That 'coma' intro-sentence, I think, reflects perfectly what I had in
mind after reading "The world is laughing at us", on CFX-NEWS #16.
DNA gives us a good point to think about - Do we suck or not, as a
music scene? This question should divide into 2 different questions:
1. Do the music scene itself suck?
2. Do the voters on the demo-parties suck?
I'll try to answer each question at a time...
The music scene ITSELF does not suck at all. Actually, it is the most
VETRAN field of the Israeli scene and it can *easily* stand in every
'world-level' criterion. We have great trackers, great modules (Hell,
I sound like our present prime minister!!), and even today we can see
how almost unknown new trackers can come and surprise us all with
good modules (Stalin). The music scene is outstanding.
DNA's more important point is the non-tracking-sceners, equals usual
coders, GFX persons, or even active sceners with no definition. Yes,
there is alot of truth in the saying that not-many can see tracking
'clearly', means to watch deeply into the tracking technique and the
style, or even to see that a module is better than another, EVEN if
his style is not one you like. If I may analyze the head of the
common voter, I think I can give an explanation why the Millennium
results turned out to be as they were. DNA gives Paso's "Solitude"
as an example for his opinion. Solitude is real quality *but* his
style is not too popular here, and t here is nothing we can do!!!
"Shifting Grounds" (M.T.) was well made, and it has a common style
(DNA Groovy in many ways!) - thing which gave him a good place in the
finals. You can't say under any condition that only crap won, because
the good tunes layed in the same place with shitty modules like those
too (really) bad LIQ files (no offense, creators!!!). So what judge
here is the STYLE, not the tracking quality. Orbiter was a nice and
(VERY) simple piece, which you enjoy to hear, and you're likely to
remember due to the speech-gimmick. That is why it got 1st! Look at
Mellow-D's work! A true genius. Wonderful tracking and module
building - but his style is weird, and not many likes it. His kind of
(usual) stuff will NEVER win a compo, not here (Certainly) and not
outside (I guess).
The most important thing I have to say is this - the change must come
from US, even if it'll cause us a 4th or a 7th so-called 'Hodowgate'.
The solution is NOT bringing outsiders from other countries to judge
our stuff. If this will happen - we will KNOW we suck, we will
UNDERSTAND we can't be good enough to hold ourselves and the world
will REALLY be laughing at us, because we will become a "custody
state" of our European brothers. The solution might be giving more
weight to the (Israeli) judges vote, but the permement solution is to
make the Israeli scene more familiar with high quality tunes, from
here and from the outside!
That will happen only if we will start to do something that NO-ONE
here does, except very few, and that's giving eachother *SUPPORT!*
When was the last time you called a scener and told him how great his
new work is? When did you want to receive that call YOURSELF??? Yet,
what DO we have? Cold upsetting *voting booths*!!! Cold medals and
grades! Antipathic critic with no emotions n' more goodies like that.
How can the level go up, if the scene's artists see there is no
appreatiation to their work?
Do us all a favor: If you think a product is good, congratuale the
author or give him some good ideas how to make it better in the
future. Then all of the above problems will be gone, because there
will be *NO* ultra-low-quality stuff in the scene.
