Wrong.
It's possible (and eminently desirable, if you ask me) to write programs
like this which work both textually from a command line and graphically
from the desktop. It's not even very hard.
Reading this thread, I'm wondering where this idea came from. Why is it
that y'all think that if a program uses GEM it's unthinkable for the
same program to work with arguments from a CLI?

Just as you aren't saying don't make ARJ use from the desktop impossible
(wow, TRIPLE negative! My 8th grade English teacher would be shocked),
I'm saying PLEASE include a GEM UI in ARJ *along with the command line
options*.
Nobody wants to take your CLI away from you, nor do we want to force
you to use the desktop for programming. That is not the issue here.
The reason I posted my original request is that the number one
complaint about archive programs which I hear from users
(and yes, I listen to a lot of users, and not just here on Usenet, either)
is that these programs are way too hard to learn and use because of the
bewildering array of switches and options. A lot of users, you'd
probably be amazed to know how many, wonder what TTP programs are doing
in TOS in the first place.
Please, it's not that hard to make a program do double duty as a GEM
program with menus and windows and icons and as a CLI program with a
bewildering set of confusing switches that you have to look up every
time you want to use the program for something different.
I like to encourage programmers to make their programs easier for the
majority of users to use, because that makes the ST a better machine.
Obviously, with special purpose tools like programming tools, which
won't be used by most users, the user interface can be as nonexistent
as the programmers will put up with.
For a general-purpose tool like an archiver, it's important that a lot
of people will be able to use it by double clicking on its icon from
the desktop, looking up the options in the menus, performing familiar
operations in windows and dialogs. Graphical shells are nice as far
as they go, but that's just one more level of indirection, and one
more thing for the user to have to know (where did I put that archive
program, anyways...).
Keep it simple. Put it in one program, with an embedded resource
file, and make it work graphically from the desktop, or textually
from a shell.
Am I asking too much? I don't think so.
Do I want to have my cake and eat it as well? You bet I do.

|[Super long discussion on the merits of CLIs for programming, etc.]
On the subject of ARJ port for the ST. I have a simple request:
- Either include the GEM interface as Ken Badertscher has asked
for (you know, CLI version that when it is run from the desktop
will present a GEM interface..)
or
- Make the source to your port available so that someone like myself
or Ken Badertscher can do the GEM version ourselves.
Last point.. Programmers use CLIs. Users don't. Well, Atari users don't
anyway :-)

So - that's it! I've been puzzled why CNTRL-C does not work on my
Mega ST-4 when I give it as an input to Cconin() - whereas it DOES work if
I compile the SAME program on my STE ( by the way I use MWC version 3.0.6).
However MWC's gets() function seems to respond correctly to CNTRL-C
on the older TOSes whereas my own "gets()" function (which uses Cconin())
does not - but is OK on the STE.
Sorry I missed the begining of this debate - but I would be obliged
if anyone could mail me if they know how to ENABLE CNTRL-C in response to
Cconin() ( short of Allen Pratt's sledgehammer solution of upgrading the
TOS - or would he prefer I buy a new Mega STE? )
Sincerely, W. Alan B. Evans

To: info-atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Hello netter,
I can't get rid of one bug in one of my program. I use the line
A to display text. I use Line A and not GEM callfor the 3 systems fonts
(16*8 8*8 and 6*6) and for the speed. The compilator I use is Turbo C
2.0.
When the I use a clipping rectangle that overlap partially a
line oftext. When I make the redraw I have garbage on the screen and
finally crash of the system. I don't have this problem with equivalent
GEM calls. This situation arrive frequently when an accessory cause a
redraw of my windows.
The routine looks like :
/*after the last GEM call, LINEA */
set_wrt_mode(REPLACE);
grect_to_array(pClip, a4_xy);
set_clip(a4_xy[0], a4_xy[1], a4_xy[2], a4_xy[3], 1);
/*this is the global clipping rectangle*/
for (y = 0; y < Grect.g_h; y += HChar) { /*for each line*/
Grect.g_y += y; grect_to_array(&Grect, a4_xy);
filled_rect(a4_xy[0], a4_xy[1], a4_xy[2], a4_xy[3]);
/*remove background*/
print_string(Grect.g_x, Grect.g_y, 0, "Hello world");
/*that's the string*/
}
In advance thank you very much for suggestions.

Subject: looking for M68000 instruction set
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
On a wild urge, I've decided I want to write an M68000 assembler.
Unfortunately, I don't have ANY documenation on the 68000, and none of the
local book stores (computer or otherwise) have anything on a straight 68000.
SO, does anyone have a complete list of the 68000 instruction set, including
opcode values, as well as all the other necessary numbers? If not, does
anyone know an address or (toll-free) number I can call to get some
information?
Thanks in advance for any information!

