USS EAGLE
by Paul Dimitriadis
The reflection of the sun made the silver hull of the newly
commisioned NCC-1399-B, USS Eagle, look gold. It's new captain, Robert
Bant, walked out of the turbolift and sat in his golden brown chair. He
looked out in front of him. A vulcan ensign sat at Ops, a human at
Comm. His first officer was missing, they were intercepting the USS
Cabot where she was transferring from. He pointed slightly at the
human. "Ensign Masterson, at what time will we rendezvous with the
Cabot?"
The ensign looked at his panel and replied, "At present course
and speed, four hours and thirteen minutes."
"Increase to Warp 7," the captain said. The ensign pressed a
few buttons on his panel, and the ship surged forward. Behind him, at
tactical, was his second officer, an Ethurian female. Ethurians were
said to be second only to Zackdorns in strategic thinking, but had great
physical strength. He turned to her and said, "Lt. Santir, you have the
bridge, I'll be in my readyroom if you need me." As he stood, the tall
woman went to take his place. The doors to his readyroom slid open, and
he looked at the model of the ship that was within. It had five
nacelles, a new feature of the Explorer class ships..It looked kind of
odd to the captain, but it was supposed to work. He sat back in his
chair and pressed a button, which responded with a small electronic
noise. "Captain's Log- Stardate 45321.4; This is my first log entry as
Captain Robert Bant. The ship looks impressive, and I'll look forward to
our first mission. I'm sure my crew will be great. We are currently
getting ready to rendezvous with the Cabot, where my first officer will
come aboard. End." The computer signalled the end of the log entry
with it's electronic beep. The captain rubbed his head, remembering
that only around a year ago, he was first officer of the USS
Melbourne. He left the ship right before it went to engage the Borg.
Some of his dark, almost black, brown hair fell over his eyes. I need
to visit the barber, he thought. He looked around, then, almost
interuppting him, the electronic sound of the communicator activated.
He lightly tapped it.
"Sir, we have reached the Cabot, and they are ready to beam over
Commander Lantasa whenever you are."
"Thank you Lt., I'll be waiting in Transporter room 5." He
stepped into the Turbolift in his readyroom, and told the computer his
destination. After a few long seconds, the doors opened to reveal the
transporters. "Mister Colm, beam Commander Lantasa over." The Lt.
complied with a nod, accompanied by the swift movement of his fingers
over the panel. On one of the pads, a shimmer of energy appeared, then
a humanoid became visible. The first noticable thing about her was her
long blue hair that had a strange beauty. Her silver eyes were also
immediatly noticable. The Commander stepped off the pad and extended a
hand. The captain grasped it.
"Captain Bant, I presume," she said with a warm smile.
"The captain returned the smile, "And you must be Commander
Lantasa." She nodded as he continued, "you're Ruellian aren't you?"
She looked slightly suprised, as not many Ruellians had joined
Starfleet, but she answered, "Half-Ruellian. My mother was a Sonain.
These," she continued, pointing to her eyes, "are from her."
"Well, I'm sure I will find it a pleasure serving with you."
"As Will I,"
They walked towards the Turbolift, and entered. "Bridge," the
captain said. In a few moments, the doors opened. Lt. Santir stood,
and returned to her post. The captain and his new first officer sat in
their seats. "Ensign Masterson, set course for the Trelna Zena system,
Warp 6," he said, then turning to Commander Lantasa, "We're transporting
Medical supplies to a space station.. It will take some time to get
there, so would you like a tour?"
"I'd love one," she said.
"I'd love one," again she smiled. She started walking toward
the turnolift, followed by the captain. As the doors closed behind
them, the computer beckoned for a destination.
"Holodeck 1" the captain said. Soon, the doors opened. Ahead a
few feet, the Holodecks doors were closed. Captain Bant went to the
panel, and pressed a few buttons. "This is one of my favorite
scienarios," he said. The doors opened, revealing the bridge of a
starship.
On of the holographic officers said, "We are recieving a
transmission from the frieghter, Kobyashi Maru. They have strayed off
course and have lost power in the Romulan Neutral Zone."
Lantasa raised an eyebrow as she said, "The Kobyashi Maru? The
no-win situation from the Academy?"
Bant nodded, "I've always wanted to solve an impossible problem.
Helmsman, set course for the ship and intercept." Moments later, on the
viewscreen, shimmering Romulan Warbirds came into view.
"Sir, Romulan Warbirds uncloaking and are surrounding us," said
the Holo-officer. Less than a split second later, the viewscreen was
replaced by a Romulan officer.
