EARTHRISE - Part 1

INTRODUCTION
EARTHRISE, by Matt Gruson, is a delightful adventure in which you're cast as a Mining Guild Trouble Shooter sent on a mission to the asteroid Solus. This ore-rich satellite was being towed toward Earth when it suddenly went out of control, and all signs of human life disappeared. You must discover what went wrong on Solus, and fix its huge engines before the asteroid impacts with Earth -- EARTHRISE!

Commands that you are to enter appear in CAPITAL LETTERS. Also, a running total of game points appears in parenthesis after each important command.

ON THE SHUTTLE
As the game opens, you've just arrived by shuttle in Solus's orbit, and have been awakened by the alarm. You will rise from the cryofreeze unit and stand by it. LOOK ROOM. Move to the ladder and press the up-arrow to climb the ladder to the bridge. Walk to the green bottle at the upper right of the screen. TAKE BOTTLE. (15) Go back to the ladder and climb down.

Go right through the door and right again. Walk to the valve on the oxygen tank (at the end of the leftmost front tank). FILL BOTTLE. (23) Return to the bridge by exiting left, then left, and back up the ladder. Walk to the back wall. CALL GUILD. (26) Walk to the couch. LIE ON COUCH. LOOK PANEL. A screen will pop up with the controls for the pod bay door and the automated navigation system. PUSH OPEN. (33) The pod bay doors open.

GET UP. Exit to the right through the door. Walk to the panel at the left of the airlock and LOOK PANEL. PUSH BUTTON TO OPEN CABINET. Walk to the open cabinet, TAKE HELMET, (48) and WEAR HELMET. Exit right to the pod bay. Walk to the steps by the pod door and press the up-arrow key to enter the pod. Walk to the left until you're by pilot seat. SIT. PUSH FLIGHT. (63) The pod will rise and come to rest on the surface of Solus. GET UP. Exit the pod via the steps. Exit the screen to the right. SAVE GAME.

EARTHRISE - Part 2

SOLUS (HUBS OF INACTIVITY)
Climb down the ladder. LOOK AT WATCH to check your oxygen level. Do this from time to time when going through the base. Always check above every airlock; a green light indicates there is oxygen and you can remove your helmet to conserve the oxygen in the bottle. A red light above a door means that you must wear your helmet before entering. Exit right through door. REMOVE HELMET. LOOK DESK. LOOK INTERCOM. PUSH BLACK BUTTON. (68) The security door at the bottom of the screen will open. Exit through this door. Walk to the console in the room's center. LOOK CONSOLE. PUSH PERSONNEL. (74) Walk right to the box. LOOK BOX. TAKE BADGE. (89)

Exit to the bottom of this screen, and walk right for two screens. You will come to a hub. (I found this an ideal place to map. Pause the game with the "F4" function key, grab a pen, and outline the shape of the hub.) LOOK ROOM. LOOK PLAQUES. LOOK LIGHTS. (These commands will help label your map.) Again, make note of the airlocks that have red lights, for you will need to wear your helmet before entering them. I will use the eight compass directions from this room.

Go through the southeast door to the research lab. Go right twice through the tunnel. Omigosh! The first victim! LOOK BODY. LOOK GLASS. LOOK NOTE. (You may want to take notes yourself here!) Walk right to the next screen. Stand in front of the table. LOOK TABLE. READ NOTES. (99) Walk to the center filing cabinet on the rear wall. OPEN FILING CABINET. (109) Write the name of the database and the names for the aliens. Walk left to the next screen and exit the top of the screen through the door. Walk left twice through the tunnel and back to the hub.

Go through the door to the northeast to the security office. Go right two screens through the tunnel. LOOK ROOM. Walk to the chair. SIT. LOOK AT TERMINAL. A screen will appear, asking for the name of the database. BIOMED. The next screen will ask for the search string. Type the aliens' names, and note the differences in each creature, especially any weaknesses cited. TYMAK. BRELT. KARIK. GLITTEN. ZELD. QUIT. QUIT. (124) GET UP. Exit left through the door, and go left twice through tunnel to the hub. Go southwest from the hub to the elevator and SAVE GAME.

SOLUS (HOME, SWEET HOME!)
Walk to the control panel in the right front part of the elevator. PUSH DOWN. Exit the elevator to the hub of Level 2. (Again, another good place to map!) LOOK ROOM. LOOK PLAQUES. LOOK LIGHTS. Go through the northeast door and right twice through the tunnel. LOOK ROOM. LOOK BENCH. TAKE MAGNET. (139) Exit the gym and go left twice through the tunnel to the hub.

