(_/his is an exciting time for us at LiveWire. We're expanding our range,
improving our coverage and breaking new ground. Over the next few months, you
will be seeing new features, new contributors, and new departments, and we'll
have contests, hints and tips, reader interaction, and more than a few
surprises.
New this month is "A Pleasure Doing (ShareWare) Business" -- the first in an
ongoing series of articles highlighting the vast resource base of shareware
software available on GEnie. Each month, a new group of programs, utilities or
applications will be examined. It will give you an inside track on one of the
fastest-growing and most cost-effective software options available: Shareware.
Next month: Letters to LiveWire, in which you, our readers, talk back -- with
opinions, observations, or questions about LiveWire, GEnie, and
telecommunications in general. If you want to talk back to us, send your
letter to our GE Mail address LIVEWIRE, or send it via Internet mail to
livewire@genie.geis.com. (Please note that letters may be edited for
readability, accuracy, and length.)
\\\ The Ides of March The cryptic message Julius Caesar received about the
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Ides of March has long been believed to be a
forewarning of his assassination. Truth is, it was a note from his
accountant, reminding him that it was tax time.
Luckily, we can be more direct. To help you avoid the perils that faced
Julius, this month we've compiled an informative array of articles covering
everything from personal tax preparation to tax accounting software, tax
utilities and electronic versions of IRS forms and publications. All available
right on GEnie, of course.
Not everything is grim and serious, however. Just check out Jim Meyer's
humorous look at tax time at the Wide House with President Phil, his wife
Pillory and vice-president Al Gorithm for some much-needed comic relief as
well as some helpful resources from the Amiga *StarShip* RoundTable.
On a slightly different note, Donn King's "ARTIST: Winter Blues and the
Sneeze ARTIST" takes an over-the-shoulder look at medical information in the
Dialog Database Center; Nina Lee Braden reviews the GEnie-wide celebration of
Native American culture from March 16 to 26; Mark Hiatt reveals "How to Pay
Taxes and Have Fun Without Really Trying" in his GEnie Magic column; Keith
Garret introduces two recent additions to the GEnie family -- the Windows 95
News Highlight Center and the Microsoft Press RoundTable; and Donn King shows
how resources in the Home Office & Small Business RoundTable can help small
business owners succeed in the 90's in "It's All Your Business."
You'll also find a close-up look at GemStone III's new Engagement System
in the GEnie Gamer column, and explore the nooks and crannies of GEnie in
Joanna Strohn's always-fascinating NetSearch.
Until next time: Work hard. Play harder.

It's All Your Business \\

(_/ou're always in business. It's just that sometimes you sell your skills,
talents and goods directly to a retail customer, and sometimes you sell
through a middleman -- like, say, an employer. The IRS may insist on a
distinction, but we all know that you put your effort in, you risk something,
and you get something back.
Whether your business involves selling from a storefront, working out of
your home, or punching a clock, the 90's hold a challenge for you. GEnie's
resources can help you meet that challenge.
\\\ On Your Own Perhaps you own a small business, even run it from home --
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ maybe in your spare time while you continue to collect a
regular paycheck. The Home Office/Small Business RoundTable can provide you
with help and answers.
Have you just started a business, and need to find customers? Go to the
HOSB Bulletin Board, Category 3 "Finding Customers: Sales, Marketing &
Advertising Tips", Topic 2 "Help finding your first customers." You'll find
real firing-line experience there: wholesale sources, janitorial services,
oodles of stuff about working from home -- it's all there.
For instance, Sally Waite said, "I hope someone can help with this
question, because I've been asking around everywhere and getting nowhere.
"I would like to do some mail order advertising in those local shopper
papers that come out once a week. Is there somewhere I can get a list of these
publications? Ideally, I'd like a list of every one of them in the country,
but that's probably not possible."
A lively discussion followed in which other members suggested realistic
sources for the information she wanted, and also asked what her product was (a
book), and why she chose to market it via mail order. She explained, and
added, "Every time I say I'm finished, I find more information and I don't
want to leave anything out."
Jim Peabody replied, "Get a book, get a name, get it going! One thing at
a time, build on each step. Get started with the first book."
And Bobber Follmer added, "Do not wait any longer; go for it now. There
is an old Turkish proverb that goes: 'IF and WHEN were planted...Nothing came
up!'"
How could you not profit from such encouragement and experienced advice?
Two or three times a week HOSB holds Real-Time Conferences in which you
can interact with newcomers and old-timers in businesses of all sizes and
types. Gain from their experience and share yours.
The Software Library practically bursts with useful shareware, text
files of information, and archives from bulletin board discussions.
Check out files like 5707, SD301.ZIP, a telephone autodialer. It has a
call timer, enhanced log (saves name, time, date, phone number, any notes you
took), unlimited number of names and numbers, automatic re-dialing, credit
card calls, and more.
File 5751, CA100D.ZIP, is a full working demo of the popular custom
legal form generator. And File 5764, PAYWIN11.ZIP, is the 1995 version of
PayWindow v1.1 from ZPAY Payroll Systems Inc., a full-featured payroll program
that can pay by any pay period for hourly, salaried, commissioned, or even
contract workers. It can print checks, W2 forms, 1099-MISC, and other tax
forms.
These are only three of hundreds of files uploaded just in recent
months. More are being added all the time.
\\\ Business Can Be Taxing Speaking of taxes, you have to pay income tax
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ regardless of how you make the income. Somehow,
putting "none of your business" on the form just doesn't work.
The Tax RoundTable provides a better alternative with electronic
versions of IRS forms and publications. It also allows GEnie members to share
opinions and concerns about taxes.
Remember, though, the information available in the RoundTable is general
in nature and should not be taken as individualized advice. If you need
individual advice you should consult your own accountant or tax preparer.
The RoundTable offers a lot of other benefits as well. As the opening
banner says, you can:
* Download official IRS publications, forms and instructions (see the
RoundTable for practical concerns involved with viewing and printing)
* Discuss tax issues with other GEnie users
* Download privately developed tax shareware programs and templates
* Talk with other users about tax issues
* Talk shop with your peers if you are an accountant or tax preparer
Bulletin Board topics cover all ranges of tax and accounting questions. A
weekly Real-Time Conference provides live interaction. And the Software
Library offers text files of IRS forms, instructions, and publications, plus
shareware and freeware programs to help you deal with your taxing tasks.
\\\ 9 to 5 and Staying Alive You may be in an entry-level job, or you may
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ be in middle or even higher management. You
could use the WorkPlace RoundTable, too.
As with most RoundTables, you can choose to use the Bulletin Board, the
Software Library, the Real Time Conference area, or a number of other options.
In the Bulletin Board you'll find categories dedicated to The Changing
Workplace; Where the Jobs Are -- And How to Get Them; Climbing the Career
Ladder; Forum For Employees; The Daily Grind; Workplace Regulations; The Care
and Feeding of Employees; Management Trends, Tips, Issues; Incentive Programs;
Security in the WorkPlace; Facilities Management; Having FUN in the WorkPlace;
Business Trips and Travel; and the Peer-to-Peer(TM) Network. As you can see,
just about every area of day-to-day work is covered.