"Captain Bant. We advise you to power down and let us board.
We may perhaps let you live if you do so. If you do not, you will be
destroyed." The image flickered out, and the captain's face showed a
flash of recognition.
"Bridge to Engineering, I need a slight change in the Warp
Engines. Change the Matter/Antimatter ratio to 1:1.281."
"But sir.."
"Just do it! Helmsman, prepare to go Warp 1, straight towards
the head Romulan Warbird."
"Sir..the change is finished..but we'll never survive."
"Warp 1, now!" The captain winced as on the viewscreen, the ship
burst forward suddenly. The head Romulan Warbird was split apart in the
wormhole. The peices flew around, and the ship flew into the gap in the
fabric of space.
"Sir, we've lost our starboard nacelle!"
"Sir, we'll have to dump the antimatter if we'll have any chance
of surviving."
"Do it!"
"Widespread systems failure!"
Suddenly, an explosion lit up the holodeck. When the captain
could see, it showed a bare holodeck grid. A voice in the back said,
"You did better than I did."
"I did better than I did as well, on my first try all I did was
damage a ship. Would you care to see Sickbay," he asked.
"I'd be delighted," she answered as they walked out. Later, in
sickbay, Chief Medical Officer Clampet was looking over some files.
Captain Bant and Commander Lantasa walked in.
"Dr. Clampet, I'd like you to meet Commander Lantasa."
The young doctor shook her hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you."
Suddenly the captain's communicator made a loud beep. As he
tapped it, Lt. Santir's voice came through loudly, "Captain, this is an
emergancy, please come to the bridge."
The captain and his first officer walked quickly out of sickbay,
momentarily arriving on the bridge. "What's wrong?" he asked.
"Sir, we're receiving a distress call from the Neutral Zone," as
visions of a real Kobyashi Maru flashed through his mind, the Lt.
continued, "It's from a Romulan ship..they're being attacked by the
Borg! We're only a few minutes travel at Warp 8, the Space station is at
the edge of the Neutral Zone."
"Adjust course and speed," he said reluctantly, fearing deep
down in his mind that it would be a trick. "Red Alert."
* * *
A light year away, the Romulan commander looked at one of his
officers. "Did you send the distress call to Romulus, Centurion Pakek?"
The centurion turned his chair, saying, "Yes sir, but I believe
the coding was not in effect. Anyone could have intercepted it."
"Very well, how long can we remain undetectable to the Borg?"
"Our best estimates are that they will adapt to our cloaking
device within the hour."
The Romulan commander looked out at the large cubic ship on the
screen. It was already repairing the damage the Warbird's disruptor
weapon did, adapting quickly as well. "Prepare to set self-destruct
sequence on my order." He was about to give it, when Pakek interuppted
him.
"Sir, we are receiving a transmission."
"On main viewer."
The completely human face of Captain Robert Bant stared at the
Romulans and said, "We have intercepted your distress call. We're
coming to help. This is the USS Eagle, a Federation ship. I repeat, we
are coming to help. We will be there in a matter of minutes.
"Did they recieve that Lt. Santir?" Captain Bant asked.
"We don't know," she paused for a second, then she said, "We are
now entering the Neutral Zone," followed momentarily by, "We are being
scanned...twice."
"On screen!"
As the screen switched on, a huge cube, the ship characteristic
of the Borg, was floating motionless in space. Suddenly, it fired...but
not on the Eagle. A Romulan Warbird came into view. A tractor beam
held it, and the Borg's cutting beam sliced it's way into the hull. A
large piece of metal went towards the cube. Lt. Santir suddenly said,
"Sir, we're recieving a hail from the Romulans."
"On screen," Commander Lantasa answered.
An injured Romulan Commander looked at them, "USS Eagle. This
is the Sentrip. They have stolen part of our hull. We suspect that
they will shortly have full cloaking capabilities."
"Commander, do you have the capability to beam onto the Borg
ship? A friend of mine, Commander Shelby, is a Borg expert. She told me
recently on Earth that the Borg didn't notice her when she went onboard.
Maybe we can find someway to destroy either the ship, or at least the
cloaking device." The Romulan Commander nodded, as a Borg suddenly
appeared on the Eagle's bridge. It's arm module started moving, and the
Borg walked towards the Science station. A green light came out of the
device, in an attempt to access the computers. Lt. Santir pulled out
her phaser and fired at the Borg. It fell to the ground, lifeless.
