Saxonia Issue 04 Part 024
Sane - don't make me laugh
By Rumrunner/VOID

People running Windows on their computer have one advantage that almost
nobody else have, perhaps except mac-folks. There are never any problems
finding a driver for different hardware.
On other operatingsystems, like bsd or linux, things are a bit different.
Some people may remember the article I wrote in Saxonia 1, about the printer
I didn't get to work on my Amiga. If you don't remember that, I'm speaking
of a Lexmark Z22 printer. This isn't all too easy to get to work in linux
either. There are no drivers for the printer for the printingsystem named
cups, but there's a driver for lpd, another printingsystem. Too bad that
this is pure shite to set up. I'll have to take a look at that sometime
when I'm really drunk. It's the only way to cope with it. Until then, I
solved the situation easily by means of getting a Hewlett-Packard
colour laserprinter which supports postscript.
Also, I have never found anything that will make my Midiman midiinterface
work on linux/bsd either. Well, so far I haven't found a single
sequencerprogramme either, so it's not too irritating yet.
However, one thing irritates the shit out of me, and that's Sane. It's short
for scanner access now easy, a system to let you use most scanners on linux
or bsdmachines. And, you knew it, yet another time, they managed to support
about all possible and impossible scanners except mine. Fuck, is this
an attempt to make me throw out all my computers and never touch one again?
It surely seems like it, and the worst thing is that if that would have
been the goal of most gplcoders, they are very close to succeeding. I
hate bsd and linux more and more each day simply because of incidents like
this one. Now, I have gotten another scanner, a big scsi-scanner which I
got for free from a buddy in exchange for some coding I did for him. I
cannot wait to get an adaptor so I can hook the scanner up to my computer
and check if that one works with linux. If not, it's a big possibility that
any kind of unix won't see any use except for servers here in my home again.
