I/O Controller (IOC) board
==========================

A logic board in the Pico-Engine; an independent processor that handles
the transfer of data through eight I/O ports and a TTY port controlled
by EP software.



I/O Controller (IOC-II x) board
===============================

A logic board in the Turbo Engine specifically designed for controlling
serial data communications lines. Each board contains a CPU, memory,
and serial interface devices. These boards are used with Paddle boards
via the VMEbus. There are two types of IOC-II boards: IOC-II 4 and
IOC-II 8. IOC-II 4 supports up to 4 high-speed ports, using the RS-422
or V.35 Paddle board. IOC-II 8 supports up to 8 medium-speed ports,
using the RS-232-C Paddle board.




I/O Controller Operations (IOCP) board
======================================

An IOC board debugging tool that runs under Turbo-SCP. Manager (IOCOM)
I/O Control Processor I/O Controller (IOC-II x) board. A logic board in
the Turbo Engine specifically designed for controlling serial data
communications lines. Each board contains a CPU, memory, and serial
interface devices. These boards are used with Paddle boards via the
VMEbus. There are two types of IOC-II boards: IOC-II 4 and IOC-II 8.
IOC-II 4 supports up to 4 high-speed ports, using the RS-422 or V.35
Paddle board. IOC-II 8 supports up to 8 medium-speed ports, using the
RS-232-C Paddle board.




IBM 4 of 8
==========

A constant ratio code that has exactly four 1s and four 0s in every
byte and has a total of 70 different characters.

An IBM personal computer; a 286-based machine.

IDA ISIS Data Area.
===================

A section of memory (segment F) that contains global, read-only
information, such as the system clock and Dispatcher message lengths.




identifier
==========

A label used in source code files (Tymfiles, Configuration files, and
Initialization files) that identifies a variable and associates it with
an actual value. In the example ILL EQ 1, ILL is the variable and is
equated to the value 1. Also called label.




IDN
===

International Data Number.




IEC
===

International Electrotechnical Committee. IEEE Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers. An organization of scientists and engineers
whose purpose is the advancement of electrical engineering,
electronics, and allied branches of engineering and science.




IF
==

Interface. A shared boundary between two subsystems or two devices,
systems, or programs. Also, the interaction between two devices or
systems that handle data in different ways: different codes or formats.




IHSA
====

ISIS High-Speed Access. An ISIS product that works in conjunction
with the RJE interface to service bisynchronous customers. It offers
bisync-to-async (EBCDIC-to-ASCII) conversion and virtual circuit mode.
This is a customized service for running specialized applications.




IIX
===

Interface Information Exchange. A BT North America internal protocol
that allows interfaces within the TYMNET network to communicate
information, such as choice of dialects at a level below that of the
end user. Each end of the circuit must verify that the other end is
IIX-capable before communication begins.




IMF
===

Information Management Facility.

An NTD development phase that details low-level program design,
coding, and unit testing.

A disk storage area where data files (BT North America software
releases) are temporarily stored when first entered into the
CMF system.




IMS
===

- Information Management System. An IBM database management system
capable of managing complex databases and networks.
- Internal Maintenance Specification. An internal NTD document that
describes a product. It includes data structures, message formats,
decision tables, and module logic, which is later refined during
implementation and testing. Once the IMS is completed, the GID
becomes obsolete. It is the last development document to be written.




In List
=======

A list containing information regarding the status of incoming OnTyme
messages, read or unread. Contrast with Out List.



in place
========

Specific hosts or nodes that appear in the origination or destination
lists of an Access Profile Entry that are not part of a class or group.




index
=====

The identification of an element in an array; the identifi- cation is
independent of the size of the element.




information bits
================

Line control information consisting of bits that have no relation to
alphabet sets. Each packet contains these bits which are specifically
added to the header in distinctive places. See header. Information
Management System (IMS) An IBM data base management system capable of
managing complex databases and networks.




information processing
======================

One or more operations performed on data to achieve a desired
objective. Also called data processing.




Information Service
===================

TYMNET Information Service. A BT North America on-line service that
provides instant access to current information about the TYMNET network
and its services. For example, this service provides information about
finding most database, applications, and computer services.




initialize
==========

To originate or establish the basic conditions or startup state of a
computer device.




Input Ring (IRING)
==================

A circular buffer in the slot containing incoming Dispatcher messages.
Used for communications between the Dispatcher and slots. Contrast with
Output Ring (ORING).




input sector
============

Window. An area of memory in Node Code where packets are temporarily
stored as they are received from a link.




Input/Output table
==================

Permuter table. A table listing each channel, by line, in Node Code.
Used in mapping the path of each virtual circuit within the node.




Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE)
=======================================================

An organization of scientists and engineers whose purpose is the
advancement of electrical engineering, electronics, and allied branches
of engineering and science.



Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
==========================================

A new set of digital communications services intended to integrate
voice and data communications. ISDN provides the means to transmit
analog signals (voice, modem tones) digitally. ISDN provides a wideband
digital pipe, which can reduce the number of individual networks that
an organization needs. There are two types of ISDN access interfaces:
Basic Rate Interface (BRI) and Primary Rate Interface (PRI).




intelligent terminal
====================

A data terminal that has its own software control with the ability to
store and process data. Examples are computers and word processors.
Contrast with dumb terminals.




