(_/ \_)ugust means sports action and Hot Summer Nights on GEnie, a dynamite
combo if ever there was one. Not only that, you can do it all faster, at less
cost than ever before!

For the scoop on GEnie's new, low rates and faster response -- which go
into effect on August 1st -- check out last month's LiveWire story about "A
More Powerful GEnie." Then sign on and enter the Keyword HSN or Move to Page
1110 for a detailed listing of "kewl" things to do on Hot Summer Nights in
August. New versions of GEnie's proprietary software will soon be released, so
you can enjoy GEnie at up to 14.4K bps and upload your favorite files with
swift Zmodem protocol. Did you know that GEnie offered free uploading before
any other online service? That's right; sharing is an online tradition we've
always encouraged.

Online speed freaks like yours truly (actually, who isn't these days?)
should remember that getting GEnie LiveWire magazine is now FREE of connect
charges (except for outlying area surcharges) at up to 14.4K bps when
downloaded on evenings, weekends and holidays. Just think of all the trees
you'll save by typing LIVEWIRE at any GEnie prompt. That goes for back issues,
too.

\\\ Start Your Engines We know a lot about what's online but were still
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ amazed by the diversity and sheer amount of sports
activity and information on GEnie when Jay Kee sent in his "Be A Sport" story
for this issue. We think you'll be amazed, too. And Kathy Ptacek's tale about
Glen Johnson throws an interesting spotlight on GEnie's Sports RoundTable
manager.

You'll find sports action teaming on the Internet, so charge through
GEnie's Internet Gateway on Page 5000, Keyword INTERNET, this month. Here are
a three fascinating World Wide Web sites to get you started:

One of the best sports spots anywhere is SportsLine USA, designated
the "official online service of the NFL players." There, you'll find
NFL, NCAA and NBA schedules, and you can submit questions to Broadway
Joe, all at the URL http://www.sportsline.com

ESPNET SportsZone offers late-breaking sports news at the URL

\_/\_/hen we hear the word "sports," most of us think of baseball,
football, and basketball. The Yankees, the Cowboys, and Da Bulls. Huge
stadiums, network TV, and the Goodyear blimp. Lockouts, walkouts, and player
strikes. Escalating salaries, rising ticket prices, and die-hard fans with
weird makeup. The Super Bowl. The World Series.

If we think about anything else -- like cycling, swimming, or running --
we see it as "recreational activity." Not sport. As if it doesn't qualify
unless you have an agent, get paid 60,000 bucks a minute, and do a ton of
product endorsements. Even the big-ticket sports change status when the
average person plays. We're not athletes; we're duffers, hackers, and weekend
wonders.

Truth is, any recreational, competitive, physical activity qualifies as a
sport, and any person engaging in that activity is, by definition, an athlete.

The same thing holds true for online sports.

\\\ Appearances Can Be Deceiving In cyberspace, the name of the game is
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ information. But the perceptions are the
same: Sports is big business; everything else is recreational. At first
glance, even GEnie follows that line. But as we all know, appearances can be
deceiving.

Start at the most logical sports destination on GEnie: the Sports
RoundTable (Page 215, Keyword SPORTS). A quick peek at the Bulletin Board
reveals an impressive listing of information resources for big-time,
big-league sports -- baseball, with 50-plus Topics in two Categories (2 & 3);
basketball, with roughly 85 Topics in three Categories (4, 5, and 6), and
football, with just under 80 Topics in two Categories (9 and 10). Then there's
hockey and Auto Racing with two Categories and 40 to 50 Topics each.

But wait, there's more. If you look a little further, you'll find a
tax-free haven of rich data deposits for all those other sports, too.
Cycling, with forty or more Topics on everything from mountain biking to the
Tour De France; or Skating & Skiing, with Topics covering cross-country,
downhill, water-skiing, and figure skating. There are Categories on Martial
Arts, Soccer, Boxing & Wrestling, Golf, Weight-training, and Horse Racing.
Plus information on volleyball, softball, bowling, tennis...even survival
games.

There's even an area devoted to playing games. Sports games, of course.
Although some folks wouldn't consider it to be a sport, it IS competitive, and
recreational, and does involve physical activity (as anyone who has ever
wielded a joystick can attest to).

Put it all together with a software library deep in games, graphics,
stats, and utilities. Mix in regular weekly Real-Time Conferences, Pro
Football Pool, 1995 Baseball Schedule, and NFL Offensive Player Stats. Then
mention the Fantasy Sports League RoundTable (Page 421, Keyword FSL, detailed
in this month's GEnie Gamer column) and you've got a package that would
impress the most jaded sports fanatic. Any more, and you'd blow 'em right out
of their Air Jordans.

Well, maybe you ought to sit them down, son. Because there's more. A lot
more.

\\\ Wide World of Sports The world's a big place. But on GEnie it's a
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ small world. You never know who you might run into,
where you might end up, or what you might find.

If you're running GEnie For Windows, you might notice an icon on the main
screen labeled Travel. Clicking on it (or typing M1907 at any GEnie prompt)
will take you to the Travel and Cultures Page. There, you'll find a gateway to
the world -- Canada, Europe, Germany, Japan, or the British Isles -- and a
portal to a whole new world of sports.

Visiting the British Isles (Page 720, Keyword BRITISH) and checking into
Category 4 of their Bulletin Board will uncover some true sports treasures.
Soccer (known as football everywhere but North America), Rugby (known as
"real" football to its disciples, who are reputed to "eat their dead"), and
Cricket (a baseball-like game where the field is called a pitch, the pitchers
are known as bowlers, and the bases are referred to as wickets), are three
prime examples.

A short hop over to Japan (Page 225, Keyword JAPAN) and booking passage
in Category 3 of their Bulletin Board will transport you to an exotic land
where sports from different countries co-exist in harmony. Sumo, Japan's
National sport. And Yakyu (baseball), America's Pastime. With the recent
major league arrival of a sensational young pitcher with a strange corkscrew
wind-up, no player strikes or lockouts, and teams with names like the Swallows
and the Dragons, tourism in Topic 19 could really start to take off.

Airfare to Deutschland (Page 725, Keyword GERMANY) is a real bargain with
GEnie's new, lower rates. And a sightseeing trip to Category 17 of their
Bulletin Board will pay off with the latest Bundesliga (football league) news,
scores and standings; passionate discussions about tennis, DFB Pokal (the
German Soccer Cup), and German Ice Hockey; plus current and historical
perspectives on other popular German sports, like biathlon, bobsledding, luge,
cross-country skiing, and ski-jumping.

With 35 countries to choose from, travel in Europe (Page 715, Keyword
EUROPE) can be fast-paced and exciting, but there's always time for the latest
sports news from Italy (Category 8, Topic 13), Scandinavia, Finland, or
Iceland (Category 12, Topic 11). Soccer dominates the discussions, but in
Europe, almost anything goes. For instance, have you ever heard of a game
that's a cross between ice hockey and soccer and played on a rink with a
little red ball? It's called Bandy. And unless you stopped by the Europe
RoundTable (or hail from Sweden), you'd never know.

A little closer to home (for some), is the Great White North. Also known
as the Canada RoundTable (Page 1225, Keyword CANADA). By plane, train or
automobile, it's a trip worth taking. Especially when it comes to sports --
like hockey (the Great Canadian National Pastime), figure skating, or even
skydiving.

Even closer to home is the USA East RoundTable (page 1470, Keyword EAST),
where you can tap in to the 1996 Summer Olympics being held next year in
Atlanta. Whether it's the latest scoop on ticket prices, or an update on the
Braves' new stadium, you'll be glad you made the trip.

\\\ Online Sports Treasure Hunting You'd be forgiven if you thought that
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ was the end of it. What sensible person
could possibly imagine that there'd be any more? But that's exactly what there
is. More. Better sit down again.

Clicking another icon on the main screen of GEnie For Windows, the one
labeled Entertainment, will take you to the Hobby and Entertainment area at
Page 1906. There, you'll be greeted with a long list of RoundTables. Take a
close look at that list, and you'll discover some more unexpected sources of
online sports treasures.

