For Sale: Atari Mega2, SC1224 color monitor, MegaFile 30 MB hard drive.

My Mega2 is sitting in the local dealer's shop - brain dead. It's
going to cost me $200 to put in a complete new motherboard, but I'd
just as soon we parted ways. Consequently, make me an offer on the
pieces or the whole system, with or without the new motherboard,
whatever combination you desire. It's not worth anything to me now
and I could use a little Christmas cash, so all offers considered.

Includes:

Mega2 ST
SC1224 Color monitor
MegaFile 30 MB hard drive
Various SW including Falcon, KQuest III, Revolver

No, I do not think that anyone could validly claim that their SCSI drivers
would work with every single peripheral under the sun.
The SCSI device drivers supplied with ASV will support disks, tapes and
network (Nodem) devices that conform to the SCSI-I/II specification.
We have come across a few devices that don't strictly conform .
Obviously for a generic device driver one could not support every peculiar
feature that a device may have.

>Can it handle any make or brand of WORM drive?
>Can it handle the Sony 5.25 SMO optical read/write drive? Or the
>newer Sony 3.5 SMO optical drive?

No, as far as I know a driver is not supplied for CD-ROM or WORM devices.

>Or the new Digital Audio Tape 1.3/2.2 GIGABYTE tape drives?

Yes, if it behaves the same as a tape streamer.

>these are all SCSI devices, special ASV device drivers would be
>required for each. and then the question becomes, who is going
>to provide these device drivers? Heck, companies such as Word Perfect

>device drivers? I think not!!

I don't see why the authors of Word Perfect need to write device drivers.
Surely, only suppliers of third party devices that are not disk or tape
need to posiibley supply a device driver.

>Can an ordinary ASV developer write his own drivers?

Yes, if he purchases the DDI/DKI (Device Driver Interface / Device Kernel
Interface) for the Motorola 68000 Processor family from Prentice Hall and
reads the Atari release notes for ASV.

>Well, if the kernal is like most AT&T
>kernals you have to rebuild the entire kernal to add new device
>drivers. Hence you need source code to the entire ASV kernal,
>which I don't think AT&T would Atari Corp to give out for free!!

Utter rubbish! You do not need access to source code to write device drivers.
However, it does make it easier when you have access to other device drivers
to use as examples, but it is not impossible. In fact quite a few of our
customers have added device drivers to their kernel which is shipped in binary
format only.
To add a device driver to ASV simply requires re-linking the kernel not
rebuilding it. If the driver is a standard one, (disk, tape, floppy, parallel
port, serial i/o, ...) the autoconfiguration software will automatically add
the new driver. i.e. if you plug in a SCSI tape device the software will
auto-magically relink your kernel with the SCSI tape driver.

Looking at your postings, I have found it quite incredible that you
have had the nerve to comment about a product that you have never seen let
alone used. As the original thread of this usenet discussion was about owners
of ASV, I guess that leaves you out from further constructive comment.

May I suggest that for those with physical disabilities such an ability is
very important. Some people cannot use their hands (at least not well) -
for such people typewriters are poor ergonomic designs indeed. Mice sometimes
are easier for such persons to use.

And, who are we to say what is most comfortable for someone else anyway - you
sound like a software designer for IBM (or is that Apple) :-) :-) :-)....

I noticed you wre having some trouble with a Dungeon Master level. I have the
Amiga version, but I understand the game is the same on all platforms (a friend
of mine has an AppleII GS and the version of DM he had was identical as far as
the layout was concerned). I have a "hint book" which is unfortunately not
right in front of me. I will try to get ahold of it and see if I can answer
your question. Since I just got on this list, what is it you need to know?

There are tons of secret doors and stairways all over the place

It's amazing how much is really down there, I still get confused about

In the UK, you can get bubble-jet drivers (including HP Deskjet Plus and
500) from the distrubutors of Calligrapher, Working Title. What's more,
they're completely free.

I realise that this probably doesn't help you, Chris, since you're not in the
UK, but you may be able to get them from the US distributor of Calligrapher.
(Note that while the drivers are free, they are _not_ public domain)

Well I am not a hardware expert, but I do know that the BLiTTER has been
installed in all the new machines, that includes the regular STE's, the
Mega STE's, and the TT. (only the last one is a 68030, the others are the
usual 68000, with the Mega STE with a 16 MHz CPU...)

I believe that the BLiTTER is automatically utilized by GEM programs
and such (somone else comment, I don't know the specifics), I have seen it
on the Mega STE and the windows really do fly open and shut, maybe this is
also because of the 16 MHz clock speed... Anyway I'm SURE someone else
knows about this more specifically. :-)

Also thanks for your 'peace' comments, it is nice to see someone who
isn't violently slamming other computers or mega-praising their own, all
computers have advantages and disadvantages...

Actually, this has already been done, but I have no idea *which*
one of the gobs of TSR's and utilities that I have running does it. I've
got *something* that will show me the character set if I hit the INSERT
key while in the file selector. I am using UIS III on my ST but I am not
sure if it is the nice culprit giving me the character set.
Durned if I am going to break out all the manuals and start trying
to isolate which utility is providing this service, but it does work. You
can even construct the top or bottom half of "Bob" in your file name with
this thing.
Unfortunately, this only shows up in the file selector box.

I've bought INTERLINK when I needed a terminal program. I soon realized
some small bugs which made it not very usefull for me. One of them was
a wrong behaviour when using the EVE editor on VAX/VMS 5.x . I then
became aware of UNITERM, which I'm using now. I recommend UNITERM as
the best terminal program I've ever seen.

Recently another terminal program (OPTERM05) has been posted to
comp.binaries.atari.st , but I didn't check it.

This is great. Here we have a guy who claims to have ten years
experience programming under Unix, calling TeX, nroff/troff, Gnu
C obscure pd stuff. You can't buy humour this good.
One other question, Richard. Do you know what compiler ships

And, Richard, do you know what the GNU project people think about apple ?
Infact, they like apple so much that they promise NOT to support apple
unix in their software distributions.