\\\ What's Happening: Your Business Happenings in the world at large can
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ have a great impact on your business
life. Dow Jones & Company, Inc., publishers of The Wall Street Journal and
Barron's, certainly understand this. Dow Jones News/Retrieval provides access
to over 50 databases containing company and industry news and information, as
well as the full-text of hundreds of national and regional publications.

\\\ Invest in Yourself Of course, when you think about Dow Jones you think
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ about the stock market and other investments. If you
invest for your own financial well-being, you really should check into Charles
Schwab Brokerage Services on GEnie.
Independent investors recognize Schwab as the leader in cutting edge
technology for fast securities trading at a discounted price. GEnie gives you
an extra edge: Every online trade executed on GEnie receives a 10% commission
discount off the already low Schwab rate. It's not cheap (read low-quality)
service, though; Charles Schwab Brokerage Services gives you the
professional-quality resources you need to succeed as a self-sufficient
investor right from your own PC:
* Trade in stocks, bonds, options, and mutual funds.
* Enter special trade conditions on your orders, such as Limit and Stop
prices, All or None, Do Not Reduce instructions, and Minimum Quantities.
* Receive real-time quotes direct from the floor of the exchange, along
with dividend histories, P/E ratios, earnings per share information,
and yearly high/low price data.
* Check trade confirmations online.
* Review detailed account balance and position data in your Schwab
Brokerage Account.
* Cancel or change any outstanding trade orders, regardless of whether
they were placed online.
Information Age Bottom Line
You've heard it said that we live in the information age. But survival
and success don't depend on the mere amassing of information. To act
successfully, you have to get the information in a useable form. With
resources like these, you can do that and realize a tremendous savings in time
as well. Now that's information worth knowing.

\_/\_/hen you look at the price of business software today, enthusiasm can
fade quickly. Buying off the shelf can be costly, especially if you end up
getting something you don't like or can't use.
Luckily, as a GEnie member, you can find lots of viable alternatives in
the many Software Libraries in the form of shareware.
Shareware is a unique marketing concept. Through trust and good will
(and a promise of better things to come with registration), you are able to
fully evaluate a product before you buy it. If you like what you see, you can
register for a relatively low cost; if it doesn't meet your needs, you simply
delete it from your disk without incurring any expense other than download
time.
The quality of much shareware available on GEnie is comparable to any
shrink-wrapped product. Programs are updated and upgraded on a regular basis.
And with thousands of files to choose from, the selection surpasses even the
largest of software stores.
Let's take a look at some examples.
\\\ SmartDraw In the IBM PC RoundTable Library (Page 615, Keyword IBMPC), I
\\\\\\\\\\\\\ found a nifty little graphics program called SmartDraw (File
37019 SMRTDRAW.ZIP) in Library 15, ASP Shareware. If you're looking for a
business graphics program which can be used to create colorful flow charts,
system designs, time and organizational charts, forms and simple
illustrations, then this is it.
SmartDraw is definitely user-friendly. When you run the program you are
greeted with a Welcome window where you can scroll through 21 tips on using
it. If you want more information on any one of them, just click the Detail
Button and a Windows Help screen will appear, with full explanations and
graphic examples.
There is also a Hints option (which you can turn off) that displays
information about a function or tool the first time you use it. I made little
use of the hints offered, however, because the program was so easy to use.
SmartDraw looks and feels a lot like Word for Windows. There are two
tool bars at the top of the screen -- one with the expected editing and text
formatting buttons, the other containing line and shape icons. To use the
various shapes, you simply 'drag and drop' them onto the page, where you can
change their shape and size, add color fills, text, shadows, and so forth.
There's even a small window containing sixteen "SmartDrawings" that you
can use to spice up your work. Registered versions come with an additional 100
SmartDrawings and full-color clip art.
This program was well thought out. Drawings can occupy up to 50 square
inches over several pages, but an overlap option in the Print Setup simplifies
paste-up and saves paper when printing the images.
SmartDraw requires Windows 3.1 and a 386 (or better) IBM-compatible. You
are allowed to use it for 30 days. The cost of the registered version is
$35.00 -- a great price and an excellent choice for a business drawing
program.
\\\ Time and Chaos Look in Library 11 of the Home Office/Small Business
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ RoundTable (Page 370, Keyword HOSB) and you will find
Time and Chaos (T&C) in File 5803 TC45MIN.EXE.
Time and Chaos is a powerful yet easy to use Windows organizer and daily
planner, ideal for anyone who wants to spend less time juggling and more time
relaxing.
T&C is loaded with features. It can import ASCII text to the Phone Book;
backup and restore data; view calendars by the day, week, month, or year;
create customized and detailed reports; link to a Windows-based word processor
(like Word, AmiPro or WordPerfect) for mail-merge and labeling, or generate
timebar charts for each month (a handy way to illustrate just how overworked
you really are).
T&C can also be used on a Local Area Network to share calendars, ToDo
Lists, and Phone Books, permit group scheduling, organize meetings and
determine availability of others on the network.
The main screen puts your whole day right in front of you -- Calendar,
Daily Appointments, ToDo Items, and Phone Book. Numerous buttons simplify
everything from executing Searches and autodialing numbers, to setting
Category Filter Logic and editing your Phone Book.
T&C requires Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher and VBRUN300.DDL to run. The
fully functional unregistered version of Time and Chaos can be used for 21
days before registering. Registration is $29.95 (plus $5.00 shipping and
handling) which is extremely reasonable in my opinion. I have seen daily
organizers in book form which cost a lot more and don't integrate into your
software or run on a network!
\\\ Small Business Advisor The Small Business Advisor (SBA) is found in
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Library 13 of the Tax RoundTable (Page 1040,
Keyword TAX). There are two files (1212 SBA93_4A.ZIP and 1211 SBA93_4B.ZIP),
and both must be downloaded to run the program.
SBA won't put any stress on your system, requiring an IBM-compatible
with DOS 2.0 or higher, and a minimum of 512k RAM. The program runs in DOS and
is keyboard-controlled. There are no fancy graphics, but don't let that fool
you; this is a very powerful program.
If you are considering opening or buying your own business or franchise,
the Small Business Advisor makes finding information easy and entertaining. It
offers excellent tips on buying an existing business or purchasing a
franchise, and presents some thought-provoking legal and financial questions
that you should answer before laying down your hard-earned dollars.
And if you're not sure you have the right stuff, SBA includes an
Entrepreneur's Test. A series of insightful questions let you pinpoint
weaknesses, highlight strengths, and determine the qualifications needed to be
a successful entrepreneur.
This can be pretty dry stuff. Fortunately, SBA offers some creative comic
relief. Menus and section headings contain a number of amusing quotes and
information. For example, under "Money Sources for Startups" the quote reads:
"A banker is a person who will only lend you an umbrella if the sun is
shining."
SBA can't substitute for a lawyer or tax account. It will, however, give
you a good foundation in state and tax laws, and buying tips which may affect
your decision.
The unregistered version is configured to California State Laws, and
available for a 30-day trial period. After that, if you register, you have a
choice of a Professional Version which has all 50 states and D.C. for $49.95,
or a single state version for $29.95. Either way, it's a heck of a deal.