The Outdoors RoundTable (Page 180, Keyword OUTDOORS) is home to all sorts
of outdoor sports activities. In Category 17, you'll discover Topics covering
rockhounding, climbing, spelunking (cave exploration), archery, and kiting.
Category 18 is devoted to camping, hiking, and backpacking. Categories 19 and
20 play host to hunting and fishing enthusiasts. And Category 28 is dedicated
to water sports like kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting.

For people who prefer to play under the water instead of on it, the Scuba
RoundTable (Page 650, Keyword SCUBA) offers one of the largest and most
comprehensive online resources for the professional and amateur diver. You'll
find everything from training information and dive medicine, to Ikelite
Underwater Systems online product support, to underwater hockey.

While the Sports RoundTable covers Auto Racing, the Automotive RoundTable
(Page 755, Keyword AUTO) takes it a few MPH further. NASCAR, IndyCar, and
Formula One; drag racing, sprints and go-karts; race schedules, rallys, and
fan clubs. Even real-time racing coverage. Category 8 in the Auto RoundTable
is an online haven for anyone who feels the need for speed.

Around the corner, in the Motorcycling RoundTable (Page 1155, Keyword
MOTO), two-wheeled speed freaks can go full throttle on supercross, motocross,
dirt track and roadracing events in Cats 30 to 35. And the gravity-challenged
can touch down in Category 2 of the Aviation RoundTable (Page 410, Keyword
AVIATION) for the latest news and information on airshows and aviation events.

If you're still standing (or sitting) after all that, and have any time
left over for anything other than sleeping, you can always pay a visit to the
News and Sports area at Page 1910. On top of major newspapers like the Boston
Globe, the Chicago Tribune, the LA Times and San Francisco Chronicle, the
hungry sports fan can enjoy direct access to North America's top sports
magazine, Sports Illustrated (Page 1726, Keyword SPILLUSTRATE).

\\\ It's a Small World GEnie's a big place and it's a small world. A
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ world of weekend athletes, part-time players, and
big-league fans. A world of simple expectations and humble means. Where sports
is something you do for fun.

You don't need big contracts, agents, TV deals, and product endorsements.
All you need is some spare time, a little enthusiasm. And GEnie.

...On Sysop Glen Johnson
`````````````````````````
by Kathryn Ptacek
_____
/ ____)
/ /___
/ /( )
/ (__) /
(______/len Johnson is one of those folks who doesn't talk much about himself.
He just quietly goes about his business, managing the Sports RoundTable, the
Fantasy Sports Leagues RoundTable, The Pro Football Pool, AND the Radio &
Electronics RoundTable. And making it look easy.
"I've always been a sports fan, an aficionado of bulletin boards and
online services," he reveals, "so I married the two pastimes." GEnie members
are glad he did.
\\\ In the Beginning Glen has long been acquainted with computers, having
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ been a self-confessed "Commodore 64 junkie" back in the
mid-80s. He admits to having spent nearly all his time in the Commodore areas
of another online service, and when the Sysop left there to come to GEnie,
Glen followed.
For nearly seven years Glen ran his own private sports-related Bulletin
Board Service, which he closed just a couple of years ago. "I've been on GEnie
since almost its inception," he says, "and in the early years, it didn't have
a sports RoundTable. I submitted a proposal in 1989 and opened the Sports
RoundTable in August of 1989 with another Sysop."
In 1990 he took on the job of running the Pro Football Pool. "In March of
1990 I got a call from GEnie asking if I would take over the RoundTable, and
agreed." But it didn't stop there; Glen's continued successes had placed him
in high demand. In 1993, when founding Sysop Larry Ledlow retired, he assumed
control of the Radio & Electronics RoundTable. And just a year later he
created a new RoundTable devoted to the growing phenomenon of fantasy sports
leagues.
"The Fantasy Sports RoundTable is a 'child' of the Sports RoundTable," he
recalls. "We created it in 1994 and it's dedicated solely to online fantasy
leagues of all sports. One of my most enjoyable experiences as Sports RT Sysop
was having Hall of Fame relief pitcher Rollie Fingers from the Oakland A's as
a guest."
One thing led to another and before long Glen's online life got even more
interesting. This time, it was the Radio & Electronics RoundTable. "We
acquired the content of the Consumer Electronics RT a couple of months ago,"
he explains, "so if it plugs in or runs on batteries, chances are we'll have
it. Amateur Radio, shortwave, satellites, electronics, repair, TVs, VCRs, all
things audio and video."
\\\ Breaker, Breaker Glen, a Systems Analyst by day, started young with
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ amateur radio, obtaining his ham license at age 17.
"It was during the CB radio craze of the '70s when a ham radio operator found
me on the CB bands and introduced me to amateur radio. I now hold an Extra
Class license, the highest level amateur radio license there is, and am a
certified examiner. I am part of a team that administers exams to prospective
amateurs. My wife is a an amateur radio operator too. She studied for the
exams by reading books in the bathtub while pregnant with our first child."
The son of a housewife and a baker, Glen has played baseball and
football, although never professionally. His favorite sport is football, and
he's a big New York Giants fan.
Sports and computers go very much hand-in-hand, it seems. "I think
computers have had a dramatic effect on professional sports in terms of
statistics," he says. "Sportscasters have at their fingertips an amazing
amount of statistical information, the value of which, well, is open to
interpretation."
Some of it, he points out with wry humor, is ridiculous. "We don't really
need to know what someone's batting average is on Saturday nights against left
handed pitchers in the month of June with runners on first and third on
artificial turf under the lights in the 5th inning."
\\\ A Penny's Worth You would think with all that going on that Glen
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ doesn't have much time for anything else. But he does
have a new interest: numismatics, or coin collecting.
It all began when his wife was digging in the garden at their West
Orange, NJ home when she found an 1882 Indian Head cent.
"We bought a metal detector, grabbed a shovel, and turned the backyard
into a mine field. We found several interesting coins. Then, I got a 1995
Doubled-Die Lincoln Cent in change from a Burger King. That penny turned out
to be worth more than $50, and a new hobby was born."
Football ... sports ... amateur radio ... and now numismatics. With that
hobby in mind, we have to wonder if another RoundTable might not lay ahead for
this multi-talented GEnie Sysop. If it does, GEnie members will once again
have cause to celebrate.
////////////////////////////////////
How To Have Fun Without Really Buying
``````````````````````````````````````

