Demo reviews continue

MindMatterElectricity by Reason

This demo came 7th in the competition, and starts off with
RSN in a wave-effect. Then a very strange 3d object appears, which
really reminds me of a similar object in the old demo Muscles by
Impulse. At the same time there's also a line with strange signs
running. The effects are surrounded by a simple, but ok design.

Then the next screen appears. We have another line with strange signs
running in the left corner, while the main effect which looks like
some kind of flares in a special pattern, is in the middle of
the screen. Everything is surrounded by a similar style of design as
the first screen.

Afterwards, another massive glowing 3d object with linevectors
around, is rotating and transforming. Many things are happening in
one screen. There's also a line in the right with some more signs.
Of course there's design around everything.

The next screen is displaying another massive blue 3d object, which
looks like a nut/screw. It's rotating and dropping these small
bubbles in various sizes. At the bottom there's another of these
lines with signs.

Up next is another new design. We see numbers passing by in a line.
We get to see a star effect up right, and a massive bumpmapped 3d
object in various colours, left. It runs over a text showing
Reason at Mekka Symposium etc. And now another grey and glowing
object appears upper right. Its getting bigger before everything
fades out.

Another screen enters. We see sparkling blue lights, it's just like
cars are passing by with searchlights towards us. In addition
to that there's a smaller screen, which is a copy of the big screen,
going everywhere over the main screen. Afterwards a picture of a
woman is revelead.

Now a new design and a new screen appear. We see some signs in the
right, and then the credits in the left, in addition to some blue
light.

It continues with the name of the demo being displayed, a greetings
effect, the slogan of Reason and more.

Next up is a text saying you've reached the end of the demo, while
displaying a massive rotating and twisting 3d object dropping small
bubbles. It also says it's the end of the demo.

The final screen of the demo, is a landscape effect, and in front
of it, scenes from all the parts of the demo, and at the very end, a
scroller.

All in all, it's quite a good demo which got a good design, many nice
effects, and strange fitting electronic-style music. All effects are
jumping around to the music it seems.

Plan B by IRIS

This demo only managed to come 9th in the competition, but is quite
cute even though it's perhaps a bit short. It's also the last of the
more serious demos in the compo.

The demo begins with a picture of the back of a naked woman in the
left, and at the right side, the logo Plan B and the credits for the
demo. Then we get to see the special IRIS sign, which then moves
permanently to the bottom of the right corner while various changing
objects/patterns are being displayed. Then another small picture is
being shown, it's the face of a man, in the right bottom of the
screen. And from the bottom left, I-R-I-S, is getting shown with a
light effect over those letters. Then in the rest of the screen we
get to see various patterns which are being zoomed. The pattern
reminds me of old fractals, but isn't really.

Now follows alot of various big objects, which are rotating and
shaded in the screen, while the IRIS sign is still at the bottom of
the right corner. First out is a big foot spinning around, only
followed by an elephant, a bear and many many funny figures. Then
the greetings appear in a new screen. Afterwards we get to see
a kind of melting effect, it's like gele. At the end, we just see the
text "the end" with a small rotating teddy bear.

This is a bit oldskool demo, with really great music and some nice
effects. But it was too short to get a high position. And afterall,
it was Plan B, as the other demo from IRIS didn't get finished in
time.

In any case, the Mekka & Symposium party brought us many quality
demos, and some of them was definately among the best demos in 2002.
This time there were also 5 PPC demos, which again rises the debate
about fair competitions. But then again, Little Nell which won,
wasn't a PPC demo afterall. I didn't review the PPC demo New Dawn
Fades by Mawi, nor the 68ks Bubble 2 by Specter and Dølle Duck by
Apathy. The last two mentioned are fun-productions. The PPC demo
though was quite good. Well, the reviews are over... now taste
reality. Reading about a hamburger can never beat the feeling of
eating one! So go watch some demos from Mekka & Symposium 2002
when preparing for the Breakpoint party which will take place from
Friday 18.04.03 until Monday 21.04.03 in Bundeswehrdepot in
Bingen/Germany. It's about time to get ready to that party now... :-)