Another Borg appeared, and started taking parts out of his fallen
crewman. Captain Bant tapped his communicator and said, "Bant to
Transporter room. Lock on to my signal and beam directly to Sickbay. 2
second delay. Now!" He threw his communicator at the fallen Borg, just
as one peice was removed. The cybernetic form shimmered and vanished.
The other Borg apparently didn't notice, as it went back to the
computer. Soon it stood still, and vanished.
"Captain, we've got a Borg in Sickbay...It appears dead sir."
was Dr. Clampet's communication.
"I know, I sent it to you. We're giving you a chance to study
it." He paused, looking at the viewscreen, which was still on the
Romulan Commander. "Are you ready to beam over?" The Romulan Commander
nodded. "Commander Lantasa, prepare and Away team."
"Lt. Santir, you'll be with me." she said as she walked off the
bridge.
Minutes later, on the Borg ship, the Away team, consisting of
Lt. Santir, Commander Lantasa, and Lt. Efron, a security officer,
appeared. Moments later, three Romulan officer appeared beside them.
One held what appeared to be a scanner. "I believe the cloaking coil is
in that direction." They started walking. Borg officers walked by,
apparently oblivious to the life forms on their ship. In a few moments,
the green peice of the Sentrip's hull came into view. The Romulans
pulled out their disruptors, and before Commander Lantasa could stop
them, disintegrated the coil. Six Borg officers came out of their
slots, and walked towards the intruders. A green ray came out of one's
arm module, striking Pakek in the chest.
"Beam us up! Tell the Romulans they have one injured."
Commander Lantasa said through her communicator.
"Commander, the Romulans have lost their transporter
capabilities. After you beamed over, the Borg shot at them. We'll have
to beam them up as well."
"Very Well, just do it! Direct to sickbay!" Just before the
transporter locked on, she pulled out her phaser, deciding that she
might as well do as much damage as possible. She fired at as many Borg
slots as possible. The familier tingle of the transporter took effect,
then the scene shifted to Sickbay. They lifted the injured Romulan onto
a bed. "Dr. Clampet! I sure hope you know something about patching up
Romulans!" As the young doctor ran from his office, Commander Lantasa
walked over to the bed where the Borg lied.
"You will be fine Pakek," she heard one of the Romulans say to
his injured crewmate. Commander Lantasa looked at the Borg. It's
almost white face seemed almost locked in a smile, as if happy to be
freed from the Borg.
* * *
Captain Bant looked at the screen, where the Romulan Commander's
face was almost as white as the Borg's. "We should fire all available
weapons, perhaps to make it regenerate untill we can find a better plan.
Do you agree Commander Tasir?" The Commander nodded. The screen was
replaced by the Borg ship. "Fire all weapons!" Phasers and Torpedos
blasted into the cube. From the Romulans, Disruptor beams started
firing. The miniscule damage suffered by the Borg made them stop to
regenerate. The captain turned to the man occupying Lt. Santir's
position. "Tell all senior staff there's a conference in five minutes.
He walked up the ramp that led to the conference room.
The captain agreed with a nod. "Ensign, seperate saucer
section."
* * *
They saw the saucer. Their experience with Locutus told them
the damage it could do could be ignored. So they did.
* * *
"Engage!" The ships instantly circled around the cube at Warp
1. They went over the same course again and again.
"Captain, the Warp Loop is fortified, and we have confirmed
reports from the Sentrip and our Saucer section."
"Tell them to pull away now..."
The ships stopped circling and went in seperate directions. The
strain was obviously to much for the Borg ship. It exploded, large
peices still attached to the Warp Loops. "Incoming transmission from
the Sentrip."
"Onscreen."
"Captain Bant...I would like to thank you for your help. This
will probably change nothing between our peoples, and the next time we
meet, it could very well be in battle against each other. But thank you.
I'm sure you won't mind if we take part of the Borg ship for us to
study?"
"Be our guest. And we wre glad to help. We'd probably do it
again if we had to." Tasir nodded, and the transmission ended.
"Ensign, connect the Saucer Section.
Both ships left towards their side of the Neutral Zone. Captain
Bant could not help but think that they had accomplished something more
than just destroying a Borg ship.
Later, Commander Lantasa walked on the Bridge. "As I recall,
you still owe me a tour."
The captain smiled and said, "So I do.."

Incidently, this story is written by Peter Dimitriadis, but send all
comments to Paul Dimitriadis, as we share the time equally. I've
decided to make the stories of the USS Eagle into a series, and I'm
already working on #2. Perhaps I'll post it someday as well.
