I agree with Bill and Steve...GEM-based interfaces are fancier and "easier"
to use....BUT the command-line is MUCH MUCH MORE powerful (especially when
you do programming, as Bill mentioned)...it really saves time.
IMHO the command line is meant for advanced users, while the GEM interface
makes life easier for newcomers. Of course, the best of all is a combination
of these two (as Steve mantioned), and this is the reason Gemini is a
permanent auto-start program in my booting partition - yes, I've paid my
registration fee 8*) -
e.g. IMHO it's easier (and faster) to type:
ls *.o *.bak
or cp *.c *.h d:\
than invoking the corresponding commands using the mouse
in a graphic-shell like Gemini or Neodesk.
On the other hand, it is convenient to have visual contact with
almost all the operations and/or commands that are available to
you at all times...and that's the strongest point of a GUI.
BUT once you are familiar with the commands, CLI is defenitly
more (much more) efficient (MHO)
Just my 2 cents...

Subject: Atari ST Games 4 Sale
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Once again, I need to purge my Atari ST game collection. All
prices are firm, unless you have a documented source that is
cheaper; I think these prices are low enough as it is. If you
have questions on a game, give me a call.
All games require, as far as I know, a color monitor. Some are
installable to hard disk, and some may require a joystick (I
recommend the Epyx joystick for the Amiga - very responsive).
I will try to take the first response on all of these, whether
it is phone or e-mail. I have not had bad experiences with
personal checks, so those are fine, but please don't be the
first to make me mad.
Prices are based partly on entertainment value, partly on
original price.
All games are originals, and include complete documentation.
Some with boxes, no warranty cards. As always, games are
first come, first serve. Unless noted, all games require a
color monitor. All prices include shipping (which I find to
run about $1.50 + $.25/game).
I don't read this newsgroup, so please, no posts to comp.sys.
atari.st for me. If you must get ahold of me, call me in
the evening at home and leave a message.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Breach 2 - Wargame with some role-playing aspects. Very colorful,
build-your-own scenario builder, a classic in my mind.
Can install to HD.
$16
Empire - Classic wargame, play against the computer or against
someone else. Units include ships, air, tanks, infantry.
Has a "build-your-own world" editor. HD installable.
$16
Wargame Construction Set - Didn't get to play with this much, but
it looks interesting. Can create a wide variety of
situations, with air units, different ground units.
Very colorful. Installable to HD.
$8
StarFleet I - The old Star Trek game revamped for a graphic
interface. Suprisingly fun for an old game. There are
some new twists, and the mouse interface is good. HD.
$12
Paladin - Medival version of Breach 2, earlier generation of the
same system. While not as slick, it is still a lot of
fun. HD installable, and has a build your own editor.
$12
Midwinter - You are one of 31 people on an ice-bound island
which has erupted into war. Control hang-gliders,
various snowcats, or ski your way over the landscape.
A seriously good way to eat up your time. Boxed.
$16
Sim City - Another classic. You are a city planner, and need to
spend your money wisely. Zone areas, build mass transit
and roads, deal with prehistoric creatures trashing your
city. Lots 'o' fun. HD installable, includes extra cities
disk. Boxed.
$16
Risk - The classic board game, licensed by Parker Bros. All sorts
of options, can play with up to six computer/human players.
My 18 year old nephew played this constantly when he stayed
with us last summer.
$12
Hardball -
Mean 18 -
Test Drive - These were all part of a single package, and so share
a single rulebook. Test Drive has a bad startup disk, so
I'm not selling it. I will throw it in with the other two,
and Accolade will replace it for you (I don't want to spend
the time). Hardball is baseball, Mean 18 is golf. OK games,
a little dated. $8 if you want one, the pair for $16 and
you get Test Drive too.
$8/$16
Shark Attack - Gregg Norman's golf simulator. There's a lot to
this, much more indepth than Mean 18, and better graphics.
Boxed.
$12
RoadWars - Arcade game. *Not* a Car Wars clone! Drive along and
blow stuff up. Boxed
$8
Knight Orc - Text adventure. Boxed.
$8
Zak McKraken - Lucasfilms Cinemaware. Kind of a text adventure,
but not really. Pretty funny in places. HD install,
lots of entertaining extra stuff.
$8
Dr. T's MT-32 editor/lib - Professional quality editor librarian,
I don't have an MT-32 anymore, so out it goes. Has a
backup disk. This was originally more than $100 retail.
$16

