I am having trouble adding a second hard drive to my 520ST. I
have a Berkely BMS host adapter with an Adaptec 5000 (4 MFM ports) SCSI
card. My first drive is logical unit 0 and has always booted/worked
fine. I added a second drive as LUN 1; the supra software lets me
format and partition it OK but I can't get it to be recognized as having
partitions F, G, and H when I boot up. (Icons are there, but the driver
doesn't recogize those drives; ie. DRVBITS doesn't have them in it.) My
first drive has C, D, and E. Any help on how to get my second SCSI 0,
LUN 1, drive to have partitions F, G, and H would be greatly
appreciated.

As far as I know, you are out of luck. You need the newer 128 kByte MAC boot
ROMs to run system 6.0.x. To the best of my knowledge, Aladin never supported
the 128 kB ROMs. Thus, Aladin is pretty obsolete nowadays. You should consider
to dump the Aladin and get Gadget`s Spectre GCR.

Okay, enlighten us, which computers are out there that are less expensive
than Atari computers, and are far more capable.
Start off with the $349 Atari STE 512K. (Current price, Toad computers)
I find this fair, as most people have 8MHZ machines. An STE with blitter
chip, stereo 50Khz sound, Midi ports, SIMM, Instant boot, 640x400 mono.
Next, step up to Mega STE1 for $999. 16Mhz with cache, 68881 socket,
VME card slot, Built in HD ready, and all the previous model's features.
L'ets stop here temporarily. (Please, no remarks in the "AH! you know
the TT doesnt have a chance in such a discussion" sense.) We can discuss
the TT line after, thats all. Or is the TT the only thing you can pick on?

starter kits that came with the Amiga 520 RF/color composite adapter,

with all manuals, disks, original packaging, cables, etc. I will throw in
a copy of "Amiga for Beginners" by Abacus Books, a few European mags, and
Gauntlet II. I'll also include the original reciept for everything so

remaining warranty period.

Maxtor 7120SR hard drive. 125MB, 3.5 inch SCSI embedded drive. Data
transfer rate of 960K/s @ 21ms. Manufacture date of 9/28/91. This
drive has seen little use! I bought it in November to replace an ailing
drive on my BBS. Now that I've taken down my BBS, I'd like to sell the
drive. It's a low-profile (1 inch high) drive. Nice and quiet, and
FAST! Paid $380 for it. Note that you have about 9 months left on the
warranty! I will include a copy of the original sales slip so you can take
advantage of said warranty (if you need to).

Magnavox RGB Monitor 80. This monitor accepts both digital RGB and
color composite signals, and has a front switch so you can go between
them on the fly. Looks to be about a 13 inch screen. Has sound capability
(RCA jack input). In very good condition. I used this monitor in
composite mode on my Amiga until I got an analog RGB monitor for it. You
can hook up such things as an IBM computer (with CGA card), VCR, Nintendo,
Atari XL/XE and Commodore 64/128. Owner's manual is included so you can
make specialty cables for the RGB port.

BMI monochrome monitor. A little old, but works just fine. Green
phosphor display, no sound. Ideal for use on older computers like
the Apple II series (which did not require sound). RCA jack for video
input.

Zenith Data Systems 2400 baud modem. Only used a few hours. This is
a "standard" modem, with Hayes compatibility and a size that fits easily
under a telephone. Has the standard 8 LEDs on the front, with power
switch on back. Includes manual.

Microcom AX/2400C modem. This is a 2400 baud modem featuring MNP
levels 1-5. Microcom invented MNP, and now you can have a real Microcom
modem! It's been on my BBS for about 3 months, but since I don't run a
BBS anymore, I'd like to sell this modem. It's got lots of dip switches
to set just about everything. Both asynchronous and syncronous operation
with a front switch. There is also a "talk/data" button on the front,
along with 7 LEDs. Owner's manual and original packaging included. This
modem features both full Hayes compatibility and Microcom's own protocol.