\\\ A Stitch in Time These are just three examples of the fabulous business
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ shareware available in various RoundTable Libraries.
It would be well worth your time to browse through the Index of Services (Page
15, Keyword INDEX) and check out any areas or Libraries that pique your
interest.
A few minutes online can save you hundreds of dollars in mis-matched
software and wasted time.

Microsoft '95 \\
///////////////////////////////////
by Keith A. Garrett
````````````````````
____
/ ___)
/ (_
/ /
(_/or several years, Microsoft has been well represented on GEnie, first in
the Microsoft RoundTable and more recently in the Windows RoundTable. But
there's no reason to stop there.
Introducing the two newest sources of Microsoft information: the Windows
95 News Highlight Center and the Microsoft Press RoundTable.
\\\ The Heart of the Matter: Windows 95 Instead of naming this latest
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ incarnation Windows 3.2, or 4.0, or
even brazenly jumping ahead to 6.0, Microsoft went for the designation
"Windows 95." Personally, I think that this signifies that 1995 is going to be
the Year of Windows (as opposed to more conventional titles like Year of the
Dragon, or Year of the Toaster).
No matter what you call it, though, it's going to be hot. And the hottest
place for up-to-date information -- much more timely than even the weekly
computer magazines -- is the new Windows 95 News Highlight Center (Page 95,
Keyword WINNEWS). Here you can read or download the current issue of the
WinNews electronic newsletter or obtain other informative files, such as the
Windows 95 Overview, Windows 95 Fact Sheet, Windows 95 Questions and Answers,
or even the Windows 95 Resource Kit.
Then, of course, there is the Microsoft Windows 95 RoundTable (Page 96,
Keyword WINDOWS95). The Bulletin Board there is the perfect place to discuss
every aspect of Windows 95 -- which might just make the wait for its release
easier to bear. This is also a good place to look for relevant announcements
and news from Microsoft.
The Windows 95 Software Library is another source of timely updates. The
information files mentioned above are also available for download here, which
Aladdin users may find more convenient:
WINNEWS WINDOWS95
Menu# File Description Filename File#
4. Windows 95 Fact Sheet DW95FS.ZIP 72
5. Windows 95 Q&A DW95Q.ZIP 82
6. Windows 95 Resource Kit DRK.ZIP 66
7. Windows 95 Beta 2 DREVGD.ZIP 73
Reviewer's Guide
These files are all in Microsoft Word format; the same documents are also
available in ASCII and Postscript formats, both in the Windows 95 Software
Library and from menu options in the News Highlight Center.
Naturally, there are other informative files in the Library. If you
think you might have been exposed to too much Warp-propaganda, read File 60
DMYTH.ZIP. This is a Microsoft Word document which attempts to clarify some
misconceptions about Windows 95 and how it compares with Warp. For more
concrete data, try File 39 APERF4.ZIP, an ASCII-format document containing
performance benchmarks of both Windows 95 and Warp.
\\\ Start the Presses! And stop by the Microsoft Press RoundTable (Page
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 960, Keyword MSPRESS). This area has been set aside
for discussion of all Microsoft Press products, from computer books to
training videos... even the titles that haven't been released yet! In the
RoundTable Bulletin Board you can read press releases about upcoming products
(Category 2, Topic 3), or you can even tell Microsoft Press YOUR wonderful
idea for a new book or video (Category 2, Topic 2). Category 20 is where
you'll find listings of more than 100 product descriptions, including full
descriptions, ISBN numbers, and prices.
Elsewhere in the Bulletin Board, you can communicate with Microsoft Press
authors and make your opinions known to the big guys themselves -- the
editors! (And believe me, these guys aren't nearly as mean as most editors...
oops, I think I just got in trouble with mine.) Also, there is a topic
reserved for corrections and additions to various titles.
The Microsoft Press RoundTable also features a Software Library full of
product press releases. These files are in Microsoft Word format, and they
cover books about MS-DOS, Windows, Word, Excel, and other IBM and Macintosh
software.
\\\ Back to Basics For Windows-not-quite-95 users, the Windows RoundTable
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (Page 1335, Keyword WINDOWS) is still a must. From the
Bulletin Board you can learn about Windows configuration, shortcut keys,
changing the startup screen, and more. There's a whole Category devoted to
installation issues, as well as Categories about every type of application,
Windows for Workgroups, and Windows NT. Then there's the perennial favorite --
screen savers (represented here by a Category devoted to Berkeley Systems'
After Dark series).
Now dig the gems you'll find in the Windows Software Library. For more
power try RipBAR (File 3225 RIPBAR16.ZIP), a drag-and-drop application
launcher, memory resource tracker, desktop clock and more. Then pump up your
mouse pointer with Animouse 4.0 (File 3379 ANIMOUS4.ZIP). Animouse animates
your Windows desktop, giving you multiple replacements for the arrow,
hourglass and sizers (including tropical fish!). Changer v2.0 (File 3481
CHANGER2.ZIP) offers one way of changing your Windows startup screen, and
Roger's Rapid Restart v3.0 (File 3005 RESTART.ZIP) gives you more control over
exiting and restarting Windows (especially handy if you want to see your new
startup screen right away!).
Still want more? Okay, okay, let's go back to where it all began -- the
Microsoft Products Support RoundTable (Page 505, Keyword MICROSOFT). This area
is devoted to support for users of Microsoft products, from MS-DOS to
Microsoft's programming languages. You can download patch files to upgrade
your software, get a listing of addresses and phone numbers for Microsoft
customer service centers all over the world, and search the Microsoft
KnowledgeBase for even deeper information.
There is also live help available from the Microsoft HelpDesk, located
in the Real-Time Conference area. The HelpDesk's hours of operation are 9:30
to 10:30 PM Eastern time every day, plus a 2:00-3:00 PM Eastern shift on
Saturdays and Sundays.
Okay, we've proved that GEnie is a sort of Microsoft Heaven. Now what
are you waiting for -- get to one of these places, PRONTO, before another one
appears!
(_/he Computer Assisted Learning Center's (CALC) Online Campus has been busy
this year introducing new CALC courses and working with other GEnie
GEnie students will take advantage of the new subjects they see arriving in
CALC this spring.
In addition to the large selection of courses, CALC is also offering
A Native American Celebration
``````````````````````````````
by Nina Lee Braden

______

(_/he beat begins with the pounding of feet, feet dancing and twirling and
flashing. Then hands pick it up -- tapping, and slapping, and drumming -- and
soon the whole body is in motion. It's infectious, this drum beat; captivating
and alluring. And during the month of March, all of GEnie will have the
opportunity to catch the fever, with Drum Beats Across GEnie: A Native
American Celebration.
From March 16 to 26, twenty-seven areas on GEnie will dance to the beat
of the drums as they celebrate Native American culture. From the Comics
RoundTable where Native American stereotypes in comics will be discussed, to
the Religion and Philosophy RoundTable where Native American Spirituality is
pondered, to the Stamp Collecting RoundTable where Native Americans featured
on stamps can be found -- you'll find Bulletin Board Topics, Library Files,
and Real-Time Conferences loaded with information and discussion about Native
Americans.