by Lorna Flitton
`````````````````
_ _
/ \ / )
/ \/ /
/ /\ /
(_/ \_/ot all the sports you enjoy this summer will be on the field, in the
park, or on TV. Some of them will be right there in front of you, on your
computer monitor.
With the flood of baseball, football, hockey and basketball games hitting
the shelves this year alone, your only problem will be deciding which one is
best for you (assuming, of course, you're not looking for something other than
baseball, football, hockey or basketball; if you are, you've got another
problem. Because other than the odd soccer game, there aren't that many
kicking around).
Well, don't despair. There are some pretty decent shareware sports sims
available right here on GEnie for the price of the download. You can try them
out for free; buy them if you like them. And a lot of them have absolutely
nothing to do with pitching, kicking, skating, or dribbling.
\\\ Start Your Engines Grand Prix 2.0, from Wizard Games of Scotland,
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ proves that a great simulator doesn't need a lot of
flashy graphics, slick animations, full-motion video, and stereo sound-tracks
to be challenging, entertaining and thoroughly addictive. Relying on simple
text graphics and some really clever programming, GP grabs hold quickly and
never lets go.
In this racing simulation, you don't drive the cars. You manage the
drivers, the mechanics, and the money.
You can choose any one of twenty teams -- from the powerful, nearly-
invincible McLaren Racing Team, to the wimpy, nearly-invisible Wizard team.
You are responsible for recruiting drivers, hiring and firing production
staff, designing, constructing and testing new cars, rebuilding damaged cars,
and making critical race-day decisions. Do you go with wet or dry tires in
uncertain weather conditions? Should you switch your Number one and Number two
drivers?
You start out with a $20 million line of credit. But it doesn't take much
to blow it all. Your only source of income is from winning races and gaining
sponsors. Lose, and you'll go broke.
If it sounds simple, it isn't. Drivers and staff will desert you; cars
will break down and crash, divers will get hurt, or signed to bigger contracts
with rival teams.
To win, or even survive, you need to aggressively pursue new car
development. There are five specialists, and five principle car components --
aerodynamics (or body), chassis, electronics, transmission, and engine. You
can buy four models of each components from nine different manufacturers. Or
hire the best talent, and try to make your own.
This sim is brain food, without the eye candy. Download File 389
GRANDPRX.ZIP from Library 2 of the Automotive RoundTable (Page 755, Keyword
AUTO), and feed your head. Registered versions with load/save features, team
and driver utility, and product support, cost a modest $25. For
IBM-compatibles.
\\\ And They're Off! For a horse of a different color, try Handicap Horse
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Racing, by Jerome Harris. This detailed horse racing
simulation has more features, options and applications than you can shake a
riding crop at.
For openers, you can buy your own horses at auction. Or breed them. And
once you own a nag of your own, you can even customize the blanket, jersey,
cap and number colors. There's a huge stable of over 800 horses, including
many well-known top money winners. And races can be run from 5 furlongs to a
mile and one-eighth, with a field of up to 16 horses in each race.
Breeding and buying play important roles in this simulation. Horses are
rated for tangibles like weight, strength and endurance, plus intangibles like
desire and energy, and can actually improve in performance with experience.
Buying better stock or breeding a less competitive animal with a champion
thoroughbred are two of many ways to improve your stable and start winning the
big purses.
HHR employs some nice VGA graphics and animation to spice things up. And
it supports almost every form of betting and handicapping known to horse
racing, including Exacta, Trifecta, Daily Double, and Pari-Mutual.
If you get annoyed with the way the jockeys are riding your horses, you
can even ride them yourself. If you do, the race is run in turns and you can
make tactical decisions, like when to tuck-in on the rail and save ground, or
when to stay outside. Talk about hands-on ownership!
Handicap Horse Racing is a great-looking program for IBM-compatibles that
really manages to capture the excitement and allure of the Sport of Kings.
Unfortunately, many of the really cool things -- like breeding, handicapping
and horse auctioning -- have been disabled in the Shareware version. Still,
for racing fans of all ages, it's well worth a look. Download File 3465
HORSE.ZIP from Library 7 of the Sports RoundTable (Page 215, Keyword SPORTS).
Registered versions are available for $25, and a full-featured commercial
version can be had for $68.35.
\\\ Gone Fishin' There's something fishy about this next sports sim, but
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ don't let the title throw you. ScaryFish version 2.1, from
PMP Software, has nothing to do with sharks, piranha, or Moray eels. It's a
fishing simulator.
That's right, a fishing simulator.
So, what is it and what does it do, you might ask? Well, except for the
lack of mosquitoes and bad weather, the game is a fairly realistic simulation
of a classic summertime sport -- complete with hooks, lines, and sinkers.
It consists of a series of "Worlds," each with its own lakes, streams and
rivers, fish populations, and terrain. Players create a character that travels
around these worlds on a fantasy fishing odyssey, looking for the biggest and
baddest fish.
Once you find a suitable fishin' hole, you have to decide on what rod and
reel to go with, which weight and length of line to use, whether to try some
live bait or a funky new lure, what kind of weights and floats to use, and so
on. Casting is simply a matter of positioning the cursor on a likely spot and
hitting the Return key. SF 2.1 lets you adjust drag, set the hook, and reel in
anything you manage to snag.
With the money you earn from all those catches, you can then visit one of
the stores to upgrade your gear. Each world has a different store with an odd
assortment of rods, reels, line, live bait and lures, plus more exotic toys
like Polarized glasses, Depthfinders, and Fishfinders (LCRs). The better the
quality (and higher the cost), the better the chances of hooking and landing a
fish.
ScaryFish runs on IBM-compatible PCs, features simple graphics and
animation, and employs a basic keyboard interface. There are hundreds of
species of fish scattered randomly throughout each world, and the intro screen
doubles nicely as an animated aquarium screen-saver.
Kick back, relax, and download File 36157 SCARY21.ZIP from Library 7 of
the IBM-PC RoundTable (Page 615, Keyword IBMPC). Registration costs a mere
$15, with Sequel Worlds and a World creation utility available for a few extra
bucks. Like the old song says, "Summertime, and the livin' is easy."
\\\ Credit Card Roulette When it comes to off-the-shelf commercial
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ software, making the right decision is no small
problem. As you've no doubt discovered, they can be a tad expensive. And
unless you've got a very understanding bank manager, a rich relative, or
somebody else's credit card, a bad choice can really ruin your weekend.
With GEnie, you can spend your weekend playing with a new shareware
instead of playing credit card roulette.
\\\ 1 Year From Now News of a brewing football strike in Great Britain
someone points out that "football" is just the English name for "soccer."
\\\ 3 Years From Now Computer sports receive a face-lift with the
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ introduction of online broadcasters who deliver
play-by-play descriptions of the action for the benefit of spectators on other
computer networks. This new innovation is called "256-Color Commentary," even
though most people receive it as ASCII text.
\\\ 7 Years From Now When a football strike, a rugby strike, and a
The Planetary Society
``````````````````````

