Well.. I was intending to write about a little thing that bugs me, about
the waste of channels I see in alot of tracks lately (most of them are
in style of trance/dream etc.) such as doubled channels, but (yeah! like
that was not expected here...) ONLY today 15/10/97 I downloaded the LAST
Impulse Tracker version... If you have the last version of Impulse
Tracker than you probably know why it is the last version, if not - here
is the story:
Jeffrey Lim (the guy who made Impulse Tracker) made a diskwriter that
enables writing music on CD in mono n' the stereo version was to be sold
for people for money. Well, some people distributed it for free, and I
can't imagine how he feels... I mean, this great great man made Impulse
Tracker Vx.xx for absolutely free, and made more than just a great
tracker, I guess some people can't see the kindness, and only think
about money and profits.
So what do they do... Distribute the only thing Jeffery Lim was selling
(as far as I know). Isn't it enough that he made effort to create
Impulse Tracker for absolutely zero amount of money!!! for some people -
probably not!!!
I am not saying it just because there will be no further versions, but
because I think that he made Impulse Tracker from pure motives, the same
way I make music not for fame, not for money just for the fun and joy it
brings me when even one says to me :"I liked your track". So, the least
I could do was to thank Jeffery in my tracks, even if he never read it.
And if it seems that I'm writing this out of anger - I am, from one hand
I thought something as ugly and ungrateful as this would never occur,
but then again on the other hand there are people without consideration
in our world.
The only thing left for me to say is that I believe Jeffery Lim did for
all us - trackers a great job and we should thank him for that, one idea
I came up with is that trackers (which of them who wants to) could give
their best or favorite Impulse Tracker module to an ISRAELI Tribute
Music Disk to Jeffrey Lim, and that disk could be spread all over the
world by BBS'S or Internet.

What ever happened to Gravis soundcards?

[Note: This was an email I sent to the rest of my group on 28 Nov 1997.]
While at COMDEX, I took a quick peek around the multimedia section
upstairs (second floor, Sands Convention Center). The Creative Labs
section was huge (of course), and there were speakers and monitors
and every sort of graphics/audio thing you could imagine. About halfway
back, slightly to the right, was a huge hanging banner with the word
"Kensington" printed on it. Hanging from the foot of this banner were
three smaller square banners, the leftmost one simply read "Gravis". The
thing looked like a big "mobile" (if that's the right word).
Since I could really have cared less about any company there except for
Gravis, I made my way over through the teaming masses directly for the
sign. When I got to the booth (which was fairly large in its own right),
I saw Gravis Gamepads and joysticks on display. Sure enough, I'd found
the right place.
I sauntered up to a rep and asked him if Kensington had bought out
Gravis. "Yes", he said, "about 8 months ago." I inquired, "Doesn't
Kensington just make motherboards and memory?" - "You're thinking of
Kingston." And he was right, I was. Continuing, "but you've just hit on
an important point. Kensington is fairly well known in the track-ball
world, but hardly known outside of it. That why we wanted the Gravis
name."
"What about the sound cards?", I queried. "Ah yes. Well, unfortunately
the profit margin for the sound cards was VERY low. After years and
years of barely breaking even, they were discontinued." "So what
happened to the people who worked on the soundcards? What about the
inventory?" With genuine sympathy he intoned, "Sadly, 200 jobs were
lost and the last soundcards in the Gravis line are being sold off
now."
"I bought my first GUS in '93. I still remember how clean the sound
was, how the samples could be loaded directly to the soundcard to
give CPU ticks back for demos, how the SDKs were readily released for
a generation of scene coders to work with. It's very sad news to see
your company finally giving up the soundcard line, but I just wanted
to thank you for 5 years of kick ass hardware in the scene I love
most."
"You know," he said "you would be amazed at the number of people who
have come up to me during this show who were die-hard Gravis Ultrasound
fans and sorry to hear of the soundcard's demise. Seems like we never
really had a large following, but we did have a very LOYAL following.
It's been nice talking with you."
Somehow I felt as though my tour of the COMDEX multimedia section had
drawn to a sudden yet somehow appropriate close.
When I got back home a week later, I resumed work on a personal audio
CD project. In one window, Cubic Player was writing some tracked tune
to a .wav file, while in another I was actively editing/listening to a
.wav file with CoolEdit Pro. It didn't even occur to me until just now
how cool the ViperMAX is. Here I have a Sound Blaster Pro HARDWARE-LEVEL
compatible card, with the classic GUS I love included. The device
functions as two separate soundcards (one mainstream, one PC Demo Scene),
yet takes up a single slot. I'm really glad that the specifications for
the last Gravis-designed card (GUS Extreme) were sold to another company
(Syngery, who call the card ViperMAX).
The Gravis soundcards are no longer being produced, but at least the
lineage will continue.
