slowly togeather and sat down near the table. His new PENTIUM shined with
brightness, as the newborn rays of sunlight broke through his bedroom window,
revealing the opaque monitor. Bright flash appeared on the screen for a brief
of a second, as he flicked the switch that gave birth to his computer. His
eyes were suddenly filled with soft tears that nearly expressed the joy he
couldn't say himself.
"Mom, do you have a tissue? I've got something in my eye".
Jimmy was a young boy with short blond hair and shiny green teeth. As a
student, he did quite well on nothing. Before his parents bought him his new
Pentium, Jimmy had an icky 80386. He used to hang around at his friends,
hoping they would let him try some things on the "Scream Tracker 3.0 Beta".
He had no sound card, but he had a strange guitar teacher, who taught him to
play the piano for about 7 years. Jimmy held within himself many ideas he
wanted to share with the world, but he needed his own peace and quiet to
write.
Before Jimmy got his new Pentium, he was an anti-social maniacal kind of
person. Because of his own behaviour, Jimmy couldn't acquire friends easily.
As a matter of fact, he lost most of his friends. After his parents bought
him the computer, he was still an anti-social maniacal kind of person, but
with a sound card. This has opened many windows to his hidden talents; he
began exploring the mystaries of the new freeware his (only) friend gave him,
the "Impulse Tracker". Whenever Jimmy locked himself in his bedroom,
disconnecting from the outer world, every idea he kept within his heart burst
to the tips of his fingers, weaving dreams. Dreams made of notes and harmony,
beat that pumps inside the veins like electron pulses in a sea of endless
circuits. Every day that past by broke a tiny crack in the shell that Jimmy
lived in. He learned to open his mind to others, show his creations to the
new friends he made. He had spent about 1 year experimanting with the program,
gaining experiance from other's works also. Every one who came by to hear his
creations was deeply impressed. He was no ordinary tracker, indeed. The huge
amounts of compliments and feedback he got pushed him to seek for a larger
audiance. When he finally discovered the SCENE, he couldn't express what he
felt. Meeting new people, sharing ideas with them and just chatting with
others changed his entire life.
Jimmy's bedroom door was no longer locked.
Two more years past by. Jimmy was 18 years-old, and a great musician. When
he heard that a demo party was going to be held at his own country, he
searched for information about it. Jimmy decided to compose a groin-kicking
tune. After sitting for about 20 minutes in the bathroom (whole-wheat
crackers), the muse has finally hit him on the head. After recovering for the
hit (and the damage to his digestive system) he sat near the computer in his
bedroom, and began writing.
As he ended his new creation, spending 3 long months of labor, Jimmy felt
that a huge stone was lift from his heart. "I can now show the SCENE my
creation", he thought. The next day he packed his bags and headed to the demo
party.
Many people came to the party. Jimmy was uplifted all that time. He never
ceased to listen, over and over, to his own creation, correcting bits and
again playing it. Every one who passed by wanted to hear his tune, and was
very impressed. Full of confidence, Jimmy was sure the 1st place was reserved
for him, especially because every one who heard his tune said it was the most
beautiful among the other that they have heard. He walked to the computer that
stood in the corner of the hall, inserted his diskette to the drive and chose
to submit a product. He surely didn't pay any special attention to the power
faliure, that occoured exactly when the computer started copying the file. The
technician treated this small incident with a few kicks in the main power box,
cursing and swearing using an interesting foreign language. Jimmy copied the
file again, this time it went well. He surely didn't pay any special attention
to the power faliure. He did not foresee his destiny.
After the Multi-Channel competition was over, Jimmy was even more confident
about his winning. "The other songs weren't really amazing. And the last tune,
that oriental piece of music, dear God, the humanity! Who on earth would vote
for THAT?", he thought. All the attenders went to express themselves and to
grade the creations. All Jimmy thought about was his own winning. He didn't
care about the Demo competition, the Art or Animation. He didn't care about
that poor guy he electricuted by mistake, or the guy that broke his nose when
Jimmy bumped into him while pondering. He had to win. Music was his entire
life from the day he started to study at his teacher.
Millions of pieces. Blood stained pieces, long cracks, painful, stabbing and
injuring. Jimmy found himself unable to stand, he fell down to his chair. His
look focused somewhere beyond the organizer that gave the 1st prize to someone
else. "All this work, for nothing", he thought, "Nothing!". His dreams were
shredded to pieces, millions of pieces. "This must be a dream", he thought,
then he lifted his arm high up in the air, and punched himself. After waking
up he saw many faces looking at him, strangely. Someone hepled him to get up
from the floor. "Oh man, I guess my parents will have to pay for the fillings
that fell off", he thought, wiping the blood off his lips. The look on his
face suddenly turned to a crooked smile, like an insane prisoner that had just
finished knitting a sweater. He started yelling, "I knew it! It was all just a
dream! It was all just a...", then he stopped. The smile turned to a sad look
that spread over Jimmy's face. He realized it wasn't a dream. Jimmy cursed the
bureaucratic machine and decided to head home as soon as possible, planning
his evil and cruel vengence at the brutal dominants of Hell itself (the demo
party)...
Locking himself in his bedroom, Jimmy was so upset, that he drank
cough-syrup and ate doggy biscuits till he fell asleep. "This certainly
sucks!", he said to himself when he woke up. Jimmy stopped composing music for
a long time. Suddenly, there was no meaning to it. No meaning at all...
Today Jimmy writes commercial music and earns about $20,000 dollars a month.
He got married to a model and lives in a giant house, with 3 kids and a parrot.
Poor guy, he had to sell his yacht to buy a 60" TV for his second house in
Florida.
But that is not the moral of my story.
The (stupid) End!
Next time: "Inutsenzu", the story of an HIV infected Italian orologist, who
became a successful black rapper, on the background of the slaves trading at
North Iceland, in the late 1740's.