Subject: MEGA STE ROMs on MEGA ST
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Hi folks,
I've seen a couple of questions about fitting Mega STE ROMs into a Mega ST.
Here's a description how to add extra ROM space to a Mega, at the same adress
where it's in the STE. It can be used for ROM-Disks or even be booted from.
The TOS2.05 will NOT run with this little hack, because the Mega doesn't have
the STE's hardware. Maybe somebody can patch the 2.05, then I don't see why
it couldn't run on Megas with this hack.
Although Mega and Mega STE have 256K ROM space, the Mega uses only the first
192K,
leaving 64K unused. That's because the top 64K are used for all the I/O
chips. So the OS-ROM was moved from $FC0000 to $E00000 leaving enough
space for expansion. To fit a 256K ROM into a Mega, adress lines A20-A23
must be decoded to generate a chip-select. To make the CPU recognize the
new ROM, a DTACK signal has to be generated, too. The diode (1N4148)
makes the DTACK open collector. The /CS signal goes to the ROM /CS input,
if you use an EPROM, tie /OE and /CS together. On Reset, the Mega will still
boot from the old TOS, however. If it is to boot from the new ROMs at adress
$E00000, remove the old OS-ROMs, and connect their /CS signal (or use GLUE's
select for the lowest ROM) to the boot input, otherwise tie that input high.
The chips are a 74LS00 and 74LS30. They fit on a small circuit board,
and you can get the supply voltage from any TTL chip in the Mega.
All lines (except VCC , /CS and "boot_input") can be soldered to the CPU
directly, or via the connector.
If EPROMS are used instead of the OS-ROM, they don`t fit into the 28 pin
sockets. The pinout is slightly different, too. You might want to use a
32 pin socket (for the EPROM) and plug it into a 28 pin socket and cut the
appropriate pins on the top socket instead of the EPROM (makes programming them
a hassle ;-) then do the rewiring (ROM has an address line on the pin where the
EPROM has a select line). If anyone is interested in this, I can post how
to do this.

To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I'm having a problem displaying background pics of Degas Elite
files in Neodesk.
As an example, I put one of the pics on atari.archive of the atari
computers in the root directory. Neodesk loaded the pic, but instead
of the color mapping it should have had, I got a kind of psychedelic
color rendition of the thing, like when you try to view a pic that
uses 16 colors and you try to display it with 4.
I tried changing the color settings in the control panel to the ones
that the pic had, but that didn't work.
Is this because you have a larger palette in Degas than you have in the
control panel?

To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I have an old 1040STf (1986) that I upgraded to 4 megs using the
JRI SIMM board. The only "problem" I had is that you have to remove
the top of the video shifter can and now you can see some noise on
the monitor when the data bus is chugging. When I get motivated to
open it up again (or is that if?) I'm going to put some shielding
over the top of the video shifter can to fix this, but it's not
enough of a problem to motivate me.
Of course, this was done by putting the SIMMS on a separate board.

Steinberg could fix the code so the key worked on 16 MHz cards too or find

IMHO Windows could run in NEGATIVE time and still suck. About 90% of my
gripes with this system have nothing to do with performance. I guess we
have Apple to thank for this, since Microsoft was surely FORCED to use some
of the more lame-brained design concepts in the package (to make it "lawsuit

>Sigh. Ever heard of MIDI, Mike?
2 or 3 years ago (Hell, maybe even one!), I would have agreed with this.
Atari was (and is to a lesser extent now) THE machine to own for MIDI
use. The built in ports (but not MIDI thru) and a wealth of relatively
inexpensive software made it very attractive for this and many professionals
use Ataris exclusively.
Well, that has changed. There are now many more MIDI adaptors and a lot
of software available for the Mac and PC clones. Recently, I had the chance
to talk to the local MIDI guru at Mannys in Manhattan (buying new guitar)
and he told me that while he still sells an occasional ST for MIDI most people
are buying Macs now. This is coming from one of the biggest music stores
in Manhattan and they USED TO sell lots of STs. If Atari is starting to
bog down in that market too, then what else is there?
Regards,
Chris

Great to hear it Richard! Thank God, you're finally moving away from the Atari
ST platform. Perhaps that means that we won't have to read any more of your
manic/depressive editorials in ST Report?
You DO intend to quit publishing the damn thing, don't you?
