Anyone know where to find a C++ compiler for the ST? I've been working
with C++ on PC's for a while and badly want to be able to use the ST
with a C++ compiler. Has GCC++ been ported yet, if so where do I find it?
Also, if it has been ported, does it run under MiNT? (And where do I find
MiNT!)
There seems to be trouble with the computer I'm using here, but I have
received answer from outta space. So just go ahead and mail me
I *love* my ST!(

The Data Diet Demo has just been posted to the atari.archive.umich.edu ftp site.
Data Diet is the Atari REALTIME compression program. Download this
demo of Data Diet and trim the fat from your data storage system.
This Data Diet Demo really works! With this demo you can put your
.DOC files on a diet and see for yourself. Don't buy another hard
disk! [Floppy disk users will require a RAMdisk.]

Strange, I got a very positive impression from a stack of UK ST magazines
(july aug sept issues). Some Atari Inc. gripes, but overall lots of new
products and interest.

You might try the Okami shell (from atari.archive). It is very nice, but
you have to try to figure it out (unless you can read German). It is not
to hard, and there is some minimal english documentation. It is like gulam
in that it is just a shell, not a complete OS replacement.

I am very very happy with Prospero C. You might (being a unix guy) try out
gcc from atari.archive.

Agree, but I don't think we can adapt the Amiga blitter for the ST, can we?
I am willing to give it a try if someone can mail *all* details of the
(other 68K computer :-)-blitter to me. It may be worth an attempt, just
for the fun of it...

Could someone who attends WAACE this weekend post if Dave Small
had the new MegaTalk board for sale there? MegaTalk supposedly
has a true Apple SCSI port so that you can hook up ANY Mac
SCSI hardware device to it and run it under Spectre GCR.
sounds really great, but there no news about the MegaTalk
on Genie.
so, has anyone seen it? I would like to buy one for my
Mega st!!

Hey folks,
A buddy of mine just came back from a summer in England with an
armload of ST mags. After reading them all, I must say I envy those folks.
Lots and lots of neat ST hardware and software. Some notables that jumped
out at me:
Sun style optical mice, for you real masochists
A memory board that allows one to use SIMMs in any ST (!)
Many monitor options, including a full page mono.
Lots of scanners and professional DTP utilities.
About a zillion great looking games, including a completely
rewritten Populous 2.
I also noticed that hard disks seem to be VERY expensive, with the ICD
FaST products being very popular. Neodesk and the Codehead suite seem to
be tops in their class (nice to know us yanks are good for something). Dave
Small and the Spectre GCR are also getting lots of attention (several of the
mags have rather tongue-in-cheek recommendations for mac software). Each of
the magazines came with a disk. They all contained at least one demo of a
commerical game, and lots of other goodies including source code for various
graphic thingies, Uniterm (2.0c, which is billed as "hot out of the programmers
hands", sheesh), and the full commercial version of TCB Soundtracker with docs.
Also, to give the readers something to assemble the included source with,
Devpack v1 is included on one of the disks. All in all, I am impressed at the
quality of the mags. They are about 70% game oriented (thats ok, I play games
about 70% of the time :-), the rest being programming tutorials and
professional reviews/tutorials. I know Sideline Software in Florida offers
stateside subscriptions to these magazines. After seeing a bunch of them, I
just might try one out for a year (kind of expensive, with the disk and all).
Anyway, for those bemoaning the lack of "glossy" mags for the ST, you need only
call SS's 1-800 number.
I might have to order one of those memory boards also. An unpopulated one
costs 59 pounds. SIMMS seem to be cheaper here also.