by Keith A. Garrett
````````````````````
_____
/ / ) /
/ (_/ /
(_____/xygen is discovered in the atmosphere of Europa.
Multiple cometary fragments strike Jupiter at 130,000 miles per hour,
throwing up clouds of debris as large as the Earth.
Astronomers detect dust clouds around several nearby stars that may be
signs of planetary formation.
A multi-million channel search for narrowband transmissions in space
detects 56 that may be signals from extraterrestrial civilizations.
This ain't science fiction, Bubba. It's science fact. Topics such as
these are the purview of the Planetary Society, the largest non-governmental
space organization on Earth. The Society, founded in 1980 by Carl Sagan and
Bruce Murray, is dedicated to the exploration of the planets and the search
for extraterrestrial life. And despite budget cutbacks in the governmental
space programs, this search gets more exciting every year.
To see what I mean, visit the Planetary Society RoundTable on Page 1630
(Keyword PLANETS). Here are the kinds of phenomena you'll discover:
\\\ Shoemaker-Levy 9 This is the name of a comet, not a science-fiction
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ show. In particular, it's the comet that struck
Jupiter in July 1994. This was more than just a big fireworks display;
terrestrial scientists are still sifting through the data they collected as a
result of the impacts (plural because the comet was already in pieces before
it arrived at the fifth planet). To examine some of this data yourself, look
in the RoundTable's Bulletin Board at Category 9, Topic 1: Comet
Shoemaker-Levy 9. Or, you can download a text file or two on the subject, such
as File 109 CRASH.TXT, or File 238 MACRASH.TXT, both in Library 1.
My favorites, though, are the pretty pictures. First we have the photos
of the various fragments striking Jupiter, in files CRASH1.JPG through
CRASH9.JPG (File numbers 187 and 192-199, in Library 1). Then there is the
spectacular artwork of Michael Carroll in Library 4, as evidenced by File 176
SL9_HITS.JPG, File 177 COMETSL9.JPG, and File 183 SLCLOUDS.JPG.
\\\ The Mars Rover The Planetary Society closely follows the testing and
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ progress of the Marsokhod rover, a Russian-designed,
six-wheeled, 300-pound remote-controlled machine whose name means 'Mars
walker'. The rover was recently put through its paces at the Kilauea caldera
in Hawaii by a team of scientists from McDonnell Douglas Aerospace, the NASA
Ames Research Center, and Russia's Space Research Institute, in conjunction
with the JASON Foundation and The Planetary Society itself.
You can read all about it in the RoundTable's Bulletin Board. Category
26, Topic 1 (Hawaii Planetary Rover Tests) is full of reports about the Hawaii
expedition and the rover's performance.
Also, the RoundTable was host to two special Real-Time Conferences about
the Mars rover earlier this year. Both featured special guests: One was with
John Garvey of McDonnell Douglas Aerospace, and the other welcomed Russian and
American scientists involved in the Hawaii testing. Transcripts for both
Conferences are available for download in the Software Library; these and
other rover-related files are listed below.
Lib: 9 File: 167 VOLCANO.TXT Summary of rover and its testing
Lib: 9 File: 172 RTC FEB. 20,1995 RTC transcript -- rover engineers
\\\ Life Out There This has to be the Planetary Society's most intriguing
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ line of research -- looking for signs of extra-
terrestrial life. This field is being pushed ahead constantly, not only by new
technology, but by new ideas. The three major avenues of research are
currently radio signal detection, planetary exploration within the solar
system, and the search for planets orbiting other stars.
Scanning the cosmos for signs of artificially generated radio sources is
the hallmark of the SETI Institute (SETI being the Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence). File 270 PHOENIX!.TXT details one of the Institute's programs,
Project Phoenix. This project involves a search of about 1,000 stars like our
own sun for signs of intelligent life. You can read about other projects in
the Bulletin Board. Category 14 is dedicated to SETI.
In the area of local planetary studies, scientists keeping an eye on
Europa -- one of Jupiter's better-known moons -- were recently surprised to
discover oxygen in the moon's atmosphere. Is it an indication that there's
some kind of life on the frozen moon? Read File 259 EUROPAO2.TXT in Library 3
to find out more.
Astronomers are also examining other stars, both near and far, for signs
that planets are orbiting them. (Planets being a good place to harbor life,
y'know.) File 215 PROPLYDS.TXT in Library 3 is about this very subject
('proplyds' being short for 'protoplanetary disks'). Some of the galactic
locations where this may be going on are in the local neighborhood, like the
star Vega. Others, however, are farther away, such as in the Orion Nebula.
File 220 ORIONNEB.GIF is a photo of this nebula's protoplanetary disks, and
there's a closeup of these disks in File 221 PROPLYDS.GIF, both in Library 3.
For more discussion of the possibility of planets Out There, try Bulletin
Board Category 17: Extrasolar Planets.
\\\ Space Art One of the hot spots in the RoundTable's Software Library is
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ the collection of space art by some of the world's leading
planetary artists. While there may not be billions and billions of heavenly
bodies here (thus making this library subordinate to the actual universe),
there are certainly kilobytes and kilobytes of beautiful graphics. Here's a
partial listing:
Lib: 4 File: 178 IO_JUPTR.JPG Jupiter seen from Io
Lib: 1 File: 190 BINARY_SUNSET.JPG Binary sunset painting
Lib: 4 File: 208 BACKBONE.JPG The Milky Way Galaxy
Lib: 4 File: 209 STARSEED.JPG Stars bursting forth from nebula
Lib: 4 File: 211 ECLIPSE.JPG 1991 solar eclipse from Hawaii
In addition to the beautiful paintings, the library also holds
breathtaking photographs, surely an artistic medium in itself. Some of the
more noteworthy pictures have already been detailed in the sections above, but
if you still haven't gotten enough, try Searching the Software Library using
the keywords 'photo' or 'image'.
If any of the above explorations have put a twinkle in your eye, then you
might be pleased to know that the Planetary Society is made up of people just
like you. You don't have to be a member to make full use of the RoundTable, of
course, but if you DO want to join the Society, you can do so online. Just
choose menu item 10 on the RoundTable's main menu.
(____)t's August and tempers are running short. Maybe you want a few choice
insults to hurl at that umpire, or at the practitioners of that Other American
Sport, politics. Or maybe you just want to get out of town, or get out some
big tubs and a few hoses and throw a tie-dye party. However you handle the dog
days of summer, GEnie can help!
This month's choices also feature several files on the Internet including
resources for the disabled, lists of sites for the Canadian government, and a
wonderful introductory text to the whole Net experience. If you haven't yet
explored the World Wide Web through GEnie's Internet Services, I urge you to
do so. There's a lot out there, if you can find it, and some of these files
will help even the most disoriented find their way.
With or without the Internet, you'll still find a variety of information
hidden away in GEnie's Software Libraries: from online comic books that will
make you smile, to position papers on recent legislation that will make you
think, to advice columns that will help you get ahead at work. If it's
happening, it's happening on GEnie. Don't just take my word for it, look for
(_____/dds are pretty good that you and I have never met. They're pretty good
that we never will meet. But that doesn't mean that you can't know me and it
doesn't mean that I can't know you. That's one of the most incredible aspects
of being online, to me.
I know people that are married now, who would never have met if it
weren't for GEnie.
I know people who couldn't bring themselves to go to work, after the
death of someone they'd only typed to, while online. So real was their sense
of loss, so deep was their feeling for the other person, that they reacted in
a way that they might not have even for a neighbor they saw in the flesh every
day, or for a family member who was a part of every important holiday
celebration.
I know people who have said things online that they would never tell even
their spouse, so deep is the trust they place in their confidant. And I've
seen what happens when that trust is misplaced, and a secret is revealed. The
sense of betrayal felt is as strong as if it had been a co-worker in the
office.
\\\ Baggage Handling There is no such thing as a perfect means of
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ communication. There are any number of compromises
involved in speaking face-to-face, talking on the phone, writing letters or
sending email. But electronic communication is in many ways much more pure
than any other.
When you write to someone online, they have no way of knowing if you have
red hair and freckles or if you're bald. Unless you tell them, there is no way
they would ever know how tall you are (or aren't), what kinds of clothes you
wear, what kind of car you drive, or what neighborhood you call home.
Online strips away almost all of the baggage that can get in the way of
real communication. Because you so easily start communicating on a much deeper
level, it's easier to decide if you like the person you're reading, or not.
And if you do, the odds are very good that you'll like them a lot.
Much has been made in the news media lately about the problems that some
have had online. Parents trying to keep their kids from the weirdos who log on
to prey in the electronic schoolyard, groups organized to champion causes that
ought to embarrass them, and the horror and disgust of logging on and
downloading e-mail with unspeakable pictures.
I'm proud that we've not seen that kind of activity on GEnie, and that
problems of any kind are very rare, even going back a decade.
\\\ Gated Communities GEnie has long had a reputation as being the
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ friendliest of the online networks. It's very rare
that any post goes unanswered, and it's almost unheard of if the post is a
plea for help -- whether for understanding how to add RAM to a computer, or in
dealing with the news that a loved one is terminally ill.
Where some places online have a frontier quality about them, wild and
unruly, or a big-city attitude where everyone walks quickly to their next
destination without making eye contact with anyone else or saying anything to
anybody... GEnie remains a very friendly place to be.
Someone has said that in the Electronic Information Age, online networks
are the gated communities that survive and thrive, not in spite of their
boundaries and rules and their stand-offishness to the outside world, but
because of them.
I don't know if I agree with that entirely, but I do know that after a
long night of (please pardon me for this) Surfing The Net, it's nice to have a
safe and comfortable place to come home to, on GEnie.
I hope it's always like that.
The GEnie Gamer: It's Just a Fantasy
``````````````````````````````````````

