Subject: Atari ST Maple (symbolic algebra package) for sale -- $200

For sale: Atari ST Maple version 4.2
Maple is a symbolic algebra package, capable of doing algebra and
calculus on all sorts of expressions. It can also graph functions and
numerically integrate things it can't do symbolic. Much faster than
looking up those nasty integrals in your nasty 1,000 page book of
integrals written by some poor souls locked away in a Siberian labor
camp.
This program is similar to other packages like Mathematica, Macsyma,
and Derive. It sells for $400 (list price).
Includes all manuals (tutorial, reference, Atari installation), and
the original distribution disks in shrink-wrap. Requires about 4
megabytes of disk space, plus at least 1 megabyte of ram, preferably
more. I don't know if it will run on a TT or not.
I'm asking $200, plus shipping.

Subject: Diamond Back II

Has anyone else used Diamond Back II for HD backups ??? If so, have
you successfully restored files ???
I recently started using it for the first time and after backing up
my C: partition to a dozen double sided floppies (compressed, file
splitting allowed), I tried to restore to another partition. The
first floppy seemed to go ok, but when I got to the second, it was
skipped over in just a couple of seconds. Then when I inserted the
3rd as requested, I got an error message claiming that the next file
had been compressed with the wrong number of bits.
I tried a second time (I completely resaved the partition first) and
this time when I got to the second disk I got an error message claiming
the diskette was unlabelled.
Another problem I've had is that the automatic disk switching doesn't
seem to be working correctly. If I insert the next disk while another
is being used and press the drive letter as I understood the instructions,
I still don't get automatic switching when the first disk is completed.

The ST will never get the software it needs to serious in any respect
except maybe programming and games. THATS ALL.
Atari MUST DUMP TOS and go with UNIX, or in the future make current
machines that help Mr. Small's emulation efforts...indirectly of course..:)

520 STfm (1 Meg) in excellent condition. Also includes mega-touch springs.
It is less than a year and half old. The system comes with all original
disks, manuals, cables, power supply, and box.
PRICE: $250.00.
Supra 20 Meg Hard Drive. A new host adaptor was recently replaced in it.
The mechinism does have its problems. A part of the mechinism sometimes
needs to be jiggled in order to work. My dealer claims that has no problems
with it and I shouldn't have any problem with it as long as I keep it on.
But since there does to be problems and I'm honest enough to say so,
I'm not charging for it. You may want to just replace it anyways since
it is only 20 megs.
Also comes with host adaptor, controller, manuals, cables, disks, case,
fan, power supply, original box, etc...

Syncho Express. Copies all disks. 22 seconds for single sided, 44 for double
sided. Two drives required (external and internal or external and external).

You must alao ensure that the format track buffer in the program is big
enough. Many variable format programs are useless in this respect unless
the source is fixed to give a larger buffer. I stopped using the format
program that was distributed way back when with STart magazine because it
will not format more than 14 sectors. Now I usually use KnifeST from HiSoft
for formatting as it gives complete flexibility over all format parameters.

Your problem is that AES is initialized and expects a menu bar in the TOP
row. This means that when the mouse is in the TOP row AES gives mouse control
to the MENU manager.
One solution is not use AES at all not even for event polling. Use AES only
if you want to use menu's and dialogs.
There are VDI functions that can perform this task for you. Describing them
here would be to much so I suggest that you get your hands on a good book
about VDI (Profibuch) and try to figure out how to use VDI for this.
If you run into a specific problem that VDI cannot solve according to your
knowlegde ask again.
Some function names you should look at are:
vex_motv install mouse movement interrupt vector
vex_butv button
vrq_valuator several input routines
vrq_string
vrq_locator
vrq_choice
Hope this will help you one step futher!

I don't know the exact number of Abaq transputer machines that were made,
but I am under the impression that the number is in the low hundreds at
best. It ran a new somewhat-buggy OS that supported parallel processing
and is used in a few universities in Europe.
They probably never sold enough of them to even cover a fraction of the
R&D cost.

Does anybody who uses ST Minix read this newsgroup (anymore) ? Frans
Meulenbroeks (who's name is on the COVER of the ST Minix vers. 1.5
manual ) I know shows up occasionally. anyone else ?
What to do if you want to use partitions BEYOND /dev/hd4 on ST Minix
1.5 from Prentis-Hall ? Well..... you have to upgrade(=patch) Minix
from version 1.5.10.0 (the version SHIPPED by Prentis-Hall) to at
least version 1.5.10.3 and recompile the thing...... Yes, it DOES
work!!! The patches are available somewhere on plains.nodak.edu for
anonymous ftp.
Now, if you want to be able to use MORE than 5 partitions at one time
(Which is a different matter than using partitions out beyond
/dev/hd4) you'll have to change a #define somewhere. Since I haven't
done it I don't remember where it is..... 4 partitons is more than
enough for my purposes.
There is a newsgroup where people are only too happy to help out with
minix questions.....

