BEHIND THE END OF THE WORLD

By Hardcore editorial

It happened... Hardcore #1 has been released and the first reactions
came. I admit that the articles in the first issue weren't of a satisfying
quality (at least not ALL of them), but considering the fact that the issue's
been rushed, I cannot be unhappy with the results.

Many people complained about certain drawbacks in the code but we did our
best to fix that bugs and improve the code.

We were also betrayed from some people from YU who PROMISED us some
articles and then dissapeared without a single trace of them...

As for the Scene articles, unfortunately Yugoslavia is BEHIND the end of
the world due to a certain blockade placed for reasons unknown to us who live
here, so my sources were shrinked into a couple of european disk-mags (ROM,
RAW, The Charts, etc.) which is not bad at all... Now, blockade is slowly
disapearing, so we hope everything will be better soon!

As you probably have noticed, Hardcore won't be released on monthly
basis. There are lots of reasons, but the most important ones are
highlighted in this article. We are not making a classic scene mag with lots
of articles about everything. We are trying to choose and put in here only
articles and guides a real hardcore scener needs. We think a lot before we
put some article in it...

Other thing you must have noticed is that hardcore publish lots of texts
that aren't written as support to our mag specifically. Since i (dominator)
browse a LOT through various nets and boards, i get so much interesting stuff
i'd like to share with all of you... But all of you must know the fact that
HardCore will never became doc-mag! We include just the most interesting
stuff we get that is useful for all of you out there...

We have a BIG apology for some articles that are outdated... This is due
to fact that this issue has been finished at the end of november, but we
stopped its release because Ripper suggested it would be better to release it
on tp5.... there are one or two articles that could be marked as outdated...
not more than that... Articles cover the whole period between 1st and 2nd
issue, and they all are last updated in the first week of December...

That's all from your editors for this issue... Enjoy the magazine...

TREND - QUITTING AMIGA
By sAfe

The Intel based computer sellers and propaganda machines have received
the news about CBM's that with great pleasure and like vultures imposed an
anti-amiga offensive. A Yugoslav journalist called Emin Smajic from one
issue to another of his magazine called "Svet Kompjutera" ("Computers world")
in his help-the-readers-make-the-correct-decision column writes that

"...to buy the Amiga is not the correct decision at this time, it would
be wiser if you'd buy a PC so you can play games 'till the rest of your life
because the Amiga is now officialy dead... etc."

Notice the use of words like correct, wiser, officialy dead... This man
is called a propaganda machine. I bet the PC magazines out there have
millions of people like Emin... I bet they clone them. SO EVERYONE OUT
THERE HAVING AN AMIGA MUST REMAIN CALM ON THESE STUPIDITIES!!! DON'T LET
ANYONE TELL YOU WHAT TO DO!

FREE YOUR FUCKING MIND!!!

...and buy Blizzard 1260...

SCENE STATUS
by DoMiNAToR

Using your computer for some time, you start asking yourself should you
go on as freelancer, join some group or even create a new one. Hereby i'll
try to give you a hand on that.

Freelance:

Freelance, in most cases, gives you the most freedom to choose amount of work
you want to do, how much time you'll spend and when you are in the best mood
to code, paint, make music or whatever you do with your computer. You are
the one to be contacted about any kind of work you are asked to do. And you
can easily say "no" 'cause yo're freelance ;>

But, in my opinion, this way of work has many disadvantages. First of all,
you are forced to obtain software and keep contacts all by yourself, losing
precious time you can spend better (like getting drunk or getting laid...).
Some freelancers spend too much time with non-sceners, and soon they're
becoming non-sceners too. They become lazy when it comes to scene work.
They become asking theirselves "What's the point?" and soon they quit. Of
course, these are usual situations that occurs here in YU, it may be
different in your country but it's most likely that same shit happens
there...

Group member:

When computer artist joins some group, he gets many advantages. First of
all, software arives from the group swappers and traders, no more infinite
leeching with 2400 when trader uses high-tech modem. Artist gets more time
to write letters to contacts about music, gfx, code or whatever he does.

Group has it's organiser who follows the happenings on both domestic and
world scene and knows when and how to act! His only job is to listen to the
scene beats and act fast! Again, artists have more free time to spend!

Actually, what's great in group work is job split - everyone know whats his
task and do it the best he can. That way, final product is far more better
than one-man production.

Creating your own group:

When it comes to group creation, there is one important thing you must
remember that FRIENDSHIP RULES! If you have members that don't like each
other, better drop them in order to prevent it spreading through the other
group mates. It can easily destroy the whole group and split it into two
enemy sides, so watch out! All of you must like each other, that's the only
way our group will survive!

ACID TRIP PICTURE - WHAT?
By sAfe

Well people, I'm afraid that my world collapsed two times in the past
years. The first collapse came to me just after the great Saturne party
1994. It brought us excellent contributions from several groups, but one
production jumped out in front of others because of its sickness and
originality...

Yeah!!! It was "Acid Trip" by the famous Melon Dezign. It got very
high between other much better coded demos because of its SUPERB picture
called, errrrrm, let's say just "Acid Trip".

Soon after that release this picture came to me as a finished party
contribution with some very nasty words pointed against one of the Europe's
finest graphicians, namely Ra/Sanity. That's where the things exploded...

Annoyed by those ignorant, egotistical words, I started my own litle
private investigation because that picture looked surprisingly familiar in
all its beauty, and finally I found out the truth behind it...

The truth came from the American magazine called Details where I found
an article about an excellent artist called Robert Williams...
Some of his works were exhibited on that very page and ONE of them really
shocked me... The name of that picture is "In the Land of Retinal Delights",
and it was done in 1968. So, I have a little message for those two pathetic
characters, Mack & WalT9

WHAT, YOU DIDN'T HAVE A COLOUR SCANNER?

P.S. The magazines date is July 1993.

SELLING THE SCENE - READ NOW!
By Neurodancer/ABYSS

Hello dear sceners...

This is Neurodancer/ABYSS writing. And this time I'm telling you that
AMINET SUXX BIG TIME! No, not mainly because some idiots put every piece of
Aminet crap onto scene related BBS, BUT because some even bigger idiots put
scene related stuff like demos etc. onto the Aminet!

Say, do you really think its cool if you trade like hell to get the
latest ASM95 demos, because demos are nearly all thats left of the scene,
just to see that EVERY BULLSHIT LAMER that has *nothing*, repeat *nothing* do
to with the scene at all and even worse makes childish jokes about every real
elite dude (Just read some of the german network area's in T-Netz and Z-Netz
or FRAS to get those whimps opinions!) can D/L it some days later from his
local Proletheus/Ankotz or whatever assfuck childish BBS with Aminet support,
just because the pay the phukking Sysop some bucks?!?

Hey! Once scene was an insider thing, closed to those lamers, and
nowaday we're giving them ALL thats left of the real scene, namely the demos,
just to demolish the last part of our own computer subculture? This can't be
right, and this ISN'T right! Aminet has *nothing* to do with scene in
general, Aminet is PD only, and scene has *nothing* to do with Aminet and PD
only! Get real, dudes! Stop upping every piece of scene stuff onto the
Aminet! The dudes who get it there don't give a damn on whether you wanna
reach a bigger audience, and they give a damn on your reputation because all
that counts in their lame world are REALNAMES and PD stuff and their latest
evaluation copy of Pampers Boy & Girl.

I don't say that I don't like the way useful public tools get spread via
Aminet. I just say: Scene != Aminet and Aminet != Scene. You give the
dudes that laugh at you the stuff you really sweat for. This can't be all...
or is it really time to quit the scene, because there's only childish whimps
left whose most important thing in the world is their degree of coolness,
pseudo-elite style junk that is too selfish for any friendship? Reputation
and money, thats the two things that rule the scene of today, I fear...
releasing demos only at parties because of the prices. Releasing fakes just
because of this <we were first> attitude. Talking shit about others who you
don't know at all. 14 year old kids that call themselver "leader" of a bunch
of trading lamers. Selling CC's and stuff to any fucking lamer because of
the money. Upping demos to Aminet for a bigger audience and reputation.

SELLING THE SCENE, THATS WHAT IT IS!

I'm open to any discussion, just email me at neurodancer@highvolt.gun.de

C'ya all in a better scene?

HOODLUM - NEW AGE
by sAfe

Do you remember that name? Well, unless you are one of those pathetic
anti-modem scene weasels, then you probably don't have the slightest idea
what the fuck is Safe rambling about this time... Well, I'm talking CHRYSEIS
of HOODLUM...

Everyone remembers, knows & respects the gang called Virtual Dreams.
They are as you probably know Fairlight's demo section. Well, Chryseis is
for Hoodlum exactly the same Virtual Dreams are for FLT...

The real question is -

ARE THEY AS COOL AS THE LUNATICS NUMERO UNO (VD)?

Let's try to answer that. I now have some prods. from them (note that
these are probably their first prouctions for Hoodlum), and I have some pld
stuff from VD's early days. Being present on the scene for quite a while, I
AM familiar with standards back then and today.

VD's "Illusination" was really a nice prod. it jacked Tsunami sky-hi to
the stairway to heaven called Eurocharts. Even he has to admit it, it wasn't
so good, but it brought old routines in a new fashion.

CHY's "Water Whisper" is on the other hand something a bit different.
While "Illusination" had excellent pixels, fine soundtrack (nothing
revolutionary, though) "W.Whisper" has excellent >LOGOS< done by the greatest
logo-maker alive - Angeldawn and a totally ridiculuos soundtrack which would
probably be ranked from my fellow editors as "shitty, ugly, and all in all -
very bad"... I like it...

A review of it's code would fit in one word: Water.

That these guys try VERY hard to be original you can see in ROSE, their
Somewhere in Holland '95. contribution. What can I say. Cool, great,
bitchy, but I'm not jerking it off... (Close, close...)

For all those who haven't seen it... It's a rose.

Final words - expect chart toppers, and (99% posibility) a new Virtual
Dreams.

No more.

DO YOU CARE ABOUT THE STATE OF THE SCENE?
By Zone / Nerve Axis

The UK scene is, as we all know in a reet'old state and no mistakin, but why
? Only 2 years ago the scene was a bubblin lava pot of high octane activity,
groups sprouted overnight, sure enough they died soon after but they tried to
make their mark on the scene. That in effect was enough to fuel the scene
fire's, that effort was all that was needed.

Look around, ya dont see owt like that n'more !!

At the mo the UK scene has become a disorganised animal intent on eating
itself whole !! There are survivors who still peck at the bloodless carcuss
of the UK scene, they know who they are, and slowly but surely these
individuals are injecting new life back into the scene.

Groups that we've known as household names have become unattached,
un-hinged. They sit and squabble instead of using their ability to get back
on the side of the Amiga. Yeah, sure we can all fall back on the fact that
Commodore went belly up and use that as a piss poor excuse. But thats all it
is, an EXCUSE !! Yeah, the demise of boxing put everyone back a bit, but I'm
sure that PIRACY isnt the backbone on which the UK scene leans upon. It
leans upon those individuals who create the groups who create the products,
its to those people who get the most respect.

Now I mentioned the household names earlier, they were relied upon,
trusted and sought after. But if ya take that away then those who aspire to
become as good as their mentors dizzy themselves in ever decreasing circles
of confusion !! They have nothing to aim for, no goal at the end. Sure as
shit stinks, everyone wanted to be the UK's number 1 group, some groups still
do. But where has the spark of ingenuity gone ??

Here's the dirty plug.

NERVE AXIS was created back in early 92, they've gone through some
fevered times but the guys who've rallied around that name are excellently
talented individuals who hold a passion for the Amiga, not for fame as most
people do. Just to sit and enjoy the machine, make the machine get up and
fuckin dance. We meet at rallies in the UK, and when did you see a group
that enjoyed each others company ?? Thats what binds us together;
organisation, friendship, talent and a bloody large amount of optamism for
the UK scene.

Now I mentioned the word 'Friendship', the word that was repeated in all
text files a couple of years ago, in all adverts in many magazines.
Me'thinks that word needs to be dusted off and preached again If we're to
turn this UK scene around...

'But there's no focal point ?'. Yup thats right, UK diskmags are non-
existent so where do we go from here.

Prepare yourself for serious PRESSURE !!

A STYLE OF IT'S OWN
By sAfe

RAW #8 gave us an article by Hollywood / Axis about the East european
demo style. Yugoslavia is partly located in that part of Europe so someone
uninformed would think that the same thing goes for it as for the rest
East-europeans... BUT!!!

Graphics:

It is not by any chance Uno, Facet or anyone else alike... It goes from
extreme, crazy & great designed pixels by n0pe dope to calm, harmonic, deep
paintings by Safe (these are NOT my words). There are absolutely no
copy-machines, and I hope that there will never be any. Once I tried to copy
a picture, and I finally succeded after several weeks of hard work. It
looked almost exactly as on the paper, but a lot more colourful... Sadly,
the picture was DEAD, and I hated it for all thetime I spent on it, so, I
deleted it... Didn't copy a pixel since... I'll never try THAT again...
Too much for too less...

Music:

Only 5-10 musicians work hard, and each with a style of it's own. No
general trend is current, and everyone keeps pulling on his side. The
contrast between DoMiNAToR's Hardcore & Oxyd's melting style shows it all...

Code:

Ha... Code... Everyone has a "Hole in the wall", and ours is exactly on
this spot. We have excellent coders who might even beat names like Chaos or
even Ghengis, but they always have to be forced to work... And when they do
something, they don't give their best because they were forced to do it,
which puts us in an infinite loop... You probably won't see anything well
coded from this part of Europe, at least until we find a way to visit a
party. Money is a great motive for anybody. One coder in particulary is on
my mind... (Hi Wiz!)
I have to notice that a PC coder, Firewalker / United Artists impressed
everyone on the Assembly '94. , and that was the first bigger party where
the Yugoslavs showed up...

Swapping:

Two and a half swappers. ACiD, Dialer / D-Version Team, and Grunf /
exteNs. The latter one has just a few contacts, Dialer was off his guard for
a while (he's coming back) so ACiD is left as the only one able to do
something useful...

Modem trade:

Well, here's something in what we are good at! Names like Snake&Delboy
or iNfusioN / CoRRoSioN are not unknown in the European trading community.
Snake was for a while among the top five in Hydra, he managed his way to the
famous Prestige gang and keeps going forward... iNfusioN's REAL power will
show when those miserable little fuckers called United Nations finally eat
what they spit and lift off these fucking sanctions off our backs...

A SMALL PARTYREPORT FROM ASSEMBLY 1995
by Paperboy / Mobile

Ok, my friends now I`m back from Assembly. The last day of my
summerholidays and I`ll spend it by checking out all the wares I got from
Assembly. I DON`T HAVE all the wares, because they weren`t spreaded so well.
Anyway I`m planning to visit Splatterhead and get the best demos there. I
will now send you all the intros and a slide show from Abyss. Dudes, who
swap with more than two disks will get something else (demos) this time. I
tried to do a new issue of Sleeping Pack, but I couldn`t get it working.
There is some problem with the menu. It doesn`t work. Or maybe I did
something wrong. I haven`t done any packs in a half a year as you know.
Well maybe I can get it working later. Now it`s time to start writing my
report.

On the Assembly 94 everything was delayed and organising was lame. I was
hopeful to see a better party this time. On Asm94 many groups released some
awesome demos and intros so I was hoping see something cool this time too.

As I began my trip the first news was that the train was runnning 15
minutes late (that was a sign about the upcoming). Nothing that`s connected
with Assembly can`t be on it`s time. As I came to the party place, which was
easy to find like organisers told, there was already about 500 people waiting
before doors. Assembly was supposed to begin at 10.00, but the doors were
opened just before 11. This year Assembly was kept in 4 days, which is lame,
because competitions had a really long pauses between each other. The
fooding service was there, but it was really expensive. The good thing this
year was the Sleeping hall. It was a large room and it was silence there.
Good place to sleep.

