by our favorite pirate groups. It is produced by the Stellar 7 crew, meaning

it is structured, organized and written by most of our console division

writters. This is our debut issue for October. It includes some great Reviews

on the latest games released last month, two multi-reviewer reviews on two

hottest games. Also included in the mag are an article on the history of

console RPGs, and a monthly top ten console groups. We hope you like the

effort we put in making this console emag and will continue reading our

future issues.

Someone stole ToonTown's 3 most valued treasures!
The Sorceror's Hat, Mermaid's Voice and Magic Lamp were stolen from the
Town Museum. But never fear, Bonkers is here!

Bonkers is Capcom's newest episode in a long history of Disney's cartoon-
based games. So, even if the game indeed has great graphics and animations,
there's really nothing new in this game... Same types of attack as in most
Disney's games (Jump on head & shoot stuff), same game design and "feel"
and unfortunately, same very low difficulty level.

Even so, Bonkers STILL IS another very good game by Capcom that most
people will enjoy.

This game is very unusual. It's an action\puzzler similar really only
to The Lost Vikings, and bearing a superficial resemblence to Jelly Boy.
The character, a ball can change forms to a slime, a bowling ball etc..
to get through the various puzzles. A European conceived and marketed
game that really is a dissapointment. Don't get it unless you're a fan
of that genre.

Set in ancient Transylvania, Nosferatu is a mixture of FlashBack
and Dracula. Of course when it comes to Dracula there's always
the same plot of : - Dracula kidnap babe,
- Hero goes into spooky castle,
- Hero Kills Dracula,
- Hero save babe.

Well this one isn't different from that plot. What makes this game
better than most others of this kind is the combination of detailed
animations, cool backgrounds and a Horror theme with some gory
graphics (cool!). This is one of the better games released this year.

Remember Super Ghouls N' Ghost, well here is some sort of sequel with the
main character as Firebrag, that annoying demon in SGN'G. Firebrag is back
, and this time meaner than ever. In revenge against Phalanx for stealing
his crests on the sheild and injuring him. In this quest you will have to
find all the stones and try to bring peace to the demon's land. Firebrag
can change in many forms from swimming (TIDAL GRAGOYLE), to the ground
(GROUND GRAGOYLE), to the air (AERIAL GRAGOYLE), and to the SGN'G gargoyle
(LEGENDARY GARGOYLE).

Many shops are available for you to equip yourself with potions
, talisman's and even a gaming shop where you can win money by using
your many different skills. You also have an option screen in which you
can choose which gragoyle you want to use, which potions you want to drink
, which spell you want to cast, also which talisman you want to use and
it will also display a huge sheild to see which crests you have. After
some certain levels you will see a huge map. In this map, you can choose
where you want to go next by flying and landing on that area. Be careful not
to try to land on hard places before you've reached most of the gragoyle's
ability.

If you finish this one and want more, go out and get Gargoyle's quest on
NES or on gameboy.

I'm impressed by this latest effort by Enix. Think of it as Dragon Ball meets
Phantasy Star. The graphics are very nicely done in a Breath of Fire style,
and almost everything is interactive. Plenty of classic Japanese gags in this
game. One thing I didn't like was the difficulty to maneuver in almost Mario 3
type map, annoying. However, this balanced off by your character's ability to
dash, a feature I wish was available in all RPGs... Oh well, It's no Dragon
Warrior 5, but a fun game nonetheless.

ON FINAL FANTASY 3!

[---+ STeLLaR +------------------------------------( Salamander )-----------]

Hey what can I say to one of the biggest game of this year? FF3 is
a top-notch game in every aspect. Graphically, it is gorgeous. The backgrouds
are realistic and colourful. Individual characters are beautifully-drawn.
The animations in the battle are just awesome. Comparing to other RPGs, the
fighting scene is incredibly detailed. There are different animations when
using different weapons, spells, and tools. Even the animations for monsters
are very detailed too. This gives you a busy, interesting, exciting fighting
scene unlike other RPGs that only give boring text messages in battles.
Musically, I must admit that it has the best musical score ever in a snes game.
The music is so atmosphere that capture you attention constantly. There is
no digitized speech or special stereo sound effect but all tunes in the game
are definitely masterpiece. There are a lot of different tunes in particular
places: cave, battle, town, pub etc so the music is not too repetitive for the
player. Now it comes to the strongest part of the game and it is which keeps
me playing hours and hours. This is the gameplay. FF3 has an excellent plot
that is very interesting unlike many other RPGs. The player plays different
roles in different times instead of all Non-Player-Characters join you just to
help you to fight in battles. Each character has his/her own story and you
play upon it at a particular period of time. That idea is very clever I find.
The controls are silky and the scrollings during gameplay are smooth. It plays
like a dream. Furthermore, the size of the game is huge that I am not even
half way through after hours of playing. FF3 certainly can last for a very,
very long time and for those who are looking for long-lasting rpg, this is
definitely the biggest rpg you can possibly find on SNES. Perharps FF3 is not
the biggest game of the year due to the fierce competitions with Super Punch
Out, Dragon Quest VII and Donkey Kong Country but personally, I would vote for
the best RPG ever released on any game system.