\\\ Variety is the Spice The variety of Native American Bulletin Board
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Topics is extensive, offering a veritable
encyclopedia of heritage, history, and folklore. Category 19, Topic 6 in the
NeedleArts RoundTable explores Native American Beading; Category 7, Topic 8 in
the Law RoundTable examines Native Americans and the Law; and Category 30,
Topic 13 in the Collectibles RoundTable discusses the many facets of Native
American Collectibles.
While some areas focus on art and culture, other RoundTables have devoted
entire Categories to Native American issues: Indian and Native Affairs
(Category 21) in the Canada RoundTable; Native American Issues (Category 44)
in the American West RoundTable; Native Americans, the Original Settlers
(Category 27) in the USA MidWest RoundTable, and Native Americans (Category
10) in the History RoundTable, are but a few examples.
But Drum Beats Across GEnie goes beyond Bulletin Board discussions; it
encompasses the added dimension of Library Files, Exhibits and Real-Time
Conferences as well.
\\\ Catch the Fever A special area on GEnie will be created to help you
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ locate discussions, both live and on Bulletin Boards,
but also Native American files from various RoundTable Libraries throughout
the system, which you'll be able to download right there. Just type DRUMS at
any GEnie prompt.
Images will be available in a number of file formats including GIF,
displayable on most systems, and Multimedia-GIFs for Windows, such as those in
the Mutlimedia RoundTable Library in Files 1197 EAGLE1.GIF and 1198
GSPIRIT.GIF, which use the Multimedia-GIF player for Windows in File 1196
MM-GIF.ZIP.
Other graphics will be available too, and there's a wealth of text files
and magazine archives in many of the previously mentioned RoundTables. Check
GEnie Page 1110 for details.
For those who enjoy the give and take of live discussion, there are a
number of fascinating Real-Time Conferences taking place all over GEnie. Among
the many and diverse themes covered: "Native American Pathways" in the New Age
RoundTable on March 22 at 10 PM Eastern time; "Native American Cooking" in the
Food and Wine RoundTable; "Native American Skylore" in the Space and Science
RoundTable; "Native American Heroes in Romantic Fiction" in the Romance
Writer's Exchange on March 19; "Native American Medicines" in the Chemistry
RoundTable; and "Native American Music" in the Music RoundTable on March 17 at
10 PM Eastern. Check the Information Banner in each RoundTable or GEnie's
special events Page 1110, Keyword DRUMS, for more information.
You'll find a ton of graphics files to download, a truckload of topics
to read and reply to, and a stack of conferences to attend. No matter what
your interests or background might be, you're certain to find something to
tickle your fancy. Catch the fever, and feel the rhythm. Join the Drum Beats
Across GEnie event from March 16 to March 26, as we all dance to the music of
Native American culture.
For a complete schedule of all of activities and offerings for Drum Beats
Across GEnie, plus last-minute additions, check the Banners when you log on
and the special Drum Beats schedule on Page 1110. Type DRUMS at any GEnie

(_/ \/ \_)arch has always seemed to be a 'tween month to me. That's because
it lies between February and April and just seems to sit there, in the
doldrums. It's winter with the promise of spring. Or spring being infringed
upon by winter. Lion and lamb; a study in contrasts.
When I lived in Ohio, it was a month of frustration. The sun said to
come out and play. But all too often the roads were covered with the
salt-heavy remnants of the last storm. Here in Arizona the sun is calling
winter visitors home, and natives and transplants are looking forward to the
jokes about being out of step with the rest of the United States when the
switch to Daylight Savings is made. "In summer, we don't need any more
daylight," is the standard response.
'Tween months are times to look for 'tween subjects on GEnie, to look
around and discover new areas. It can be like deciding to take a 'tween day to
go exploring. Wander outdoors on a warm day; huddle by the virtual fire on a
cold day.
As we roam around GEnie during March, come seek out some 'tween subjects.
Happy exploring!

Do we have an American civilization? This is just one of the subjects being
addressed by Congressman Newt Gingrich, an adjunct professor at Reinhardt

the foundation principles necessary to the renewal of American civilization.
This lesson, the first of 10 class presentations, gives an introduction and

How to Have Fun Paying
``````````` Taxes Without Really Trying
````````````````````````````
by Mark D. Hiatt
`````````````````
_ _
( \ /\ / )
\ \/ \/ /
\ /
\_/\_/e keep hearing how there's nothing certain in Life save for Death
and Taxes. But thanks to modern medicine, we're now living longer than ever
and every new Congress has threatened to cure taxes, too. Still, for this year
at least, there is no avoiding the duo.
If you're really not into taxes, or even if you really are, you'll find
a lot on GEnie to keep you involved. First, let's start with actual tax help.
\\\ Dedudctions and Exemptions Many of us still do our own income taxes
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (isn't it funny, though, how that whole
home-dentistry thing never quite caught on?). If you're one who enjoys the
convenience and privacy (and potential cost savings) of doing your own tax
return, then you'll appreciate the help available in GEnie's Tax RoundTable.
Can you deduct the money you spend online? What is the difference
between a deduction and an exemption? Can you write off a new laser printer if
you sometimes use it to print bowling league statistics? You can find the
answers to these and other questions in the Tax RoundTable, from real
carbon-based tax experts.
Something to remember: You pay taxes all year, so don't think of the Tax
RoundTable as just a seasonal stop on your tour of GEnie. They're there all
year 'round, and the tips you pick up now can pay big dividends (non-taxable,
but reportable on Schedule Q, line umpty-six) throughout the year.
And one more thing. For Mac or PC users, the Tax RoundTable has IRS forms
available, and you needn't worry about not having a specific page layout
program or word processor because GEnie has worked out a deal with Adobe to
have special Acrobat readers available in the Tax Library, as well as whatever
form you need.
\\\ Looking for Senator Fogbreath Well, that's all fine, but we've got all
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ of this computing horsepower just sitting
on our desktops -- when we're not playing Myst that is. Isn't there some way
to tap into that and make our tax lives easier?
You bet there is! GEnie is home to the Intuit RoundTable, famous for
Quicken and this time of year known for their popular MS-DOS, Mac, and Windows
income tax preparation software. If you are already a Quicken user, you can
quickly and easily import your 1994 figures into this year's tax program. If
not, gather up your receipts and credit card statements, roll up those sleeves
and get started. If you need any help, the Intuit RoundTable is available all
year round, too.
It's easy to understand how someone might come away from April 15th
feeling a little sore, and maybe a bit upset about the way taxes are collected
and spent in this country. Feel free to sound off in GEnie's WhiteHouse
RoundTable, and in the Public Forum, as well. What do you think of the new
flat-tax proposal? Should credit card interest deductions be restored? How
about we add a nickel to the price of every gallon of gasoline, and use that
to pay off the national debt? You're sure to find several tax-related
discussions, with a wide range of opinion, in the Public Forum.
While you're there, be sure to download the latest listings of
congressional addresses and telephone numbers. Many of our more enlightened
elected now maintain e-mail addresses, and most have fax machines. If you have
any ideas on how Senator Fogbreath might better be spending the tax dollars
you've just sent, consider sending a GEnie-fax to Washington. And don't forget
that GEnie offers Internet mail at no additional cost, so you can also send
e-mail to get your point across.
