Editorial
by Civax / Moon Hunters

Another issue of CFX News is on your screen and I think its becoming
a habit... While compiling this issue I couldn't stop from having a
little smile. It happened that most of our articles are dealing with
the same subject exactly. :)

So, This issue we're talking about CRITICISM and about getting some
FEEDBACK from others. I'll make it short as there are three articles
descussing this issue already. I do think people need feedback. Hey,
thats why we release products! To be heard! Yet, sometimes we get
negetive reactions. It ain't that 'fun' when it happens, but we must
learn to accept it, too! It might give us another point of view on
our product. Anyway, I think we need something like RATING on files,
like we once tried to do here, in CFX News. What I need for that are
SCENERS ready to help and evaluate new israeli productions. If any
of you are intrested - you know how to reach me.

(new subject)
As some of you had seen, I have started to write a set of tutorials
in hebrew, teaching Assembly and the basics of programming. I don't
try to publish it too much, as I still want to get reactions on my
FIRST part of the set. Please, even if you're not a coder, take the
file and have a look. All I want to know is whether my writing is
clear and fluid enough for people without any background in coding.
So, have a look - and write comments!

(new sobject)
In this CFX News issue you are presented with the first official
MYTH'98 information. Myth'98 is organized by Krembo / Emerge, who
was also one of the co-organizers of Ritual'98. The party suppose
to be due on August 1998, though it is still unknown what will be
the setting. If you remember, Krembo did not like the setting of
having the big screen in the main hall, so I guess we'll just have
to wait and see. I sure hope its gonna be a great party, and I'm
quite optimistic about this one. :)

(new and last subject)
As you can see, CFX News is not LUNA, and since I keep it small, I
can release it more, and more often. I try to develop it, though,
By adding new setions, removing old and boring ones, and lately by
even adding a nice little viewer (coded by good old goodbyte :).
However - I still need your help. All I want is feedback. Tell me
what you like. Tell me what you dislike. Give me new ideas you've
got and would like to see on the Newsletter. I promiss to credit
whoever it needs :)

So, Till next issue...
See you OnLine!

ÍÍ Annual Review for 1997 ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[02]ÍÍ

Annual Review for 1997
------------------------
by DNA-Groove / Embryo

I came to realize that what our scene people really need is someone to tell
them how they've been in a certain period of time or on a certain product.
Whether that review points on positive and/or negative aspects, it's what the
scener wants to know. Many sceners (much like myself) find it hard to create
without getting some reactions to their creations. Commemts take a significant
part in the motivation to create.
When i realized that commenting can make it's mark that significantly i
started writing reviews about the subject i know a little about. Music. At
first, I started writing reviews concerning music in demo parties only. I
was very untamed with my first reviews, very raw. Made mistaked, apologized
god knows how many times, but finaly i learend the right and wrong in writing
a good review.

Therefor i bring you the ultimate and utterly conclusive review of all
regarding the Israeli music scene. In this review you'll find only the "cream
de la cream", the top of crop in Israeli music releases. Everything you can
think of was being reviewed here, Music disks, single releases, group packs
and even demo tunes. All were reviewed, BUT only the very best of them will
grant itself the honorable title of "Product of the year".

I'll release a review on a bi-monthly basis, the review will be based upon
releases within these two months between reviews. And of course an annual
summary of the best productions of each year, for as long as i have the
patience for you guys. :)

the rating method is devided to segments which each represents a method of
packaging. Music disks will have it's own segment as well as single releases
and so on. All the products i'll review here were given a subjective grade.
Every grade given was given by my own personal and professional opinion.
I can't make any exceptions regarding symbolization in a tune. For instance,
if i review a tune which is a tribute or a monumental piece, it'll get it's
grade based on a professional point of view. same for all kinds of flames and
jokes. Meaning, if you intend to make a joke or just flame somebody, try at
least to make it good.

All releases reviewed here were downloaded and provided by the two wonderful
sysops of Coders F/X BBS and Oripop Music BBS. Only releases that were
uploaded to these centers will be reviewed. If a certain artist wishes that
his production will NOT be reviewed he must post a message to me in any of
the BBS's stated above or send an e-mail regarding that certain production.

The annual review for 1997 will be posted by the end of April 1998. The
comming review will also include ALL releases since the beginning of 1998.

Am I bored or what?! :)

ÍÍ Reflections on Movement '97 ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[04]ÍÍ

Reflections on Movement '97
by Tomer Gabel (Holograph)

Unlike others, I've no intention of discussing the actual competitions.
On the other hand, like others, I will discuss scene spirit and the things
that either pissed me off or pleased me about Movement '97.

First off, I'd like to say that in my opinion, Movement '97 is by far the
best party ever in Israel. I disagree with people who say it has become
"commercial", because it hasn't. Unlike Assembly parties, which had
outrageous entrance fees, Movement '97 had a pretty reasonable entrance fee
considering the amount of sponsors, prizes and other "minor" topics such as
damage coverage, electricity and phone bills, and probably other equipment
and things I and you are unware of.