What can you say about Final Fantasy III except that it's not only beyond a
shadow of a doubt the best RPG on the SNES but it's arguably the best
GAME on SNES. This is as close to perfection as you can get on the SNES.
I mean what more could you ask for? Everything is in here: A quest spanning
literally dozens of hours, airships, chocobos, romance, ninjas, breathtaking
256 color graphics, another beautifully varied soundtrack by Nobuo Uenetsu,
enhanced play mechanics and fight techniques, brilliant characterization, the
best storyline i've ever seen in an RPG, great dialogue due to Ted Woolsey's
flawless text translation; this is simply the most incredible RPG in existence
and will be virtually impossible to top. This game has scenes that you will
never ever forget like the phantom train, the opera showdown (classic), the
leap off of barren falls, the showdown between the empire and the returners
over posession of the frozen esper, and countless other unforgettable moments.
If you were like me in thinking that the storyline or characters in Final
Fantasy II could never be topped, think again; we were both wrong! The
characters are just as interesting as Cecil and his gang were. And the
storyline beats Final Fantasy II hands down. Just to bring on waves of
nostalgia, the designers have included the Final Fantasy 'crystal' theme song
and the chocobo tune. I haven't touched one other game since this game's
release! All I care about is venturing into the unexplored lands of the
Final Fantasy world. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, that this is
simply an audio visual, tour-de-force with unparralled depth and appeal.
Simply awe-inspiring.

I was not a big RPG fan until Final Fantasy 3 came out. FF3 made me realise
on what I was missing in RPG's. With its beautiful drawn pictures and fluid
animations and the beautifully composed music, how could you resist. Final
Fantasy 3 shows what the nintendo can do, with different ways of playing
the game, different story lines, even as playing another character's quest.
The game play is very good and the back ground music fits in the beautiful
backgrounds. All this together makes this game irresistable. The fun part
about this game is you could play for hours and hours and still enjoy it.
One very good thing about this game is that it is 24 megs with a huge quest,
you could even finish the game and start over and get a lot of different things
on your second quest. One thing I must add is that the game is very addictive,
once you start your quest you will not be able to put your controller down.

ON SUPER PUNCH OUT!

[---+ STeLLaR 7 +----------------------------------( Deputy Dogg )----------]

Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! was a classic in the true sense of the word. It
ranked right up there with other NES greats like Zelda and SMB. The game was
filled with fascinating characters, each with their own secret weakness. It
took 7 long years, but finally we are blessed with Super Punch Out!! on the
SNES. So does the sequel live up to its legendary predecessor? Well that's a
toughie. Just like the original MTPO!!, the game looks great. The fighters are
absolutely huge and the colors are bright and colorful; true to the original.
It's a shame they didn't use Mode 7 effects for some of the attacks or
something. Little Mac has been replaced by some transparent anime type guy,
who looks pretty 90's like. The whole game tries to capture some kind of new-
age feel, and stuff like the tilted letters when you go down for the count
contribute to this atmosphere. The music seems kind of strange at first, but
it's an acquired taste. The more you play, the better the music sounds. I
particularly like the world circuit tune; it's an adrenaline pumping fighting
beat. It would have been nice if they had put at least one song from MTPO!!,
just to give you that feeling of familiarity and nostalgia that is so
prevalent in SNES conversions of SMB, Metroid and Zelda, to name a few. The
characters in MTPO!! were so cool, I remember them to this day. Soda Popinski,
Glass Joe, Don Flamenco, ahhh... The good 'ol days! So how are the characters
in SPO!!? Well, they ARE interesting, there's no doubt about that, but whether
or not we'll have the same kind of fond memories of these characters as we do
of the original cast of fighters remains to be seen. It is, however, doubtful.
On to the play mechanics. They HAVE evolved slightly, but no groundbreaking
alterations have been made. Only minimal use of the SNES joypad was made,
which is a bit of a shame, but what we've got is still frenzied boxing action
at its best. What I can't really grasp, is why the designers left out such
crucial elements as rounds to divide the fight, a coach that gives hints and
advice, and the judge's decisions like in MTPO!!. The whole rounds thing was
great because you'd have situations where you'd already been knocked down
twice in the round and you needed to avoid getting hit for another minute or
so, as to avoid the TKO. Or another exciting scenario was when you needed to
knock your opponent down once more before the end of the round to score the
TKO victory. In between rounds was great, because you'd see the physical state
of the combatants. You'd also get advice from your trainer and receive either
taunts or pleas from your opponent. The decision aspect was great too, as it
allowed for great controversial finishes ('No! I should've won that match!
Stupid Judges!). Luckily, the whole'save game that records your fastest times'
capability tries to compensate for it. They should have beefed the game up to,
say, 20 Megabits, in order to have included the old features as well as the
new ones. The basic game play components are identical to MTPO!! and altough
you might get your ass whipped at first, pretty soon your Punch Out!!
instincts will resurface and YOU'LL be doing the ass kicking. When I started
playing, I kept punching repeatedly and even though this worked on Gabby Jay
(I love his pathetic war cry 'Yay.') pretty soon I was kissing mat. It all
came back to me then, I remembered that unlike any other game since MTPO!!,
this game requires you to wait until you see subtle changes in your opponent's
posture or facial expression, and then dodge and strike. More games should
consider using this type of play mechanics, since it has been severly
underused. Never have I seen a game that requires as much concentration as
SPO!! does. If someone's talking to me while I'm playing, I'll probably lose.
It's hard to chew gum and play this game at the same time, that's how much
concentration is required. Another quality this game has is the addictiveness.
This game can compete with the best of puzzle games in this respect. Every
time you think you're done playing, you say to yourself 'let's go one more
round!'. Sometimes when I'm out, I get this sudden urge to play it. Not many
games can do that to me. So I guess the bottom line is this: SPO!! isn't the
most innovative game around, but it does offer more great Punch Out!! action,
action you haven't had since 1987. The downside of SPO!! is the fact that
even though the game faithfully recreates the action of the NES classic it
doesn't FULLY capture its 'feel'. Killer game, though, play it.

Whenever a game comes out from Nintendo, you can expect something good. Super
Punch Out is not an exception. Everything you have wished for is all here:
cool graphics, big sounds and solid gameplays. Fans of NES's Punch Out won't be
be disappointed and will get used to the controls very quickly. However, the
game is pretty much the same of the original with the same gameplay and control
mechanism. I think the game is nothing more than NES's Punch Out with better
graphics and sounds. Being a fan of Punch Out, Super Punch Out is still very
good and playable but imagine the time we have waited and with 16megs, I expect
more than better graphics and sounds. Adding more game modes and 2 player
options would make the game even more attractive. Overall, this is still the
best boxing game on all systems and a solid action game to check out.

What can I say? Having played BOTH 8 bit punch outs, the arcade version,
and Super Punch Out, I can truthfully say SPO is the best. However, this year
(Actually just this PART of the year) we've seen and will see games like
Final Fantasy III, Donkey Kong Country, and SSF2. And this is just SNES.
Undoubtably the best boxing game around that combines action with simulation.
Every fighter has his name announced and has a taunt. Ooodles of speech in
this one kids! What I missed? Mario as the ref like in the old Mike Tyson's
Punch Out. Talking to your coach between rounds. More of a sequel to the
arcade game then the NES game.

[---+ STeLLaR 7 +----------------------------------( Sub Zero )-------------]

Well Finnaly you Super Nintendo owners can play Super Punch Out. This has to
be the best boxing game ever created on any machine that I have tried. This
is the only game that has kept my attention all the way through. What first
impressed me was the digitized speech installed for every Boxer. The boxers
and yourself are beautifully animated, and the fighters are so huge, colorful
and even hilarious. The music could try to get on your nerves but once you
start fighting someone like the clown or Dragon Chan you will even forget
there is music. Each fighter has different characteristics and skills. It's your
job to fight all of them all the way through. The further you get the harder
they get, so you must find techniques that will allow you to protect yourself
and to hit a couple of devastating combo's to your opponent. Another cool
feature is the Power Bar on the bottom. When it's full, you can execute many
different power moves. But be careful, timing is everything in this game. With
all these new features added and upgrades on almost every aspect makes this
game a classic. I did not play the old NES version much but I know that this
one is awesome.

Role Playing Games ...A HISTORY...

