New released Soundcards reviews
Some important points...
This review is NOT completely based upon my *own* experience with these
sound-cards. It's written by using LOTS of info's and text-files, among
other people's impressions who have or had these sound-cards. I may be
wrong in some specs, but almost everything is checked and verified.
Feel free to correct me about mistakes.
STN (signal to noise ratio) is the relation beetween the Sound signal
and the added noise to it. The higer, the better.
lets get to the main thing:

³Gravis Ultrasound PnP PRO³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ
The new full-duplex plug n'play Gravis Ultrasound. Uses the Interwave
chip by AMD. There are rumors that AMD stopped the Interwave project.
Gravis got many complaines about the GUS PnP, mostly because of the
buggy drivers (the first version), and the missing features. In the new
version of the drivers (2.2 or something) most of the bugs were fixed.
Estimated price is 220$ - not distrebuted in israel; The production of
Gravis soundcards has been stopped...
Specs: (for the full specs search for GUSPINFO.ZIP)
- 32 voice Wavetable MIDI (/synthesizer)
- 32 Channles for digital effects
- 48khz hardware mixing (no cpu usage, can keep up the 44khz with
more than 14 voices, unlike the GUS MAX...)
- Signal to Noise ratio is >80db (greater than), no exact amount
is given;
- Comes packed with 1mb ROM, 512k RAM, can add up to 16mb RAM
(yeah you hear right, you can cross the 8mb barrier!)
- You can use the 'Sound Canvas' patches - people say that this
Rocks!!! (among other soundcards patches)
- Full duplex support. (rec&play the same time)
- Games compatibility - comes with an INTERWAVE emulator (???)
(in case that it doesn't work properly i think) and with an
SB-Pro emulator... hehe... sbpro...?!?
- Doesn't have an FM chip, so it software-emulates it by using
the Wavetable. (kinda strange)
- Comes with good bundled software. (cakewalk XP, soundforge XP...
among others)
Bad (&strange) stuff:
- THE GUS PnP has *NO* Real-Time effects! -- no reverb, chours,
flanging and fading unlike what was told in their site!
- Extended manual (a file on a cd) comes only in Adobe acrobat
format. (some people say it's better this way...)
- Dos mixer missing!!! hehehe... you can't change the volume from
DOS!! But u can use other card's mixer, i just dont remember
the name right now. :)
- No Patch editor/patch manager! Gravis is lying again - unlike
what's written in their site. There are 2 solutiones for this
problem: one of them is AWAVE - a software that can edit the
GUS PnP pathes, but still...
- Eats your available resources! needs 4 irq's! 3 (or 4) DMA's!
again, there's a solution for this - a program that restraines
the card by changing the card's eeprom.
For conclusion:
If you're REALLY serious with MIDI, you'll get very mad about
the missing patch-editor. The alternative patch-editor doesn't use
the Interwave chip features... but for a tracker, this is the
Best-buy option. (it's superb only because it's low price, not to
mention the EWS64xl...) The missing stuff - no real-time effects
and Patch editor - The GUS PnP was supposed to have them included.
In Gravis's site, it's still written at the features of the card...
Bad news:
Gravis has discontinued it's sound-card production line (without
telling nothing officialy to the public)... This thing amazed me.
In the last E-mail reply i sent them they wrote "Gravis is
unaware of any distrebuters or resellers that still might carry
these discontinued items, Good luck in your pursuit of finding
a sound-card" (pursuit?!? bullshit!)
Lots of people say that Gravis has become a LAME company these
days... (bye bye gravis soundcards :)
Dont understand me wrong, I still think this soundcard is Superb.
If you want to get one, do it fast before there will be no GUS
PnP's left...