The most annoying thing about the party was not the organizers fault and has
nothing to do with the actual party. It has to do with you sceners, and it
has much to do with private, materialistic possesions, and general behaviour.
Three HDs were stolen at the partyplace. Three HDs of various sizes, some
containing party entries or other important data. Three.
Daniel Zoran (a.k.a Thor) was one of those people, who were shocked and
dismayed to find their HDs "missing". Missing, obviously, does not mean
"lost", as the HD was attached to Dark Spirit's computer at the time it
was stolen. The organizers did their best to persuade the thieves,
whoever they are (although I have a pretty reasonable suspicion of who
stole it), to return the disk, which held Daniel's entry to the graphics
compo and major parts of the original Immortals demo. Immortals had lost
important parts of the demo and had to create a new one in a short period
of time - 8 hours. Ironically, this demo had won the demo competition,
which shows something about Immortals' ability. Some discussion with
Immortals' members shows that they appear to have had some of the missing
parts of their demo, but were too depressed to finish their original
demo.
I've personally witnessed someone at the partyplace (no names) go round
tables, snatching some "loose" equipment, completely oblivious to whether
people were eyeing him or not, all this while his friends were hanging
around and not saying a word. I reported this to the organizers, which
later caught him and generally threw him out of the partyplace. While this
may be the only "legal" action possible under the circumstances while not
involving the police, Thor's HD still hadn't turned out.

Another bad thing about the sceners was their behaviour. Set aside actual
illegal acts, some people were great and behaved as sceners should - be
nice to one another, help and appreciate. Others, on the other hand,
patronized one another and were complete assholes. I will not give away
names, suffice to say several groups of people simple patronized, spread
stupid rumors (such as the one about me comming to Movement '95 with my
mother, or something like that. Now that you've finished laughing, I'd just
like to say thanks to whoever spread this rumor - you know who you are).
Some people behaved like complete jerks, insulting the organizers (who did
a GREAT job), nuking other people on IRC, constantly trying to hack the
voting system etc., not to mention constant tampering with Bezeq's ISDN-
demonstration computers (namely, putting porno pics as background. Big
deal).
One of the worst things people did was practical sabotage, as some people
burned a table in the sleeping hall, or something of this sort. Apparently
someone thought tampering with the network was real funny, as it crashed
about 5 times during the party with no reason (no, not a technical reason
either. The network was great, and it worked, thank you very much.)

As for the organization, as I was already saying, it was GREAT! Civax
tried real hard to include some international-party-elements into it, most
successfully. While some complained about the "main hall with big screen"
idea, I found it most refreshing (it was much easier staying awake this
way). The party network worked great, the permanent Internet connection
was a wonderful idea and worked like a charm.
Some things should be added to the next party - network game competitions
(Duke3D, Quake, Blood, Doom, the options are endless!), perhaps a main
network server with Hornet Underground CD on. As for the volume - maybe
you should give ear-blockers to guys like me, who have problems with
all-too-high-volume :)

Well, this settles it. Later, Holograph / BSP

ÍÍ Appendix A - Criticism ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[05]ÍÍ

Appendix A - Criticism
----------------------
by SiK

This topic really bothered for a few days, so I decided to show my opinions
to the entire homo-sapiens. This is not really an article, but an appendix, so
don't take it seriously. Really.

Criticism is an invention of nature for improvement. People probably don't
understand that, because every innocent bush of criticism that grows in the
field of the scene, is shredded to pieces by the sickle of the angry scene
mob. Pure intentions to mend the wrong (or plain opinions of the writer) are
turned to fascistic comments, intended to maim the sacred dignity of the
criticised scener. Blasphemy letters are sent to whoever has the courage to
say what is in his mind. Little Ken dolls become cute voodoo replicas of the
writer. People are letting pride block their minds, instead of understanding
the purpose of the criticism, which is to help them improve themselves. A
man just can't control himself when he sees a comment, that is not
necessarily derogatory, but constructive, about him or his work; blood
floods his brain, veins are threatening to explode in a fire-work show of
anger. "That son of a K-9! How dare he write that about me?!".

Surprisingly, most of the people who write criticism (such as me) aren't
evil at all (no, I'm not evil at all). They are just bothered with a certain
happening and want to arouse awareness that hopefully will change it, hence
making a better world for all of us.
And maybe a better scene for all of us, too.

Criticism is an opinion of the writer. Nothing more. But for some reason,
sceners appear to have the impression that if a strong personality in the
scene writes his opinion, it is the complete, ultimate and collective point-
of-view, of the entire scene. That is - if the writer expresses his lack of
pleasure from a creation, it surely means that the "artist" is a pain in the
ass of the scene, must not show his horrible abilities to the frightened
public, and should commit suicide as soon as possible, for the sake of all
the lifeforms in the galaxy.