The first day didn`t have any competitions. We just played games like
Sensible Golf/Soccer, Gloom and we watched latest demos... went to take a
walk at the town. I talked with all my contacts I could find. Many of my
finnish contacts were there, but the only foreign contact I could find was
Toxic/Abyss and we had a long nice talk. (Where were you?) The second day
had C64 competitions, which showed that the scene on C64 is not the same as
it was last year. There were ofcourse some cool products, but the overall
view left to me is that C64 had worse compos than last year. Stll I think
C64 rules!

On the third day there were intro, Music and Gfx competitions on both PC
and Amiga. I got bored, because all I was able to see were some fuckin
gourauds. Every intro had gourauds flying, except some real lame intros,
which would have done great position on the Assembly 92 I guess. PC and
Amiga had exactly the same effects. Nothing new was invented and people were
bored.

The final day had Amiga and PC demo competitions and Animation
competition. Amiga and PC demos had some really boring gourauds. Eveyone
had them. The best demos on Amiga were from Parallax, Pygmy, Stellar,
Fanatic and Silents. PC demos are not worth to mention here. PC had same
effects as Amiga and maybe they looked better than on Aimga, but I got bored
with them. Animation compo was cool. I wonder who keeps these animations on
his HD. For instance the animation by Jaco/Virtual Dreams (made on Amiga)
needs 1,8 Gb of free space. Some crazy dude like Splatterhead/Scoopex would
propably download it from some BBS if it is possible.

I don`t have any results to show here, sorry, the prize giving ceremony
was delayed and I had a train to catch. When I came home I had a long nice
sleep and I could still see gourauds in front of my eyes. Overall opinion:
This was lamer than Asm94 and I`m not sure if I go there next time. All
compos were delayed and products had nothing new to show. There were a lot
of lamers, who had nothing to do with scene. I read from a newspaper that
there were 12500 visitors to Fair centre during this weekend. That`s too
much and 4 days is too long. 3 days would have been enough. I won`t write
any more about this shit now as I`m in a hurry (like always) and you are
propably bored to read this.

INTEL OUTSiDE II SHORT PARTY-REPORT
By AwEsoN/iLLUSiON !!

Well, where should I startup with this party-report - maybe I should tell you
first what I think in general about this first party I have visited in
Poland, yet !! IT WAS REALLY GREAT !! Why ?!?

I think nearly all guys from the polish scene showed up at the party- place;
this means that about thousand people visited this party which was a surprise
for me (and maybe even for the organizers) - I did not expect that many
people to be at the party. When I went to the party, I was a little bit
affraid if all people would talk polish all the time and that I would be
bored to death because I only would have the chance to speak to a few guys in
english. But when I arrived at the party-location, a friend of mine
(STAN/iLS) introduced me to some of his friends, and when they heard that I
was from Germany, they star- ted to talk to me in english. I was surprised
that all guys were very friendly: They came to me, shook hands with me,
introduced themselves and started to chat with me about scene and real-life.
In fact, there was really nobody, who seemed to be an arrogant and "so elite"
guy, and I have really talked to many guys from many groups - really fa- mous
and unknown sceners but really nobody was unfriendly. I think that this is
not too "normal" for scene-parties; on other parties there are these really
"elite" guys, you are not allowed to talk to, because they are really "much
too elite" (btw: I wonder why most of these arrogant people from the scene
are swappers, traders or sysops; what can THEY be proud of ??).

Another great thing were the productions, which were presented at the big
screen. Just have a look at the demos - the time when everybody laughed
about polish productions is really over now. And also keep in mind, that the
prices were really low: 400 DM (not even 300$) for the first position of the
demo-competition; that means that polish groups still do demos for having fun
and for keeping the scene alive and not for earning much money (another
example about what polish sceners think about producing anything just to earn
the money from the compe- titions is DREAMER - the polish guys like his music
but they will not vote for any of his modules because DREAMER just wants to
earn the money from the compos !! (btw: This is what I have heard about
DREA- MER !!).

Of course, there were not only nice and cool things about the party:

-There was only a very small door at the entrance so it took a really long
time to get all people into the building.

-The main-hall was a little bit too small, or maybe the organizers should
have build up another big-screen out of the main-hall, be- cause it was
really too crowded in the mainhall while the compos were running.

-All screen-informations, vote-sheets, etc. were in polish.

These is all bad points about the party - the rest of the party was really
great fun: MANGA-films in a seperate room all the time, demos (old and new
ones) were shown at the big-screen between the compos, a RAVE-party including
a live-act and a striptease-girl, talking, boo- zing and just having a great
time !!

So, why did I write this party-report then ?! Well, as far as I know, I was
the only guy at the party, who could not speak polish and I think that most
european sceners just did not know what they could expect from such a polish
party and therefore they did not want to spend money for the journey, etc.
But I can tell you - you really missed a party, which was completely
different (somehow), which was more fun (for sure) than any other party I
have visited yet (this in- cludes THE PARTY 4, too !!) and therefore I want
to ask more sceners from foreign countries to visit such a big polish party,
simply be- cause it is really worth it !! But please, only dudes who want to
have fun and who are not arrogant - at least I think that the polish sceners
are not interested in talking to "so elite" guys !!

A last sentance: There was fun, friendship and great demos, which were
really done for the fun of it -

THE POLISH SCENE IS STILL AT THE ROOTS !!!

INTEL OUTSIDE 2 - GRAPHICS COMPO
By sAfe

Pushed with the very high quality of the pictures from this party, I
decided to do a small picture review of the first, second and the third
place.

3rd place: Lazur/NAH COLOR/TRSI

The picture is called Gimenez. It represents female in a space-suit with
a nice little gun in her hands, completely surrounded by alien life forms,
all starving for human meat (or not? Maybe they want something which brings
much more pleasure...).

The picture is a real masterpiece, Lazur really did a fine job on this
one. The technique implemented is somewhat old, with the square dithering
method which is ok in the Hi Res paintings such as Gimenez.

The only flaw of this picture is that it is probably not original, but on
the other hand - who gives a fuck about that!!!

2nd place: Yoga/Mystic

This is a very undeserved 2nd place. I can name at least seven picture
with more potential, but, Yoga was lucky...

It represents a, well, a shaman I suppose (at least its the name of this
work). What bothers me the most is Yoga's punyness when it comes to sharp
images. The whole picture is cloudy, the face looks as it was stolen from
the Z-production comics, the hair (if it was hair) is done in a funny, yet
ridiculous way... It is very straw like, and I don't like it...

1st place: Rygar

Wow... This is the most original, best techniqued picture I've seen for
a long, long time...

This is, ladies and gentlemen, an OIL painting completely done on
Amiga... If I was there, I would vote for it. It represents a calm scenery,
a forest on the right, and a lake on the left.

I define this painting as Tower in oil (remember the old Psygnosis
master?). The only not-so-big drawback of this artwork are the clouds... He
probably wanted them that way, but I find them a little bit strangely
coloured.

oK. again a party parallel to Computer 95` mass in cologne/ger. This time
the party was organized by DCN-Decision and started at 19:00 pm on Saturday
1o.11.95'. Some interesting group members and VIP`s arrived at the party,
like Gravenreuth (hehehe ... very happy about his razia at the Computer 95`
mass, PSG-Prestige, Trsi, Ethic, Animators (next time try to be a little bit
more cultivated), DCN-Desicion, TAI-TUW & Infection, TCE-THE Chase, MOTION
(special Bilbo Baggins), Inter Active and some more (Ihave missed da
PDY-Prodigy people ?!). Also Amiga Technologie was there and told something
about the future of the Amiga and that every Amiga will get an PC Processor
in the future (nothing was said about the Risc Processor!?!) The Competition
was not so kewl as we have hoped. 16 mods and ONLY 2 demos have been played
and 10 pictures shown. I personaly think that only 4 Mods were good and 2-3
Pics nice and the Demos.....hehehe very old effects, nothing new. You will
get the results with the demos and Musix next time, but i think it`s not a
loss, not to get this Disks. The prices for entry (15,-DM) were to expensive
and i hope that the next Party in "Hamburg" will be a little bit better!.

p.s.: please forgive me my mistakes, but i had not enough time for this TXT.

WHY DO I HATE ME & YU?
From sAfe for sAfe & YU
(Legend: YU - Yugoslavia)

'Cause...

- I suck...

- I'm writing this text...

- My group mate is in the army...

- I can't force anybody to work something for HC...

- I listen to several different music styles at once (techno, industrial,
hardcore...).

- I'm so persistant and even though I want to start something, something
obviously doesn't want to be started, and I'm still trying to push the things
a little bit...

- I worked my ass off on HC #1, and all that wasn't enough for AT LEAST ONE
MAN IN THIS STINKING COUNTRY TO TELL ME HOW HE LIKED/HATED IT!!! I virtually
had to call the so-called YU sceners and rip the words out of their throats
with quenches!!!

- YU stinks.

- Sn. stinks.

- Sn. is a diesel-fuckin-boy...

- Everyone else in YU who complained on HC are just plain motherfuckers who
only know how to pour shit everywhere around them... Do you think THEY'LL
ever do something EVEN CLOSE to Hardcore? NO-FUCKING-CHANCE!!!

- Kids from some anonymous group come to me as if they are the world legends
of the scene, but they really suck...

VERY IMPORTANT:

- Noone here is interested in joining the world coding trends...

- YU coders think of themselves as they were underrated, but the whole truth
is that they find it boring to evolve on (as coders)...

- It put the most intelligent coder of them all in the army far away from
Belgrade...

- I suck big way, but all the other YU motherfuckers suck in ENORMOUS way!!!

CORROSION

(I chosed my own group for the opening of this season. For all those who
didn't know it, CoRRoSioN is an urban group with ALL the members resident in
the Yugoslav capital Belgrade. Its history is given in a separate text in
this issue of Hardcore, so - no more bullshit and let's get down to work!!!)

Coders:
Arhimed(PC), Phantom Lord(PC), Suffocator(Amiga)

CoRRoSioN's PC coding force is probably among the best one's down here.
Unfortunatelly Arhimed who is an awesome coder moved for a while to Nis (a
city about 200Km away from Belgrade) and we lost every contact with him...
He keeps on showing on various places but cannot be caught to do some work.
Phl on the other hand works his ass off on the other type of coding which is,
errrm, not permited from all the governments in the world. He really doesn't
want to interfere with the scene and really likes what he is doing,

which
leaves Suffocator alone in his coding... But! Suff's a really great
potential and a totally crazy coder, but, he's in the Army... And is not
coming out untill the end of December. So... We virtually have no coders.
I am right now chasing one guy to join us, but his name will remain secret.

Graphics:
Griffin, Gyro, Safe, Q, Carlos

The first two guys are Ray-Tracers. I am what I am. Gyro doesn't have an
Amiga anymore so he turned to something what he really does good...
Hardware! He's a hardware genious and there's no doubt about that. He
returns to Ray-Tracing once in a while, but it's not as it used to be...
Griffin does have an Amiga and has done some excellent animations who are
unfortunatelly not usable in demos, but we'll use them in DoMiNAToR's future
videos. Safe, or if you would like it better this way - I, am the only two
dimensional graphician and I know my work. This layout's mine, HC #1 title
picture is mine, but due to coder-crash I have a lot of unreleased work
laying around. Check CRS's future productions - i'll be there! Oh yeah...
Q. I didn't know where to put him, so I put him here... His main
preocupation is hardware, and like Gyro, he sticks to it (apart from doing
nothing...). Finally, Carlos is our newcomer artist soon to become famous.
Interested in 2D graphics, he has a lot of chance soon to become main
graphician along with Safe... Watch out for his work, it will be released
very soon...

Music:
DoMiNAToR, Paranoid, Safe(again)

THIS is where we're the best in Yugoslavia (that's NO lie!). DoMiNAToR is
THE Yugoslav techno musician. He stopped releasing "scene music" long ago
because of very nasty habit of other yugoslav musicians to take his modules
and play them everywhere as their own ones. So he turned to the real sound.
4 concerts are a proof of his worthyness!

Paranoid is mad.

I make all kinds of music. Mostly techno and ambient.

Swapping/Modem:
iNfusioN

Well, iNfusion does a very fine work in his area. unfortunatelly due to the
economic sanctions, he cannot make longer toll-free calls to the west. But,
he helpes me quite a lot and I keep some of my contacts over his USR...

Organising:
DoMiNAToR

This unquestionable is the most easyest organising ever! All the members in
one city, all of them knowing each others for ages => DoMiNAToR has an easy
job on this one!

Overall:

JUICE

Coders:
Kozmo(Amiga)

Kozmo had become popular here with the release of a small Juice borntro
called 15 meters of wire. He coded there a 1991. wireframe-morphing
equilizers which looked okay... But, man, it was 1994!!! But, alas, many
Yugoslav lamers saw that intro & said - "WOW!!! He is the best coder on our
livade a i shire" (some day I'll probably tell you, non-Yugoslavs what does
that second-time-mentioned phrase means)... I said, "Wow, some day he'll be
as good as the guys behind Windows 95."

Graphics:
Pain(DPaint2), Osone(DPaint3)

See, they still didn't reach the De Luxe Paint IV... Therefore, no
comment... NOT! Pain really is not so good, but Osone was a nice surprise
for me. He is the oldest graphician here and has a great talent which is
shown on all of his works. Although his style is a little bit messy, I
approve it because I think that noone can tell you how to do your work...

Music:
Pain, Osone

These two guys are the weirdest pair down here. Pain still thinks that
2(Un)limited make techno (hahahahaha), while Osone finds it amusing to sample
THE WHOLE SONGS from various groups in 3-5 samples and release that
everywhere... I personally like Enigma, but PLEASE!!! Will someone please
decribe him how to use the CIA timing?

Swapping/Modem:
Pain, Osone

Only modem. Though they can be found on some boards outside (? -
DoMiNAToR), they don't know what trading really is... They still thinks that
it is some great green pest from mars who will make their new game be sold in
10 times smaller amounts than usual (which is zero)...

Overall:

We were too hard on them... NOT! Truth sometimes hurts... They are,
actually, pretty busy with making a commercial game which puts them miles
away from the scene, but they manage to tangle on some other groups and
release their work (Osone especially)... An interesting group, who still
didn't reach its maximum power. And probably never will...

D-VERSION TEAM

As Gilletes, this is also a highly specialized group. They are both
swappers...

So, this will be a short one...

Swapping/Modem:
Acid, Dialer

Well, I'm no swapper, but I think I can recognize a good one when I see
him... And Acid IS! He has contacts all over Europe, some of them are
famous faces (Hi Ripper!) and some of them will be some day... What is
important for Acid is that he is addicted to swapping and will remain the
best south-east European swapper for a long, long time... Dialr used to be
as good as Acid, but he had a great "vacation" so it will take him a long
time to reestablish his contacts... I spotted his addie in The Charts 15, so
a message for him from the CoRRoSioN gang: "Welcome back, mate!"

Overall:

YU scene would probably remain unnoticed if they never existed. So,
D-Version Team is among the most important groups on these spaces.

GILLETES

This was a bit "hard" for writing because there are exactly 3 members of this
group (not millions...). All coders, so here we go:

Coders:
Haralampie, Grunf, Senzor(all Amiga coders)

Haralampie is the most known and one of the best coders in Yugoslavia. He
was a member of all the major YU groups (except DDC), and also one of the US
posse. Unfortunatelly, from reasons unknown to us, he decided to quit
everything and form this group. The Gilletes concept is rather weird, but it
seems that these guys know what they are doing. I "smelled" some new intros
and a, what it seems, file demo coming Scenes way. They can't be bad with
these guys behind them. Grunf is a former Extens member (such as Senzor),
who decided to leave his group because of certain misunderstandings with the
only one left there - Nozze. They both are fine coders and I hope that he
will release some good work...

Overall:

Check under coders...

