<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

fault handler
=============

An ISIS-68K process that determines the action performed when an
exception occurs in the foreground or background process (Run, Halt,

foreground and background processes are in a wait state. An exception
is recorded in the event log.

between host computers and a packet-switching network. Also called
communications processor.

the VMEbus system controller and controller for the local disk option.
See General Processor (GP) board.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

file system
===========

A method used to transfer files between the boards and the local
system disk in the Turbo Engine. The file system consists of the file
server program and the system disk. Also, the collection of
directories and files stored on a disk. The rules governing the
structure of data stored on disk or tape.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

file system program
===================

File system software (resident on the FS board in the Turbo Engine)
that accesses the local disk drive through the Small Computer Systems
Interface (SCSI). This system also supports automatic bootstrap and
logging functions.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

FIP
===

Federal Information Processing standards.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

firmware
========

A set of software instructions stored permanently or semipermanently
in read-only memory (ROM).

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

First Customer Shipment (FCS)
=============================

Term used to indicate the date a product is available.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

flag
====

A program indicator used to identify a condition that occurred earlier
in the program. A flag is bit-oriented. It can indicate an error, the
result of a command entry, an ON or OFF condition, or a statement in
the Configuration file. Flag syntax usually starts with the word ENABLE
See bit array.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

floppy disk
===========

A light-weight, flexible disk that allows information to be stored
magnetically. Also called diskette.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

flow control
============

The method of regulating the flow of data to prevent data loss on a
circuit. Backpressure may be used to ensure that data in the network
flows smoothly without flooding nodes, terminals, or concentrators.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

FM
==

Frequency Modulation. The frequency of a sine-wave is modified in
accordance with the information to be transmitted. Contrast with
Amplitude Modulation.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

folder
======

An OnTyme permanent storage facility for a group of related files
(common topics and/or subjects) that can be accessed frequently.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

foreground process
==================

An ISIS processing job used for fast, simple, high-priority tasks.
The foreground process is executed at a fixed periodic rate
(real time). Contrast with background process.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

foreign exchange line
=====================

A line offered by a common carrier in which a termination in one
central office is assigned a number belonging to a remote central
office.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

FORTRAN
=======

Formula Translator. A high-level language best suited for performing
mathematical computations.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

frame
=====

In data-link transmission, the sequence of contiguous bits bracketed by
beginning and ending flag sequences. BT North America refers to the
frame as a packet.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Frame Check Sequence (FCS)
==========================

A sequence of bits attached to a frame that aids in the detection and
correction of errors in a data link.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

frame relay
===========

An alternative packet-switching method that relies more on
origination-to-destination error checking than on node-to-node error
checking. It is used over high-speed, low-error-rate communications
lines, such as T1 digital data service. It is more efficient than
traditional packet-switching methods because it can deliver higher
throughput with lower delay.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

A fault action that stops execution of code without disconnecting
circuits and devices. The code can be restarted from the current state.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