Hya!
First, thank your for your quick answer. But the problem, I have, is
where to poke the font address to. In my programs I user my own fonts,
too. But I wrote them with TOS 1.02. Now, after I installed TOS 1.04,
texts aren't displayed with MY fonts when I use the GfA-Basic TEXT
command. Using TOS 1.02, the address was $8820, but now?! The TOS font
address (the address where to poke the font location to) is still SUB(L%A,
22).

It's worth pointing out that the flat monthly fee only applies if you call
after 6pm, before 6am, or on weekends. Otherwise all services are $18/hour
(ouch!) or $24/hour for 9600 baud (Double ouch!).

but you pay a connect charge of $8us per hour, but no charge for
uploading files, but you pay for all other times,
but no line charges even from here..

It looks like we are about to get a new generation of USENET users in
comp.sys.atari.st. The bombardment of computer sales over this facility
tells me that the experienced (but not developer) users are leaving atari
for more prestigious computer systems. This is great news because we should
see a new wave of enthusiastic users who got a really good deal on the
computer that provides power without the price (and in this case really
without the price).
This prompts me to re-encourage us to make the atari archives as user
friendly as possible. This includes documentation to set up
- MiNT
- command line editors/shells (bash, gulam, ksh)
- TeX/LaTeX
- Uniterm Macros
- Sozobon C (I think the easy to install package already exists)
- GNU C
- g++
Also, its time for us to be flame-retardent. Don't flame, and when you see
a flame skip it (I use the "k" functions of rn).

Yes, I did it.
And here is what to do:
1) Take out the old (720k) drive.
2) Put in the new one.
3) It works.
Allthough this works, I wouldn't recommend doing it, since the WD1772-chip isn't
supposed to be able to cope with 16 Mhz. Wait for the new chip from atari !!
Note: You have to have your own software to FORMAT HD-disks, but TOS will
automagically read/write HD/normal disks. If you have source to a floppy-
formatter, just change number of sectors to 18 instead of 9 and recompile.
You will then have a HD-formatter.
Also if you have Tos >= 3.05, you can set a DIP-switch so that you may
format HD-disks from the desktop.

Alxe Kieran mentioned on GEnie recently that Hisoft is
updating their Lattice C compiler soon. It is supposed
to have an intergrated project management (aka MAKE).
there is also supposed to be a new "ToolPac" which
will contain many UNIX tools for the LC5 package.
Now, could someone in the UK ask Hisoft about this update?
And about the ToolPac?
I am on Hisoft's mailing list but who knows?

Oh my, why do people insist on making life difficult for themselves?
Why don't you simply use CS-TeX, available from several atari servers via ftp.
This program sets up EVERYTHING, the INSTALL.PRG builds all the right files,
directories etc.
There's a TeX shell that makes document recompilation a 3-key issue.
There's an automated Metafont that makes all fonts for your output device(s)
automatically, either on the fly as you need them, or as an overnight job.
Naturally, there's a previewer included that works with printer fonts, to
save on disk space. And of course there's a Panasonic printer driver.

Well if you have brought 1st_Word Plus, you can upgrade to version
3.15, this I have read is the TT version, should work for the Mega STE..??

FOLDR750 is outrageous! Needless to say, CS-TeX runs fine on TOS < 1.4 with
FOLDR090 or so. I don't use FOLDRxxx at all (TOS 1.4) and never had any
trouble running it.

I have always used the good old Atari black joysticks. They work well, are
durable, and are *cheap*. ;) By the way, I have a 1040ST.

In mail to me, Lars-Erik Osterud remarks that some games didn't work under
some TOSes because TOS uses Timer A, which is "reserved for applications."
What happened is that TOS used that timer DURING BOOT, which is perfectly
reasonable. After the boot sequence, it does not use that timer. However,
it left the timer and its interrupt channel in a state other than the reset
state. If the game programmer had not made assumptions about the state of
that timer, the game would have worked.
The same thing would happen if you ran some other program before the game,
using old TOS, and that program used Timer A (legally) but left it in a
state other than the reset state. Correct programs do not assume anything
about a resource like this, and approach it carefully. Incorrect programs
might, for example, unmask the interrupt before they install the vector,
because they think it's not enabled or the timer isn't running.
The newest TOS leaves that timer in the same state it boots up in: with the
interrupt disabled and the timer stopped. This is an example of the other
kind of pain we go through in the name of compatibility: we even try to
make badly-written programs continue to work.
Finally, for everybody: any time you refer to "some programs" not working,
PLEASE name the programs, so we can check out the reasons here. We run new
TOSes on our library, but we don't have all programs in the library, and we
don't try them in all ways. If you can name a program that doesn't work,
we want to hear it so we can investigate. If it doesn't just bomb on
start-up or something, then explain how to make it fail.

This is a ME TOO !
I have the same problem with games. Atari should forget about tricky
people sparing a few dollars for the ROM's by using a disk. You loose
a lot of memory and the ROM's are much more comfortable, if something
went's wrong.
They should place an Atari Emulator for PC's on the market, showing that
emulating a little, outdated 68000 is a very hard job for those super,
duper 80486's. May be the users like the ST-software and then buy a
ST for using it ...