by Jay Kee
```````````
____
(_ _)
/ /
/ /
_/ /
(____)t's a Sunday afternoon. A perfect day for football. If you put your ear
to the goalpost you can almost hear the crushing hits, the bone-jarring
tackles, the roar of the crowd... the painful cries and woeful wails of
armchair quarterbacks...
"Aw geez! Not another FIELD goal, man. You need t'go for it!"
"Watch for the blitz, watch for the blitz! Oww! I'll bet that hurt."
"Hello, McFly? How 'bout putting some pressure on the quarterback,
fergawshsakes."
"Go long, go long! He's wide open! Great. Nice throw.... Wrong jersey,
but nice throw. Someone gimme an aspirin."
Out of this frustration, the seeds of discontent were planted in the soil
of opportunity, and grew into the first sports pools and fantasy leagues.
It was fertile ground for competitive imaginations, one that grew from a
small garden of pencil-and-paper activity into a giant field of computer-
assisted passion. Supported by a windfall of simulations, utility software,
and computer games, fantasy leagues soon extended into other sports --
basketball, hockey, racing, even pro wrestling.
Disgruntled sports fans gave fantasy leagues a start; computers gave them
a boost. But online services like GEnie put them into orbit.
\\\ Supply and Demand GEnie has long been an online gamer's paradise, so
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ it was natural to find fantasy sports leagues
appearing in the Sports RoundTable early in the game. But demand quickly
exceeded supply, and fantasy leaguers now have their very own area -- the
Fantasy Sports Leagues RoundTable (GEnie Page 421, Keyword FSL).
The heart of the FSL RoundTable is the Bulletin Board. There, you'll find
Categories for each of the Official GEnie Fantasy Leagues -- Baseball
(Category 2), Football (Category 4), Basketball (Cat 3), Hockey (Cat 5), and
Auto Racing (Cat 6) -- plus Categories for Independent Leagues (Cat 8 through
13), the United Simulation Football League (Cat 16), and Fantasy Sports
Newsgroups (Cat 15).
Whatever your personal tastes, whatever the season, you're bound to find
a league you like: Basketball in spring, baseball in summer, football in
autumn, or hockey in winter. If you don't, you can always start your own. And
there's even a Category for that -- Cat 14, "Managing Your Own Fantasy
League."
\\\ Fantasy Fibbles The whole idea behind fantasy sports leagues is
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ fairly simple: get a bunch of friends together, give
each one a team, draft players, generate a schedule, play out the season.
Party.
Those are the basics. But there are as many variations to that theme as
there are fans who secretly think they could coach or manage better than the
guy with the clipboard. And GEnie has them covered.
For openers, most fantasy leagues fall into two categories: rotisserie,
or performance-based leagues; and simulation, or stat-based leagues.
The first uses active players from major league teams and awards points
based on their real-world performance -- which can focus on offense, defense,
or both. Owners generate lineups and "play" each other (usually once a week)
by compiling the points scored by the players in their lineup during that
time-frame. If a player bats .600, scores three hat-tricks, or rushes for 400
yards, the fantasy owner gets a ton of points. If a player is benched, gets
injured, or abducted by aliens, the owner scores a big, fat zero. The one with
the most points (also called "fibbles" for some obscure reason) at the end of
the week, wins the game.
The other variation drafts players in much the same way, but those
players may come from any era in history and games are played out under the
control of a league Commissioner using software like Strat-O-Matic Baseball or
Front Page Sports: Football Pro 95. Lineups, trades, and substitutions are
supplemented by additional coaching options, such as the detailed game plans
generated by FPS: Football Pro, or the offensive/defensive instructions
employed by Strat-O-Matic.
\\\ Remedial Rocket Science The Official GEnie Fantasy Leagues all employ
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ the performance-based rotisserie format. The
scoring system is offense-based and doesn't require a degree in rocket science
to follow. But there are enough differences from one league to the next to
justify doing a bit of homework before jumping in. Before you reach for the
Prozac, relax. There aren't any massive document files to download. Just check
Topics 7, 8, 9, and 10 in Category 1, Welcome to Fantasy Sports for the
Official Rules.
Some of the other fantasy leagues -- like Big Blue Fantasy Hockey (Cat
13), the Independent Fantasy Football Leagues (Cat 11), or the United
Simulation Football League (Cat 16) -- use the simulation format. You can find
out which program is being used to simulate the games by posting a message in
any of the topics, but you won't need the software to play.
Of course, if you're running a league, software does make a difference.
In rotisserie leagues, translating real-world performance into fantasy league
points has been greatly enhanced by tracking software like Fantasy Football
Assistant (File 192, FFA11.ZIP, FSL in the FSL Library). Would-be league
commissioners will find all sorts of useful information on software and
utilities, plus a gold mine of tips, hints and informative discussion, in
Category 14, Managing Your Own Fantasy League.
\\\ Competitive Destiny For frustrated couch coaches, fantasy leagues are
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ a dream come true. It's a bit like being George
Steinbrenner and Sparky Anderson all in one package. You're the owner,
president, general manager, and coach. You manage the money (if the league
includes salaries), handle the draft, make the trades, sign free agents,
select starting lineups and rosters, and guide the team's competitive destiny.
No more sitting around agonizing over someone else's mistakes; now YOU get to
screw up.
For fantasy-leaguers everywhere, GEnie takes the game to the next level.
All of the daily give-and-take of managing a sports franchise takes place in
cyberspace with other owners. All the stats, all the lineup and roster
changes, all the wheeling and dealing is right there, a phone call away. No
need to figure out whose house you're meeting at this week, no problems with
conflicting schedules, no arguments over who brings the refreshments. Drafts
are conducted in Real-Time Conferences, Wire Services produce highlights of
each game, and no one has to bring a calculator.
\\\ Hockey Night in GEnie It's a Wednesday night. A perfect night for
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ hockey. If you put your ear to the modem you can
almost hear the crushing checks, the whistling slapshots, the roar of the
crowd... the joyful cries and plaintive wails of would-be Mike Keenans...
"I can't believe you traded Wayne Gretzky! For a rookie goalie like
Martin Brodeur? No way."
"Wait a minute. If Quebec's in Minnesota, and Minnesota's in Dallas, and
New Jersey's in Memphis, then where the heck is Winnipeg?"
"""""""""""""""""""
____
(_ _)
/ /
/ /
_/ /
(____) am a techno-nerd.
This means I would not likely be the first person you'd come to for
advice on a subject like, say, sports. (You might even say I'd be out of my
league.)
However, I'm much more knowledgeable about COMPUTER sports. (By "computer
sports" I mean programs that simulate sports, of course -- not sports that
make USE of computers, like the Mouse Toss or Word Processor Wrestling.)
That's right, plug me in to a sporting event in cyberspace and it's a whole
different ball game. (Okay, okay, no more puns for the rest of the article. I
promise.)
So, if you're like me and would rather risk a sprained joystick hand than
a twisted ankle, pick your sport from those below and let's see what GEnie's
IBM-Compatible Libraries have to offer.
\\\ Football Our first picks are the football game simulators. Here's
\\\\\\\\\\\\ your chance to be the coach of your own team of large, sweaty
guys who like to run into each other at high speed. Look in the IBM RoundTable
(IBMPC) for:
Lib: 7 File: 19672 CFB40.ZIP Cunning Football
Lib: 7 File: 25795 BYFB100.ZIP BackYard Football
Lib: 7 File: 29799 DEFENS22.ZIP Defense 2.2
Lib: 15 File: 32732 KCF.ZIP Keyboard Coach Fantasy Football
Lib: 15 File: 33227 1ST35.ZIP 1st & Goal Fantasy Football.
Next, we have some offerings for the more serious football fan. These
are handicapping and prediction programs. Gooooo statistics! In IBMPC
there's:
Lib: 7 File: 33255 PFPICKS5.ZIP Pro Football Picks 5.0
Lib: 15 File: 33988 4CAST20W.ZIP NFL Forecaster (Windows)
Lib: 12 File: 34019 FSG2.LZH Football Scores GEnie
Lib: 7 File: 36068 PFEDGE94.ZIP Pro Football Edge
And in the Windows RoundTable (WINDOWS) we have:
Lib: 11 File: 3193 FCAST30W.ZIP NFL Forecaster for Windows
Lib: 11 File: 2383 PROPICK4.ZIP ProPick.
Now if you're a certified football NUT, you'll also drool over a couple
of decorative items. First there's a collection of Big 8 logos -- useful as
Windows wallpaper -- in WINDOWS Library 6 (File 2373 BIG8-BMP.ZIP). But my