"I'm affraid there is nothing to do. We tried our best, but there
is no cure. We can't stop the process. DOS is dieing. I'm sorry."
Why are you in the scene?
No, realy, think about it - why are you in the scene? For the fun?
To watch great demos, hear great music and see great graphics. And
for the friendship, of course. You wanna creat, be heard/seen. You
try to do the most amaizing product that you can. Most of us are,
atleast. However, we all worked in the same conditions - Under DOS
and supporting GUS and SB. Sometimes even GUS only.
Well, things are changing. GUS, in all of its forms (ViperMAX, Max
n' PnP), is dead. N' DOS, the os we always used since the begining
of the PC scene, is dieing. It is not totaly dead yet, but when we
see that even in our scene, most of the people work under Windows
only - it means something. You want numbers? According to the Not-
so-accurate votings on Coders F/X BBS, we stand on 48% having only
windows without 'previus dos version' on thier computer. Thats
almost HALF the scene.
What am I saying?
Lets put it stright. We were going around this issue for the last
year or so. DOS is not dead yet and NOW it is the time to decide
on the future of our beloved scene. I'll count the options:
DOS: We can stick to dos, and die with it in a year or two.
Which means no more demo scne. :(
WINDOWS: This is currently the most popular PC OS. Moving into
Windows means more crowed, n' actually, it means we'll
stay in the mainstream.
LINUX: An OS gaining popularity, but as it is at the moment,
will not become popular. Its mainly for technical kids
like most of us, and unlike most of the world.
OS/2: A superior OS to the rest of those I listed. However,
due to shitty marketing, its even less popular then
Linux.
QNX: None of you heard of it, right? :) I rest my case.
Each got its pro's and con's and each of you will have to decide
for himself. I'll just give you additional info about whats going
in the WORLD scene.
Currently, the scene already eliminated all but 2 platforms: Linux
and Windows. At the moment, n' as it seems to be going, Windows is
on top. Specially after Direct-X was released n' a french group by
the name of The Black Lotus (TBL) released an amaizing system for
Win32 platform called IXalance, that proved all the effects we're
used to from the DOS scene are running exactly the same on Win32.
Linux, however, is behind only for its low popularity, and not for
its preformance. You can have a look on the demo GROOVY by BOMB, a
demo who won in Volcanic 4 a few weeks ago, and comes with a Linux
executable also.
CCO - CFX Career Office.
Thats where we get into the picture. The CCO is a new forum that
will keep you updated about whatever goes in the Linux / Windows
scenes. You'll find docs and sources for both of those platforms.
Ice / CFX Team is incharge of the Win32 forum and Fulgore / GB and
CFX Team is incharge on the Linux forum. I'm, naturaly, helps both
of them.
AFEED.
Ever heard of this project? AFEED means Aiming for Fast Execution
of Enhanced Demos. Its a project I recently got into and which its
future is not clear at the moment. AFEED suppose to be an Addon OS
for Windows, Linux and whatever platform you want. Its suppose to
be added to another OS and not as a Standalone. Other projects for
demos, like DemOS, failed since they tryed to jump too high - They
wanted to replace DOS, Windows and linux while adding extra speed.
Thats a big project. TOO big. And they failed. AFEED is aiming for
Demos mostly and games also. Think about it - you'll run your demo
on either Dos, Windows or Linux - and it will run the same! While
still coding in your favorite C compiler ofcourse... You can read
more on the BBS, if you want, or visit the official website at:
http://afeed.home.ml.org.
My opinion:
As much as Linux is a FREE and realy advance OS, which comes with
sources and everything - it is totaly not user friendly. Thats why
it won't be popular. I think that Windows platforms are going to
win this battle for the new scene. However, if AFEED, or a similar
project, will succeed - I think that would be the best thing. I'm
staying tune to whats going with AFEED. I still don't like windows
and win95 is still a pile of shit (Not to mantion its not even a
REAL operating system, basing itself on DOS 7) but what can I say?
Bill gates won, and people prefer to be treated like children,
working with pictures instead of reading words. What the Hack,
let the world sink in dumbness. We'll be there to glow in the
dark. Or something. :)