NO-DUTY INTERVIEW WITH SENSOR/GILLETES
by Grunf/Gilletes

Place: Grunf's room, date 26/6/1995, about 7:00 pm.

g: Tell us yours real name, handle and describe how you are looking.

j: First things first... my name is Ivan, my handle is Sensor. I'm coder
in a group called Gilletes. I'm tall, pretty tall but not much weight, I
wear short hair. I like everything young people do...

g: Table-scarws?

j: ...absolutley! Posters, badges, and I'm answering on all letters.
Picture isn't necesarry.

g: Since when you are working on the YU scene?

j: Well, I'm working with Amiga since 29/12/1989 precisely. And scene... I
don't know. It was about 22/8/1992 when we, as a group, made our first
intro, and that day can be taken for our becoming 'in' the scene (he talks
about his previous group - exteNs -ed.). Without mentioning that we had
crack about a million small intros before that day. Today I have A1200 with
a 120Mb HD.

g: Tell me something about YU coders. From people you know, what do you
think: where can you put yourself, and what do you think about them?

j: I, actually, know just two coders in YU, Haralampie and grunf.

g: Who is Haralampie?

j: Haralampie is a man from US, ex Dexy. I really respect him, he is my
idol! I love him, and often, send him back home(?). If I need something, I
just ask him nice and he tell me everything I want to know. Sometime I am
really boring, so he has to give me a source code. I also admire Kozmo
(Kozmo/ Juice). What I saw, it looks very impressive. And about the
others... I don't know. From a group Corrosion, I've saw some intros but
that was very bad in all ways. Their earlier intros won't work on AGA
machines, absolute adress coding and similiar, maybe boys know to work but
didn't show that. I like Pas Maters, they are 100% crazy!

g: And some coder from the outside? Do you have somebody you like the most?

j: Not from a coders side. I like impressive effects, but I rarely remember
their, coders, names. My remembrance is more turned to a musicians. There
are also good graphicians, but music is the first.

g: Right now, you are working on something?

j: Yes, I'm studing on Mathematics University in Belgrade.

g: O.K.... Beside that, and beside that you are looking for a girlfriend,
what else?

j: Well, yes... I'm looking for a girlfriend if she is from 16 to 20, she
must be tall brinette, slim... Coding? Right now, I am working on...

g: I exactly know that you are messed up with some code, you just have to
tell our readers about it.

j: ...I know, that you know, that I'm working on something. I'm doing one
'not for a public code' it's more commercial and it has nothing with the
scene. And other code is one small intro and I need two months to finish it,
becouse I also have to learn something for my studings. And, unfortunately,
I have to remove my computer from a desk. Nothing more about that, just to
mention that it will work on A500.

g: Do you know for what disk-mag I'm taking this interview with you?

j: I can guess it's for Hard Core.

g: ...Correct. Have you saw the first issue of Hard Core? What do you
think about it?

j: For the first issue, it looks sympathic. Code could be a little, well
not just a little, bit better; text displaying is extremly slow. I can guess
that it was worked over with the system routines and I support that. It's
pitty becouse there is so little articles...

g: And what do you think about them? Is it good to taking others texts, or
they should try to write their own texts?

j: There is no need to taking articles from other mags. Sooner or later we
will read the original article in some foreign mag, and that has no point.

g: Let's change the subject. Contacts...

j: Well, I have whole one ctc. That guy is from France...

g: You want to greet him this time?

j: Yes, why not! Hi SUICYCO!

g: I won't ask you more about the scene. What else you are doing, except
going to the school and other usuall thing?

j: Well, I love my self only. (that's name of a song) It's one of my fave
songs. Grunf knows about it, becouse we had sang it together, you remember?

g: Yes...

j: I also like to ride a bike...

g: You have a good bike?

j: ...nothing special, but it roles! It has ten (wow!) speeds and it goes
very fast. Some days ago, I had a small accident, crash into the dirty-water
square hole in the ground (shaht). I don't have much time for a fun. Beside
my bike, I like to skate in the Ice hall 'Pioneer', but it's closed now 'coz
it's summer. My big love is volleyball, but I never got real chance to play
it; and golf. I have try all golf simulators which I can get, and I like PGA
the most.

g: And about games, is it true that some games crack down one project in
your group?

j: Yes, we were working on some BIG production and it was already announced
in the Corrosion news 3 and almost finished. Somehow, becouse of Reunion and
Galaga syndrom, it never floats up!

g: About your this summer holidays, do you planning to go to the sea?

j: No, I have to learn and I don't have 'time' to go there. (time=money)

g: You are traveling every day to your University, to Belgrade?

j: Every time I have some classes, I must to travel for a long time. The
only thing I like in Belgrade are it's female citizens, ice hall and
Kalemegdan. And the bus number 16, at about 10 pm.

g: Do you have some vehicle, I mean car?

j: Yes... I have my 'Red Ferrari' and it's actually isn't mine, it belongs
to my dad. It's 'Wolksvagen 1200 J'; old as same as I am. Did I tell how
old am I?

g: No.

j: I'm about 19.8.

g: Tell us the date.

j: What date? Ahh, the date is 16/8/1975. And for my 19th birthday, my car
got a new engine, just 7 years old! Now it goes about 130 km/h.

g: Which music do you prefere?

j: From foreign groups, I'm listening Dire Strates and Roxette; and from YU
groups, I like Riblju Corbu (kako ovo da prevedem?) and Djordja Balasevica.
I also like new dance music.

g: What about turbo-folk?

j: It's important that I like to watch turbo-folk. It is big difference
between listening and watching turbo-folk. When you are watching it, you do
that with a shutted TV and you are watching only the female singers (with the
hand in the pants?). All in all, Gala is my fave one!

g: That Gala... is she some cool chick?

j: Well she is blonde, and I more like brinettes. No, I don't like blonds,
but I saw some nice ones. And my girl, in the future, has to have lovely
eyes...

g: And deep throat, hahaha...

j: ...Yes, deep...

g: I don't know what else to ask you. Do you want to add something at the
end of this interview?

j: No, nothing more. Vote for me!

g: Do you want to tell your address, somebody will maybe write to you.

j: Yes... you could write to Ivan Romanic, R. Burdzevica 3/1, 26000
Pancevo, Yugoslavia. Young ladies should call also! I'm baby-sitting female
children from 16 to 28...

g: O.K. then. Thanx for this conversation...

j: Any time you need. Just one more sentence. I saw it in one, I think,
Flash Megademo III. It goes like: 'Stay cool, act cool..."

g: 'Your is the pride?!'

j: 'Your is the pride!'

That's it! I hope you enjoy this interview and that my bad english didn't
make you sick. See ya!

Asking a simple question "What do you do first when you wake up?" would

I would, 'cause I know the man :

D: yeah?

HC: Yo! Are you awake?

D: what do you think?

HC: OK, OK...

D: Did YOU call early this morning??

HC: Well...

D: Are you nuts? What are you doing awake at 9 ?

HC: I couldn't sleep.... Never mind, sorry...

D: You should be, but who cares...

HC: So, are we gonna do the interview?

D: listen man, who needs the dull, boring interview with me?

HC: You never know... Informations about you known to public are pretty
confusing. They can easily create false picture about you.

D: ok, ok, you need it because you lack some real articles...

HC: Well, generally it's true, but that's not my fault... I can't write
complete magazine on my own. You are still in the army, all the others
developed new skill known as "making up reasons".

D: but you still wanna go trough all of this?

HC: There were many positive reactions caused by the first issue, I think we
must continue.

D: ok, but we can't make it every month.

HC: Not now, but future days will hopefully make it happen, or improve at
least...

D: I don't want to talk much about myself.

HC: Just do it your way.

D: ok... what do you want to know?

HC: Skipping meaningless questions, let's hear some real stuff from you.
Why do you love Amiga that much?

D: because she gives me the most pleasure I've ever experienced using
different computers. she has creative speed, which means that Amiga fits on
the throne when talking about computer art in all forms: music, 2d and 3d
graphics, incredible coding possibilities... all easily combined and packed
together as the ultimate multimedia. some guy once said "Amiga create
routines, other ones just copy them" and he was damn right!

HC: So, you hate PC?

D: there's absolutelly no need to hate it. it's so stupid that it'll die
itself. PC is industrial machine - which means commercial. and commercial
stuff of any kind sux! it goes to music - it goes to computers as well.

HC: Yeah! We could say "Free your mind - Use Amiga!"

D: I just hope escom will give her a nice rebirth. I am one of the hardest
supporters around here, you know....

HC: Everyone knows...

D: that's right! few weeks ago one guy brought his A1200 on TV and burried
Windows'95 in just a few words comparing it to Workbench 3.0. hey man, WB
3.0 was developed in 1992! 3 years ago! who dares to tell me PC is better,
has better programs and all that shit??? PC is just an expensive game
console - nothing more!

HC: So, we're gonna make this interview over the phone?

D: we're already doing it, aren't we?

HC: ok, let's finish the stuff! Why techno?

D: I like this one.... TECHNO IS MY LIFE! music is just a part of it...
I attend both raves and industrial/trash/hardcore parties, my mind finds the
big dependency of all this kinds of music. When it comes to rave, the only
thing I really hate is harthouse/trance/ambient and heavy dope that comes
along...

HC: So, you don't use drugs?

D: ;>>> I didn't say that? I just think marijuana is enough but not
necessary when we have enough beer and vodka ;>

HC: Why have you stopped releasing modules? A lot of people knows you from
those productions. I know some people that are collecting your stuff for
years!

D: Well, yugoslavia has too many lamers, lot of my stuff fall into claws of
some of them. they were changing texts in modules, and even changing the
author name! 2 years ago one guy asked me how did I get some module. i told
him that i've made it, and he then told me the story how some of his friends
played it on the party and pleaded that they are the creators of the tune!
isn't that lame? that's why I stopped realising any stuff into public.

HC: You turned to real music production?

D: yeah, but I didn't quit the amiga musik scene, you'll hear from me some
stuff VERY SOON!

HC: What do you think of scene musicians?

D: I think lot of musicians were put aside just because they were making
techno. fortunatelly, this seem to be changing in last few months which is
very positive! i'm not talking about commercial stuff, i'm talking about the
REAL stuff - breakbeat, jungle, hardcore, pure, gabber and all possible
fusions of different techno styles i've heard so far!

HC: Do you have a favourite track?

D: I've got some time ago tune that really gets my feet off the ground!
it's called "step into darkness" by randall. this one realy kicks ass! i
guess it was made this summer ('95). it is very dark jungle track.

HC: How about real music?

D: I listen a lot of gabber, the prodigy, lords of acid, messiah, human
resource, nrg, holy noise, lfo, acen, rotterdam termination source,
ultrasonic and whole lotta great stuff dating from '88 till today. there can
be found lot of old house, detroit, acid, breakbeat, pure, jungle etc. When
talking about non-techno stuff the names like ministry, kmfdm, body count,
primus, rage against machine and nine inch nails marks my collection.

HC: Really heavy stuff...

D: THE ENERGY.

online-night-chat-interview with n0pe dope/dUMb
by DoMiNAToR/CoRRoSioN

"i can't see you, but i can read your thoughts"

d: yo man! in order to provide some general data to readers which never
heard of you, tell me some to spread...

nd: there you go:
Name: Ilija Melentijevich
Date of birth: 13.05.1975. (light a candle)
Handle: n0pe dope
previous handles: Nemesis
currend group: dUMb
previous groups: Digital Dreams (as Nemesis), Enemy (as Nemesis and late
N0pe DopE), .jUiCe., Pas Maters... i think that's all

d: why are you so happy ? anyway ??

nd: Whoopsa daisy! Sorry, but it's been quite a while since I had my last
interview.... So, ask me something I could give a cool answer to.

d: ok then... i've heard you're very popular hereby in yugoslavia... tell
me, why is that? are you pretty ? or you are just a fuckin' great
graphician or musician or whatsoever ??

nd: Well, you see, this is a bussiness secret, but since I agreed to this
interview, I have no choice.. so... Yes! I'm pretty! I admit it! Do you
think being pretty is easy? If you were pretty you'd see (xxexexe )

d: oh... that pressure must be a killer... how do you evade from horny
girls, your fans, that are jumping at you at the street looking for autograms
?

nd: Easy: I don't.

d: to be famous is such a hard task...

nd: They all say that one about the attitude..... And, yes, I can't
complain.. Naw! Really I'm desperately faithful to my chosen and beloved
one, my inspiral fire, the essence of my creative being etc. etc... In
other words.. I'm in love.

d: ok, ok... we didn't initiated this interview to write about girls...

nd: We didn't?????

d: no, we didn't ;>> let's jump to a real question... what happened to you
past months? did you quit the scene or it just seemed that way?

nd: Well, luckily (luckily?!?!?!?!?) it only seemed that way... Anyway,
here I am again... I was driven away by some other aspects of my self...
SHIT! I cannot justify myself for neglecting the amiga scene, but i can only
say that I owe much of that downward spiraling :) to my friend and former
colleague Haralampie.. When he quit I got dazen and confused.. What to
say.. I'm back in black.. or sumthin'.

d: since haralampie quit the scene, and you resided, did you join some
other group, or you are just acting freelance?

nd: Well, I do have a group, yes.. Actuall Haralampie founded it before he
quit (it was a couple of weeks after)..... This group is dUMb (as are it's
members) and there are .... xm... one, two, three of us.... One coder, one
gfxman, one swapper and one musician.. But the musician is pretty
unreliable, so i guess I'll have to do the zax (again) sighhh....

d: which bothers you a lot, i presume...

nd: No, not at all! Actually (as you darn well know) I adore making music,
but I don't value myself as a musician.... Anyway all i do is all i like, so
i've got no problem with that, especiallly cause I don't really care about
other people's opinions on what I do or am...

d: what do you think of pc scene ?

nd: PC has no scene!

d: well... it has some sort of scene, we can't really say that there
isn't...

nd: PC is a capable demo machine only because of it's processor power
(only?) Anyway, all I see on PC is advanced ripoff of Amiga ideas.. so if
all they can do is compete with amiga then I have no more comments... I've
seen some nice demos on PC however, but those are rare, and while there are
no major change about that, my opinion stands...

d: do you have your favourite scene group ?

nd: Geee, now i dont know.. I used to have for sure..... SONIK are
definitely great...... hmm... Melon is fading away, but they sure did turn
the scene upside down.... I dont know.... I have friends in lotsa groups so
it's rather hard to be objective.....

d: have you seen m-planet demo from melon dezign ? it was released at
somewhere in holland 2 party in july'95 and won 2nd prize, along with another
melon production which was 1st place! i don't think they're dead...

nd: They're not??? Great! As you know I've been away for a while and I can
only be glad to see that I was wrong...

d: hopefully, you are...

nd: Anyway it's great... Let me add a little sumthing about a favourite
group... I never really had A favourite group, because I either like or
dislike certain productions... setting a cult over a team of people is
...... not my way.

d: i always liked those guys, they always have fresh and original ideas for
productions.

nd: Of course... Demo scene is based on ideas (among others) and these
days, ideas have more and more value as coders are getting crowded, and
graphic techniques are almost perfect... Take an example in graphics... You
have guys who have techniques, but lack heart and art (that sounded nice)..
If you catch my drift...

d: of course i do... nowadays, gfx is getting too much "industrial",
meaning "more gfx for less time". i still think pictures completelly created
with dpaint or brilliance are far more valuable than some shitty scanned
ones.

nd: You have a point there.. I have scanned a couple of pictures for game
graphics purposes only (only!!!!!!) but i never intend to call some of those
my personal art, no matter how I edit them etc. You can't call that art..
but, also, you can't call yourself an artist if you use DPaint or Brilliance
only to copy other peoples art.... like most graphicians do.

d: what happened to Pas Maters ? they use to be such a nice bunch ?

nd: They are still officially unofficial(???)... We are still alive, but
most of the members were struck hard by the Commodore crisis.. At least,
most of those I know.... A dentro will be released, hopefully soon.. It was
started more than a year ago, and we have been working on it some 5-6 hours
all-in-all since then, but I plan to finish my share...

d: in the flashlights of the newest events about amiga, one thing happened
to be the main reason of its surviving - the endless faith of true amiga
sceners... how do you feel about your amiga ?

nd: I love her... :)) Don't look at me like that you know what I mean...
Even while I was scene-inactive, I used my amiga frequently, so I never
really lost touch of it... and I never plan to..... I think I'll have my
Amiga for life.. I was offered a well payed job to produce gfx on PC, but i
refused. Need I say more ? (yes, i'm a dork.)

d: what about your other life interests ?

nd: Well, you see... I do all kinds of creating........ I of course do
paper graphics, and lately I paint as well, I quit trying to play bass guitar
quite a while ago (I can hear Haralampie laughing his ass off about that
one)... I even write, since it is also a form of creativity.. Uncreative
work quickly chokes me so that's why I have to cope with all sorts of
interesting and not so interesting activities...

d: what about RPG ? you are known as one of the biggest RPG fans around...

nd: Oh, yes.... I roleplay a lot..... Actualy, I don't play, much, but i
am a MASTER (I mean a gamemaster, of course) and i believe people say I'm
pretty good at it, but there are no really good masters around here so I
don't take it so hard.... Anyway, I'm sad to see that roleplay in our
country is a wreck and disgrace for real roleplay, all thanx to a number of
infantile morons who ruined the whole idea, and pulled many otherwise decent
men into their concept of 'roleplay'.