favorite is CLAIRE15.GIF (File 35799 in IBMPC Library 14). This is a picture
of a female Dallas Cowboys fan in a helmet and a bikini.
Ah, football...
\\\ Baseball My advice to baseball fans is to load up on computerized
\\\\\\\\\\\\ baseball games like the ones listed below. That way, when
the next strike hits, you'll be able to keep yourself entertained! (At least
until your disk drive demands better working conditions and starts picketing.)
Baseball Games in IBMPC:
Lib: 7 File: 36609 EPICBB.ZIP Epic Baseball
Lib: 7 File: 26602 LNDRV41.ZIP Fantasy Sports Baseball
Baseball Games in WINDOWS:
Lib: 1 File: 2915 TOSDEMO.ZIP Time Out Sports Baseball (Demo)
(Here's another tip: to get the maximum enjoyment out of these games,
don't start playing them until after you've invited over a few beer-drinking
buddies. And make sure you've got peanuts and hot dogs a-plenty.)
If you have a team of your own to manage, or just like playing around
with baseball statistics (see -- sports fans can be nerds, too), then grab the
following files.
Baseball Utilities in IBMPC:
Lib: 3 File: 14475 GBG.ARC Game-By-Game (statistics manager)
Lib: 7 File: 20295 SOFFBL23.ZIP Soff Balls (record keeper)
Baseball Utilities in WINDOWS:
Lib: 11 File: 2023 STATS.ZIP Baseball statistics
\\\ Basketball The bad news is that none of the basketball programs on
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ GEnie will make you famous, or land you any multi-
million-dollar endorsement deals. (In that respect, they can't be TRUE sports
simulations.) But the good news is: You don't have to hire a manager. You can
do all the coaching yourself, and if you don't like your teammates, you can
turn them off!
(All of the following files are in the IBMPC Software Library.)
Basketball Games:
Lib: 7 File: 36560 3POINT.ZIP 3 Point Basketball
Lib: 7 File: 37517 UBA201.ZIP Ultimate Basketball Assn. demo
There's not as much available for basketball statistics nuts as there is
for football and baseball, but we do have one: BASKETL.ZIP (in Library 15,
File 37257); it's a sort of basketball spreadsheet program. And we've got
Windows wallpaper, too -- featuring the Chicago Bulls, no less. Look in
Library 14 for File 29356 BULLS.ZIP in the IBMPC Library.
\\\ Golf Now THIS is my sport! (On computer, that is. In the real world I
\\\\\\\\ have trouble hitting anything smaller than a volleyball.) There are
a handful of golf games in the IBMPC Library...
Lib: 7 File: 292 PC-GOLF.EQE PC-Golf
Lib: 7 File: 2786 NCRGOLF.ARC NCR Golf (CGA)
Lib: 7 File: 6168 TEED-OFF.ARC Teed-Off (CGA)
Lib: 7 File: 13826 MINIGOLF.ARC Miniature golf
Lib: 7 File: 15257 PC-GOLF.ARC BASIC miniature golf
Lib: 7 File: 37356 MINIGOLF.ZIP 3D Minigolf
The last one, 3D Minigolf, is my favorite of the batch (and the only one
uploaded since the 80's).
If you're looking for help figuring out your handicap, or managing a
local golf league, or tracking your scores over time, then we've got plenty
for you.
Golf Utilities in IBMPC:
Lib: 5 File: 18187 GOLFPGM1.ZIP The Golf Shop (part 1 of 2)
Lib: 5 File: 18189 GOLFPGM2.ZIP The Golf Shop (part 2 of 2)
Lib: 7 File: 33366 HANDICAP.EXE Handicapping program
Lib: 7 File: 30300 PGT30.ZIP Track your scores & averages
Lib: 7 File: 29622 GOLFSCY2.ZIP Golf Secretary league manager
Lib: 15 File: 34050 PGTW11.ZIP Personal Golf Tracker (Windows)
Golf Utilities in WINDOWS:
Lib: 11 File: 2320 GOLFLR.ZIP Golf League Recorder
Lib: 11 File: 3397 WGOLFH42.ZIP Golf Handicapper 4.2
Golf Utilities in OS/2:
Lib: 21 File: 1975 SCORCARD.ZIP Golf scorecard
Now, if you happen to be a computer golfer like me, and you have one of
the commercial programs that use expansion courses, you might want to SEARCH
the IBMPC Library using the Keyword "golf" or "course." There are oodles of
courses for games like Mean 18, Links386, and Jack Nicklaus Golf -- courses
designed by players just like us.
\\\ Assorted Other Sports The above listings are the best-represented
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ sports in the IBM-compatible Software Libraries,
but they are by no means the only sports available. Here is a sampler of some
of the others (all in IBMPC).
Lib: 7 File: 32390 1_0.ZIP Soccer manager simulation
Lib: 7 File: 21291 MVP-H20S.ARC Organizer for office hockey pools
Lib: 3 File: 21061 SKILOG.LZH Ski Log record keeper
Lib: 3 File: 23844 BIKELG46.ZIP Bike Log record keeper
Lib: 3 File: 25430 RUNSTAT.ZIP Runners' journal & statistics
Lib: 3 File: 31178 FISHLOG3.ZIP Fishing database
Lib: 15 File: 28011 SWIMDB16.ZIP Swim team record keeper
\\\ Button-Pushing As you can see, sports via computer continues to gain
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ in prominence, thanks to nerds like me. I wonder how
long it will be before the Olympic Committee is forced to allow computer game
sports? They should really think about it; after all, it would be one way that
America could start catching up in the gold medal department.
\_/\_/hen it comes to 'good sports' in the Macintosh world, it's hard to
surpass Macintosh RoundTable Bulletin Board manager Diann "Swampy" Martin. As
President and Golf Chairman of the Highlands Seminole Boosters in Sebring,
Florida, Swampy and her PowerPC get quite a workout each May when the Boosters
sponsor their annual golf outing and annual banquet for distinguished guests
from Florida State University. Along with providing a lot of fun for the
participants, this event raises a substantial amount of money for scholarships
and other worthy activities.
Here are some of the tasks this dynamic duo pull off each year:
\\\ Heart and Soul "I maintain a mailmerge data base in TouchBase Pro
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ that generates mailing labels for two promotional
mailings to 250 golfers as well as invoices and thank-you letters to
sponsors," Diann says. "A ClarisWorks spreadsheet tracks receipts and
expenses, while another tracks golfer information such as teams, handicaps,
flights, payment status, and dinner tickets."
Creating all the promotional material, handouts, and signage is a
veritable desktop publishing Olympics. Swampy uses Freehand to generate all
the tournament and dinner printouts -- starting with press releases, posters,
and an attractive tri-fold brochure; moving on to rule, tee, and flight
sheets, golf cart tags, Mulligan tickets, sponsors' and longest drive signs,
and finishing up with the dinner tickets and programs. Even the certificate
award presented to the scholarship winner is done in Freehand.
As Swampy puts it: "When you host such luminaries as Florida State's head
football Coach, Bobby Bowden, and basketball coach Pat Kennedy, or the
University Athletic Director, Dave Hart, you want everything to be organized
and run smoothly. My PPC Macintosh is the heart and soul of being able to do
both."
When Swampy took over the golf tournament in 1988, the tournament
attracted 62 golfers and 80 dinner attendees. Under her stewardship, the event
has grown to 144 golfers (with more on a waiting list), and 250 happy diners.
Swampy's ability to produce professional-looking promotional materials at
low-cost for a non-profit organization makes more money available for
scholarships and other worthwhile activities.
Swampy's enthusiasm, organizational talents and desire to help people
shine through in her management of the Macintosh Bulletin Board, as well.
\\\ Down and Dirty If you're also a golfing enthusiast, you might want to
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ check out 32641 GA 2.3.SIT, a 'Golf Analyst' hypercard
stack that tracks your scores on individual courses and overall play. It even
estimates your handicap in case you want to hold a mini-tournament with
friends.
If contact sports are more to your taste (at least on a computer screen),
take a look at 33897 PM FOOTBALL 2.1 DEMO.SIT, the popular Playmaker Football.
Version 2.1 has "tons of new features, new NFL rules, the works." This demo
version is 'keyware': A $20 payment provides a personal key that unlocks the
complete version of the program. The Library also contains a variety of
supporting files, including 31614 COACHES HANDHANDBOOK.SIT, a compilation of
some of the best PlayMaker coaches' plays.
If football isn't down and dirty enough for you, really get down in the
dirt with 34090 DIRT BIKE ACTIONGAME.CPT. This realistic simulation provides a
variety of race-tracks and suspension settings, as well as careful attention
to physics (as in falling down). For more tracks and customized bikes,
download 34152 DIRT TRACKS & BIKES.CPT.
Hypercard-based program 33817 EXERCISELOG1.15.SIT makes staying in shape
a lot easier by storing information about each workout in an unlimited number
of sports. It offers an attractive and useful middle ground between
paper-based logs (in which you have to do all the tallying yourself) and
spread-sheet models (which tend to be too rigid for free-form information
entry).
From organizers to armchair athletes, the Macintosh RoundTables have
something for sports of all sorts. Play through next time you logon.
Amiga *StarShip* RoundTable \\
////////////////////////////////////
by Jim Meyer
`````````````