Go through the northwest door and left twice through the tunnel to the mess hall. Walk to the right side of the table. LOOK TABLE. TAKE CAKE. (144) EAT CAKE. (149) TAKE CAKE. Walk through either rear door to the kitchen. LOOK TABLE. TAKE KNIFE. (164) Walk to the right of the rear door with the horizontal stripe. PUSH BUTTON. Walk through the door to the pantry. LOOK ROOM. Walk to the shelf at the right side of the screen. LOOK SHELF. TAKE CYLINDER. (179) Exit the pantry through the kitchen and go back to the mess hall. Exit through the door to the right, and right twice through the tunnel.

Oops! A red light! WEAR HELMET before entering the last door. Go left through the tunnel and through the door to the living quarters. REMOVE HELMET. You find yourself in a long hallway. Walk right three times through the tunnel until you come to the barricade. LOOK BARRICADE. Time to search the living quarters for survivors and more clues.

Walk left to the next screen and you will see three doors. Walk to the middle door, stand just to the right of it, and PUSH BUTTON. (Some of these doors and buttons require a bit of maneuvering to get in exactly the right place for the button to work; the doors I skipped are locked.) Enter the room and walk to the dresser. LOOK DRESSER. OPEN BOX. TAKE GUN. (194) Exit the room back to the hall. Go left to the next door and PUSH BUTTON. Enter the room and walk to the dresser. LOOK DRESSER. TAKE HAMMER. (209) Exit the room to the hall. Go left to the first door on the far wall. PUSH BUTTON. Enter the room and walk to the dresser. LOOK DRESSER. TAKE HACKSAW. (224) Exit the room and walk to the second door on the near wall. PUSH BUTTON. Enter the room and LOOK FLOOR. TAKE SOCK. (239) Exit the room and walk left to the next screen. Go to the door on the far wall. PUSH BUTTON, and enter the room. Walk to the bed and LOOK BED. TAKE COMB. (254) (By the way, I never found a use for the gun, comb, or sock.) Exit the room and WEAR HELMET. Go right three times through the tunnel and back to the hub. SAVE GAME.

EARTHRISE - Part 3

SOLUS (SCRATCHING THE SURFACE)
Go through the south door and right twice through the tunnel to the cryofreeze chamber. Walk to the door on the far wall, and PUSH BUTTON. Enter the room and walk to the tank with the oxygen valve. FILL BOTTLE. Exit the room back to the chamber and WEAR HELMET.

Exit through the south door and climb the ladder to the surface. Walk right one screen and up one screen. LOOK AT SKYLIGHT. BREAK SKYLIGHT WITH HAMMER. (274) Walk down two screens and enter the narrow passage on the bottom of the screen. LOOK ROOM. Walk to the elevator platform and PUSH BUTTON. LOOK AT DRUM. Exit the room and walk one screen left, one screen down, and one screen left. You will see a small passage at the bottom of the screen.

Go through this passage and walk very carefully around the hole to the ladder. Climb down the ladder, but stop before you get to the bottom. LOOK ROOM. LOOK BLOB. Hmm, you can't do anything now, so climb the ladder again, walk around the hole, and exit the room. Walk up one screen. LOOK. LOOK FORCE FIELD. You'll have to find that control!

Walk up one screen to the tower. Walk to the box on the left tower leg. LOOK BOX. LOOK LOCK. Go to the ladder and climb up. Walk to the panel on the right. LOOK STATUS PANEL. PUSH OPEN. Walk to the access panel on the left. LOOK ACCESS PANEL. LOOK AT SCREW. A look at your inventory shows nothing useful at this point.

Climb down the ladder to the surface. Exit the ladder, walk two screens down, and one screen right. Climb down the ladder. LOOK AT LADDER once you are on the floor. CUT CHAIN WITH HACKSAW. (281) TAKE LADDER. (296) Enter the cryofreeze room and REMOVE HELMET. Refill the oxygen bottle by entering the door to the tank room. Stand by the oxygen valve and FILL BOTTLE. Return to the chamber, exit through the north door, and go left two screens to the hub. SAVE GAME.

SOLUS (MONSTER MASH)
Now comes the fun! Go through the southwest door to the elevator. PUSH UP. Exit to the hub on first the level. Go through the east door, walk right, bypass the first door, and go two more screens right to the observatory. LOOK ROOM. LOOK DESK. TAKE FIELD GLASSES. (311) Exit through the door to the left and walk two screens back to the door on the near wall.

