OEM
===

Original Equipment Manufacturer. A manufacturer of equipment that may
be marketed by another manufacturer.




off-line
========

A piece of equipment or a device not in direct communication with
the CPU.

==

Operations Manager. A program operators can use to monitor and
dynamically change the status of network software products. Provides
status information about throughput; port, line, and node management;
errors; and statistical performance analysis.




on-line
=======

A piece of equipment or a device in direct communication with the CPU.




on-line reconfiguration
=======================

An ISIS-68K function that allows a new SYSCON file to reconfigure a
GP board; occurs without disrupting the running of other unaffected

======

A BT North America enhanced service that provides the user an
electronic mail system to send and receive messages through computer

Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)
==================================

A key element in datacommunication is the International Standards
Organization (ISO) model for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI). This
is a model for modular construction of software for datacommunication
and serves as a functional guideline for universal intercomputer
communication. It was developed in the late 1970s and formally adopted
as an international standard in the spring of 1983. This model is known
as CCITT X.200 or ISO 7498. It is composed of seven layers: Physical,
Datalink, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application.
Contrast with Systems Architecture Network (SNA).




operand
=======

Data upon which an operation is performed. For example, in the
expression 1 + 2, 1 and 2 are operands.

================

System software that controls the overall operation of a computer
system.

A message that is sent in response to the receipt of a Yellow Ball
notifying the originator that the data has been received. Also called
ISIS Dispatcher message type AD.

origination address
===================

The address that originates a circuit or message.




Origination and Destination tables
==================================

A database found on each Supervisor's disk that contains lists of
origination hosts and nodes and destination hosts in a TYMNET network.
At login, the Supervisor reads from this database to validate the
user's circuit request. The NETVAL program manages this database and
forwards this information to each Supervisor. Also called Class
(origination) and Group (destination) tables.




origination host
================

An address on an origination node from which a circuit is built for a
BT North America user session. Contrast with destination host.




origination list
================

A list of allowable origination items (node, host, name, class).




origination node
================

A node in the network from which a successful login was made and a
virtual circuit built. This node usually serves as a terminal
interface (TIF). Contrast with destination node.




origination port
================

Specifies which port number on the node is sending the data. Contrast
with destination port, which is the receiving port.




ORING
=====

Output Ring. A circular buffer in the slot containing outgoing
Dispatcher messages. Used for communication between the Dispatcher
and slots. Contrast with Input Ring (IRING).

Out List
========

A list containing information regarding the status of outgoing OnTyme
messages, read or unread. Contrast with In List.




OutDial
=======

Public Asynchronous OutDial or Private Asynchronous OutDial. A BT North
America enhanced service that allows the user to communicate with
remote asynchronous computers and terminals that are not subscribers to
the TYMNET network, over publicly available ports. OutDial can be used
to send information from a central computer to remote asynchronous
devices, from a PC to another PC, or from a terminal or PC to an
asynchronous computer.




Output Ring (ORING)
===================

A circular buffer in the slot containing outgoing Dispatcher messages.
Used for communication between the Dispatcher and slots. Contrast with
Input Ring (IRING).




output sector
=============

Window. An area of memory in Node Code where packets are temporarily
stored as they are received from a link. Also called input sector or
output sector.




overhead
========

Computer time used to keep track of or run the system as compared with
computer time used to process data. Also, Control information, in the
form of bits, that is added to and transmitted with data.




overhead bit
============

A bit such as a check bit or framing bit that is added to the data as
part of the management of the packet.