You probably know where I'm heading to from this point. Be reasonable,
don't let harsh crtiticism pop veins in your brain, you'll end up dead. Try
to look at your work from the eyes of the writer; if you think he has no
solid basis for his opinion, you can comment him about it, instead of
mixing a violent explosive that will surely give him a bad hair day. Try
knitting.

Last and most dispensable: it would be a really moronic thing to do, but if
you may want, for some strange and unexplained reason, to criticise me about
this appendix, you can send your hate to SiK in Coders F/X, but I wouldn't
suggest you to do so. If you do have an urge to send me mail, please, have
your neurons checked first. Thank you.

ÍÍ Judgements in the music scene ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[06]ÍÍ

Judgements in the music scene
by Kaz / Trip, Spies

People around the Israeli scene continue to improve in the quality of
their art, in their knowledge of the scene, and many are getting more
and more involved in the scene. All of that is good, and it's really
positive that this is happening, since the scene until the last year
was in a need of such a rebuilding.

So the scene is probably going to be in good shape for a while. But
there is a problem with the scene. It's not the problems that we all
know about and keep whining about them all the time (admit it, we do
it all the time, and it's pretty fun). Today the major problem with
the scene is not the art, not the lack of creation, not the lack of
involvement and DEFINATELY not the lack of talent.
In our scene people have a tendancy to have SLIGHT ego problems.
How many times has someone told you that he's better than you? Or
that persons A B and C have talent but D E and F are pieces of
worthless crap? Or that one group rules the scene (usually it's the
one that the speaker is in). People keep taking these stands, and
without noticing it, nearly everyone in our scene is sure that one
group or a few artists (usually his friends or himself) are the best,
and is unwilling to hear any other opinions.

The only problem is that not only the new sceners are ego trippers,
but many old sceners have some miserable comments from time to time.
Did anyone read the Embryo NFO? it states something in the order of
well, it's no secret that in my opinion, the one and only best
tracker in Israel is Kenzu. In my opinion, his technique is the best
By far, and he's far more creative and original than the Embryo
members, and his range is from ambient and breakbeat to trance. Well,
what makes Paso better than him? Personal preference. That's perfectly
legitimate. But stating in the NFO of a group that it's members are
the best is far from being within the bounds of good taste. The
problem is, that Embryo aren't the only ones. Trip (my group) has
it's share of ego (BTW: Kenzu does not believe he's above the scene,
so stop saying that he thinks like that. His help to other trackers
in the scene is by far the greatest. Different than trackers that set
an example, most trip members and others where tought by him.
The fact is that no one tries to change his act, and speaking to
sceners (not to mention messaging) gets *mixed* reactions.

People should start thinking before talking, and think if they're
making fools of themselves or just making themselves appear abnoxious
in front of the rest of the scene. I'm sure the scene will be a much
more comfortable, not only a higher quality one.

(btw: DNA-Groove, you know I love you man, don't take personally what
I wrote about embryo. It's true though)

Note. This article was originaly posted on the bbs, in the CFX Scene

enough to be included here. Unfortunatly, I've tried to find KAZ for
his premission, yet could not reach him, as he serves in the army at
the moment. However, every article entered in Scene Times can be
posted in CFX News, as the title screen of the mag clearly states.
Just to keep the record stright.

ÍÍ New Files Summary - civax choices ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ[13]Í

Perfect Harmony - I didn't have alot of time this week so I did not
by checked this whole package, but I have viewed the
The Torrent Project pictures in this pack and they are GOOD! Have a
look yourself, n' maybe YOU'll tell me what's the
exe file is all about...
[HARMONY.ZIP (3,062k) Art: Original pictures]

Stach 64kb intro - STASH by TBL (The Black Lotus). Well, this big and
admired group is some-what a new raising force in
the scene. Stash is thier last 64kb n' it features
some realy cool graphics and effects. Have a look!
[STASH.ZIP (71k) Intro: 64K]

NOX by Dark Spirit - Dark Spirit last creation before joining the army.
It is a 20Mb MP3, full with varius music styles n'
a nice attraction: It got vocals by me, dna groove
and some others sceners. A very UNIQUE creation by
Dark Spirit / TTOM (its alive!?)
[NOX.RAR - NOX.R15 (17 files, 19,343k)
Support: TTOM WHQ files]

FLAG'98 - 64kb - I was very surprised to see some quite good intros
comming from Flag'98 Demo party, as it does not
enjoys almost any reputation at all. Though, all 6
64kb available for now ARE quite good. Go and have
a look.
[Flag98: 64kb intros]

Assembly tutorial - Since Civax / Moon Hunters is the writer of this
Part I (hebrew) production, and thats me, if you noticed, I won't
start to prise anyone. This is the first out of
about 20 more lessons to assembly. It is written
in clear hebrew n' I've tried to make it as light
and as easy as possiable. The first part suits
any programming language. Read and enjoy...