(Just a note here: I hope you haven't had to consult the walkthru up to this point, and have had a chance to die one of Matt's many colorful deaths in this game. Getting nailed by the spider when it's alive is one of my favorites!)

Go through the door and walk two screens right. Another red light! WEAR HELMET. Walk through the door to the garden. What a mess, huh? LOOK ROOM. LOOK LIGHTS. Walk one screen right to the door. LOOK DOOR. LOOK VINE. CUT VINE WITH KNIFE. (319) PUSH BUTTON. Enter the toolshed through the door. LOOK SHELF. TAKE LAMP. (334) Exit the room to the left and walk two screens left to the tunnel. REMOVE HELMET.

Walk left two screens to the first door, and left two more screens to the hub. Enter the northeast doorway again, and go right twice through the tunnel to the security room. Walk to the glass. LOOK AT INNER OFFICE. READ BOARD WITH FIELD GLASSES. (339) The combination might be random for different games, so make a note of it. Walk to the inner office door. LOOK DOOR. LOOK GLASS. LOOK LOCK. Hmm. You don't seem to have the right equipment for the force field yet!

Exit the room to the left and go back through tunnel to the hub. Go through the west door and left two screens to the communication room. LOOK ROOM. Exit to the left. WEAR HELMET. Climb the ladder to the surface. Walk to the box on the tower's left leg. TURN DIAL RIGHT 3. TURN DIAL LEFT 1. TURN DIAL RIGHT 6. TURN DIAL LEFT 4. (346) OPEN BOX. (353) LOOK IN BOX. Walk down two screens to the passage, go south through passage, around the hole and down the ladder. It's time to microwave the blob! Stop just short of the bottom of the ladder and wait until the blob is right below you. TURN ON LAMP. SHINE LAMP ON BLOB. (373)

Climb down and walk to the door between the light poles on the far wall. PUSH BUTTON. Walk to the shelf, LOOK SHELF, TAKE WIRE CUTTERS (388), and TAKE DRILL. (403) Exit back to the blob room and walk through the door to the right. REMOVE HELMET.

Walk right three screens to the hub and SAVE GAME. Go through the south door and right two screens to the cryogenic chamber. Go through the door to the tank room. FILL BOTTLE. Exit the room to the chamber, go back to the hub via the north door, and left twice through the tunnel.

Go through the southwest door to the elevator and PUSH UP. Exit the elevator, go through the northeast door, and through the tunnel to the security room. Third time's the charm! Walk to the inner office door. SHOOT DOOR WITH DRILL. (406) SHOOT PANEL WITH DRILL THROUGH HOLE. (418) Exit left through the tunnel twice, then go left to the hub.

Go through the southeast door and right two screens to the research lab. Walk one screen right to the storage cabinet. OPEN STORAGE CABINET. LOOK IN CABINET. TAKE JAR. (433) LOOK AT BEE. Exit left to the door, and go left twice to the hub. PUT BEE IN CYLINDER. WEAR HELMET.

Go through the south door and right one screen. Stop short of the creature and LOOK AT CREATURE. SHOOT CREATURE WITH DRILL. (453) Continue right through the next door. PUT ERIC IN JAR. REMOVE HELMET. Walk through the door and stop when you enter the next room. RELEASE ERIC. (473) SAVE GAME. Walk left one screen and stop at the first door. PUSH BUTTON. Enter the room and walk to the storage cabinet behind the desk. OPEN CABINET. LOOK IN CABINET. TAKE TORCH. (488) Exit the room through the door, and go right twice to the main tunnel. WEAR HELMET. PUT ERIC IN CYLINDER. Walk left through the door and left twice to the hub. PUT ERIC IN JAR. REMOVE HELMET. Go through the southeast door again, right twice through tunnel, and into the research lab. Go right one screen to the storage cabinet. PUT JAR IN STORAGE CABINET. (498) CLOSE STORAGE CABINET. Walk left one screen, through the door, and left two screens to the hub.

Go through the west door and left two screens through the tunnel to the communications center. Go through the left door. WEAR HELMET. Climb the ladder, exit it at ground level, and walk down one screen. Walk to the pile of rocks. LOOK ROCKS. TAKE ROCK. (508) Walk to the suit. LOOK SUIT. TAKE SCREWDRIVER. (523) Walk up one screen and climb the ladder to the platform. Walk left to the access panel. REMOVE SCREW WITH SCREWDRIVER. (533) Walk right to the status panel. PUSH OPEN. (538) Climb down the ladder to the surface. Walk left to the box. CUT WIRE. A screen will appear asking if you "really want to do this?" YES. (543)

Walk back to the ladder and climb up to the platform. Exit left to the access panel. LOOK IN ACCESS PANEL. TAKE PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER. (558) Climb down the ladder through the vertical airlock to the locker room. REMOVE HELMET. Walk right through the door and right again three times to the hub. SAVE GAME.