Taxes will probably never be fun. But with GEnie, at least they don't
have to be complete drudgery. We can't help you pay them, but there's a lot we
can do toward helping you figure them out -- maybe making a few changes in
your situation for next year, or maybe even changing the way taxes will be
figured in the future.
Engaging GemStone's New Engagement System
(_/hey say you can find anything in a mall. I don't know who 'they' are, but
they're right. I came across a shop in one local mall displaying and selling a
variety of medieval bladed weapons. Now, I wasn't in the market for a
longsword or falchion, but it was a slow day and I found myself undergoing a
mild attack of curiosity. So I went in.
I asked the owner if I could try out the bastard sword. It had a polished
silver blade, etched with intricate runes, topped by an elaborate dragon's
head pommel. It was perfectly balanced; heavy, yet strangely comfortable.
As I held it out in front of me, looking for all the world like someone
who knew what he was doing, a couple of things happened. I was filled with
visions of valiant battles and desperate heroism, images of Dark Riders, and
Murgos, and Black Slayers. And I became increasingly aware of the true weight
and bulk of this weapon.
I thought about fantasy and reality, sword and sorcery, goblins and
orcs. I brandished that beautiful hand-and-a-halfer while the shop owner
ducked and cringed and tried to smile. And I thought about GemStone.
\\\ Live the Fantasy In GemStone, you can shed the cloak of reality and
monsters. In GemStone, magnificent quests, grand mysteries, and constant
danger highlight a land where boredom is unheard of, and resurrections are
commonplace.
For years, it has been GEnie's top multi-player game. And for years,
anomalies in the armor, magic, and combat system stood as minor imperfections
what was otherwise a virtually flawless virtual fantasy.
Until now, that is.
\\\ Striking a Balance In January, Simutronics announced the launch of
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ their much-anticipated Engagement System. The new ES
-- which is being implemented in two stages -- will bring ranged weapons, new
armor, a revised magic system, and varied combat dynamics to GemStone.
"Basically, what we are trying to do is make the game more balanced for
all players, by upgrading not only how armor works, but combat from the ground
up," says GemStone III Product Manager, Lady Fawn Starstone. Phase I, she
explains, will include updated Condensed Combat System tables; the removal of
Minimum Maneuver Mods which affected offensive and defensive bonuses; the
implementation of the first true maneuvers like STAND, WEAR, and REMOVE; the
introduction of Extraordinary Spell Failure, in which armor will have an
affect on spell-casting; and the removal of all animal hide armor from the
game.
"In Phase II," she concludes, "we will further develop maneuvers, flesh
out the ESF system, implement ranged weapons (such as bows), and institute a
full engagement system."
So what, exactly, is this Engagement System? Some new form of matrimonial
introduction? Not exactly.
According to GemStone GameMaster Reline: "To attack an opponent, you will
first have to 'engage' that opponent in combat, and 'disengage' in order to
flee. This will allow for such things as having the weaker spellcasters in the
'back' of a group, since fighters can attempt to engage the monsters before
they can attack a weaker member of the group."
When you factor in the use of bows, spears, and even throwing weapons
like shirukens, conflict resolution in GemStone takes on a whole new meaning.
\\\ Swimming in Full Plate Gone are the days of simply standing toe-to-toe
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ with a grey orc, steel golem, or kral warrior
and slugging it out. Gone too, are the lonely days of hunting solo.
Players will now want to think about things like encumbrance, maneuver
penalties, and spell failures. Hunting in groups with a balanced mix of
professions will be vital to success; strategy and tactics will play an
increasingly important role.
Armor is no longer a forgotten art. Training and armor type will affect
everything from combat to roleplaying: Heavier armor will provide greater
protection, but will make it harder to engage less-encumbered opponents and
severely impair skill-based actions. (Try climbing a fence or sneaking up on
someone in plate mail sometime.)
Encumbrance will now reflect common-sense physical realities: a ranger
burdened with a pack full of loot will find foraging a tad awkward; a mage
carrying a shield and sword will be unable to cast a spell. Discretion now
becomes the better part of valor. Player characters wearing light armor will
be able to run away from what they can't defeat; those wearing heavy armor can
take a licking and keep on ticking.
So-called weaker combat classes (don't say that in front of a sorcerer or
mage) will prefer to be in relative safety of the back ranks, hurling spells
or healing wounds while the grunts slug it out in the front ranks. But other
fighter-types could also lurk in the background, firing ranged weapons before
engaging in hand-to-hand combat.
Of course, the denizens of Kulthea will be affected by the same changes
and limitations. They'll be running around in packs too, using much the same
strategy. The smarter ones, at least; it's a good thing orcs and trolls can't
read.
\\\ In a Nutshell If we had plenty of time and space, lots of patience, and
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ a book to publish, we could review all of the changes
planned for the new ES in detail. But this is just a simple column. If you
want all the juicy details, check out Category 19, Topic 26 in the MPGRT on
Page 1045. For now, here's an abbreviated list for Phase I:
1) Animal hide Armor Types (ATs 3 & 4) will be removed. Players will be
able to convert their existing hide armor into any other type, while
retaining all special attributes and enhancements.
2) Modifications to ICE's Condensed Combat System will make armor more
protective and realistic.
3) Maneuver penalties will be introduced that will affect certain actions
or skills while wearing armor -- such as spellcasting, hiding, or
climbing.
4) Penalties to offensive and defensive bonuses (OB/BD) for wearing
certain armor types will be removed.
6) Wearing metal armor will affect the chance of successful casting
attempts.
7) Spell-slingers will require one hand free to cast spells.
Phase II of the ES will continue the modifications with implementation
of the actual Engage/Disengage System, and will include introduction of ranged
weapons, spell modifications, area-of-effect spells, implementation of
maneuver penalties for engaging/disengaging in combat, and the creation of a
breakage, damage, and repair system for weapons and armor. Game mechanics will
also be rebalanced to compensate for the new armor characteristics, with
modifications to creature abilities and certain spells.
\\\ The Best Gets Better Part of the beauty of GemStone III is that you can
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ play it using any computer with a simple
text-based communications program. And a full-featured multimedia graphics
front end program for IBM-compatibles is available from Library 5 on GEnie
Page 930, Keyword GEMSTONE. The main program is in File 199 GS3FEB17.EXE, and
Windows PIF and Icons files are available in File 211 FE-PIF&ICO.ZIP.
Additional graphics can be had in File 290 R10.EXE and striking background
music is in File 219 MUSIC1.EXE.
"GemStone III is growing and changing daily as we strive to make it even
better than it is now," Fawn sums up. "All of these enhancements are with a
single goal in mind: to continue to provide our users with the finest, most
well-balanced and enjoyable product possible." Works of fiction like Tolkien's
Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Eddings' Belgariad, and Feist's Riftwar Saga let
you read about fantasy worlds populated by fantastic characters. GemStone III
lets you live it.
Try finding that in a mall.