Anyway.... I am currently working on legalizing RPG in YU, and bying the
licences that are needed etc. So anyone who has some useful info or ideas or
whateveeer can contact me for that or any other RPG related matter, but I
must warn you: I'm fucking allergic to RPG-morons I described above. This
may not sound like me at all,but I can't help it...

d: how about giving your contact address ?

nd: Oh, yes, of course.....
Ilija Melentijevich (n0pe dope of dUMb)
ulica Nikole Dobrovicha 13/12
11070 Novi Beograd
Serbia, Yugoslavia

All creative guys are welcome, but since i'm really unreliable fella i can't
guarantee an answer... (but I'll do my best!)

d: ok then... i think nothing more needs to be said... do you have some
personal comment, greetings or so ?

nd: I don't know ...... this interview has really been an online Chaos a.d.
so I can't tell... anyway i greet all my friends and forgotten contacts and
.... Hi mom! Hi rachel!

Rachel's my girl! :)

d: nice name...

nd: That's not her real name actually, but she's a schisophrenic and Rachel
is one side of her personality... AIN'T SHE GREAT?

d: yeah, yeah... she surely is.... so, i think its time to close this
little chit-chat, what do you think ?

nd: Guess so... I'm sure we'll both soon come up with lotsa questions, but
i guess we'll just have to wait a while....

d: shit 'appens!

nd: Fuckin voodoo magic mannnnn! King Willy say i not only kill you, I have
to take your soul.. Voodooo magic.. Fuckin' voodoo magic man!

CONTRAST
by DoMiNAToR

One day we said: "Fuck Belgrade!" and gathered a small group of real
ravers, my friends from group and few other lunatics from "KOLE KOJOT & PTICA
TRKACICA STRIKES AGAIN IPAK", we bought a train ticket and went to a party in
Novi Sad. The place to be was a club named "Contrast". The day of happening
was Sunday.

After real cool 2-hour voyage we finally reached Novi Sad at 22. Our
funky bunch started searching for an unknown place called "Contrast". The
only explanation we knew was something like this:" When you exit the station
go left until the end of the street and then left again. 100 meters after
the bridge you'll find it." Cool eh? Actually, we were hoping that will be
enough 'cause none of us knows Novi Sad...

Fortunatelly, after some time of straight walking, we reached a
crossroad. It was more than obvious that the only possible solutions was to
go left or right, so we did go left, of course... But, the view wasn't very
promising. we were facing an infinite amount of trees crossed with bridge...
Since that was the night of proving how crazy we could be, we stepped through
the trees and after a while we saw some neon lights. YES - we yelled! We
almost started to celebrate our succesfull exploration in an unknown city
when we spotted that those neon light were commercials for some fucking
restaurant! We got demoralised to death and almost went back when we heard
some noises near the restaurant. A few steps further revealed the "Contrast"
label above the door. Yeah, that's it!

First impression when we entered is somewhat like we've entered an art
gallery, 'cause that hall that looks just like it. When we passed it
adrenaline immediatelly rushed to our weins, our brains flooded with the
sounds of Human Resource's Dominator followed by the legendary Stakker
Humanoid! We rushed to dancefloor immediatelly and didn't get off it until
the end of that night's session! The choice of music was incredible and
impossible to hear in any of Belgrade rave clubs, at least not in the last 2
years of harthouse/trance sold off of Belgrade DJ's lead with well known (and
the most influencing) "United DJ's of trance" (now renamed to Integra DJ's) -
DJ S.T.R.O.B., DJ MARC WEE, DJ EYE and DJ INNVISION.

Using the crystal clean sound of magnificent BOSE tunnel system, FAKIR,
FERDY and some other DJ's fullfilled us with some good old stuff like WHO
KILLED JFK, previously mentioned DOMINATOR, L.A. STYLE and others, continued
with some really hardcored acid and (real) trance tracks which culminated
with really heavy stuff, so called GABBA or ROTTERDAM HARDCORE (or simply
TOTAL HARDCORE!).

Here are some of tracks/groups played:

WESTBAM
MARUSHA
MEMBERS OF MAYDAY
ULTRASONIC
THE PRODIGY
SVEN VÄTH
SHOCKER AND THUNDERDOME COMPILATIONS
HUMAN RESOURCE
MISTERIA
STAKKER HUMANOID
ORBITAL
L.A. STYLE

All in all, real ravers will enjoy it - Belgrade hearthousers will
probably hate it! I LOVE IT!!! This article's intention is to inform all of
you ravers who are really hardcore to support this event which happens every
Sunday evening on a regular basis! see ya there!

Nowadays, contrast changed a bit, but it STILL is nice place to hang out,
but HARDCORE is kicked out of DJ lists... shit happens, but not for long!

KK&PTSAI LIVE ON STAGE 2
By sAfe

All you news horny mag-readers have probably checked the Hardcore #1
DoMiNAToR's concert review... Well, here's another one!

This time the place was the Petrovaradin fortress above the city of Novi
Sad. The weather was gloomy, and it had rained for 4-5 hours before the
concert started. Again, it was a multi show with several DJ's and MC's from
Yugoslavia. From the better DJ names from YU there were Wolfgang S, DJ Eye,
and of course - KK&PTSAI with DoMiNAToR. The first two guys played some nice
trance (not harthouse) while the third ones played... Well, check out the
name of this magazine!

The weather was EXCELLENT for a Hardcore/Breakbeat experience with all
that mud around everyone present and people were jumping, dancing, waving
their bodies, heads, di...[censored]... etc. Almost the whole CoRRoSioN
gang was there as backup dancers/jumpers, and they did (with a little grass
dopping) jumped and danced for one hour and twelve minutes how long the gig
lasted... The people were so choked with the hart-trance an anonymous DJ
called Innvision played before KK&PTSAI's part so they virtually exploded on
the sounds of heavy bassdrums, and hard beats combined with ultra fast
breakbeats. They were so heated the concert had almost become an Industrial,
Nine Inch Nails type concert 'cause KK&PTSAI & DoM started playing some VERY
HARD STUFF with strong electric guitars and typical Hardcore techno rhytms
over them... It was.... MASSIVE...

You might've guessed that I was there. The only reason I remember this
all is that after I got a little grass high, I put dark sun-glasses and
bounced on a 10cm wide iron pole with my head which cleared my memory a
little bit... Or I simply wasn't high enough...

After about 60mins. of KK&PTSAI'S playing, it was scheduled that they
must leave the stage. But! All the people ASKED FOR MORE!!! So, they gave
them another 10 mins. of Hardcore and than virtually escaped in front of the
angry hart-housers whose time they intrepided...

And everything was as it was before... You know how hart-house goes -
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. etc.

YUGOSLAV TECHNO SCENE REVIEW
By DoMiNAToR

Nowadays, techno scene looks quite different than it used to be few years
ago. Growing up of the original ravers caused their split into two groups.

First group of ravers is mostly influenced by harthouse, trance, house
and ambient. They have very powerfull leading DJ's known under name of
"Integra". They got so big and powerful that they started organising big
3-5000 people raves at various places with great 50-70 KW sound systems,
lasers, big screens and lot of other technology used to complete rave
atmosphere. Of course, they are putting a high-priced entrance ticket at
about 10 DEM wich is TOO expensive and it shows their real commercial
intention of the events! Other bad thing about these people is that most of
them are heavy doping with XTC, LSD and who knows what... (it's probably the
only way they can enjoy the music so monotonious as trance is...)

Second group of people could be called "THE REAL RAVERS" because they
still enjoy music at the first place, all the fucking equipment (lasers and
stuff) are not the main reason of attending the rave! These people are most
straight when talking about alcohol or drugs. Light drugs (marijuana) are
used sometimes by some of people, but majority avoid it! Types of music
adored by these people ranges from trance, hardtrance, trancecore and acid to
the total hardcore! People like LORD FERDI THE DESPISER, NOISEMAKER and
DoMiNAToR (me) keep the hardcore vibe alive around here!

UPRISING
by Fabio Jones

In these troubled times of ours, people of all shapes and sizes seem
to be asking age old questions like "what does it all mean" and "where are we
going?" The dance music industry is no exception. As for Dance Music, "where
are we going" is a very good question. In a divided and conquered Western
Judeo-Christian Capitalist Society we are faced with many choices regarding
youth culture and just which rebellion we're going to take part in. First
and foremost, we all want to be individuals (right?), but choosing
specifically which individual group of individualists we are going to
individualize ourselves with (so we can express our individuality) is a tough
choice. Especially during these transitional times. The death of
Techno/Rave has left so many people in the music business at a loss.
Naturally record companies, magazines, and clothing manufacturers are
extremely concerned about where we're going because they want desperately to
be a part of our decision-making process in terms of what most of us are
going to really get into next. Everybody in the "industry" wants to be the
one that really gets a hold of the next big thing first so they can get
really rich off of our mad and endless desire for CD's, hats, and slipmats
and t-shirts.

So, in this post-rave world, what's it going to be? Acid Jazz?
Ambient? Deep House? Progressive House? Ambient Dub? Electronic Music?
Trance? Hard Trance? Ambient Trance? Progressive Ambient Techno Trance?
Hard Deep House? Progressive Acid Jazz Dub? This might be getting a little
ridiculous for you, but to our friends at record labels like Moonshine,
Tribal America, Hardkiss, FFRR, Caroline, Zoe Magik, Instinct, and most
importantly Epic Street (the proud new signers of the chart-topping
M-People), this is serious stuff.

Let's backtrack a minute: record companies are in business -- the
business of selling records to make money for themselves (and very often,
their parent corporations.) While labels like Moonshine, Zoe Magik, Instinct,
and Hardkiss are privately owned (although dubiously funded), others like
FFRR and Caroline are satellite labels for Polygram (which is actually owned
by Thorn/EMI, the largest weapons manufacturer in the world); Tribal America
is an offshoot of IRS records which is a thinly guised play for the
underground by CBS/Sony. We here at XLR8R are not trying to expose these
connections in order to sway your buying habits in any way. We're simply
establishing the motivation of the part of a record company to make big BIG
money, in other words, a serious interest in what is about to break into the
mainstream from the underground.

Recently at Billboard Dance Music Summit in San Francisco, topics
like Dance Artist Development (spending a ton of cash so you know what
Rozalla looks like when you hear her song), Independent Record Labels (how
they can make cash off vinyl and the future of Techno (if it's not called
Rave anymore, then what is and what do we call it so people can buy it?) were
deeply investigated. Don't think these people are stupid, because they're
not. These industry types are very good at what they do and keenly
interested in where we are going as a culture and what we're gonna do next.

So where are we going? Divisions is on the rise -- Unity seems to be
out -- separatism and difference are quickly replacing the desire for
everyone to be together. At least that's how it seems. We might, however,
be suffering from the diversification of a small yet broad market. Let's
take a look at what that means: Moonshine Music, a privately owned and well-
established techno label have suddenly turned around and scheduled the
release of numerous Acid Jazz compilations. At the same time, they claim to
be "staying pure with the original intentions of the label." Although the
transition from House to Hip-Hop is a natural one (take Bobby Kondors or
Masters at Work, for example) the stretch between Hard Trance and Acid Jazz
(a dubious one to say the least (grasping at straws?))

Young American Primitive, the MCT/Zoe Magik mass medial monolith, is
without a label deal. Daisy Glow/Tasti Box are now doing a self-professed
"pop thing."

The Hardkiss Label is promoting and actually charting records like
"Little Wing" and "Rabbit in the Moon" before they've got white labels to
play.

Billboard Magazine only seems to talk about Deep House and Hip-Hop.

Epic Records is on a rampage spending spree trying to break their M-
People act.

NovaMute (Mute Records America) sent a lovely record bag (a $35
retail value) to all their industry friends for Christmas (but in
collaboration with Plus Right Records this same label seems to be breaking
some ground with the new Detroit sound.)

Ambient and Dub are the new hot terms for '94.

WaxTrax/Warp records are forging ahead with the Artificial
Intelligence series.

(I think you get the idea.)

There are so many different niches of style rising up as we speak.
Offshoots, hybrids or retro forms of house music that how is anyone supposed
to know where we're going with all this. Labels are waging war against the
concept of unity and togetherness an we (the buying public) are being taken
for a ride. The House Culture in any given city is not a large one. We have
survived until now without major label support, without large chain record
store support and we have done well for ourselves.

As we've all learned from the Techno-Rave phenomena that when big
money gets involved in a movement created by the people, the marketplace is
immediately watered own and quickly becomes a money-oriented parody of itself
(look to the record industry can do to a grass roots movement.) A grass roots
movement is what we have. Until now we've received no attention from
CBS/Sony, EMI/Polygram, Warner Communications and other BIG money companies.
Until now we've been largely comprised of privately owned record labels,
distributors, clothing stores, magazines, and newspapers. Our marketing
strategies have been based on word of mouth and the quality of the work we
produce. As more and more corporations become involved with out movement we
will begin to change. We here at XLR8R invite this change. We have never
been a discouraging voice in the movement and if merging with a major label
or the signing of an underground artist by a large corporate record label
will enable them to produce more and better records, then bring it on.

We at XLR8R are also anxious to take part in the roasting of these
same labels as they miss the mark dramatically and seriously underestimate
the power and intelligence of the underground movement we freely associate
ourselves with.

The point of UPRISING and its place in XLR8R is to provide a monthly
perspective on our professional progress as a movement. We believe that
there is quality and love in this phenomena we are a part of and although
progress in the past has been the enemy of the underground, that with unity,
positively and love as our premise, we will rise to the surface in order to
bring this music and its vision of love into the 21st century and beyond.

