Subject: dbackup v1.22 released
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I have just sent a copy of dbackup V1.22 to atari.archive.umich.edu ...
For those who have not yet used dbackup it is a backup program which can
use any compression utility (eg. zoo or lharc) to compress files instead of
just copying it. It should be media independent (although I doubt tape drives
work with it). Unfortunately some compression utilities do not support storing
information such as whether a file is a hidden or system file so all may not
work. (most notably arc.ttp does not).
New options:
-y backup only root directory of the source, skipping sub-dirs
-e enable use of extended command lines when calling archivers
-b "batch" mode operation
The new batch mode option makes it a lot easier to use dbackup since dbackup
can now be used with more archaic shells or directly from the desktop.
When using the '-b' option you just say:
dbackup -b <userdefined mode>
and dbackup will then search a file called dbackup.inf which has all the
definitions on what to do for that particular mode. There is no restriction
(except on RAM) on the number of modes a user can define this way. All the
options normally available through the command line is available this way.
The '-e' option was added since zoo and others support the extended command
line protocol for transfering more than 127 bytes on the command line. This
in turn makes it go a lot faster when backing up a lot of files. (it *does*
still take some time, though, to backup a 32Mb partition!!)
If you have any difficulties in obtaining dbackup via ftp please let me know
and I'll consider posting it to c.b.a.st
A messy-dos version is planned to be released later this spring.
I hope someone finds it useful. I do.

I've read so many zany solutions to the end of DM, it's quite amusing. (Or
at least the first 10 were :-} ). You *don't* have to put up 8 fluxcages,
and you *don't* have to go into the little room in the corner and fill it
with fluxcages! First, kill off most (or all) the demons, they are quite
irritating; can't remember if they regenerate or not. Then, do one of the
following, which are both straightforward, but the first is *much easier*!
1) Chaos is scared stiff of the war cry! Honest. Put the firestaff/gem
in one champion's hand, and nothing in the other 3 (this probably
won't work if you have 1 or 2 champions in your party). Stay out of
Chaos's direct line of fire, and manouver so you're facing the side
wall near where you came out in the open, and at the opposite end of
the level from where the small enclosed room is. Make sure Chaos is
between you and the side wall, it's not too hard. In the far corner,
there are two one-square alcoves in the wall. Have your 3 chars
start doing war cries as fast as you can click, one after the other.
Chaos will run like hell away from you. If you do it so you are outside
of him relative to the corner, in his panic he will run right into one
of the alcoves. Run up 2 squares in front of him, do ONE fluxcage,
which traps him in the alcove. Step forward into your fluxcage, and
fuse him. Boom - game over. I've done this about 5 times in a row,
it's real easy.
2) The other good way, although quite a bit harder, involves putting up
FOUR fluxcages around yourself, by spinning in place, not moving off
your square. Step back *one* square into one of your fluxcages, making
sure you are now facing Chaos. He always moves in the direction he's
facing, and will often teleport right in front of you in the middle of
your cages. Fuse him real quick, and he's toast.
- kn
ps. Too bad the ST version doesn't have war cry sounds! The Amoeba
version does. (sigh)

Try these suggestions:
1) 16Mhz CPU upgrade
2) 4Megs of memory
3) 21ms < access time hard disk
4) Don't run g++ in the background, under multiGEM or MiNT, avoid
even using these programs if you can.
And of course, you could always buy an SST board, and really burn
some scanning time through your machine.
I recommend an SST-030 16Mhz is cheap but 33Mhz is more realistic.

installation had no problems but I can't understand a word of german and am new

Can anyone explain to me how to use the draw.sty correctly, I have manage to

with some help in sorting out the parameters required for it.
Also I have heard about Slitex (sp?) and I was wonder what is it, and what to
do to get it install on my machine (if I descided to use it) using CS-TeX

Hello Everyone,
I'm starting to write my master's thesis and was hoping you guys
there in Germany would know of any document processors that
can read in images as Borland PIC or HPGL files, support both FSM GDOS
and postscript output, and are otherwise solid and user friendly
programs? I know there is no such beast over here, and was hoping maybe
there was such a thing there. A friend of mine from Germany is going
home for a week in February and could pick it up for me. I can read
German, so the docs wouldn't be a problem.
Thanks in advance for your help,

The problem is a bug in the library used to compile tcsh; the ttyname()
function crashes when called on a pseudo-terminal. A work-around is
to create a symbolic link in u:\dev that points to the appropriate
file name in u:\pipe (i.e. the name of the pseudo-tty). This is the
reason that tcsh doesn't work under MGR, too.

pwd isn't built into any version of tcsh (the ST source code is essentially
the same as the Unix). It's an easy enough program to write -- I'll
leave it as an exercise for the reader :-).
I don't know how to change the font; tcsh just writes to the standard
output, in this case the BIOS console device. It would be possible to
write a new BIOS console that used whatever font one wished, I
suppose.

I know nothing about Notator, but Calamus was developped around a new
concept of typesetting. This gives real WYSIWYG, in contrast with
postscript, which sometimes gives surprising results (not like you thought
you had designed it) and has proven not to be compatible with itself.
Especially with high resolution typesetters.
I wonder why why why you need an interceptor to convert Calamus
output for 300dpi laserprinters to a postscript file, since the creators
of Calamus provide drivers for every printer you can think of.
But yes, if you really want to go back to oldfashioned postscript,
for Calamus SL, there is a module to convert a Calamus document to EPS.
I suggest you ask DMC for it.

Firstly, greg makes the assumption that when a new version of a piece of
software comes out, the old version suddenly vaporized. Wrong. People
cazn get by just fine with Word 4.0 on the Spectre. I bet that 90% of
all Word users, Mac Atari, PC, and Amiga do not use even close to 30% of
it's current features, let alone 5.0. Also, It is quite easy to run all
those programs under sys 7 with 4 megs. I know, I've done it. You have
to change the maximum alotted memory size for each program, which slows
them down a bit, but not much, but they still all work OK. Besides Sys 7
has virtual memory, So just get a bigger hard disk. No real caps there.
SuperPaint is a memory hog anyway. It works fine when you force it to
run under less memory. It is just greedy.

True indeed, Francois Lionet (the author of STOS, for those not in the know)
has moved over to the Amiga, but a little piece in ST Format stated that
Mandarin *are* going to release STOS 3D - the release data was quoted as
either the end of January of the end of February (can't remember off hand)

a copy, but not have access to either of these then please mail me, and I
will send you a .uue file of the latest issue - it is BIG though (approx
400k).
Also, if anyone know the procedure for uploads to places like
atari.archive, then I would love to hear from you.
Hope someone enjoys it. The issue currently in the pipeline will be
the best yet.
Lee.

Thanks to everyone for their responses to my query about STOS 3D.
If anyone has any other news about STOS developments, let me know.
Also, does anyone know if the STOS Gameswriter competition is still
running?
Thanks,
Bruce