IBM-Compatible RoundTables \\
(____)die Weinberg uses a Macintosh in her job as a children's book art
director. So, what's she doing in a column about GEnie's IBM PC and
compatible Computing RoundTables? Well, Edie uses Microsoft Word for Windows
on her husband's PC when she works at home and she read about the WOPR
utilities for Word for Windows in the August 1994 issue of LiveWire. She liked
them so much, she decided to see what other WinWord and Windows enhancements
she could find around GEnie.
\\\ Microsoft RoundTable In Member Contributions, Library 26 of the
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Microsoft RoundTable, Edie found some terrific
Word for Windows add-ons and templates.
File 5469 TITLER.ZIP allows a temporary change of the window title in
Word for Windows 6.0 to the title of the document rather than the filename. It
allows the superficial breaking of the 8 character filename limit. (Being used
to her Mac at work, Edie loved that, of course).
File 5467 TB2X.ZIP is a toolbar doubler for Word 6.0 that allows two Word
toolbars to occupy the space of one. It's fully customizable and helps clear
up the often cluttered Word screen.
And file 5466 RUN.ZIP is a Word for Windows program launcher that works
just like Program Manager's Run command -- from inside Word. Its push-button
interface makes finding files fast and easy. "I like being able to run other
programs easily without switching away from Word," Edie said, after trying
this one.
One of the programs Edie can launch while she's working in Word is the
new replacement calculator accessory for Windows which corrects the floating
point error found in the original release. It's File 5883 WW1138.EXE, also in
the Microsoft RoundTable library.
You'll find the Microsoft RoundTable at GEnie Page 505 or by using the
keyword: MICROSOFT.
\\\ Windows RoundTable Edie found out about the latest version of the WOPR
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ utilities in the Word for Windows users topic
(Category 13, Topic 2) in the Windows RoundTable Bulletin Board. In case you
missed the August issue, WOPR enhances Word for Windows with, among many
features, a file manager with user-definable "cubbyholes" or named
directories; an envelope printing utility with many more options than the one
built into Word; and Edie's favorite feature, the ability to instantly
spell-check any word just by clicking the right mouse button over it. Download
file 3508 WOPR60B.ZIP.
While in the Windows Library, check out File 3498 ATASK12.ZIP. Auto Task
v1.2 lets you schedule any MS-DOS or Windows application to run at a specific
time without user intervention. Tasks can be scheduled on a daily, weekly,
monthly, or per-minute basis.
DropView\IP (File 3485 DVIP20.ZIP) is a full-featured Windows 3.1
drag-and-drop image-processing, drawing, format conversion, capture, and
thumbnail program. You can drag multiple BMP, GIF, PCX, TIF, EPS, and JPEG
files from File Manager for editing, conversion, or printing. It's a real
"Swiss Army Knife" for Windows graphics.
Take Command 1.0 (File 3482 TCMD10.ZIP) is a native Windows version of
J.P. Software's popular 4DOS command line interface. Take Command includes
most of the powerful features familiar to 4DOS users (except for a few that do
do not make sense in Windows), plus a few commands designed especially for
Windows. It includes a virtual device driver that allows many DOS programs to
run within the Take Command window, rather than in a DOS window.
The Windows RoundTable is located at page 1335 (Keyword: WINDOWS).
\\\ IBM PC RoundTable What about you non-Windows users? At page 615
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (Keyword: IBMPC), GEnie's IBM PC RoundTable's library
is a treasure trove of programs and utilities for business, entertainment,
education -- whatever you use your PC for!
One of the new entries worth trying out is File 37095 ALM511.EXE.
Address List Manager v5.11 offers an easy and quick way to maintain your
mailing list. It handles up to 2400 records per file and includes an
easy-to-use editor, mouse support, fast sorting, automatic return address
printing and versatile customization. You can adjust the output to fit any
size page, index card, envelope, or 1, 2, 3 or 4-across labels.
Shareware authors and electronic publishers might try HyperRead
Generator 5.4 (File 37085 HRG54.ZIP), a program that allows you to convert an
ASCII text file into a hypertext file. You can navigate by jumping through
hypertext links as well as with the normal page up, page down, and cursor
up/down scrolling. You can also link PCX pictures into the document so you can
view images embedded in the file. And you can even embed instructions to run a
DOS COM, EXE, or BAT file in the program, so you can run external programs
from within the document and then return to the document where they left off.
\\\ Multimedia RoundTable Considering some more ambitious experiments in
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ electronic publishing? Wander over to the
Multimedia RoundTable (Page 2000, keyword MULTIMEDIA) and take a look at the
terrific demo version of Quest 5.0 for Windows, a new commercial multimedia
authoring system. The RoundTable staff promises that this flashy demo will
"knock your socks off!" It's in three parts, Files 1502, 1503, and 1504,
QDEMO1.ZIP, QDEMO2.ZIP, and QDEMO3.ZIP, respectively.
\\\ Word Perfect RoundTable Two more demos of interest to PC users are
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ available in the Wordperfect RoundTable at Page
521 (keyword: WP). File 5675 PO30QT.ZIP is a "Quick Tour" demonstration of the
Novell Applications Group's Perfect Office suite of business software. And
File 5673 WP61QT.ZIP offers a Quick Tour of WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows.
\\\ OS/2 RoundTable Last but not least in this month's sampling of GEnie's
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ IBM PC and compatibles Computing RoundTables is the
OS/2 RoundTable at Page 1400 (Keyword: OS/2). Among the new offerings in the
OS/2 library, take a look at File 3488 MESA2.ZIP. Mesa 2 is a full-featured
spreadsheet program -- this evaluation version allows you to create worksheets
of limited size without a license number, but is otherwise fully-functional.
You'll also find program upgrades, like File 3479 HALOS2.ZIP, which updates
the version of HyperAccess Lite supplied with OS/2 Warp; and driver updates
like File 3484 S3DRV25.ZIP, the latest (as of this writing) drivers from the
S3 Corporation for video cards using the S3 chipset.
Remember, GEnie's IBM-Compatibles Computing RoundTables offer more than
software. Whether you use your PC for business, pleasure or both -- in the
office, at home, or on the road -- you'll find others using their computers in
similar ways, sharing tips and advice about PC hardware and software in the
Bulletin Boards and Real-Time Conference areas.
(_/o keep up on the latest twists and turns of your favorite financial
software, drop by the Macintosh RoundTable Bulletin Board on a regular basis.
Category 2, Business Software, includes discussions of many of the most
popular business and personal finance programs. For example, Topic 6 in that
category provides a lively and active discussion of the popular financial
management program, Quicken. If you've been wondering how well this program
handles small business accounting as well as personal finance, nothing beats
sharing the experiences of actual small business owners, such as GEnie user
Leslie Burnside, who comments, "I use Quicken for my retail business -- I own
3 video stores. It has worked out very well for my accounting needs and gives
me the info I need."
\\\ Bulletin Board Finds These discussions also provide solutions to pesky
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ and irritating little problems, like the one
bothering RoundTable member Carl Chatto:
"Am I missing something? I can't open Quicken files by double-clicking
on them in Finder. I can only open them by dragging them to the Quicken
program icon, or double-clicking on the Quicken program, then opening files
from within the program. It works, but it's not very Mac-like."