Go through the northwest door. LOOK AT SUIT. TURN ON MAGNET. Walk one screen left. Poor Porky! (578) Walk through the left door. REMOVE HELMET. LOOK ROOM. Walk left one screen and down two screens. A door will open in the right wall as you approach. Go through it to the control room. LOOK ROOM. Walk to the access panel. OPEN ACCESS PANEL. (588) LOOK ACCESS PANEL. TAKE CABLE. (603) Exit left through the door.

Hey! Who turned off the scenery? Go up two screens and right one screen to the door. WEAR HELMET. Walk right two screens to the hub. REMOVE HELMET. Enter the southwest door to the elevator. PUSH DOWN. Exit to the hub. WEAR HELMET. SAVE GAME.

Walk one screen right and stop just short of the crack. PUT LADDER ON CRACK. (613) Walk across the crack to the right door and enter the door to the power plant. REMOVE HELMET. LOOK ROOM. Walk to the ladder and climb it. Walk right. LOOK. TAKE WRENCH. (628) Walk back to the ladder and climb down. Walk to the door on the far wall. PUSH BUTTON. Walk through the door and two screens left through the tunnel.

Walk to the section of broken cable. LOOK AT CABLE. FIX CABLE WITH TORCH. (658) Walk right through the tunnel back to the power plant. WEAR HELMET. Exit through the left door, go across the ladder, and back to the hub. Go through the east door and go right one screen. Walk to the section of broken wall. LOOK AT WALL. LOOK AT PIPE. LOOK AT VALVE. Walk right one screen. LOOK AT CREATURE. Oops! You can't get past this "friendly" creature without some help! Walk left back to the valve. OPEN VALVE WITH WRENCH. (678) Walk right again and the last of the bad guys has bit the Solus dust!

Walk right through the door to the engine room. REMOVE HELMET. Walk to the door on the right and enter the computer control room. LOOK. LOOK BOX. STRIP WIRE. REPLACE LINK WITH CABLE. (708) Exit left to the engine room and walk into the control island in the center of the room. LOOK. Walk to the screens on the right half of the island. LOOK SCREENS. Walk to the left portion of the island. LOOK PANEL. LOOK BUTTON. PUSH BUTTON (748). Whew! SAVE GAME.

EARTHRISE - Part 4

HOMEWARD BOUND
WEAR HELMET. Exit through the left door and go left three screens to the hub. REMOVE HELMET. It might be a good idea to refill the oxygen bottle now, "just in case." Go through the south door and go right two screens to the cryofreeze chamber. Enter the oxygen tank room and FILL BOTTLE. Exit to the chamber, and go through the north door to the tunnel. Walk left two screens to the hub

Enter the southwest door to the elevator. PUSH UP. Go through the north door and go left three screens to the security checkpoint. Notice the red light! WEAR HELMET.

Walk through the north door and go to the ladder. Climb the ladder to the surface and go one screen left. Walk to the left side of the pod near the steps. _Do not_ enter the pod yet! LOOK POD. Another slime? Argh! Luckily, you have its lunch! THROW CAKE AT SLIME. (768) Climb the steps to the pod and walk to the pilot's seat. SIT. LOOK PANEL. PUSH RETURN. The pod ascends and takes you back to the shuttle. GET UP.

Exit the pod, then exit the room through the left door. REMOVE HELMET, walk to the cabinet, and PUT HELMET IN CABINET. (773) Walk to the control panel and PUSH CABINET CLOSE. Walk left to the bridge. PUT BOTTLE ON RACK. (778) Walk left to the communications panel and CALL GUILD. (783) Walk to the couch. LIE ON COUCH. PUSH CLOSE. PUSH RETURN. (790) GET UP.

Walk to the ladder and climb down. Walk to the cryofreeze unit and LIE DOWN. (800) The game takes over from this point, and congratulates you for a perfect score!

There are many commands I've omitted here for the sake of space, and there is so much more to see and experience in this game. For me, the fun of EARTHRISE is in reading the game's responses and chasing down the many red herrings Matt put into the game. I especially enjoyed the "creative" ways the hero could "die" throughout the game. I tried every kind of death possible just to see how I would die, and what the game would say! (Of course, I recommend you save your game before trying to die.)