COMPILATIONS

House of Limbo
23rd Precinct-Limbo/UK via Tribal/US/CD

Glasgow record shop 23rd Precinct launched the Limbo label a little over
a year ago taking the emerging UK progressive house sound and turning it on
it's hard head, making melodic and uplifting house records. If you're at all
into intelligent dance music which gets at your feet rather than going above
your head then you should run out immediately and buy this compilation.
Perhaps the fact that the label is based in Scotland, several hours away from
the hyped and overly trendy London scene, has kept the music at Limbo fresh
and different. Certainly there is an abundance of melodic ideas here. The
breaks tend to be melodically driven rather than exclusively rhythmic and,
unlike alot of progressive tracks, there is clear structure to alot of the
music not just tired sequencer loops. Stand out tracks for me are GIPSY's
"I'll Trance You" -awesome ambient breakdowns- and the self titled track from
STEALTH SONIC SOUL -did I say Piano Riff?. A four track vinyl EP from this
compilation is also available on Tribal. Very highly recommended. AR

DJ Culture: The Stress Compilation
Stress/UK via Moonshine Music/US/CD

One of the problems facing the general music buying public when buying
house music compilations is that the listening environment at home is not
quite the same as hearing the music on a thumping sound system at a club
-somehow the gaps between the records spoil the vibe! A new and very welcome
trend seems to be mixed compilations. Strictly Rhythm have released several
excellent ones and this new compilation of top English label Stress continues
the idea with tracks programmed by none other than Sasha and Dave Seaman.
Wanna hear tasteful musical mixing that makes sense? You got it right here.
Nothing flashy, just enough to bring out the best in the slamming music
released on the Stress label in the last year or so. The music speaks for
itself with an emphasis on the funky side of house. Biggest props here go to
the BROTHERS LOVE DUBS, whose "Ming" disco tracks in their various mixes are
featured as well as the wonderful HUSTLER'S CONVENTION's "Give It All to Me",
the solid electro-garage "Can't Play Around" by KATHY BROWN and the pure Euro
sound of LAST RHYTHM. Once again it's good to see Moonshine Music having the
good sense to make quality British compilations available in the US at
domestic prices. Top tunes, top DJ'ing, no excuses, go get. AR

The Acid Jazz Test Part 1
Moonshine/US/CD

Fans of the Dorado label needn't pay much attention to this one, it's got
lots of the second compilation's material - namely Jhelisa's sexy, Young
Disciple-ish "All I Need", Milk's delightfully ominous "Beached" and Shakee's
incredible spoken word colaboration with the Brooklyn Funk Essentials called
"A Headnadda's Journey To The Planet Adidi Skizm" (okaaaaay...) But that's
all right, 'cause they're all great tracks and add additional songs like
"West By South West" by As One and the Bygrave's street soul classic "Set Me
Free" and you've got a pretty decent collection of vocal and instrumental
jazz funk for mass consumption. ML

This Is Acid Jazz: New Voices
Instinct/US/CD

To those who still haven't a clue as to what "Acid Jazz" is, this
compilation shouldn't help much. That doesn't mean there's bad material here
per se, it's just that the tracks tempo ranges from A.J.'s typical 80- 110bpm
to house rhythms of 120bpm and up. Actually this only pertains to the CFM
Band's "Hold Me Tight" and Swing Machine's "Deep Vibes". The rest of the
music isn't mindblowing, but it's got JTQ's gorgeous "Spirit Of The Sun" and
"Tell It Like It Is" not to mention Swing Machine's "Soul Power" sample-
driven "What's Happenin'". Lots of breakbeats-with-live-riffing, plus Night
Trains' irritating "Lovesick" (Why don't they just break down and play "Work
To Do"?) and "Lonely Road" singles. Indefinitive to say the least. ML

Rising High Trance Injection
Instinct/US/2CD

This double CD set, while not exactly "trance", is an interesting
excursion through various flavors and types of electronic music. Tracks with
a classic trance sound - can anyone say "square wave"? - are
counterbalancedwith several house-influenced tracks, such as Perry &
Rhodan's"The Beat Just Goes Straight On and On", and a lot of ambience. The
second disk, with an average song length of about 12 minutes, is almost
entirely ambient music of one sort or another. The Irresistible Force's
"Flying High" and Dreamfish's "School of Fish" are long, complex, beatless
tracks which ought to have just about everyone flat on their backs by the
end, and "Voices of the Rainforest" by New London School of Electronics
brings some tribal sounds into the mixture. This isn't really the place to
look for a straight-up fix of classic trance, but the interesting combination
of styles ensures that you won't be disappointed. JM

Feed Your Head
Planet Dog/UK/LP/CD

The Feed Your Head compilation is indeed for the mind. This CD is
comprised of very beautiful and intricate mental rhythms that take you far
far away and deep inside. Music made electronically but that has a
surprisingly predominant organic feeling is great to experience.
ASTRALASIA's "Twilight Whirl" is a heavy synth tribal gem without beats:
when I hear this track I can't stop from flailing about the room. DRUM
CLUB's "Furry Meadows", TUU's "One Thousand Years", ULLULATOR's " and hardly
any ears!" are very soothing earthy tracks. Lots of tribal rhythms, flute,
tabulas that could quite easily become ritual music for ambient tribes around
the world. SYSTEM 7, BANCO DE GAIA, PRESSURE OF SPEECH all provide groovy
ambient dub. EAT STATIC and THE KNIGHTS OF THE OCCASIONAL TABLE give us
crazy mental music that may deeply affect our dreams. All the music on this
CD has a powerful organic feel and offers the listener the opportunity to
transcend and open doors to a higher understanding through electronic tribal
music. I highly recommend this compilation for those looking for ambient
music other than the over abundant spacey synth type. EEG

Platinum on Black
ffrr/US/CD

"When it began in the mid-eighties house music was easy to define and
categorize. Now it has been split so many ways and analyzed so many times it
seems like almost every new tune starts a trend all of it's own." So starts a
well written sleeve note by DJ magazine's Chris Mellor. This CD presents
house music in many guises and, even if a few of the tracks are a little
overplayed, the selections make good sense for someone interested on getting
ahold of some of the better club tracks from the last year or so. There are
14 very varied cuts ranging from the soulful house sound of JOE ROBERT's
"Back in My Life" or DANNY CAMPBELL & SASHA's "Together" to hard and funky
house such as X-PRESS 2 "London X-Press" or THE GOODMEN "Give It Up" and the
dubbed-out bliss of ONE DOVE "White Love" and the looped-out madness of
ORBITAL's "Impact". Programmed by David Morales, this collection makes a
nice change from the current slew of one style category compilations that
never really live up to their monikers. Platinum on Black promises nothing
specific through it's title, but delivers solid and all-round eclectic house
music. Good purchase for anyone looking for an all round selection of
accessible club music. AR

Tranquility Bass
Broadcast Standard Issue #1
Exist Dance/US/12

This 12" is first in a series of remixes/reissues from Exist Dance. The
classic "Cantamilla" is included in its original and remixed form, as well as
"They Came in Peace" and "Mia Yadana." Low-energy ethnic bliss. MC

The Judgement Day
The Mayday Compilation Volume III
Hot-UK/Radikal-US/2CD

Its not often a bunch of great techno bands appear on one release. The
Mayday compilation has accomplished this and is chock full of great techno
tunes. With both UK and US artists lending a hand, you're in for a long trip
through a variety of styles, 23 to be exact. From the hard hitting Moby
track, UI HE FU to the UK breakbeat style of N.R.G., both of which appear on
CD 1. CD 2 includes the unique yet repetitive Jeff Mills tune Data 6 and the
smooth buzz of Psilocybin Part 1. Most fans of techno will definetely wanna
pick this one up. SS

HOUSE AND TECHNO

Blood Brothers
Inca Chant
Baseroom/UK/12

On the A side we are greeted by the Ritmo Rivals East of the Equator
remix. If you remember the Ritmo Rivals "Americano Slide" then you already
know what to expect from this: quality building trance. Driving bassline,
drum rolls, ethereal effects and soaring synths give a good anticipatory
feel. Nice one. The flip offers the Trancid Trailer mix and Incapella. The
first is a decent atmospheric acid house track with congas adding flavor and
some nice subtle pianos thrown in. Nice but doesn't stand out from the pack.
Incapella is basically just the keyboard line and some electronic doodling.
A nice record, play it make up your own mind. DV

Mystic Phases
Ancestral EP
Toronto Underground/Canada/12

Marvelously varied six tracker from Vince Ailey whose Mirage EP on
Toronto Underground (TU003) you should pick up if you can find it for minimal
tribal grooves. Here the vibe is alternately down and dirty, deep and moody.
"Yabo" is a hard driving house track with a cracking vocal sample. "Funky
Stuff" is just that, spare feel, hooky bassline and cheeky 'ah shit' sample.
"NRG" is a haunting organ riff-driven builder with jack-style rimshot shuffle
and sonorous melodic pads. An acquired taste but deep and sweet stuff
indeed. On the flip "Reach" sets a spacey tone with bell tree and oscillator
sweeps over a grinding thump of a groove. Dubbed-out organ lines, rattling
tambourine rhythms and slow swept string stabs build this one in an almost
Wild Pitch style. "Blackout", a subdued tribal workout with effective builds
and breaks, and "Voices", a punchy groove that is melodically driven through
the bass, complete a wonderfully mature house release that should be in your
box now! AR

Lex Loofah
Freaky Deaky
Warp/UK/12

One of two new releases from Warp. This has a tasty old school feel to
it: a hollow bassline, grunts from Mr Brown, hip hop samples, all layered
over with a well tempered breakbeat and atmospheric keys. Deep. On the B
side there are two cuts, the first "Step Off" starts kickin', but after the
bassline drops in I kind of lost interest. Next is a catchy hummer called
"Ooh La La". It has a much more housey feel with a bouncy bass

line and
vocal samples urging you along. Overall a choice record. DV

MG
Over You
Hi-Bias/Canada/12

Top Canadian producer Miguel Graca's new release on Hi-Bias is a deep
vocal cut showcasing a soulful performance from Francis Clark. "Original Raw
Mix" is what a vocal record is all about: the song. The arrangement is
subtle and leaves the voice to do the business. "Royal Dub" is the one for
me however! All the instrumental ideas left over from the vocal cut thrust
to the fore in a thick driving bass heavy 9 minute mix. Superb mature house
music. The flip mixes are on a lighter tip: "Rub Kenetic Dub" features
synth riffs and cool manipulated vocal fragments. "Rub Kenetic Vocal" is
just that. Cool shit from the DJ's Label. AR

Marine Boy
Fluid
Om Records/UK/2x12

Trancey twinpack from Om. First up is a progressive stomper with a
marching bassline, burbling electronic noises and the sampled plea to "Let Me
See Your Hands". The flip is similar with the percussion livened up by
adding a subdued breakbeat. Pretty good track that never quite seems to get
where it's going. The second disc is a pair of remixes from 108 Grand.
Faster than the originals with more of a trance orientation. Added vocal
samples, acidy bits and a couple of tribal touches are added here and there.
The flip has 108 Grand's Mad and Messy mix. A good building moody trancer
with a sample last heard on "Jungle Bill" by Yello. Not a bad pair of discs.
DV

Junior Vasquez
X
Tribal America/US/12

The NYC godhead returns with an original project instead of remix work
and wow! Slammin' sound of the Sound Factory. Minimal, bass heavy groove;
subtle backslide samples, popping electro noises, reverberent distortion FX's
that build and mutate. This is a music of detail, intricate in structure yet
when it comes down to it, house music at its' purest and dance music at its'
finest. Two mixes here, "Sound Factory Mix" and "Junior Style Dub" both work
mighty fine. Sweat it. AR

Trip Ta Funk
Here I Come Baby
Ultra Ethereal/US/12

Dubtribe's alter-ego are back at the task with another choice offering.
"Here I Come Baby" starts with rolling bongos chased quickly by a frantic
funky rhythm with a breakdown to a smooth hollow bassline. Packed with horn
stabs, old school treats and shouts of satisfaction. The cut. Next is
Sunshine's mix, slower, stonier, trippier. It still has the funky groove of
the original only this time it's obviously in no hurry. On the back is
"Vegetable Garden" which starts with a wonderful bendy sounding bassline and
then fills out with horns, beats and the sampled reassurance that "Trip Ta
Funk" sound system got it goin on!" Buy this record. DV

Loni Clark
U
Nervous/US/12

Bear with me folks, I've been coming down hard on formulaic follow- up
singles in this issue. I can't help it. There are a lot of them out there.
Loni Clark caught our ears with the monstrous "Rushing" single a while back.
Now with "U" she relies heavily on previous nuances to propel two mediocre
126bpm garage mixes and a busily overarranged 101bpm R&B mix. All
redundancies aside, the remaining two mixes are BRILLIANT and make this
record well worth the purchase. Here's what's up: Garage geniuses Mood II
Swing compose a stunning 126bpm dub, weaving vocal snippets in and out of a
melancholy, driving arrangement. On the improved downtempo side, the
"Hip-Hop Mix" is a stripdown sound lover's dream. Clark's vocals are
showcased by a bass-heavy, almost Massive Attack-like groove with subtle
piano chords floating around at all the right times. Look for the goofy
cover and believe. ML

Renegade Soundwave
Renegade Soundwave
Mute/UK/12

Finally there is a long overdue new self-titled single out from these
guys. There are five mixes on this 12'' including two by Leftfield, of which
the "Leftfield Remix" is the one which attracted my attention. It starts out
with some low frequency bass and builds up to speed at 100bpm. The
recognizable sample in this track that seems to stand out sounds like a saw
being bent back and forth with effects over it. This cut is the longest at 8
minutes which leaves enough time for a couple of good breaks. The other
mixes range from soft vocal house to trance. Also available on limited
edition seven inch. MZ

MC

Scheme
Freedom Tonight/So Real
Toronto Underground/Canada/12

Great two track, six mix release featuring subtlely un-Diva vocals from a
very capable Jessica Ramp. "Freedom Tonight" in the Club Mix is the sweet
melodic downtown kind of sound that we've come to expect from Hi-Bias. No
hysterics, this gets the job done with a sound arrangement, solid though
minimal vocal and catchy melodic synth fragments. The Fly Overnight dub mix
is more of the same with a bouncy bassline and more rhythmic development.
The third (un-named mix on my promo) is the one I'll play: cool spacey
groove, vibey and full of atmosphere. Pure Saturday night! "So Real" is a
sparer organ groove with sampled vocal and tasty synth stabs. The two dubs
are deeper, smoother. More sweet stuff. AR

Joe Roberts
Lover
ffrr/US/12

Top British soul vocalist Joe Roberts with a top song with structure and
great hooks, here given the major mix treatment by ace Liverpool remix team
and artists K Klass. This is the club sound of Northern England. If this
doesn't get the hands in the air nothing will. Solid vocal performance
matched with a killer piano riff and gorgeous sensuous pad sounds and a
tribal-esque groove. Flip mix is the hard-assed Pharmacy Dub, much more on
the UK progressive tip, still has a really minimal meaty tribal groove but
with almost acidic synth doodlings and edgy analogue melodic riffs which keep
building and breaking down overlaid with clever vocal sample manipulation.
Fab. AR

DJ Duke
Blow Your Whistle-Death to Digifunk Remix
ffrr/US/12

Here's a strange concept. Ultra-cred London team X-Press 2 (Ashley
Beadle, Rocky and Diesel) do a slamming remix of a DJ Duke record that's
almost a tribute to their classic Boy's Own releases! Though out for a while
in the original mix on Duke's own Power Music label, this new "Death to
Digifunk" mix gets in a title joke at SF's expense. Kicks ass when Dukes'
classic east coast sound is paired with the floor filling groove of hard
underground London house. AR

Fellows
Play All Cuts EP-Vol 2
Hi-Bias/Canada/12

The second in the Play All Cuts series, the first of which is still in my
box a year or so later. Where Vol 1 was jazz inflected, this one is harder,
more tribal. Side A opens with the tinny percussive "I Flight 2 Night",
where spare rhythmic riffs slide against tweaky synth, resonant marimba and
goofy vocal breaks. Unusual and fun. "Muzik Don't Stop" is an angular bass
and kick driven track more in the style of the Vol 1 EP. My favorite cut
here is "Shoo Shoo", a catchy sampled riff, bubbling bass and cartoon like
vocal stabs. "Reach for the Top" completes this great value 4 tracker with a
NY style organ-filled slammer again featuring goofy vocal samples: these
Fellows seem to have a thing for those. AR

The Groove Regatta
Hey Brother
Onizom-Irma/Italy/12

Once again leave it to the Italians to put out another wicked jazz track.
Produced by studio sub-genius Claudio Rispoli (aka Mozart) whose releases are
almost guaranteed to be fly. The four mixes here can be classified as jazzy
house with vocals and nice piano, congas, sax, guitars and the ever popular
JB samples. Every mix here is different but all are excellent and could fit
into your record collection if you have soul! MZ

Self Control
Initiation EP
Toronto Underground/Canada/12

An unusual moody 3 track EP from the prolific Miguel Graca. The long (16
minute) A side cut "Chameleon" in an aptly named Ever Changing Mix is an
understated ambient house track with a lot of changes that avoids the cliches
that alot of music designed for chilling falls into. "Just a Feeling" is the
cut for me on this EP however, combining that unmistakable 6am vibe with the
deep, deep sound that Strictly Rhythm did so well in their early releases.
All we need now is for someone to start playing music like this at afterhours
parties! AR