______
(__ __)
/ /
/ /
(_/he good news is that there's no baseball strike this year. The bad news,
though, is that I'm still something of a Mets fan, even though I've been in
California for six years. So I needed something to get my mind off the
baseball season, something to tide me over until those beefy guys start
tossing a pigskin around.

This particular Saturday found me browsing through the latest set of
files from the *StarShip* when the phone rang. It was Anna; she wanted to play
tennis. Now, anyone who has experienced a Sacramento summer knows that there
are better things to do when it's 110 degrees outside, but I've seen Anna in
her tennis outfit.

I told her I'd be over in ten minutes.

\\\ Riddle Me This I made it in eight. Anna answered the door with a
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ glass of iced tea in her hand and a quizzical look on her
face.

"What's up?" I asked.

"Oh, it's this puzzle I just got from the StarShip," she answered. "I
haven't quite gotten it figured out. Why don't you come up and have a look?" I
was right behind her.

The program turned out to be PICCROSS.LHA, File 25971. There are five
puzzles in all, each requiring you to utilize numeric clues to uncover a
picture. All of the puzzles consist of a grid. Each row and column contains a
certain number of squares that must be filled; clues at the start of each row
or column tell you how many consecutive squares there are.

"So if column two has eight consecutive squares..." Anna started, then
paused. "Wait! I've got it!" She started clicking fast and furious, and had
the puzzle solved in another minute. So much for any help from me!

Satisfied that she had gotten the hang of it, she closed PicCross and
asked, "Do you want to see this slick stock analysis program I downloaded?" I
was about to inquire about the tennis game, but an air-conditioned house beats
melting concrete. "Sure!" I answered.

\\\ All Downhill Anna proceeded to run STOCKS34.LHA, File 25988. This
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ versatile shareware program uses simple ASCII data files to
generate various charts displaying moving averages, trendlines and daily,
weekly, or monthly summaries of stock prices and trading volumes, and a lot
more.

"Well lookee here!" said Anna. "Remember a little computer company called
Commodore?" I winced at the memory. "One of the sample data files is for
Commodore's stock." I glanced at the screen just long enough to see something
that reminded me of the downhill run at Snow Heaven.

"Uh... the program looks useful," I said, "but I really wish you'd close
that particular chart. It hurts my eyes."

"OK, here's something I think you'll find a little more appealing." She
had something on the screen that looked like the planet Earth, and was using
the joystick to zoom in on it.

"What's that?"

"It's EARTHANIM.LHA, File 26000," she said. "A slick little wireframe
animation that lets you rotate the earth around any axis, and lets you zoom in
wherever you'd like. The whole thing is generated in real time. It helps if
you have a fast CPU, by the way," she added with a smile.

"Hey! Speaking of CPUs, did you download CPU112.LHA, File 25905?"

"Sure did. I have it right here." She had it up and running before I
could ask.

\\\ A Chip Off the Old Block "It does the same things that the old CPU
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ program did," she explained as she walked me
through it. "But this one gives you a graphic interface. This is a great tool
for those folks who may be CLI-shy. It shows you at a glance whether you've
got CopyBack or any of your caches turned on. Plus, it lets you move the VBR
-- Vector Base Register -- to fast RAM for some extra speed. It works on all
Amigas, including soft-kicked A3000s. You'll need Workbench 2.04, at least.
Oh, and the handy System Info button lets you know if you've got the fastest
Amiga on the block."

"Speaking of blocks," I said, "have you seen BLOCKS.JPG, File 25895?
It's an incredible rendering of children's blocks -- or at least Bill Graham's
idea of children's blocks -- done with Imagine 3.2. It's so realistic that
you'll have a hard time believing that it isn't a photograph."

"I was wondering when you'd get around to mentioning Bill Graham," said
Anna. "I'm a big fan. But while we're on the subject of children..." She must
have seen me wince. "No, silly," she said, "that's not what I meant. I mean
those blocks, children's blocks. Anyway, I downloaded this really cute game,
LOOPDLOOP.LHA, File 25965. It reminds me a little of Tetris, only this is a
game where you have to join various pieces of 'track' together to form loops.
It looks simple, but the pieces come faster and faster, just like Tetris. It's
really addictive!"

Anna was right. We played round after round, and forgot all about the
tennis game. But that was OK. The day was young, and there was plenty of time
for other sports!

Atari ST & Jaguar RoundTable \\
////////////////////////////////////

by Wally Wilson
"""""""""""""""

_ _
( \ /\ / )
\ \/ \/ /
\ /
\_/\_/elcome to the WallyWorld Computer Olympics. First, you must complete
twenty-five disk-swap wind-sprints. Then race around the hard drive twice,
swim across the data-stream, and then hop a quick ride on the nearest data bus
to the Atari ST RoundTable.

Sometimes this computer fitness kick really bytes.

As you can tell, in my estimation computers and sports don't mix too well
-- a dangerous combination to be sure, but there is hope to be found online.

\\\ By the Numbers I know many folks are avid sports fans when it comes
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ to collecting things, but like myself, they frequently
find themselves at a loss when it comes time to account for their treasures.
We can help!

For starters, the Bells & Whistles Videotape database, File 19152
VIDEO.LZH is a great way to keep track of those pesky, migrating videotapes.
Not quite the thrill of tape-branding, but a challenging sport nonetheless.

On the finer side, in cuisine collecting -- a two-pronged sport -- you
can not only gather great recipes, but also recreate your collection in
real-life 3D. All it takes is the aid of an oven or stove-top type appliance.
This is true-life smell-o-vision, and provides temporary satisfaction for the
hungry monster within. To start your collection, check out the Recipe Box by
our very own Anthony Watson, File 32533 RECIPE45.LZH. This, to me, is the most
rewarding sport of them all.

Some folks make great sport of buying numbers at the local convenience
store in preparation for becoming filthy rich. In fact, some people have
recently been stockpiling numbers, and I hear the supply is growing short. To
gain some advantage, take a look at Lucky LOTTO Numbers v4.2 in File 32603
LCKYLT42.ZIP. I'm told this program only generates 'lucky' numbers. It also
has a database for keeping track of your LOTTO sporting and includes features
to report on State lottery statistics. In sports terms, this is to LOTTO what
a glove is to baseball.

Speaking of baseball, or even football for that matter, the sport of
card-collecting has long been hindered by the chaos that the universe inflicts
on all such activities: no way to keep track of all this stuff.

Enter Card Master. (No, not Master Card. Card Master.) This Shareware
program (File 20492 CARDMAST.LZH) is a complete sports trading card database
and will keep track of all your cards. With this little beauty you can print
special reports, keep track of hockey cards, baseball cards, or even your
favorite team square-dancing cards. The prospects are astronomically in your
favor.