Inter-Process and Input/Output Controller (IPCF)
================================================

Firmware located on the File Server (FS) board and each Communication
Facility of the General Processor (GP) (IOC-II x) boards allowing
communication between the functional units in the Turbo Engine system.





interactive processing
======================

A computer operation in which each item is processed as it is entered
(on a time scale of seconds). An example is automatic teller machines
(ATMs).




interactive working
===================

A session between a terminal and a host computer involving keyboard
input from the terminal and a response or data transfer from the host.




Interexchange Channel (IXC)
===========================

A channel between exchanges (central offices).

==============

An unscheduled BT North America software release between baseline
announcements. Released when an existing baseline release is found to
be outdated or lacking information, and a general distribution of
another release of the product is warranted.




Intermediate Text Block (ITB)
=============================

In Binary Synchronous Communications (BSC), a control character used
to terminate an intermediate block of characters. The block-check
character is sent immediately following ITB, and line-turnaround does
not occur. The response following End of Transmission Block (ETB) or
End of Text (ETX) also applies to all of the ITB checks immediately
preceding the clock terminated by ETB or ETX.

=============

One of several Node Code processes that handles circuit termination
for internal functions (down-line loading, XRAY, and delay measurement)




Internal Maintenance Specification (IMS)
========================================

An internal NTD document that describes a product. It includes data
structures, message formats, decision tables, and module logic, which
is later refined during implemen- tation and testing. Once the IMS is
completed, the GID becomes obsolete. The IMS is the last development
document to be written.




Internally Switched Interface System (ISIS)
===========================================

The operating system for a TYMNET node; provides functions that control
the overall operation of an Engine. These functions include, but are
not limited to, memory allocation, message switching, job scheduling,
interrupt processing, and I/O distribution. ISIS allows multiple data
communications functions to run on a single processor. Two of its many
services are debugging and I/O port management. Formerly known as
ISIS-II or ISIS2.




Internally Switched Interface System Recovery Module (ISRM)
===========================================================

The software component of the Automatic Port Switching System (APSS),
residing in an ISIS slot, that automatically switches user access to
the backup Engine when a fault is detected in the Engine. Provides
the user interface and control of the Port Switch Module (PSM).

Internally Switched Interface System-68K (ISIS-68K)
===================================================

ISIS for the Turbo environment. Functions similarly to ISIS but has
added functions for the Turbo Engine GP boards.



International Alphabet #5 (IA5)
===============================

One of several telegraph and data communications codes developed as
an international standard. IA5 is derived from the United States
ASCII standard and is sanctioned by the International Standards
Organization (ISO) and the CCITT.




International Record Carrier (IRC)
==================================

Companies authorized by the United States government to carry data
traffic and offer leased circuits between the United States and other
countries. Examples are MCI and TRT Communications. This type of
permission from the United States government is no longer required
for data traffic.




International Record Carrier (IRC) code
=======================================

An internal code used by the Supervisor to designate which TYM2
protocol line is used by a node, from an international location to
another location, to set up a specific call. This code tracks calls
for accounting purposes.




International Standards Organization (ISO)
==========================================

An organization that aids in the development of industry standards
for communications throughout the world.




International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
============================================

An organization that promotes the standardization of telecommunications
worldwide. The CCITT is one of two committees under the ITU. The ITU
is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.




International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCITT)
====================================================================

An organization of the United Nations, whose task it is to make
technical recommendations about telephone, telegraph, and data
communications interfaces.



Internet Packet Exchange (IPX)
==============================

An internetworking protocol developed by Novell to run all NetWare
services. IPX allows users at workstations to communicate with other
user-devices on the network. Also used by local and remote bridges
to perform internetwork routing services. IPX is implemented by
Xerox Network Systems protocols. See Local Area Network.



internode control circuit
=========================

A special circuit on each link, using channel 0, that connects each
Node Code to that of each of its neighbor nodes.



interpreted code
================

Engine machine language instructions that must be translated by an
interpreter to run in the Turbo Engine.




interpreter
===========

A program that executes another program by performing the source code
instructions without first translating them into object code.



interrupts
==========

Signal messages that cause the current instruction stream to be
interrupted and start the execution of an alternate instruction stream.
The original instruction stream will eventually be resumed at the point
of interruption. Interrupts are generated at a regular (and high) rate
by the Engine hardware clock and are processed by the code to update
the software clocks. See clock.




intranodal circuit
==================

A circuit originating and terminating within a single node.




IPCF
====

Inter-Processor Communication Facility. Firmware located on the File
Server (FS) board and each of the General Processor (GP) and
Input/Output Controller (IOC-II x) boards allowing communication
between the functional units in the Turbo Engine system.

===

Input Process Output.




IPSS
====

International Packet Switching Service.



IPX
===

Internet Packet Exchange. An internetworking protocol developed by