Dr. Freeclouds Psychedelic Drugstore
Ron D. Core
Mix CD/US/CD

Hard and relentless is what it is. It's Techno - hard core and hard
acid. Whatever you want to call it, the emphasis is on hard! Ron's music
selection can only be described as intelligent. In the whole 78 minutes of
the CD I don't think I heard a single "woo-woo-woo" sample loop. It sure is
more than formula Techno breakbeat + chainsaws + car alarms. One thing for
sure with this sort of Techno, it doesn't sound tired or commercial. The
packaging is as good as the music; Ron hired Mark Hiatus of Havoc clothing
fame to do the art. It's all bright and glossy process printing; the cover
can even double as a fold-out poster. Cool. The only bad thing for those
who like to know what songs are included (if you like the track, buy it! DJs
don't pay ASCAP royalty fees for mix projects) is trying to decipher the
track listings. The font is cool but rather unreadable. With 11 mix tapes
released over the last two years Ron has shown incredible DJing skills with
all of them. Those skills, with the clear fidelity of CD sound, combine for
an excellent addition to a music collection. GR

Vapourspace
Themes From Vapourspace
ffrr/US/CD

Mark Gage, the human meteorological phenomenon known as Vapourspace,
brings us his debut LP - a complex twisting journey through the cloudscapes
in his head. Gage, who was lofted frem relative obscurity as an ambient DJ
in Rochester, New York into instant stardom through the success of his single
"Gravitational Arch of 10" and its 35-minute-long incarnation as the
"Magnetic Gravity Arc Suite", creates highly experimental trance-influenced
electronic music which manages to escape most classification. Although it is
pretty easy to guess at Gage's influences, he brings a sort of formalism to
the structure of his songs which lifts them above much of the
hot-record-of-the-week continuum. With titles like "Degaussing Atmospheric
Charges" and "Paradox of Time Dilation", the album is undeniably atmospheric,
but manages to become more than just a soundscape. Probably my biggest
complaint is that the CD version is produced as a single hour long cut with
no track divisions. Although I can understand wanting to make the album a
unified whole, it seems like producing the disc in this way is overkill. JM

AMBIENT AND UNCLASSIFIED

Various Artists
Ambiento-A FAX Compilation
Reflective/US/CD

Ambiento, a compilation of releases from Pete Namlook's FAX +49-
69/450464 label, represents the first US release (through Reflective Records)
of this influential ambient music. Its six tracks feature Pete Namlook and
various collaborators (Dr. Atmo, Atom Heart, and Jonah Sharp of Space Time
Continuum). The ambient sound of FAX is minimal, relying less on the ethnic
samples and environmental noises common to most so-called "ambient" music of
today. Pete Namlook's take on ambient music is more comparable to "Discreet
Music"-era Eno than Deep Forest, ambient music in a truer form. MC

Adham Shaikh
Realignment
Modulation Elektronik/Canada/CD

This new release from Canadian Adham Shaikh is quite remarkable and
lengthy -most tracks run 20 minutes. His selections of noises and structures
are unique and intriguing. Some tracks are soft yet very densely layered,
uplifting ambient pillows to dream on. Other tracks seem to reside in a
haunting eerie darkness of beautifully strange frequencies and tribal
tendencies. The first track "Pulsation (Oscillation Vibration)" begins and
ends with a soft spacey techno pace. What lies in the middle are pleasant
layers of noises, frequencies and feelings that one might experience leaving
the earth's atmosphere, orbiting rapidly around an aimlessly wandering
asteroid and then re-entering the atmosphere! Track 2 "Quazar" could be a
soundtrack to a very groovy cyber (and yes ambient) film not yet in
existence. This track seems to be made with certain images in mind. Track
3, "Oberon (Grey Matter)" is a wonderful supplement for any environment.
What begins as slightly electronic and austere goes through very subtle
changes over a long period of time right before your ears and before you
realize it you have been floating forever with only love and clouds in your
mind. Track 4 "Alternate Spectrum (Transmission)" is a nice combination and
balance of seemingly organic sounds and very electronic sounds. This track
isn't as long as the others but is just as powerful and developed. All the
music on Adham Shaikh's CD appears to have been designed to take the listener
to specific places with specific feelings. The music is moody and full of
many brilliantly executed transitions from the deep dark and eerie to the
beautiful and heavenly. These types of transitions could come across as
awkward and amateur, but seem very very natural here. For info on this CD

Hallucination Engine
Axiom (dist. by Island)/US/CD

Bill Laswell and crew in another amazing Axiom release -a steaming
platter of jazz-influenced dub ambience. Laswell has built up an empire on
the Axiom label by releasing a series of mutated, funky dub-fusion-world-
music albums featuring both new musicians and old favorites who Laswell has
saved from obscurity. The list of contributors sounds like some kind of
all-star team: Wayne Shorter, Nicky Skopelitis, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy
Collins, Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, and Aiyb Dieng. Every Axiom release
has a very distinctive sound: a bubbling witch's brew of live instrumental
jams heavily produced and dubbed over in the studio. Laswell is a bass
guitarist and a studio wizard, and it shows -each track features impeccable
bass lines and delicate, distinctive production work. "Black Light" is a
dark, sinuous jazz piece powered by Wayne Shorter's sax riffs and Bootsy
Collin's distorted bass; "Mantra" combines electric violin by Shankar with
heavily dubbed tabla and talking drums. If you're looking for real "world
music", you can't do much better than this hunk o'fusion. JM

THE PROdiGY eXPERiENCE
By sAfe

THE "Pionir" hall.
The white city of Belgrade...
8th December.
1995.

The Gods themselves are here. The ruffest motherfuckers in the jungle
came to CoRRoSioN's home town. We couldn't miss it... We didn't miss it.

It all started with the Belgrade trance motherfuckers, our beloved and
never forgotten Integra team. I personally hate them, but the Belgrade
so-called techno scene seems to like 'em... I really don't know why...

Beside them, the fore-"groups" were Liquid Limbs with their not so good
live-act. These guys virtually COPY Orbital and their famous light-glasses
look.

°\/O^O\/° (this is the ASCII copy of their glasses).
^ ^

\ /
\ /
|
Lights:-+

I have nothing to say about their live act, 'cause it was trance...

Then came a DJ from Budapest, known as DJ Shultz. He was quite good. He
played trance, ok, but then he started with some very hard Acid which was a
VERY cool preparation for the upcoming attraction...

Some guy who spent the whole evening bullshiting and announcing the
participants on this Rave announced THE PROdiGY somewhere about 7 times.

After the seventh time, the sounds of Break & Enter filled the whole.
All the 15000 (!) gathered ravers had simply gone wild. The laser shaped
"THE PROdiGY" on the gigantic 30*10 meters screen. The famous ball with the
famous prodigy "animal" rolled on the stage... Then he jumped out. His look
was, as usually, horrible and the public was, as usually, scared by him.

For this event he did this to himself. He was bald on the top of his
head, you know like the clowns in the circus. His hair... Well... What was
left of his hair was gathered in two lines going from his forehead all the
way to the back of his head. His make-up was... Interesting...

Then the black part of the group arised on the stage. Leroy & the other
one, I forgot his name, were dancing and rapping (!) during most of the tunes
played. The only whitey left was Liam who as usually did all the music work.

I lie.

There was another musician present. He held an electric guitar in his
hands, and played all the guitar parts on "Their Law", "Voodoo people", and
on some new tunes. It was great!

Rumour is that THE PROdiGY and Ministry did a tune TOGETHER!!! Man, talk
about a pair of aces!!! I would REALLY like to hear it!

Especially for this concert, THE PROdiGY played 4 new songs. I didn't
hear their names, but I can tell you this. The third album is going to be a
blast!!!

sAfe is hereby signing off!

As sAfe said all the major info, i could only add that those guys are
really hardcore!

What i personaly like best is their attitude and choice of stuff they are
playing on live act. This time they played a lot of short-short versions of
their new (unfinished?) stuff along with some very old tracks like Jericho,
HyperSpeed and Fire.

Especially on this concert, they played one finished new track which
sounded very, VERY good... there is a possibility the man playing a guitar
live was really the rummoured guy from Ministry, and you know.... he played
A LOT!

tHE PROdIGY gave me more than i could EVER imagine! Keep up the good
work!

AMIGA FINNALY GOES MULTICHANNEL!
by DoMiNAToR

Seems like Protracker 4-channel limitation has come to an end! Last few
months brought us two promising pieces of music software offering 8 or even
16 channel Hi-Quality sound: DigiBooster and CyberTracker.

DIGIBOOSTER 1.0

DigiBooster is 8-channel-only music protracker clone done by two polish
coders TAP & WALT. They developed incredibly fast 14bit mixing routine that
performs full 8-channel sound without loosing precious sound quality! But
that's not all! It is capable of importing 4-8 channel modules from all
popular PC trackers like ScreamTracker 3.1, FastTracker and TakeTracker and
still can load and use modules done in ProTracker or the old NoiseTracker.
What is really special about this program is that it can playback 8-channel
modules even on plain A1200!

DigiBooster is fully multitasked, it can handle 128 patterns, 256 song
positions and 64 samples which aren't limited anymore with 64k limit -
samples can be up to 16MB each!

User-interface is rather similar to one we all got familiar with in old
ProTracker and his clones but this time screen opens in HiRes in order to
display all 8 channels on screen. Commands used are VERY similar to
ProTrackers, most of them are the same.

Demo version is available at most boards, while full complete version can
be obtained from the authors directly at:

CYBERTRACKER 0.70 BETA

This program is still developing, but even now, it surelly promise a lot!
It should be capable of handling up to 16 channels using their original ISS
music system that can combine internal channels with mixed ones and MIDI
channels. In other words, every channel can be one of 4 internal, 16 mixed
and 16 MIDI channels!

This proggy looks promising and i hope that its author will complete it
soon!

THE AMIGA REBORN

Amiga Shopper sent along our correspondent to report on the outcome of
Escom's recent press conference in Frankfurt. The following is the result...

Manfred Schmitt, Escom Founder and Chairman of the Executive Board of Escom
AG introduced the list of 11 speakers attending the recent press conference
held by Escom at the Park Hotel in Wiesenhuttenplatz, Frankfurt on 30th May.
The speakers were there to explain Escom's intentions towards the Amiga and
its technology.

Over 60 other representatives from the European press, distributors, hardware
manufacturers and software publishers also attended the conference. The main
thrust of Escom's message was that they see the future of the Amiga as a
multimedia platform and that they want to be regarded as a multimedia
company.

FutureNet: Amiga Shopper 52, Shopper Report-The Amiga Reborn (46/178)

Manfred Schmitt is the Founder of Escom and Chairman of the Executive
Board. He holds a stake of 51 per cent of all Escom's sharesBernard Van
Tienen is a member of Escom's Executive Board. He is responsible for
worldwide purchasingPetro Tsychtschenko is the General Manager of the
newly-formed company; Amiga Technologies

Basically, Escom's primary aim is to become a leading multimedia provider
and they see the Amiga and its technology as the key to their success.

Manfred Schmidt said that since they had bought Commodore International,
Escom had been absolutely flooded with enquiries and messages of support from
Amiga users worldwide. Those users will be pleased to hear that he also
said: "We see in the Amiga the key to multimedia technologies for the
future". And he praised the Amiga's Operating System saying that it had a
"still unmatched multitasking ability".

Petro Tyschtschenko, the General Manager of Amiga Technologies GmbH made
it very clear that Escom considered the Amiga to be a superior technology and
that they were committed to resume production of the Amiga and to continue
development of hardware and software. "Commodore patents and licences are
the key to multimedia technology".

We all know that the Amiga has always been ahead of its time as a
multimedia machine, even before the term multimedia was coined - and Escom
are looking to use its technology in as many ways as possible, including
high-end graphic workstations, home multimedia machines, games machines,
within third-party multimedia applications and as the basis of a set-top box
for interactive TV.

The Amiga represents an amazing price and quality ratio with an unmatched
ability for multitasking. As Manfred Schmidt put it, "The Amiga is still a
very efficient and inexpensive computer". It has a very low consumption of
RAM and "the Amiga Operating System needs eight times less memory than
Windows, and it multitasks better than Windows". The quality of Amiga video
is outstanding - "superior to the PC" - and it can also be played straight
into TV because it is already PAL and NTSC compatible. All of which make the
Amiga the ideal multimedia machine. Escom also made it clear that the rumour
of a finished new Amiga is completely untrue. However, pr`duction of an
A4000T multimedia machine will start in September 1995 and, apparently,
20,000-30,000 of these A4000Ts are already sold out in preorders.

Production of A1200s will begin in October 1995 and Escom expect to shift
enough units of the A1200 and CD32 to meet the Christmas demand. However,
they were not prepared to commit themselves to the exact amounts of machines
that will be available at that time, or even how much they will c`st.

The names Commodore and Amiga are now to be completely separate.
Commodore is being associated with Pentium multimedia PCs and Amiga
Technologies GmbH is the new international Amiga company which is 100 per
cent owned by Escom. It will have two main divisions, one based in the US
and the other in Germany.

One of the reasons given for this separation of Commodore and Amiga is
that, apparently, 92 per cent of all PC owners in Europe recognise the
Commodore name and the excellent quality that it stands for. There are a
couple of log`s in consideration to be associated with Amigas, but Escom
haven't decided on the one to use yet. The first Commodore multimedia PC
Pentium machines will go into production this year and there will be around
50,000 to 60,000 units available at first.

Jeff Frank is the Engineering Director of Amiga Technologies. He used to
work for Commodore as their Director of DevelopmentDon Gilbreath of VisCorp,
who have granted a licence to use Amiga technology in their interactive
set-topsProf. Hartmut Esslinger is the President of Frogdesign who are a
corporate strategic design consultancy being used by Escom and Amiga
Technologies

FutureNet: Amiga Shopper 52, Shopper Report-The Amiga Reborn (113/178)

Amiga Technologies' headquarters will be based at Bensheim in Germany.
Escom are determined that the costs of their distribution network will be
tightly controlled - they are not looking for offices in each and every
territory. A US distributor hasn't been appointed yet, but talks on the
subject are under way. There are around 10,000 A4000s ready for sale in the
States. The Tianjin Family-Used Multimedia Co Ltd in China is set to
manufacture the lower range of Amigas and also the Commod`re 64.

The C64 is a success in China already, but not with a licence, Escom's
partner in China has 80 per cent of the games market over there, but they
will be concentrating on the CD32. The C64 was compared to the Volkswagen
Beetle as far as popularity and market presence went. Escom also want to
redesign the CD32 to produce a model that will be stronger competition for
the likes of Sony and their PlayStation. Amiga Technologies will produce a
multimedia range of machines with Motorola processors and the Commodore
machines will be the Intel-based Personal Computers.

Escom said they have a good relationship with Motorola and that because
Motorola only deal with IBM and Apple at the moment, they are looking for a
company that can move much more quickly to get their CPU technology into the
market. Escom have also been in close negotiation with Scala and they have
announced that the multimedia presentation and information display program,
Scala MM300, will be bundled with every Amiga sold from now on.

There are also engineers in Philadelphia working on RISC-based Amigas
with Scala and Motorola working alongside them. (Have a look at our
interviews with Scala and the review of Scala MM400 in this issue.) Escom are
also keen to be flexible with the licensing of their technology and they are
happy to grant licences to companies who want to integrate Amiga technology
in to their own products. One of the projects that Escom are interested in
for the American market is the production of set-top boxes - they have
already signed a licensing agreement with VisCorp to this effect.

Tyschtschenko isn't the only employee of Amiga Technologies who used to
work for Commodore, Jeff Frank was the Director of Engineering for Commodore
and he will be giving Amiga Technologies technical assistance with
engineering and manufacturing of Amiga-related products. In fact, the A4000T
will be like a new product because Commodore only ever built 1,000 units.

Both the A1200 and A4000 will feature the AmigaDS 3.1 operating System
and one of the first projects is to be a 68060 processor upgrade for the
A4000. Escom are also planning an A1300 with an 030 processor and integrated
CD, but this A1200 A1300 new design won't come into effect until January
1996. The AAA Chipset is a long way into development and Escom want to
pursue it, but that's all they would reveal on the subject and they have no
plans to put an Amiga card into a PC at present.