"Don't have the time to use this package" SALE
PHASE-4 Solid Object Motion Control and Animation System by Lexicor I
regret that I have to let this one go. Time and limited amounts of
funds are very tight for a full time student. I have not explored the
full potential of this recently new package. The reviews are excellent
about this system. The many different programs that make up this
system has the feel of CAD-3D, DEGAS, Art & Film Director, Neochrome,
and Spectrum 512 all rolled into one.
ROSETTA-3D Translater/Viewer (retail $89.95):
-Translate other programs' files to it's own and vice versa
-"Point and click" animation
-High speed for wire frame and solid objects (large ones too)
CHRONOS Key Frame Animator (retail $249.95):
-3D animations w/out any coding
-Spotlighting, shadows, cameras etc.
-CYBER series compatible
-Cut, copy, paste etc.
PRISM PAINT Drawing Program (retail $79.95):
-ST, STe, MegaSTe, TT resolutions w/1024x768 4096 color mode (MegaSTe, TT)
-24 bit true color mode with 16 million on screen colors (TT)
-Supports Cal-Comp graphics tablet.
-Standard paint functions, slide show, compatible with many picture files.
PRISM RENDER (retail $89.95):
-Turn wire frame creations into "photographic" quality movies.
-Surfaces of objects may be altered to wood, chrome, etc.
PRISM TABLET DRIVER (retail $49.95):
-Utility permitting the use of a PRISM TABLET
Retail values total $480.75. Full PHASE-4 Pak price $369.95 (bought in
6/91). LEXICOR IS RAISING THE PRICES! Upgrades are on the way. All
programs and parts are intact! Will sell for $300.00 (savings $180.75).
Prices are negotiable.

SUPRA HARD DRIVE 30 for ST, STe, MegaSTe, TT
31.49MB formatted, 15 ms track-track seek time, 940,000 bytes/sec data
transfer. I have just sold my ATARI 1040ST without selling the SUPRA
HARD DRIVE 30. I bought an ATARI MegaSTe4 (50MB internal hard drive).
The 50MB are enough storage space for a full time student. Need to
unload; need the funds! Extremely brand new; nothing wrong with the
HD. Approximately 100+- hours of use in the past 6+- months!
Check it out (newer model: approx. 3.5" dia. not the old 5.25" dia.
disk)! Retailed price $695.95. Bought for $550.00. Will sell at
$450.00 (negotiable).
Prices become VERY negotiable for both packages!

I don't know what you are talking about, but some of the best looking
ST mags is produced on an ST. The list includes german TOS and the
the brand new danish ST mag 'STT forum'. There is also the DMC show-off

All these mags. are produced on ST/TT with calamus and then photoset.

I just received my copy of the MACE (Midlands Atari Computer Enthusiasts)
Newsletter in the mail yesterday, and one of the articles goes as
follows:
"ATARI BACK IN KEYBOARD - Atari is back advertising in Keyboard
magazine, the most widely read professional musician's magazine in the
country. In the August issue (with Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman oyn the
cover), Atari has taken co-op ads with C-Lab (Notator, Creator) and Dr. T
(numerous editor/librarians and sequencers). The Atari logo is large and
clearly seen in both ads. There will be an Atari/Dr. T ad in Electronic
Musician this month as well. Bob Brodie of Atari says, "We've also done
similar things in PC-related magazines with some of our Portfolio
developers."
It's good to see that Atari is trying to continue to build its reputation
as one of the foremost computers on the market for MIDI music.
BTW, if you wish to get a subscription to the MACE Newsletter, just send
$10 US to:
Roy Barr, Editor
780 Dove Point Drive
Orangeburg, SC 29115
They also make mention that the CDAR505 will be shipped in September, and
FSM GDOS will be shipped around Oct. 1 (I'll believe it when I see it!).
Unfortunately for the CDAR505, "it won't even work on an ST machine as
shipped. Instead of having the ACSI/DMA port and a SCSI port as
announced, it will have only the 'pure SCSI' port that is the industry
standard. It'll plug right into a TT or a MAC, or any computer that has
a SCSI host adaptor. So ST owners will need to use an ICD or other host
unit to access the CD player."

Yeah. I went to the dreadful Berklee College of Music, which was the same
deal. The reason is this: educational discounts. At Berklee we ended up with
a LOT of utter crap - Macs, Performer, Kurzweil 250's (!) - because it was
extremely cheap for the school.
So far, the ST has been the most appealing to the serious pro user. I guess
Atari feels that since there's no competition there, they don't need to
advertise. I don't agree with them.
> Yes, I know Atari "owns" the MIDI market... but someone seems to have

I've noticed that the U.S. is a bit behind the rest of the world in this
respect. I wouldn't worry about it. I don't really care how many Ataris are
sold as long as the user base remains large enough that the software houses
keep developing for it, and the best MIDI software is still Atari-exclusive.
So far, that has been the case, and it looks like it will stay that way.