Demo partys - compo judgements
by Small Brain
--------------------------------------------
as you saw in the headline i want to talk about how to judge in different
compos at partys. What i mean is that lets say Multi Channel music compo,
the judges in my opinion should not judge only if the music is good but
they should look on the professional aspect too. They should look on the
complexity of the track and how the tracker uses his patterns wisely.
Let me tell you how I've got the idea for this article:
after movement 97 i downloaded the raytracing products and showed them to
my friend (which is a raytracer) n' he told me that some of the 3d models
there are quite simple, but it was a beatiful picture.
I think that in each compo there will be certein criterions that the
product will be judged with. I know that some of you say: "I don't care
how it was done or if it is complex, I want the final result". Well, I
think that we should judge the artist's (I don't mean just graphicians)
product on both the professional aspect and the final result. Let me give
an example of Demo compo criterions :
1) Code complexity - I mean that if the code uses many good effects,
complex 3d engine, new and good effects etc.
if the Demo is pure 3D engine with no more 3D
effects or 2D effects so less points will be given.
2) Design - If the music good, syncronized and the music style fit to
the demo, if the graphics was good, if the link parts was
good and pretty, if there was a good intersting story-line,
and above all - if the music, graphics, 3d scenes and the
code combined all together to one cool demo.
I think that the scene should gather musicians, graphicains, coders etc.
and should decide on criterions of each compo and this how it will be
judged. I know that in partys most of the points is given by the vote of
the audience but the least precent of the judges should be judged by this
criterions. And the orginazers should tell the audience this criterions,
they can't force them to give points by this criterions but atleast they
adviced them to. And i think that most of the audience will judge the
products by that.
I want to say that everything that was written in this article is only MY
opinion, i wish that it will be executed and used in demo partys. If
anyone have comments about this article - you are welcomed to leave me a
message at CFX bbs.

FAQ System - A reader and a data file containing _all_ the docs
you ever needed about every possible effect! It's
big in size but really worth it. It also featurs
one of the most original interfaces for windows I
have seen in a long time. You can update the data
file from the website.

[FAQSYS-D.ZIP (7,337k) Text: Prog. & scene info]
Timezone 64k - This is a realy good 64k that won 1st place at the
by BlaBla Volcanic 4 demo party a few weeks ago. Get it - it
is good!
[TIMEZONE.ZIP (70k) Intro: 64K]
Potato by Quasars - An original, Good looking and realy High-Standard
product by Quasars, the new Israeli group. It is
basicly a slide show of pictures made by Mic and
Simm, two great talents, along with good music n'
nice layout. They announced that the product was
inspired of NOX by Dark Spirit. Atleast for the
originality - I'll give them that for sure.
[QSR-PTT.ZIP (1,728k) Support: Sfumato]
NeoTrace by NeoWorx - This is a great program for all of you using the net.
You can give it any DNS or IP, like any http, ftp or
irc address and it will show you in a nice, graphic
way, through where you go to connect there. Good for
finding where is the weak link and why is it slow!
[NEOTRC10.ZIP (336k) Comm: Internet]
Kill Windows - A 3 _bytes_! program to show you how easy it is to
stuck windows'95. Includes asm source & executable
inside. Genius.
[KILLDOZE.ZIP (4k) Code: General Sources]
Free Direction - Another Israeli-Scene product, this time by Kombat
Rendering by of Immortals, one of our finest coders. This is a
Kombat / Immortals complete doc + sources explaining about RayTracing
in general n' free direction rendering in details.
This is one serius doc, and it serves the purpose.
Great release, Ohad.
[FREEDIR.ZIP (53k) Code: 3D]
Midas 1.1.2 - A new version of Midas. This pack contains all you
by Sahara Surfers need to use midas either on Linux, Dos or Win32.
It went along way from the old PASCAL version and
is now a serius, proffessional sound system. This
version is probably the last update before a major
release of Midas 2.0 - Just thought to remind you
all what a great music system we got out there.
[MIDAS112.ZIP (2,249K) Code: Music]
Ixalance system - This is the new system by The Black Lotus members
by TBL to show that demos are totaly possible under Win32.
You need the system itself (90k) to run all the TBL
new productions. They've converted 3 of thier newest
demos / 64k intros to that system and its realy cool
to see them in a window on your desktop.. :) Try it
out. Its a must, and Its one of the major changes in
our scene at the moment.
[IXALANCE.ZIP (189k) - The system
ASTRAL32.ZIP (4,628k) - Astral Blur demo

realy good demo, also comes with an executable for
Linux.