\\\ A Star is Born Let us also not forget the very intense, yet utterly
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ silent, sport of star-gazing (which is similar to
day-dreaming, but infinitely more complicated for the novice). Your eyes can
run countless laps across the heavens searching for that one star you need
upon which to make your wish (for those lucky numbers).

OK, where is that dog star...? Well, save some eye-strain and add these
little gems to your sports equipment arsenal.

The Amateur Astronomer's Guide to the Night Sky, by M. Kudlowski is a
sweet little program that allows you to specify date and time so you may view
the night sky for tonight, or even preview it for tomorrow. It provides
information on some 1300 stars, and even shows constellations. You can find
this in the Atari ST RoundTable Library, in File 20366 STARGIDE.ARC.

Yet another starry-eyed program to consider is Star 2000, File 26310
STAR_2K.LZH. Mapped within this rather complex but very well-written utility
(the Freeware offering of Debonair Software's Star Base v1.21) are extensive
databases of planets, stars, and deep sky objects. You can draw the night sky,
or any section of the same, or plot the apparent motion of planets and stars.
Simply clicking on an object will tell you its name and location. A very nice
program indeed.

Falcon users will also want to check out Voyager, File 36312
VYGER31A.ZIP. It offers all manner of great astronomical information with a
very slick user interface.

\\\ Bowling For Dollars Now that I've bowled you over with all these
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ great offerings, let me unload one more.

Have you ever had to keep score as your friends bowled in the leagues?
Then do all the statistics, handicaps (separate for the men and women), and
actually keep a running count on the year's progress? Most bowlers don't even
realize that their team secretary is running a marathon each night trying to
keep up with this task. If they did, they'd suggest checking out the Bowling
League Secretary, File 17821 BOWL501.LZH. Keep track of roving subs, different
handicaps, weekly, monthly, and yearly stats, and more. And still have time
for pizza.

As you can see, the more subtle sports are all conveniently linked to
your computer. So when you're out there looking for sports supporters, you can
always turn to us in the Atari ST RoundTable -- for training, rehabilitation,
and computer sports medicine (like lost cluster-hunting, and computer re-boot
camp).

But, please remember that you and your computer should stretch before and
after every event. We wouldn't want you to pull anything.

Apple II RoundTable \\
////////////////////////////////////

by Greg Schreurs
`````````````````
_ _
( \ / )
\ \/ /
\ /
/ /
(_/our Apple II has been sitting there doing almost nothing nearly all
summer. You're ready to pull your hair out; you're at your wits' end. Your
kids have joined Little League baseball and enlisted in the neighborhood
soccer club. You have been helping the coach with the teams. So, how DO you
get the computer out of the house and involved in sports?
Start with the A2 RoundTables. This month, A2 takes a look at involving
your computer in Sports -- from keeping statistics to engaging in computer
games centered around common sporting events.
Your Apple CAN help polish these budding teams into summer champions.
\\\ Getting Organized Here's what some of our members have been doing,
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ and how they've been doing it. You can take notes if
you like.
Dave Ciotti (BINARY.BEAR) talks about organizing a boy's basketball
league:
"I am using AppleWorks and a bevy of Apple IIs to organize the Hamilton
Little Lads Basketball program in New Jersey. Every winter about 450 boys play
a 14 game season including registration, tryouts, draft, regular season, and
playoffs. The age of the boys ranges from 6 to 17 and is split into 4
divisions. Every summer about 150 boys play a 10-game season outdoors.
"All the paperwork for this league -- Age charts, Registration forms,
Information forms, Consent forms, Team Rosters, Division Schedules, and Phone
lists -- is done with the Apple II computer."
Mark Kline (M.KLINE1) puts the Apple II on ice:
"I coach a kid's hockey team and have used my Apple II to keep track of
the timings that we do periodically during the season to help the kids note
their improvement in skating speed. Using a spreadsheet or database to keep
track of and sort these numbers makes things much easier.
"Something I've always wanted to do, but never got around to, is using
photogates interfaced to the computer to take care of the timing of the
sprints that the kids do. There would be one light beam where they start and
one at the 'finish line'."
Tony Ward (A2.TONY) is a fan of Nibble magazine's NFL Line program (by
Rudy Guy):
"Believe it or not, I still use this program to track the NFL season. I
have modified it somewhat to allow for the extended schedule (bye weeks) and
teams which have moved. I don't put too much weight into the predictions, but
it makes a nice database for the season's results."
\\\ A Visit to the Library You don't need to go far to find programs like
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ these for all sorts of sports applications. Only
as far as your modem and the A2 Library, in fact. To help you get started,
we've compiled a few suggestions. Well, maybe more than a few.
Pat Kern (PATZ.PIX) recommends the following clipart files from our
Library for use with your sports publications or newsletters:
off!
(___)(__)ere's a handy list of all the Software Library files mentioned in the
August 1995 issue of LiveWire. If GEnie is unable to locate a certain file
when you try to download it, it is possible that the file has been updated
since the article was written. Try a SEARCH of that Library using terms which
describe the file. That should locate the latest entry. If all else fails, ask
the RoundTable sysops for help -- that's what they're there for!
GEnie's Libraries are almost always located on Menu Option 3 on the main
RoundTable page. Files can be downloaded either by number or name from Menu
Option 6 inside any Library.
Remember that uploads to GEnie are free during non-prime time. If you
have something to share, upload it for other GEnie members!
\\\ August File Finder If you're reading a multimedia edition of LiveWire,
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ remember to look for the July File Finder, a text
file named LW9508FF.TXT, in the directory on your system where you stored this
issue. The File Finder is built into the text edition; check the contents page
to locate it.
Use LiveWire's File Finder each month as a memory jogger to help recall
files mentioned in that issue you want to add to your personal collection. You
can even put the File Finder on paper if you have a printer, and make notes on
it as you go through LiveWire. As its name indicates, you'll find all the
information you need to find a file online: the name of the LiveWire article
in which it was mentioned, the keyword for the RoundTable Library it's stored
in for direct online navigation, the number and name of every file mentioned
in that issue, and occasional remarks with pertinent details. Just be sure you
read each file's long description online to be certain your system has the
required elements to run everything you download.
\\\ Food & Wine RoundTable Cookie-Lady, manager of GEnie's Food & Wine
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ RoundTable, has a tasty idea for these Hot Summer
Nights. Here's what she suggests:
Strawberry desserts are perfect for summer months. Growing up, we always
had strawberries in the garden -- big ones, that always reminded me of
pillows. I used to love to go into the garden to pick them, although I think
more made it into my mouth than into the house. Here's one of my favorite
recipes; it's delicious
using fresh or frozen strawberries.
Strawberry Charlotte Dessert
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
2 packages (10 ounces) frozen strawberries, sliced
2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
3/4 cup sugar, divided
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 eggs, separated
1/2 cup water
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
8 ladyfingers
1 cup heavy cream, whipped
Mix thoroughly the gelatin, 1/4 cup of the sugar, and the salt in the top
of a double boiler. Beat egg yolks and water together. Add to gelatin mixture.
Add 1 package of the frozen sliced strawberries. Cook over boiling water,
stirring constantly until gelatin is dissolved and strawberries thawed, about
8 minutes. Remove from heat and add remaining package of strawberries, lemon
juice and rind. Stir until berries are thawed. Chill in refrigerator or bowl
of ice and water, stirring occasionally, until the mixture mounds when dropped
from a spoon. Split ladyfingers in half and stand around edge of an 8-inch
springform pan. Beat egg whites until stiff. Beat in remaining 1/2 cup sugar.
Fold in gelatin mixture. Fold in whipped cream. Turn into pan and chill until
firm. Remove from pan and garnish with additional whipped cream and
strawberries.
Serves 10-12
Last month's NetSearch inadvertently published the wrong page number for
the Food and Wine RoundTable on GEnie Page 1150. Find more great recipes there
