Ma Bell has her own language when it comes to the phone business.
The garages where the trucks & installing equipment are kept around here are
in New Village on Rt. 57, and in Netcong right around where Routes 46 and 80
meet. The CO (Central Office) is in Washington on Washington Ave just before
you get into town if coming from Phillipsburg direction. The garages have a
four number gate lock and a three digit door lock. If you can find out the
four digit gate lock combination, the door lock is the first three digits of
the gate's combo. The CO however is key locked with cameras and alarms, so
forget about getting in there, besides, the garages carry everything the
young phreaker could want (ie. handsets, tape, switches, and other tools.)
Now they are starting to install CEVs at places where many lines, especially
ISDN lines, are going to. Two I know of are outside the Garage in New
Village and about 30 off the highway in front of the new Warren County
Community College. They are about 3ft. by 3ft. and stick about one and a
half feet above the ground. These are equipped with a number pad lock. I'm
not sure where the combos are kept or how many digits they are. CEV's are
about 4ft wide by 6ft. long and are really a little room underground. They
have tile floors, and are kept very clean. If you can get into one of these,
the possibilites are endless.
Payphones. Of course every phreak has their vision of the greatest
pay phone scam. One of them is probably to have a set of keys that opens
them. Well you can forget about that unless you are good friends with one of
the coin collectors and can get him drunk enough to be able to steal his keys,
or want to break into the headquarters in Newark. That's where all of the
coin collectors are from. Also keep in mind, Ma Bell likes to get all of her
money. Security will come out to a phone the day a coin collector is going
to be there and put some marked coins in the return slot. They had better be
there when the coin collector cashes out at the end of the night. Security
watches over these phones until the coin collector has emptied it. So if your
planning to do something to one of the pay phones, check the return slot
first, and if there's money in it, leave the phone alone. You never know if
someone left it there, or if it's security checking in for Ma Bell.
When you go out and tap into phone lines, first dial 958 to find out
the number you're hooked up to. That way you know your not charging your
calls to yourself or someone you know. Also another idea in theory right now
is that there's a certain ordered recurring pair that make the phone lines
connect. But if you take and rearrange one of the pair to another pair.
(ie. take a red from one line and a green from another line to make your
pair.) The phone company has nothing to trace you to. The pair is unknown to
the computer, so no number can be traced to. However they can still trace to
what box your hooked up to so this just gives you a little extra time to get
lost if you think you're being traced.
Looking proffessional is the main key in getting the information and
access you want. If you look and act proffessional you can get into just
about any store's or mall's phone system, including pay phone lines. Just
about all Bell employees wear: A plain color hanes pocket T, jeans - even
better if they're fading in the thighs, work boots, a belt, a pair of
sunglasses a pen & pencil in the pocket of your shirt, possibly a pack of
cigarettes, a clipboard or folder with some papers in it, and a pouch with a
pair of sciccors & a pocket knife on the belt. Also, although harder to
attain, a handset on your jean loop, a hard hat, & a tool belt with a bunch
of tools(doesn't matter what they are) looks very proffessional. If you act
proffessional and just be friendly, almost any store or mall will let you
into their phone system. They will also leave you alone after they show you
where it is, afterall they have a job to do too.