Escom are considering two alternatives to further developments for the
Amiga: a Power PC equivalent and the RISC-based machine. The Amiga's
Operating System will also be adapted to the new hardware platform. But
Escom are keen that the new machines will be still recognised as Amigas -
they are "looking to a great future for the Amiga architecture", according to
Amiga Technologies Head of Engineering, Dr. Peter Kittel.

In his closing speech, Manfred Schmitt said "We want the Amiga to succeed
again as it did in the past; we want it to be recognised as an important
player in the personal computer industry and we want it to be an interesting
alternative to other systems". Fine words indeed, and we should all be
encouraged that the Amiga will soon rise again from the ashes of liquidation.

As for David Pleasance, Colin Proudfoot and team no mention was made at
the conference. However, as MicroScope magazine (of 24th May 1995) reported,
"Commodore UK's future was in the balance last week after Escom announced it
had no need for the operation and was no longer in negatiations to buy it".

INFO ABOUT THE NEW POWER AMIGAS!

In a half-hour speech to a packed ballroom of about 500 people, Petro
Tyschtschenko (say "ta-SHEN-ko"), a very gung-ho and good English-speaking
guy, pulled up a black cloth and revealed a brand new production Amiga 4000
Tower, and also showed, cased in lucite, no less, an actual A1200 motherboard
produced by AmigaTech along with a German sales packed-A1200 full of bundled
software.

He then, with much suspense, announced the next generation Amigas will use
Motorola's PowerPC CPU and will be dubbed the Power Amiga.

Petro, along with his young Press Relations Guy, Gilles Bourdin, explained
that Escom has already spent many times its initial $12million investment in
the intellectual properties of Commodore, whom they bought out earlier this
year. That They know what the Amiga is, unlike Commodore's former top
management, and that "We didn't just buy the Amiga for Christmas." He
insisted that the Amiga is back and that development will carry on through
the last of the 68xxx processors, the 68060, and then onto the PowerPC. He
did not name any ship dates for Power Amigas of course, although scuttlebut
says expect them in early '97.

Petro further said that so far, 15,000 A1200s have been sold in Europe. Not
just shipped, sold. To customers. And that over 80,000 more are backordered
at dealers and are being made as fast as the factory can crank them out.

Amiga Tech GmbH is forming a strategic alliance with Apple Computer, since
they have already been before wher eAmiga is going, from the 68k family of
CPUs to the PPC.

After Petro spoke, Tim Jenison, Pres. of Newtek took the stage and gave a
very moving, tearful speech in tribute to Jay Miner, father of the Amiga.
This was a speech unlike anything I have ever heard Jenison give before. He
was on the verge of tears many times as he recounted his early meetings in
Los Gatos with Jay and the early Amiga engineering crew, showing them the
first Digiview pictures, how Jay was constantly amazed and thrilled at the
things developers were making his little creation do.

That's enough for now. I'm pooped.

WORLD OF AMIGA COLOGNE REPORT

Date: Sat, 11 Nov 95 02:50:03
Netherlands
WOA Cologne, day 1 (friday november 10th)

We've just come back from the World of Amiga show in Cologne; in one word:

MAGNIFICENT!

The Amiga really is back. Our impressions are reported below.

There were two halls: One for the Amiga, and one for the "other platforms"
(PC, Mac, Acorn). The "other" hall was fairly quiet, and we visited the
Amiga side mostly. Amiga Technologies logos and the much-advertised slogan
"Back for the Future" were everywhere.

A1200 Magic Packs were sold by many companies, as well as the new M1438S
monitor. Although there was relatively little new software, the atmosphere
was very upbeat--which was perfectly appropriate.

We stopped at several stands for a closer look:

AMIGA TECHNOLOGIES:

AT had a big attractive-looking stand in the middle, manned exclusively by
representatives of 3rd-party developers (4th Level Development, Haage &
Partner, Interworks, and others) in cool black T-shirts with the AT logo.
Machines were mostly high-end: Very sexy A4000Ts, all fitted with MagicWB
and ethernet/arcnet/ graphics cards etc. Next to each machine was a summary
of the goodies inside.

There were also several A1200s showing off the I-Glasses, and even one with
synthesizer keyboard for the musically inclined.

The AT stand made a very fresh, bright, professional impression. While the
machines were all equipped differently and manned by staff from different
companies, the overall look was still consistent and well-organized.

I would sure buy a computer from those people ;-)

In any case, we bought some very flashy T-shirts with the new logo. Many
people were wearing similar ones with the "Intel Outside" logo on the back,
but I don't know where they got them.

PHASE 5:

Believe it or not, the Phase 5 stand had a real PowerPC development board!
It contains two CPUs (68030 and a 604 PPC chip) and appears to be a prototype
of the PowerUp card which should be available sometime next year at prices in
the 1000-2000 DM price range. It will be available in both 603e and 604
versions.

According to a leaflet we picked up, Phase 5 is porting Exec to native PPC
code and other libraries will follow. Old programs will be run under 68k
emulation. Partners mentioned ("we are not alone") include Softwood,
Almathera and Maxon.

Let me quote some parts from an info-sheet spread at Phase5 stall:

~ The low cost PPC board will be shipped with a MPC603e 100++MHz cpu, the
high end processor card will come with a MPC604 running at 100MHZ and - when
available - even with higher speeds at 150++ MHz. Furthermore there are more
powerful processors like the real 64-bit MCP620 running with 300MHz in
development.

Even 64-Bit memoryexpansioncards and a new 64-bit local bus-system with
optional PCI-bridge should become reality on Amiga. The PPC card will first
be available for A1200 - A3000 - A4000 with prices at 1000 german marks for
the light and 2000,- german marks for the high-end version.

Furthermore Phase5 will rewrite the Amiga's execcore as PPC native code to
gain maximum performance. CybergraphX will get add-ons for multimedia and
other graphic- oriented applications. Furthermore softwaredevelopers should
get the possibility to produce highquality software running on EVERY
configuration.

There are already some well-known software companies asked to re-write their
soft- ware for the PPC like Maxon, Almathera, ProDad or Softwood. "

Commercial developers are to receive their boards early '96.

Also at the Phase 5 stand was the 2-GO! DSP card which combines four DSP
processors with a 50 MIPS RISC controller and a 100 MFLOPS FPU. Internal
data throughput is said to be 4.2 Gigabytes per second, external throughput
is 32Mb (Zorro III). The card is supposed to execute 2 BILLION instructions
per second!

The card can be used for things like encoding or decoding JPEG pictures and
MPEG animations, and realtime sound and graphics manipulations. Encoding a
JPEG picture (res. 352*240) takes only 8 milliseconds!

As the slogan said: "Where do you want to be tomorrow?"

We also learned that the 3.0 release of CyberGraphX will include 3-D
primitives. CyberGraphX 3.0 will also be available for the PowerUp and 2-GO!
boards.

MS MACROSYSTEM GMBH:

These good people were showing off their 060-based Draco with the XiPaint
graphics package which seemed to be selling like hotcakes. One machine was
quietly mixing away at some real-time video input, while the eager masses
were lining up to get the feel of Final Writer on another. It was quite an
impressive sight; pages were flying by at a speed that must have been close
to the monitor's refresh rate!

One of our "mission objectives" was to find out whether WordPerfect will run
on the Draco. The staff were very helpful and even let me run WP from my own
disk, which I had brought along for this purpose. It gave us no trouble
during our very brief test (although the representative told us this did
depend on using Topaz 8 as the screen font) and felt very responsive and
flashy compared to our "good old" WARPEngine/040/40!

MacroSystem GmbH has nothing whatsoever to do, by the way, with either
MacroSystem Development (of WARPEngine fame) or with the less well-known
company MakroSystem.

On the price list, curiously enough, was also a 33MHz "Draco 040" for DM
4495. The 060 version costs DM 5995, and includes CD-ROM and 4Mb of graphics
memory.

MUI 3.0:

Tons of pamflets told us the new version of the Magical User Interface has
now been released. It was available at Hirsch & Wolf's stand for DM 40. One
of these little pamflets was actually the first thing we saw as we came up
the stairs.

Advertized features include Bubble Help, Drag-and-Drop and many that we've
forgotten. We apologize.

MAXON COMPUTER GMBH:

We were much impressed by a video produced by Tobias Richter using their
Cinema 4D product range. Some of this stuff even looked better than Babylon
5!

For good measure we asked to see a demonstration of their C++ compiler as
well, but they weren't really planning to give any. Unfortunately no free
demo version was available either. Casually mentioning our plans to write a
report on our experiences *almost* worked miracles: On the verge of giving
us a free copy including manuals, manager Harald Schneider finally understood
that we were not writing for a magazine. More on this below.

HAAGE & PARTNER:

Out of the blue, there is a shiny new C/C++ compiler for the Amiga! It's
called StormC and comes with a very intuitive graphical user interface.
There appears to be some kind of relationship with Maxon, which Maxon's
manager didn't seem very eager to discuss--mostly due to being in a hurry, I
must add.

We got ourselves a preview version of StormC and plan to post a review later
on; unfortunately we won't be able to compare it to Maxon's compiler.
Perhaps I dropped the term "c.s.a.misc" a little too casually, giving the
manager the false impression that this was a magazine we were writing for (oh
well, if ever we do start an Amiga magazine I guess CSA Misc would be as good
a name as any other).

There was some confusion as to the relationship between StormC and Maxon C++;
according to one Maxon representative, StormC was based on the Maxon
compiler. He even told us that some requesters in StormC used the name Maxon
in stead of StormC, but searching the entire preview distribution for that
word yielded nothing. Perhaps this was just a misunderstanding.

The Haage & Partner representative said they had been working on StormC for
just under a year with a team of five programmers, but it was easier because
they used a lot of "older" code--whatever that may mean.

At any rate, the compiler looks GREAT! It has intelligent Drag-and-Drop,
clickable error messages, easy project management, an editor with syntax
highlighting, a debugger which interacts with the editor, and even resource
tracking. If SAS comes back (and I hope they will) they could face some
stiff competition from this newcomer.

AmigaOS 4.0:

Yes, you read right! A.T. is planning to push up the existing OS 3.1 with
some new features and of course bug-fixing. The A.T. employee told
something about better support for graphic cards, faster OS routines and
lotsa of new version of libs, datatypes etc. . Should be released somewhere
around february '96.

That's all folks. After today, there can be no doubt that AT is serious
about the Amiga!

SX32 REVIEW
by Daniel Barrett

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
An internal expansion that gives your CD32 almost all the
specifications of an A1200.

AUTHOR/COMPANY INFORMATION
Name: DCE Computer Service GmbH
Address: Kellenbergstr. 19a
D-46145 OBERHAUSEN
Germany
Telephone: ++49-208-633151
FAX: ++49-208-630496

LIST PRICE
449.- DM (without hard disk).

I paid only 333.- DM, since there had been a special offer
for "beta testers" until September 1.

SPECIAL HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

HARDWARE
Requires a CD-32, of course. :-)
SOFTWARE
You will need AmigaDOS.

MACHINE USED FOR TESTING
CD32
20 MB 2.5" IDE hard disk
A1010 external disk drive
AmigaDOS 3.1
CommunicatorIII
A2000 keyboard and mouse

INSTALLATION
The installation of the SX32 is very easy, but you will have to open your
CD32! You must first remove the back plate of the CD32. In a next step you
have to unscrew the screws on the bottom of it to be able to "open" the CD32.
After having done this, you can slide the SX32 onto the expansion bus.

REVIEW
At first: I wrote this review up very quickly because there seems to be
a big demand of information on the Net concerning this brand new product.

After having seen the announcements in some German magazines, I called
DCE to get more informations about the SX32. This was 2 months ago. Well,
they said that it would be available during the first week of September. So
I ordered one and got it in the mid of September. It was packed in a nice
and colorful box which contained the SX32 itself, document about the A1200,
some sort of documentation concerning the SX32 (read more about the docs
later in the review), some screws, and the 2.5" hard disk. The installation
of the hard disk was very simple. The cable was already connected to the
SX32, so I only connected the drive and fixed it in place with the provided
screws.

The SX32 has five connectors at the back side: parallel, serial, video,
VGA and disk drive port. On the expansion itself is a socket for a PS2
(72-pin) memory module, and the connector for the hard disk. You will also
see the two 8520 chips, which are also in sockets.

Ok, time to insert the SX32 into my CD32 and try it! I switched the CD32
on, and only a short time later, I did have the Workbench running on the
screen. Workbench 2.0 was already installed on the drive. Everything works
fine up to today!

FLOPPY PORT
You can connect up to three drives (DF0-DF2) to this port. It is of
course the normal 23-pin AMIGA port. It is of course also possible to boot
from the drives connected to this port.

PARALLEL PORT
Standard 25-pin port. I'm using it at the moment to connect it to my
A2000 using PARNET.

SERIAL PORT
Standard 25-pin port.

VIDEO PORT
This is a standard AMIGA RGB port (23-pin). I have connected it to my
good old A1084. You may of course use it also to connect to a Genlock.

VGA PORT
Standard VGA port (15-pin).

DOCUMENTATION
The documentation consists of 6 DIN A4 pages. Well, this isn't very
much, but it does include all the information you need to install and use the
SX32. They included the pinouts of the external ports and some information
concerning the jumper which has to be changed if you add memory. It is only
in German!

LIKES
What I most like about the SX32 is that it fits completely into the CD32.
I do have now a very small AMIGA with AGA and CD-ROM!

I tried a lot of software until today on the SX32 and had no problem at
all. As stated in some German magazines, it seems that the compatibility is
very high.

DISLIKES AND SUGGESTIONS
Well, at the moment I don't have any dislikes concerning this product.
Perhaps, they could have added a external IDE port for another hard disk. Of
course, using the SX32 makes it impossible to use an FMV (Full Motion Video)
card, but who cares, since it is nearly impossible to get such a card. ;-)

COMPARISON TO OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCTS
The only product it can be compared with is the SX-1. Since I have never
really seen such a beast (only in photos), I can't really compare the two
products. Of course there is the big difference that the SX32 is INTERNAL
and the SX-1 EXTERNAL and, in my eyes, ugly.

BUGS
None.

VENDOR SUPPORT
They do have service hotline for the users of the SX32. I have not had
to call them to date.

WARRANTY
2 years warranty.

CONCLUSIONS
The SX32 transforms the CD32 from a "game console" to a "real computer."
It is a must for every owner of a CD32 who wants to do more with his
computer.

I would rate it 5 stars of 5.

`----------> Re-Appraisal For Team 17 <----------'
""""""""""""""""""""""""

Team 17, the famous Amiga games developer, contrary to previously
released statements, have exclusively revealed to the Amiga magazine Amiga
Format that they will not, as originally intended, be leaving the Amiga.

The decision, due partly to the warm reception of Alien Breed 3D in issue
78 of Amiga Format and the rise of the game to the number one spot in the
full price Amiga 1200 chart, means that Team 17 will again be receptive to
games sent in by budding Amiga talent.

Continuing the vein good news, Team 17 also exclusively revealed to Amiga
Format plans to release a data disk follow up to Alien Breed 3D which will
rely on the original passcode book, feature a completly new set of 16 levels,
and also feature a level editor which will let players of the game do the
following: Fully design new levels of the game; incorporate new alien
graphics movements and behaviours; add new sounds, new wall, floor graphics
and new game text. Also included will be comprehensive documentation on the
first game, guides to designing new levels, and hints, tips and suggestions
to help in the first game.

No firm dates have yet been set for this release, but it's expected to
happen within the first two months of 1996. And I think that we all will
look forward to this development with optimistic excitement. Send your games
to:

Team 17,
Longlands House,
Wakefield Road,
Osset,
West Yorkshire,

THE VIRUS CHECKER NIGHTMARE (PARENTAL GUIDANCE)
By TfT / Iris

The Story witch I`m gonna tell now, is somehow true...but mostly just
fiction, but you can say it`s based on a true happening. Here is also an
important remark you must know before you read this story, I have 2
partitions on my hardrive, Work and System, System is about 20 Mb, and there
I keep all the Workbench shit.

