Saxonia Issue 03 Part 017

Here's my contribution to Saxonia 3. The article was originally written
for Devotion 3 - a mag that unfortunately never saw the light of day. The
article got changed a few times to fit into various mags, but was never
released after all. However, now it will be out in the third edition of
nothing else than Saxonia by Void.
d WHEN A CHILD IS BORN
It's Christmas time, and this time a year brings forth great memories. For
approximately 2003 years ago it has been told that a miracle happened.
Personally I think a 1 miracle0 happened a Christmas 16 years ago when I got
my first Amiga. It was just an amazing feeling to take this fabolous
machine home. I remember being so excited when loading my very first Amiga
game. No need to to say I played plenty of games the years to come.
Anyway, it can be no doubt that my Christmas was saved that year! The next
Christmas I discovered the Amiga scene, and in January I was a member of my
first international Amiga group. Another scener was born.
d THANK GOD IT'S CHRISTMAS
The Christmas time has been very special for sceners almost from the start
of the scene, because there were organized lots of Christmas parties
everywhere. At these Christmas parties lots of cool productions got
released. I can't really recall the very first Christmas intros or demos I
saw, but some were dedicated to the 2 Christmas spirit.0 They often had the
group logo at the top, a small picture with Christmas motive or Santa Claus
animated in the middle of the screen in addition to some effects, and
naturally a scroller at the bottom. Sad to say I can't remember any
spesific Christmas inspired production from the first years. However, the
first productions I do remember being released around Christmas weren't
very inspired by Christmas. But they were again extremely good.
Yes, from around Christmas 1991 I guess most sceners uttered "Thank God
It's Christmas", because from now on we got to see lots of quality
productions each Christmas. Infact, some of the very best scene
productions ever have been released at Christmas time. Most of these
productions were also released at the best party-series ever, after my
opinion, The Party in Denmark.
d WONDERFUL CHRISTMASTIME
The sceners had definately a wonderful Christmastime at The Party in
Denmark. In 1991 we remember amazing productions such as 2 Hardwired,
Odyssey Yoyage and Turmoil0 released at the Party. The year after, at the
Party II, we saw the great creativity of sceners in productions such as
2 State Of The Art and the 3d demo II0 , and naturally in lots of other
productions as well. Ten years ago, at the Party III, it was obvious that
the Party-series was way ahead in visitors and professionality. We
remember fantastic productions such as 2 Origin, Arte, Full Moon, 9 Fingers
and ChaosLand0 at least. At the Party 4, lots of more great productions got
released. Who can ever forget 2 Nexus 7, Psycedelic, Motion, Soulkitchen and
Roots0 among many others?
In 1995 at the Party 5, the amazing production 2 Closer0 got out. Other good
productions released that Christmas were 2 Vision, Faktory and Dawn.0 But the
atmosphere had changed from the previous year, as so many groups went
silent after Christmas the year before. Also in 1996 The Party offered
some good productions, but actually not as good as the productions released
at the The Gathering, Assembly and Intel Outside parties earlier that year.
However, from this Christmas we should remember productions such as 2 Shaft
7, Makaveli and Endolymfa.0 Nevertheless, it was obvious that the Christmas
party was not as succesful as in the past. But still I think the sceners
had a wonderful christmastime.
At The Party 7 the sceners had to enjoy productions such as 2 My Kingdom,
Killer Automatique, Electroboy, Remix, Superautodrome, Deeppan, Wave and
Beer.0 The next Christmas, we got to see some more good productions in
2 Alien 2, XIII, Wildlife, Nebula, 1000% and The Morning Trip.0 At the Party
9, some of the last cool Christmas productions got released, among these
were 2 Concrete, Spellbound, Rain, I-Surf, Nonstop, Offbeat, Impossible and
Revision.0 After this year, the majority of the sceners decided to boycott
the Party. So at the Party 10 the only good productions were 2 Megademo
2000, J and Noisejesus.0 In 2001 at The Party 11, I guess the only quality
production released was 2 Dolphin Dreams.0
d LAST CHRISTMAS
Last Christmas was not a very good Christmas for us sceners. I dont think
any real Amiga production got released at the Party in Denmark - a party
which once was a great place for Amiga sceners and a party with a flow of
Amiga releases. So the Christmas time has changed from being the time a
year when sceners could expect lots of quality productions, to a time a
year with almost total silent.
d LONELY THIS CHRISTMAS
If you decide to go to a Christmas party this year, it's not going to be
The Party. For the first time in the history of the party-series, the
christmas party got cancelled! I guess you as an Amiga scener will be
lonely this Christmas. Gone are definately the times when about all active
sceners were gathered at various Christmas parties to demonstrate their
skills.
d HAPPY XMAS (WAR IS OVER)
If you despite of the fact that so few Amiga sceners will be present,
decide to visit a party, you could still manage to meet computers sceners.
Anyway, you'll most likely meet PC sceners. In the past there was almost a
war between Amiga and PC sceners. But now many of us have realized that
this is quite silly actually. It's possible to be creative on all
platforms, so by going to a computer event this Christmas you don't have to
fear not meeting friendly sceners... that is, PC sceners. I guess you'll
have a Happy Christmas time as the war between the various platforms is
over.
d I BELIEVE IN FATHER CHRISTMAS
I believe that the Amiga scene once again can manage to arrange good
Christmas parties and release many quality productions. We are facing
interesting times with 1 AmigaOne including OS4.0.0 Hopefully this machine
will manage to attract some new sceners and perhaps also some old ones.
Until then, we have to cherish our great sentimental moments. We all have
some enjoyful memories of the amazing Christmas parties and productions of
the past.
d MERRY XMAS EVERYBODY
At the present time we all have to salute Rumrunner for trying to give the
sceners something special to enjoy at Christmas, and I greet all other
active forces of the scene.
Be aware sceners, 2004 will hopefully be a turning point. Perhaps the
scene once again will be like an ocean of sceners, with love and devotion.
In any case, 2004 should be a great year for us all.
If you still haven't got the Christmas spirit.. then get the songs
mentioned in the headlines above. They'll change your state of mind.
It's Merry Christmas and everybody is having fun. Look to the future now,
it's only just begun...