RPGs are, in my opinion, the best value in video games. They offer long
quests, involving gameplay, and plot development. As a writer, these are
things I can appreciate. RPGs began in the US in the late 70's on the
Apple home computers. Among the first was Alkabeth, written by the famous
Lord British, Richard Garriot, which was later incorporated into the
great granddaddy of RPGs, Ultima. It was Ultima, and its contemporaries
that first made it to Japan where the RPG became an art form.

The first "MADE IN JAPAN" RPGs appeared on the NEC 8800 and later 9800
series PCs. Incompatible with IBM PCs the NEC PCs held and still hold a
50% market share in Japan. In recent years AST has made 16 MHz IBM\NEC
compatibles, but these were never available in North America. The first
video game systems to receive a true RPG were the 8 bit Sega and Nintendo
consoles (although the far earlier Intellivision had Advanced Dungeons
and Dragons, a fantasy action adventure game that was way ahead of it's
time, when I get nostalgic I'll sometimes play it just for fun, and the
ColecoVision had some nice adventure games, but with no saving ability).

One of the most groundbreaking games was The Legend Of Zelda, that
appeared on the NES in July 1987, and introduced adventure games to the
NES playing public (a large amount of people when you consider that
approximately one third of American households have an NES). This game
was a wild run away hit, and is still on the Nintendo Power charts even
after 7 years (and isalways in the top 5). The sequel, which came out in
1989 was a disappointment, it had more in common with side scrolling
adventure games like Y's and Zeliard then the 3/4 view Legend of Zelda.
The Legend of Zelda featured not one but TWO involving quests, a variety
of dungeons as well as a large overworld, many weapons, and many other
aspects never before seen in a home game.

Zelda spawned not only 3 sequels (one on the NES, one on the SNES, and
most recently one on the GameBoy), but an animated TV series, and a
breakfast cereal, and 2 games on the Phillips CD-I system.
Zelda also inadvertently created an entire genre of action/adventure
games, including a beautiful game on the Sega Master System, that never
made it in America due to the death of the Master System. The game: Golden
Axe Warrior, designed to capitalize on both the successes of the Zelda
and Golden Axe series. The result: a Master System game whose graphics
are unparalleled by all SMS games except Sonic The Hedgehog.

One of the first RPGs to appear on the NES was Dragon Warrior, Japan's
Dragon Quest. Released in 1989 by Nintendo it was a hit, mostly because
it was given away with subscriptions to Nintendo Power.
The rest of the NES Dragon Warriors (2-4) were released by their creator,
Enix, in the US. Ironically, Dragon Quest 3, that came out in the US
only around 1991 was previewed in the first issue of Nintendo Power, way
back in 1988, when the US was playing Zelda and Super Mario Bros. 2, and
Double Dragon, and Contra were hot in the arcades.

The Sega Master System also had some incredible RPG and Action/Adventure
titles such as the first Y's game from Nihon Falcom, Golden Axe Warrior
from Sega, King's Quest 4 from Milton Bradley, Ultima IV, Golvellius, and
Miracle Warriors from Sega, and of course Sega's Phantasy Star, the first
Science Fiction RPG. Oh yes, not all RPGs are those medieval wizards and
warriors type games. There are also science fiction, martial arts,
historical, and legend based RPGs.

The Famicom disk system created a new type of game for the Japanese
market, a cross between western text parser games like the Sierra games
(King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest) and traditional RPGs. These
could best be described as interactive stories. Many of these interactive
stories were based on traditional Japanese folk tales so therefore never
made it to the US. These traditional stories did do one thing however,
they brought Japanese characters like Ninjas into RPGs.

Today, in addition to medieval fantasy type games like Dragon Warrior,
Dragon Slayer and Y's, there are games set in old Japan (Inindo: Way of
The Ninja, Far East Of Eden series), fantasy Kung-Fu worlds (Dragon Ball
Z, Super Ninja Boy), Arabia (Defenders of Oasis), Sci-Fi worlds (Phantasy
Star, Robo Trek), Horror (Spike McFang), 14th century Europe (Uncharted
Waters series) and everything else...

(Final Fantasy series, Live A Live, Ranma 1/2).

Unfortunately for us, Japanese style RPGs don't exist in large
quantities on PC. At one point Sierra released Zeliard, a classic and
beautiful side scrolling RPG from Game Arts, as well as the great
Mysterian, one of the finest RPGs to ever come off of the NEC 8800. The
first of the Y's games was released in English on the PC (It's only
available alone on PC and SMS, and with Y's 2 on TG-CD), and I'll
release it around if the demand is high enough. I'd be interested to
know what Japanese games have been released on PC, so don't hesitate to
EMAIL with any information or questions.

Have a nice day.....