-Me and Zany/Iris were sitting at my place with the computer, I had just
gotten my second attack of the Comander Virus, and was pisst as hell. I had
Virus Checker v5.61 and it was checking as hell, but ofcorz NOT killing
anything, hmmm..well, this got quite boring, and it was getting pretty late
too, or shall we say early, so Zany asked me if I wanted to drive him home.
OK, I`ll do that, I`ll just put the Virus Checker on the Work Partition.

Well, we went up in the car, it was dark, and kinda spooky, the shadows
from the trees were moving like slimy scary monsters who wanted to fuck you
in the ass. Anyway, I drove Zany home, and we scared eachother with stupid
stories, like on Zany`s toilet, there is a window behind the crapper and I
said,-When your sitting there shitting, you feel a cold and slimy hand on
your neck, you turn around, and this 200 year old bitch stands there saying,
-I want you Zany...he..he...he... Another thing was that when you sot on the
crapper and are shitting, you suddently feel a hand pulling your cock,
dragning you down in the dark pipes of the toilet....he..he..

Stuff like that we said. Well, it was time to go home, and I must say I
was pretty nervious when I drove home. When I got home, I ran inside the
house, noone wwas home, so this was creepy, I went down to my room, and my
Amiga, VirusChecker was checking as hell, but when I looked closer, it wasn`t
on Work anymore... It..It..It was..on SYSTEM........how the fuck.....there
were noone home, then how the fuck could it have changed partition, coz it
doesn`t do that by it selves....Now I was beginning to get really
scared...uhhhhh..

-Riiiinngggg!!!!
-Riiiiinnnnggg!!!
-Oh fuck, the phone, better go and answer, I said to myself
-sssyyyysstttemmmm!!!!..he..he...he....A dark and evil voice said
-Hello,who is this....I said, really upset.

He hung up.....

I went down again...sitting with my Amiga, but ofcorz I couldn`t do much
coz the fucking virus was still there.....I desided to play sume games from
disk, I loaded Cannon Fodder, hoping that it would calm me down... But
then.....I glanced on the window.....ooohhhh wwooooww!!!!! An ungly old
face, was pressing against the window....licking the glass..
saying......System..syysstem..he...he...he...

I pulled down the curtains...and then I ran into the living room, getting
the shooth gun....I fuled it up, and sat in the sofa, waiting for the ugly
bitch to come.....

Then, there she was, she opened the door, she looked really awfull, a
rotten naked body....her tits were hanging down to ker knees, and she kept
rubbing this hardrive against her old discusting pussy. saying nothing but
S..yyy..s..te..mmmmm...... I raised my shot gun, sayin...get the hell out of
my house, you rotten hardrive mastubating bitch.....

She smiled showing her 2 remaining teeth.....he...he...I`m gonna rape you
with this hardrive..he..he...he...she said.....I have come to punish you for
all the bad things you have done..he..he...she wispered.

-Fuck you, she-bitch(Campell, rulez)I shouthed, and shouved the shotgun up
her cunt, and fired.

-POOOOOMMMMM!!!!!

Blood, flesh, intastails, brain and stuff was all over the walls, and me...

-Ahhh...!!! good that nightmare is over.....

I went into the showe, to wash off all the discusting shit I had on me.
While I was standing there, under the waterfall, naked, I suddently feelt
brutally a finger up my asshole......ooohhhhhhchhhh!!! I screamed..!!!!!

I turned around expecting a big negro called BUBBA standing there, or
maybe the sister of the corps I just shot the hell out off....but NO.. it ws
no nightmare bitch, or huge nigger....it was....

Anna Nicole Smith...she stood there in all her beuty....I asked, why the
hell do you have your finger up my asshole......

-Hmm well, I know most guys like that......she said with a exiting voice.

-Ohh... I didn`t know hat, hmmm well I don`t like it, I feel like a
fuckin` fagget.....

-Well, then, fuck me in my asshole, you skinny computer Nerd....she said
brutally......-Well, I forced my self in to that tiny hole, while feeling her
BIG breasts....-Take me harder....she shouthed....

-Ahhh...finally those MPEGs paid off...I thought.....

In all the exightment I didn`t notice the changes witch happened to Anna.
Then I finnaly noticed it, she was getting OLd as hell, her HUGE tits looked
liked someone had piersed them, they were handing down, she could probavly
fly with em.....-System, I heard from her..

I fast as hell, pulled my dick out of that hole, and ran out of the
shower grabbing with me sume clothes....Out of the house and in to da car,
and drove off in a BIG hurry....I just drove around for a couple of hours,
untill it was light. Then I parked, and fell asleep..

I woke up sume 6 hour later, it was 3.00 PM and I thought I should be
getting home, to check out the situation....Well, nothing, no sign of OLD
Anna or anything........what happened?????? I went in to my room, Virus
Checker was on, and Work had been checked.....hmmmm maybe it was all a
traumatic dream...???who knows.....

THE WOODEN TALE
By The Ripper/Ram Jam

It all started some years ago, when pollution was a word with no meanings
and cars were just dreams set in richest's minds.

Mr. Potter was at war with a vast army of ants. Maybe you all Hardcore
readers could think this is a stupid way to begin a story, but it's
fondamental to underline Mr. Potter was at war with ants. He was an elderly
man and for some time he had lived in a small country cottage surrounded by a
few acres of pine forest. Solitude was something that Mr. Potter
appreciated. So he was very indignant when he found in his first summer in
the cottage, that he was not entirely alone. Some large ants had formed a
disciplined convoy from the doors across the kitchen, around a few chair legs
and into the larder. From there they were carrying off Mr. Potter's
favourite China tea, a few leaves at a time. In a rage the old man attacked
the tiny creatures with a slipper. He continued to hit them until there
weren't any left alive. The war began.

There were ants everywhere. Mr. Potter gave them ant poison and
attacked their huge anthill with boiling water. But they were always too
many. New Year's day Mr. Potter stuffed some fireworks into the anthill.
Calmly he lit the fireworks and after some minutes there was nothing left of
the anthill. But the ants survived until one day a friend bought him a new
type of ant poison for his birthday. It was so powerful that the next day
there were no ants to be seen. Mr. Potter looked for some, but there were
none. "What, aren't there any left at all?" he shouted. From that day Mr.
Potter never left his cottage for any reason. A few weeks later he died.
Some people in the village said that he pined for his ants. They had been
among the very few pleasures of his life. Some years later a man who was
mushrooming around the pine forest near to the old Mr. Potter's cottage
declared that he had seen a bright light. And, just after that light a
ghost, a spirit of an old man pouring some boiling waters in a hole in the
ground laughing and smiling. The legend had began.

MODEMING AROUND THE GLOBE
By The Ripper / Ram Jam

It's a common opinion that by modem-trading you can't have any social
relationship, as it seems everybody cares only to get the stuff as soon as
possible and does not bother about feelings of other human beings ! Yep, as
always that's what mass thinks, but as I'm particularly cool and clever I
always find nice sysops to chat with. That's what I did particularly in the
States and I learnt a lot of difference between my (European) way of life and
the American one. Things which seem natural and ordinary to them surprise
us. So here I'll give you a list of them, a list of things that show
perfectly which kind of topics I use to discuss with system operators around
our funny globe!

- You're expected to use the same knife at breakfast to eat your ham and eggs
with and then to spread marmalade on your toast! You can of course have an
extra knife if you ask for it!

- Drugstores not only sell medicines, they sell birthday cards, cosmetics,
clocks (?!) and 1001 other items, and they also serve food. The 'corner
drugstore' is a popular place for breakfast and snacks at any time of the day
and through till late at night.

- There's no national radio station in the United States. Every large city
has dozens of independent stations whose programmes range from twenty-four
hour 'all-news-all-the-time' to rock disc jockey shows and classical music.
Even in country areas there are three or four or maybe more stations to
listen to.

- The national sport is football but it's different from what we call
football and what they call soccer. Watching and playing football is great
fun for all the family. (Together with baseball football is one of those
sports I've never succeded to learn the rules. Maybe it's me that I'm very
dull!)

- This great country does not have many public conveniences (called 'comfort
stations' there!).

- In restaurants, Americans often carry left-over food home with them in a
'doggie-bag'. Waiters consider this quite normal, so if you can't finish
your huge steak, ask for a doggie bag for yourself!! (I tried this way in an
Italian pizzeria... No need to tell you what happened!)

These are some of the points that thunderstrucked me and I won't forget them
if one of the next years i fly to the States.

WHY PC?

Why should we all forget about the Amiga 4000/060 Tower and buy PCs?? Easy!

1) Because 8-character filenames are *FUN* for the whole family! Round up
the wife and kids, and have a game of "Guess The Filename!". Countless hours
of deciphering cplx abrvtd flnms (complex abbreviated filenames) await you
with the purchase of your new PC!

2) Windows3.1!! -Real- operating systems demand far too much of their users.
Using a dressed-up program launcher which lacks the ability to store
applications in subdirectories alleviates the user from having to remember
where he or she stored those pesky, overhyped, nonstandardized, overgrown,
RAM hungry, sluggish applications you'll come to know and love!

3) 100% Multitasking-Free! The PC makes such an excellent choice over
so-called "superior" platforms like the Amiga because the PC wont confuse
you, the user, with the difficulties involved in keeping track of several
things at the same time! TAKE YOUR TIME! You only have to worry about doing
-just one- thing at a time on your PC! Infact, hundreds of programmers at
Microsoft are busy working on new and innovative ways to prevent your PC from
being forced to "multy-task" in the future, by cleverly disguising their
efforts to protect your comfort as "General Protection Faults" and system
lock-ups! Their newest product, Windows95, will even SLOW DOWN your entire
system to allow you more time to think if you try and make your PC
multy-task! What a plus!

4) Configurability -- Lets face it. There are few things more enjoyable in
this world than sitting down with your trusty PC and having the priveledge of
changing the wide variety of IRQ settings, jumpers, CMOS settings, .BAT
files, hex addresses, COM port assignments, and memory reigons that are
available to you as a PC user. Don't let anybody tell you that it's no fun!
Just imagine all the enjoyment you'll have spending quality-time with your
machine, and growing emotionally closer to your motherboard. You'll begin to
care for your PC just like the indigent, scenile, bed-ridden vegetable of a
Grandmother you never had as a kid! But wait, theres more! The fun doesn't
end there! Luckilly, the "standards" in the PC community are changed
radically about every 8 months, so you'll have endless fun trading
configuration tips and tricks with your friends! Not since the ALTAIR 8008
has there been a computer with such a wide variety of interface, memory,
sound, and graphics standards! Now, YOU can enjoy the FUN and EXITING
options which other so-called "superior" platforms like the Amiga leave out,
or dont even have!

5) Graphics power! Today's PC's are actually capable of SCROLLING!!
Yes--you heard me, an entire graphic image can me smoothly moved up and
down!! Hold on to your hats--thats not all! Today's PC can even scroll
graphics HORIZONTALLY! Let your imagination take you new horizons with this
incredible new graphics capability. You'll finally be able to tell all those
mean Apple II & C64 user's who the REAL boss of 1995 is! Imagine the thrill
of discovering that software you previously own can be easilly (only 2 hours
of work!) reconfigured to use the $400 graphics card needed to do smooth
scrolling !

6) Sound power! You'll be reminded of gentle summers around the campfire
once you hear the authentic pop & crackle of a typical PC's sound system.
You'll swear you were hearing the bell's of St. Mary's when you experience
the 1-bit INTERNAL SPEAKER which comes STANDARD in every PC! Thats right--no
expensive add-on's here! You'll also enjoy the pleasure of re-configuring
every piece of software you own to use a seperate sound card in the future!
The wide variety of poppy and scratchy sound cards available for the PC will
push the envelope of sound performance available on ANY personal computer!

7) Many different program interfaces to learn and enjoy! It can be awfully
boring for so called "superior" platform users like Amiga fanatics to be
forced to use the SAME way of loading and saving files, running programs, and
selecting options. With the PC, each application you use has a DIFFERENT and
FUN way of accessing options, and files! Each application has its own
distinct look, feel, and personality! You'll become to attached to your
new-found friends as you spend even more quality time getting to know them!
Now YOU can be the "individualist", running the --truly-- "creative"
computer! Forget about those Amiga guys!

ESCOM ANNOUNCE WORKBENCH FOUR

At a recent press conference, Escom have, at last, admitted to the
existance of Workbench 4 which they say is being developed to bring the Amiga
upto todays GUI standards. So far, it has successfully passed the beta
testing stage, and only a few major bugs remain within the code. The final
product will be finished in time to be included with the new Amigas when they
hit the streets.

The standards of Graphic User Interfacing have taken an enourmous leap
forward recently with the release of the awesome "Windows 95" by software
giants MicroSoft. This GUI-driven software has the power and speed that
todays computer users have dreamed about for years.

David Pleasance of Commodore Inc. told us "It [Windows 95] really is an
amazingly powerful piece of software, and the Amiga platform has been crying
out for something like this for some time now - that's why Escom asked us to
design Workbench 4. Our spec was simple; `Bring the old Workbench 3.1 upto
Windows 95 standards.' We`ve had three teams working round the clock to push
the product passed the beta stage on time, and I`m glad to say that it will
soon be here, and every bit as good as Windows 95."

In effect, Escom are now starting to target the Amiga at business'. By
introducing a Windows-based GUI, the millions of PC owners can be instantly
at home on a somewhat unfarmilliar machine. But to their advantage, they
will have the power of the Amigas custom chips at their disposal - something
which the PC can never hope to have. Mr. Pleasance's aim was to design a
GUI enviroment that was akin to Windows in every aspect, down to the finest
detail.

"Take the installer for instance. We have worked very hard to get it to
feel just like the Windows installer. For a start it`s written in AMOS to
make it as slow as possible, and it's as unhelpful as we could have made it -
with all the text in Manderin. The bit I`m proud of most," he continued, "is
the end part of the installer - it picks two numbers at random, and if
they`re not the same it uninstalls Workbanch 4! You can still get that great
Windows `Spent-three-hours-installing-the-thing-and-it-hasn't-worked'
feeling. It's the first time in the history of computing that another
machine has been able to emulate this - It's a true breakthrough!" he
boasted.

We asked about the system requirements for the new Workbench, would it
still work on an A500 with 512k of memory? "Goodness, no!" he exclaimed, "It
needs a A4000/060 running at 50Mhz, with a 50Mhz FPU, and 34 meg of memory
even before it will even consider running. But when you consider what it's
doing, you realise that it has taken true programming tallent to make such a
low-spec machine run such powerful software."

Escom are planning to start an impressive 80m pound advertising campaign
in the UK alone. "The campaign will target everyone," said Johnathon
Anderson, Escoms cheif promoter, "from 12 year old games players right the
way through to the biggest business' in the UK. We are confident that people
will take to the machines and Workbench 4 like ducks to water."

We asked Bill Gates, MicroSoft Owner and Computer Guru if he felt
threatened by Escom's moves. "No, not really," he said, "Windows 95 has a
feel to it that all PC owners have grown up with. Your Workbench 4 might
*LOOK* like Windows 95, but it won't gel with the serious PC owners. They'll
notice the slight differences and come back to the software they know and
love."

We put it to David Pleasance that this might be true. Could Windows 95
users ever feel at home using Workbench 4?

"Well, if they don't then they could try installing some of our special
commodities that give Workbench 4 a more Windows-like feel. There's the
`Mouseflicker' (tm) commodity, which makes your mouse-pointer flicker every
time you move the mouse, and the `HardWareCrash' (tm) commodity that will
inform you that you can't load your software due to your incompatable
hardware everytime you try and load something."

Escom hope to produce a GUI enviroment such that existing Windows users
can change system without having to learn new skills and techniques. In
doing this they have already received over 14,000 advanced orders from
current PC based companies, hoping to upgrade their existing systems for the
fraction of the price they would pay for a new high-spec PC and Windows 95.

"We're very proud of Workbench 4 so far. We feel that it will breath new
life into the Amiga, and help generate the necessary sales we need to bring
the Amiga back into mainstream computing."

"The box is as big as a garage, too." they added.