Several users were quick to provide the solution to this common Macintosh
predicament, including Macintosh RoundTable Librarian Kevin Steele:
"You need to rebuild your desktop. Restart your computer and hold down
the Command and Option keys until the Mac asks you if you want to rebuild the
desktop. Click OK and all should be, indeed, 'OK.'"
Kevin also brought everyone up to date on the latest Quicken updater
file in the Software Library, and its somewhat confusing version ID:
"The new updater will take Quicken 5.0 Revision 2 to Quicken 5.0
Revision 3 -- it's a bit confusing, but just think of it as going from 5.0 to
5.0.3! To find out what revision you're using, select the "About Quicken" menu
option and then press the "r" key -- the revision number will appear." The
updater can be found as File 33943 QUICKEN5 UPDATER.SEA in the Macintosh
Software Library.
\\\ Strong Library Offerings Of course, there are other excellent business
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ and finance-related files in the Library. For
example, if you want to get your kids started with good money habits at an
early age, you might want to download 31830 $PENDING MONEY.SEA, a demo of a
program for grades 2-5 that uses colorful graphics and quality speech to teach
money skills.
If you work by the hour on your computer as a consultant or independent
contractor, keeping track of your time can be a hassle. File 34024 TIMETRACKER
2.4.3.SIT provides a dandy solution by tracking the time you spend on
designated tasks.
Keeping track of your time is only useful if you get paid for that time,
so you might also want to download 33931 HYPERINVOICE 1.3E, a full-featured
invoice application for HyperCard 2.2 or higher. The file description reports
that the file is perfect for a freelancer, provides "automatic tracking of
paid and unpaid invoices and statistics," and "includes color, sound, Balloon
Help, custom help, print report examples, plus lots o' fun."
Are you an adventuresome cybernaut planning on marketing your business
through online systems? If so, you'll certainly want to check out File 34048
E-CATALOG FOLDER.SIT, a pair of stand-alone applications that let you create
an "electronic" catalog of your products for distribution through bulletin
boards and e-mail.
As hard as you may find it to type that awful word, entering "tax" as a
keyword in a Library search will provide a list of the latest spreadsheet tax
templates, invaluable aids for making that taxing task as painless as
possible.
\\\ Online Servant Updated Online Servant, the popular Hypercard-based
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ GEnie "front-end" for Macintoshes, has a new
version, 1.34, available as file 1622 in the Macintosh Product Support
RoundTable Library at Page 606. New features include:
- Command-key shortcuts for the Servant menu items
- Control-key shortcuts for the buttons along the bottom of the Message stack
- Buttons for Tag Line, Delete Card, and Bookmarks
- Better support for 9600 bps log-ons.
The new version elicited enthusiastic responses from Servant users, as
illustrated by GEnie user Bobbi Mann's comment in Category 45 of the Mac
Product Support Bulletin Board:
"I've just started to use the new version and I love it. All your hard
work has made us happy, thanks. I'm especially happy that the stacks don't
keep changing when you open the program, and I like the way the RT's are set
up too. Good Job!"
Amiga *StarShip* RoundTable \\
////////////////////////////////////
by Jim Meyer
`````````````
______
(__ __)
/ /
/ /
(_/he mood was grim at the Wide House as President Phil and his wife Pillory
looked at the mass of papers piled on the desk. "Honey," said Phil, "I hate
this time of year. I should have just abolished the income tax. I wonder if
it's too late?"
Pillory gave him one of those 'I told you so' smiles as she said, "Well
dear, we wouldn't want to put all those nice IRS folks out of work, now would
we?" Phil frowned at her, scratched his head, and said, "Say -- I wonder if
vice-president Al Gorithm has any ideas. You haven't seen him, have you?"
Just then, a voice came from one side of the room. "Ahem! Right here, Mr.
President." Phil and Pillory were momentarily startled, as they had assumed
that a nearby wooden figure was just that, a wooden figure. Al continued,
"Y'all should just hop on the information super-duper highway, get plugged in,
and let your computer do all the work!" The President put down his
cheeseburger, looked at Pillory, and -- after several moments of silence --
intoned, "Please, Al, do go on!"
"Well, Mr. President," Al drawled, "the first thing you should do is log
on to GEnie and stop by the *StarShip* Library. Brian Meyers has uploaded the
1040 tax forms for PHA$AR. Look for File 25084 PHASARTAXFORMS.LHA. Get those
and you'll be able to do your taxes right on your Amiga, when you're not
playing Deluxe Galaga!"
"That's nice, Al," the President replied, "but my main problem is keeping
track of all these checks. Look here -- I've got checks to Blue Cross, checks
to McDougal's, and even a check for Noot's new book. It's just chaos. I don't
even know what's tax-deductible!"
"Not a problem," Al replied. "AMICHECK1_20.LHA in File 24558 is a demo
version of AMICHECK -- a check-tracking, reconciling, budgeting, graphing, and
even analyzing program. Just set up your budget categories, enter your
deposits, checks, and withdrawals, and you can easily track the results. It's
quite configurable as well. And yes, you can keep track of what's
tax-deductible. I use it to keep track of the money I spend on my computer
equipment. This demo version won't print checks, but is otherwise fully
functional. Oh, and it requires AmigaOS 2.0 or higher, but you have that."
Pillory, who had left briefly, returned with a batch of freshly-baked
cookies. Both Phil and Al plunged in as Al continued. "Another demo checkbook
program you might want to look at is CHECKS_DEMO.LHA in File 23560. This
version of Checks & Balances, which also requires AmigaOS 2.0 or higher, won't
allow saves. It does have a bunch of goodies, though, including a financial
calculator and a pleasing and user-friendly interface."
"Mffmf fmlmphf!" said the President.
"Huh?" asked Al. "Ah, yes. Fun. Well, while we're on the subject of
taxes, you might be interested in TAXI2V11.LHA in File 24164. This is an Amiga
version of Matt Westfall's C64 classic, Space Taxi. While the graphics are
necessarily clunky, the digitized sounds are great! But I crashed too much to
really get a feel for the higher levels of the game.
"There's also JOUST30.LHA in File 24960 by the same author. This
fast-paced action game is faithful, as nearly as I can recall, to the arcade
classic. Oh, and if you want to know why it took so long to liquidate
Commodore, take a look at COMPUTERRAC.LHA in File 25146. It features Rachel
Racoon, from the mouse of Les Dietz, and the archive includes both a JPEG and
a 16-color version."
"Just in case you decide to expand our WWW home page, " Al continued,
"download HTML-HEAVEN.LHA in File 25133. This spiffy set of tools adds HTML
commands to your favorite AREXX-capable text editor, and it makes it a snap to
set up (or spiff up) HTML files for all those Mosaic buffs out there. As a
matter of fact, I do believe that the picture of Mittens needs to be updated.
In fact, you could use that morphing program TSMORPH30.LHA in File 25149 to
morph Mittens into Noot. Or vice-versa!"
"This is just great!" yelled Phil. Unfortunately, he threw his arms into
the air at the same time, hitting Pillory in the hand just as she was pouring
their tea. Al was there in an instant, with an handful of recycled paper
towels. "How," asked the President, "can I thank you for this?"
"Well," said Al, "download BUS_PLAN.LHA in File 23382."
"Why?" asked Phil.