³Terratek's AudioSystem EWS64XL³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ
The compare with this top professional soundcard is unfair. mostly
because it costs the triple the GUS (german street price is 700dm -
which is around 1330 nis, and costs alot more in other countries).
Like anything else that costs more, it's ofcourse MUCH MUCH better!
It's the dream of every professional musician. (not only...)
This monster comes with a *Front-Panel*, which is connected to the
backwards of the card by a cable. All the connections (or most of them)
are on the panel. Terratek is a new company, founded only on 1994
(unlike the old 'creative' grandfather...) and in 3 years has made a
breakthrough! This soundcard's output quality euqles a professional
studio soundcard (96db), which means you get a CLEAN Sound & HD record!
uses new sound tecniques, the EWS64xl is only around 4 months old! The
whole card is manufactured in Germany, Currently there's no distrebuter
in israel. (if you know someone that can import this soundcard, tell him
to contact Terratek FAST!!)
Specs: (for the full specs search for EWSINFO.ZIP)
- Duplex MIDI-Interfaces for simultaneous recording and playback with
up to 32 MIDI channels.
- Digital-Input stereo S/PDIF Format (32kHz, 44,1kHz and 48kHz)
- 2 Digital-Outputs stereo S/PDIF Format (32kHz, 44,1kHz and 48kHz
up to 20bit!)
- 5pin jacks in the front-panel for the connection of MIDI-devices...
connect your favorate synthesizer! (if you have one... :)
- Extended Wave Synthesizer with up to 64 voices (yeah, 64 channles
in your tracker!)
- 48khz hardware mixing (like the GUS PnP, No CPU usage!)
- 2 Stereo-outputs with up to 18bit DACs
- Signal to Noise ratio is 96Db (Amazing output! no background noises,
complete silence!)
- Comes with 2 MB sample RAM onboard, 4 MB sample RAM as SIMMs,
upgradable up to 64MB RAM. The type of the memory is the same as you
have on your computer - 72pin, which means you can buy the damn
thing everywhere.
- Effect-Processor (DSP - Digital Sound Processor - even my AIWA doesn't
have this awesome thing) with reverb, chorus, equalizer, virtual and
real room simulations on 2 and 4 channels (Real-time effects, like
what the GUS PnP was supposed to have... ):
- You dont need to be afraid of compatibility! the EWS64xl can be
detected as Windows-sound-system (48khz, 16bit) which is supported in
almost 90% of the games. (if you already have a creative SB16 or
better it won't be a problem)
- Extended full duplex support. (1 stereo chn record, 63 stereo
channles playback)
- Has an Internal BIOS, that can be updated from time to time
when needed.
- Has an FM synthesizer, 20 voices, stereo, unlike the GUS PnP...
Bad Stuff:
- Some software bugs like in every soundcard...
No serious bugs have been found yet. (it seems this card is perfect!)
For conclusion:
you must be thinking, why the hell buy such a sophisticated soundcard?
with a front-panel!? 2 duplex midi inputs&outputs? Quality Sound is the
most important thing here. The only thing i can say is: Get a ticket to
germany and buy this SUPER-AWESOME Audiosystem EWS64xl! (or wait untill/
if it gets to Israel, I dont have any info about ordering it directly
from germany, if it's possible)
By reading it's (full) spec's, other people's impressions, and listening
to an amazing sound-sample, i can say it's the BEST soundcard available.
(at it's price ofcourse. or you can buy a studio soundcard that costs
more than 3 times your computer and be happy! :)
Since the authors of Mod4Win are the main driver/software developers
for the EWS64, it comes with it's own mediaplayer, currently supports
only XM (among other low formats), but no IT yet. (i think... :)
Currently, Impulse Tracker is the only tracker that supports EWS64xl,
only in software mixing. Future versions of IT will also support
hardware mixing.

³Creative's Sound Blaster AWE64 GOLD³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ
The ultimate gamers card. 100% compatibility gaurenteed... Uses a renewd
EMU8000gs chip. Like the audio section of the AWE32 and the AWE 64, the
audio section of the AWE64 Gold is not good (that's what i've heard),
but the signal to noise ratio has improved.
I wasn't surprised that most of the people at the Sound-card voting
booth chose the AWE64gold for the best soundcard. This is ofcourse
because of the reputation that Creative labs have in Israel... but if
you think that because of the "gold-plated" outputs you get the best
output quality, then you're wrong... :)
The lowest price i've seen was around 235$ (in israel ofcourse)

- 32 voice Wavetable MIDI, Wavesynth/Waveguide software adds up to 64
MIDI channles- it's *NOT* a real 64 MIDI soundcard, but it sure works
like one!
- 32 Channles for digital effects (? - unverified)
- 44.1khz hardware mixing
- S/PDIF stereo 'gold plated' Digital outputs
- Real-Time effects: reverb, chorus.
- Signal to Noise ratio is 90Db (good output)
- Comes packed with 4MB RAM, can add up to 28mb RAM, only special
creative chips.
- Full duplex support. (rec&play the same time)
- Comes with very good software, like any sound-blaster series
soundcard.
- The most compatible soundcard in the market...
Bad stuff:
- No more Simm's for the RAM, instead - expensive creative
chips! hehehe...
- Bad news for trackers: the 175khz "bug" (or whatever you call it)
hasn't been fixed yet. no (digital) notes above 175khz will be heard.
i got complains from Master Card about that. hehehe... :)
For conclusion:
If you play games and you want the best compatibility, it's the
best-buy for you. it's not the state-of-the-art soundcard (though
it has some new and renewd stuff). Tests have shown that the
GUS PnP audio section is better then the AWE64gold, and ofcourse
the audio section of the EWS64xl is much much better then the GUS's... :)
so what the hell, buy it if you dont wanna have bugs & compatibility
problems. (you never heard that from me... )

This year, unlike the 2 last years, the party is open to the public.
what does it mean? For you, dear sceners, it means there will be
some NON-SCENERS competiting. It means some people which doesn't
know our scene life will come to see what we're worth. The scene
always thought to be the best in its field, but are we? We might
have proffesionals comming to see or to take part in the event.
This means you have to work and work HARD.
Raise the level, produe your stuff, win your prizes.