I have to agree with all the ST gripes so far. Here are a few suggestions.
1) Atari has to out the idea that buss architectures make a computer
more expensive where it belongs, in the garbage. The added expense to
hack something to expand a non-expandable" machine is at least triple.
Look at the difference between internal and externa PC harware, for
instance.
2) I do not mind TOS in ROM (Well, I guess I mind TOS no matter where it
is!) But it is a bit intimidating to upgrade to those out there who are
techno phobes, or expensive tohave a dealer do. So here are two
suggestions.
a) put the TOS chips under a removable cover on a removale card.
Then upgrading is just a matter of slipping in a card. A piece of
circuitboar of this lack of complexity would only add at most a few buck
to the cost, and make the whole project more pallatable for many. Also,
it would alow a user to ugrade TOS without voiding their warranty (Is
Atari the only company left with a lame ass "The users are too stupid to
be allowed to open their computer" policy?).
b) make TOS modular, So that to upgrade only bits and pieces, a
disk with patches could be used as a boot disk as well as the ROM, and
then the OS could be ugraded on disk until the user buys the ROMS, sorta
the way the macOS is (sorta). Imagine how much easier somethig like
neodesk would be to program. Or replacement VDI driver, QuickST, etc..
3) Kill the Tramiels (sorry, I couldn't resist :) )
4) Make the cartidge port read/write, with a much bigger data bus. Have
a software switch for compatibility.
5) Just use a better Power Supply. This is just plain bad engineering,
especially when there is no bus, causing expansion hacks to have to draw
inordinate amounts of power, or have ungainly external supplies.
6) Get the damn 24-bit VDI ot the damn door. What time is it? 1992?
7) include the new PDS in the notebook on all ST/TTs
All this should have been done ages ago, so I doubt it will be done now,
but it is nice to dream

The fact is, you can't make claims about AMIGA DOS when it comes to running
UNIX applications of some weight like X-Windows under AMIGA DOS. You can't.
You need a fundamentally different software architecture to take advantage
of UNIX. Thats why people buy UNIX to run UNIX applications.

and besides that you left out a critical point...depending on what CPU you
run a particular core program on, it could be slower or faster.
There is NOW WAY you can support that claim given the incredibly huge
variety of computers and software combinations out there.

But here your comparing hardware to software, your bus to Postscript. The
NuBUS backplane on the next is quite fast, very fast. And not only that,
it doesn't have the double memory architecture the ZORRO III bus has to
negotiate between slow and fast RAM. The NeXT simply blows information
were it wills accross the bus. I know the handshaking for cards and
protocol is much simpler on the NeXT machine.
I don't know the exact specs for the NeXT backplane, but I bet they are
truly awesome indeed.

I didn't post it as a ST rebuke, you simply made points that I feel were
very misleading about AMIGA DOS and the NeXT system capabilities.

I killed my ST! ;-{ But I may be able to revive it if I can find a place that
sell replacement chips. It died when I upgraded from 2.5 meg to 4.0 Meg. Any

I have an HP DeskJet 500 (upgraded from the original DeskJet) and I love
it! It is quiet, reasonably fast, and has beautiful output. The output
compares favorably to my HP LaserJet III at work. (You have to look
real, real close to see the difference.) I don't use Tex or Ghostscript
but do use GDOS (actually G+PLUS), primarily with Easy-Draw (GEM
Metafiles) and Word-Up.
Be aware of a couple of things: 1) The printout *is sensitive* to
the paper stock that you use. Some paper will give really crummy
printouts and on others you could swear you had a laser printer. 2)
With GDOS fonts, the driver is very important. For most of my GDOS
programs I use the Migraph driver with excellent results. However,
the Word-Up fonts print better with the original Neocept TurboJet driver.
I have never regretted buying this (or the original) printer. I have
recommended it to many friends and not one has been unhappy with it. Go
for it!

I don't know much about the DJ500, but the Canon Bubble Jets are also NLQ
(Near LASER Quality) 360dpi and all that, totally silent, and the ink is
DRY as soon as the paper comes out of the printer.
But the BJ10ex does take 10 minutes to print a page of graphics (until I get
my hands on a faster driver).

I don't think the Spectre GCR warrants a complete seperate group...yet.
Right now, if your at all serious about the Spectre GCR your on the MAC
group in rn, not in comp.sys.atari.st.
However, if Mr. Small delivers on his promise of a well designed hardware
accelerator board for current ST owners, the capabilities of such a board might
warrant a comp.sys.atari.sst group.
I hope Mr. Small gets the MEGA STE version out quickly, I have my check
waiting...

First of all thank you for the quick respond to my request on my problems
concerning UNIXMODE and MiNT.
Secondly I have some questions on the Minix file-system:
- Is it true that the filename-length is restricted to 14 chars?
- Is the contens of mfs0541.zoo from aa suitable to the effort
of creating a Minix-like file-system and
- if it is suitable, do I need any additional sources for this purpose?
The most interesting thing for me to hear certainly was the information that
someone is working on an AUTO folder program as a realization of the
UNIXMODE. I'd like to know more about that...
Finally, if I try to write an appropriate file-system on my own, would it be
sensible to use the file `tosfs.c' from the MINIX sources as an idea and

Subject: Wanted: Hard disk for use with 1040ST

I would like to finish a project that I started on the Atari 1040ST. I have
a friend here at work that has an STe that I can use but he doesn't have a
spare hard disk.
I would love to go back to work on the project, but I can't afford the
$450 that retailers have been happy to charge me.
If you have an Atari drive that you've had sitting under-utilized and you
would like to turn into cash (or a good quality check), please repond via