"Because it's a guide to developing a business plan, from the Small
Business Administration. You see, if you decide to start your own business, I
can try for your job in two years! Gipper and I have decided that we really
like the view from here!"

\_/\_/ell, with March upon us, tax time is almost here. If you have
difficulties getting your financial act together, let your Atari computer help
you this year.
The first problem most people face is just plain keeping track of the
income and outgo. The RoundTable Library (Page 475;3) has over 25 files which
can help in this respect. While there is little point in boring you with all
of them, a few are worth a mention.
If short and simple is your style, you might want to look at File 33548
CHEKBAL.ZIP. This is a simple checkbook balancing utility which can greatly
simplify that monthly chore.
If you own a business and need detailed financial records, or just want
to keep the kind of records that enable you to minimize the taxes you pay,
check out The Ultimate Finance Manager (File 30644 MC20.LZH). This is a
complete financial manager, and includes budgets, investments and checking. If
you compare it with similar programs for other platforms, it's much easier and
quite intuitive to use. A real bonus with this one is that it is well-
supported by the author in Category 6 Topic 6 of the Bulletin Board. If you
have any problem setting and using it, help is easy to get right in the Atari
RoundTable.
\\\ Advance Planning Perhaps you should be thinking about an IRA, if you
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ have the money and can afford to set a little aside.
While the simple way to have one of these is a special IRA bank account, with
the low interest rates they offer, you should really consider stocks or mutual
funds. Although these options are more complicated, there are a couple of
excellent programs to help you manage them: Stock Smart (demo in File 28545)
and Stalk the Market (demo in File 23976).
Both of these programs simplify gathering and managing Stock and Mutual
Fund information, and both know how to use GEnie's Current Quotes feature to
automatically gather pricing information. Stalk the Market also has the
advantage of regular online support by the author, Tom Bushaw, in Category 6
Topic 5 of the Atari Bulletin Board.
\\\ Getting Advice Of course, all of the programs in the world won't be of
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ much use if you don't understand how equities work, or
find it difficult to tell a good investment from a bad one. Fortunately, there
are a number of knowledgeable individuals who hang out in the ST RoundTable
who are more than happy to help you through any financial minefields you might
encounter.
The first of these helpful people is, of course, the aforementioned Tom
Bushaw. Tom wrote Stalk the Market for his own use and is extremely
knowledgeable when it comes to investments. Another is Sandy Wolf. Sandy
writes on the subject of investments on a regular basis in GEnieLamp ST and
visits the Atari Stockholders topic on the Bulletin Board (Category 14 Topic
44) almost every day. Sandy is an active "Market Watcher" who is more than
happy to discuss his findings with anybody interested. If you have ever been
tempted to invest in Atari (or Sega or Nintendo or whoever), drop by and get
information of the sort you do not learn from a stockbroker.
With all of these great people and such wonderful tools, what are you
waiting for? Let your Atari ST help you get your financial house in order in
1995. It is much easier than you think!

(_/ \_)s winter draws to a close, the early spring "tax season" approaches.
The cloudy, snowy, winter days give rise to the financial fogs of tax
preparation. "But," you say, "I'm not ready. It's too soon for this to be
happening!" Well, it's time for you to live up to those New Year's resolutions
to not procrastinate and to be more organized in your finances. Come on over
to the A2 RoundTable; we can help you get financially organized and get those
taxes filed on time.
Whether you run a small business or you need a personal/home accounting
system, we can help. Stop by Category 8 in the Bulletin board. Posting a
message in Topic 5 (Accounting Software) will get you started. You can find
specific help in Category 8 for Financial GeniuS Version 2.0 (Category 8,
Topic 3); Quicken (Category 8, Topic 10); Your Money Matters (Category 8,
Topic 11), and Managing Your Money (Category 8, Topic 16). Quality Computers
will help with "Bottom Line" in Category 42.
If you decide none of these programs is for you, check out one of the
personal accounting programs from A2's Library:
File 13331 HBS.V1.1.BXY, A Home accounting system.
File 14067 ACCOUNT.II.BXY, A Personal Finance and Tax program.
File 17895 HAS.BXY, A IIgs Home Accounting System.
Finally, there is AppleWorks. We have templates and macro sets created
for use with that package:
File 11717 BUS01.BXY, NAUG Business templates - Disk 1-1/2.
File 11715 BUS01S1.BXY, NAUG Business templates - Disk 1-1.
File 11716 BUS01S2.BXY, NAUG Business templates - Disk 1-2.
File 11123 SM.BUS.BXY, AppleWorks: Small Business Template.
File 11238 P.ROLL.ACCT.BXY, AppleWorks: Payroll Accounting.
File 11978 HOME.ACCTS1.BXY, AppleWorks Home Accountant Disk 1-1.
File 11979 HOME.ACCTS2.BXY, AppleWorks Home Accountant Disk 1-2.
File 12467 CHKWRKS1.2.BXY, Check-printing macros for AW 3.0.
File 13406 CHECKPLUS.BXY, NAUG CheckbookPlus templates v.1.1.
File 21074 BANKCHECK.BXY, Spreadsheet check record.
File 22606 BUSACCTING.BXY, AppleWorks Small Business Accounting.
File 23641 CHECKS1.1.BXY, AWGS files to maintain Finances.
Of course, if none of these meet your needs and you want to try your
hand at creating your own accounting program or AppleWorks macro set, our
friends in A2Pro are more than willing to help you bring your creation to
fruition.
With your finances in order, it shouldn't be hard to do your taxes. This
is generally true but (and there's always a "but") a computer program sure can
simplify the process.
You can find tax program information and AppleWorks templates to help you
complete the forms. Stop by Category 8, Topic 5 to ask what tax processing
programs the RoundTable members recommend. Check out these and other tax forms
and templates by doing a Library search using the keyword TAX. Here's a
sample:
File 19502 AUTOWORKS.BXY, NAUG AutoWorks Automobile Templates.
File 23876 AWGS1040.94.BXY, 1994 individual income tax preparer (AWGS).
File 23875 AW1040.94.BXY, 1994 income tax preparer (AW)
If you have a problem getting your new tax preparation software working
with your printer, our hardware experts in the Bulletin Board will be more
than glad to get you going.
A2 RoundTable Featured Files for this month are:
File 23887 BIRTHDAYS.BXY, Birthday desktop backgrounds.
File 23871 SLOTSCAN162.BXY, Slotscan v1.62 - scans slots!
File 23868 FIX.AW5.DB.BXY, Fixes AppleWorks 5.0 DB label report bug.

(___)(__)ere's a handy list of all the Software Library files mentioned in
the March 1995 issue of LiveWire. If GEnie is unable to locate a certain file
when you try to download it, it is possible that the file has been updated
since the article was written. Try a SEARCH of that Library using terms which
describe the file. That should locate the latest entry. If all else fails, ask
the RoundTable sysops for help -- that's what they're there for!
GEnie's Libraries are almost always located on Menu Option 3 on the main
RoundTable page. Files can be downloaded either by number or name from Menu
Option 6 inside any Library.
Remember that uploads to GEnie are free during non-prime time. If you
have something to share, upload it for other GEnie members!
