CD-ROM Informational Update
Updated Nov. 24, 1990
Games Market:
Sierra has announced its official format of the CD-ROM systems.
The systems will hopefully be avilable by March, 1991, and will carry
a retail price of roughly under 800 dollars. The package will include
a CD-ROM set, SoundBlaster, Sound Mixer, and a few CD-ROM games(NOT
KQ5, SQ4.. etc). The CD-ROM drive, according to Sierra, will be at least
500 ms in seeking time, hopefully will be 200 ms. The CD-ROM games will
be released in Spring of 1991. Extra information indicate that Sierra is
NOT going to use CD-AUDIO for ALL the music, instead, it will use the
SoundBlaster for Speech, maybe some music, and lots of music will come
from the PC Speaker, or via the Mixer. No other details are given.
Multi-Media/Inprovements upon CD-AUDIO:
CD-ROM Informational Storage Standards XA and DVI will soon replace
CD-AUDIO in the computer field because of their ability to store much more
data(As in picture and music) than the standard CD-AUDIO. Both of these are
VERY expensive, and they won't dominate the game market for a while.
