To everyone out there looking into LaserJet III (&IIIp), they are great! They
produce output better than most 600dpi printers. They will work with virtually
any of the older LaserJet drivers. You will, however, NEED more memory to use
either Calamus or PageStream. I have 3megs in mine, and I have never had a
problem with memory. When I bought it it had only 1meg, and neither Calamus nor
PageStream would print a full page at highest quality. I bought a second party
memory card with 2megs for $180, it works fine, and 1meg from HP is $300. So I
recomend second party add-ons.

Get your facts straight.
There are indeed three new notebook macs comeing out, but none of them
is a pen based machine. They are all variations on the same basic
notbook design.
The new 68040 machines are the Quadra 600? and the 900, and they are
really for massive servers mopre than desktop maschines and are in tower
cases.
The new classic is called the classic/030, or 030/classic.
nice machines, but overpriced, sorta like atari.

I just bought an el-cheapo ST520 and I have some questions.
+ I have an original atari 360K drive. Can this drive read
Macintosh or PC disks, or do I have to invest in a better drive?
+ How can I upgrade the RAM? Do I have to buy a special board and
fiddle with the hardware to get beyond 1M?
+ What processor upgrades are there available? I have heard of the
SST board. Can I install it without pain in my ST?

As both the Atari MEGA STE and the TT has build in option for use
of HIGH DENSITY floppy disk drives in the operating system and a
possibility to turn this on by moving a DIP switch I have the
following question:
- When will Atari release a 16 MHz version of th WD-1772 FDC
that will read/write HD disks without heating up to much
- When will a HD drive that fits in the ST drive slot be available
I have tried other drives, but the front from the ST drive won't
fit (the button is fittet in another way etc etc etc...)
I know other companies can deliver FDC that manange HD drives, but
that stills leaves us with the last problem.....

Be sure not to delete any trailing spaces after each line, and be careful
not to exceed 1024 bytes (each lines gets a CRLF appended in ST memory on
read). That 1024 limit is not for TOS 1.4 but for earlier versions. TOS
1.4 and above upped it to 4098. But some programs will barf if the shell-
put/get buffer is too large.

Oh no, here we go again. These figures look a lot like Zoo 2.0 compression
for the zoo files. To get high compression mode for Zoo 2.1, don't forget
to use the 'h' flag on the command line. Then Zoo will come real close to
lharc.
The biggest advantage of zoo is: I've got it for MINIX, for UNIX of many
flavors, for DOS, and for TOS. (Maybe I'll even have a CP/M version one
day). And the zoo versions are all compatible.
Also zoo makes a fine archivin tool, allowing me to put comments for the
generated archive and/or the separate files into the archive, allowing for
generations (i.e. several versions of one file), and lots of goodies. It
can archive full pathnames and for TOS, recursively collect files. So,
what more can one want?
Now, please try that 'h' option and test again.

Did you consider the fact that GIF pictures are already Lempel-Ziv
compressed? This does signal a shortfall in the ZOO code, however, if the
finding is correct - ZOO should be able to simply STORE a file if it
can't compress it...
But I'll be sticking with ZOO for now - ZOO is already installed
here at UCSD, and LHArc isn't.

Maybe the "-" is your problem. I'm also using Mercury's RMail here, and one
group is called "sub.newusers.questions". I do not have any problems with

Does anyone know of a decent source for good monochrome 640x400 images
(.GIF, Degas, .IMG, whatever) that would be suitable for background pictures
on my desktop? I've got this really great rendition of the cover from
Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene album, but I'm getting a little sick of it...

I have decided that I have had it with not being able to find any software
for my beloved 1040STE!!!
I DO NOT WANT TO GET RID OF MY STE!!! I DO WANT to be be able to buy some of
the more popular software packages (I.e. Quicken, Tobias' MYM etc..) and
use them in addition to the stuff I now know and love on my STE (like
Flash, GNU-C,...) so I am looking at buying an MS-DOS Emulator.
NO, I don't want to start a "don't buy an Emulator, buy a cheap IBM"
thread hear, I can't afford 600-1000 dollars to get a decent IBM with HD,
plus I don't have the room for two systems.
SO---can all of you emulator users out there give me a 'lessons learned'?
Specifically, relative merits, problems of the emulator you are using?
I am interested mostly in speed of use for common MS-DOS programs like
Work Processors, Financial and Data-Base stuff, not in running heavy
graphics oriented stuff like windows etc..
What is the best MS-DOS emulator for my money, one that will work with my
STE and ICD based hard-drive? I don't mind a solder-in board, so
installation is not one of the criterion I am too worried about, more
compatibility and speed.

gulam is just a shell, not an operating system. MiNT, on the other
hand, is just an operating system, not a shell. MiNT extends GEMDOS so
that some new features (multitasking, pipes, job control, and many
more) are available; but there's no particular shell that *must* go
with it. You can use gulam with MiNT (I do, sometimes), or you can use
a shell like bash or ksh that can take advantage of MiNT features.
minix is another animal entirely; it's a new operating system that
replaces TOS completely, rather than providing extensions for TOS. It
comes with a clone of the standard Unix shell sh (which isn't very
nice for interactive use), and with a lot of nice utilities. Note that
you cannot run existing TOS programs under minix.
So which is best? It depends on what you want. You didn't really say
what you disliked about gulam. It may be that another shell running
under just TOS (e.g. GEMINI, which is a very nice one) may satisfy
your needs. If you want multitasking, job control, and pipes, get MiNT
and add bash, ksh, and/or mgr. If you want to chuck it all and start
all over, you may want to try minix; give MiNT a try first, though.

PS: you also mentioned dissatisfaction with your C compiler. Try gcc:
it's free, and it's one of the best C compilers available.

very nice and I am considering buying it. A few questions first though:
Is it one of the best DTP programs for the ST? The best?

How much is it? Is there any place where I can buy it? Address? Phone?

PageStream (PgS) is now at version 1.2, and is one of the best dtp packages
out. i t now supports EPS clip art as well.
I own both it and Calamus 1.09N (which hasn't been updated this year) and well
some prefer Calamus I think that PgS is easier to learn and to use.
There is a magazine (diskzine or somesuch) called RADICAL TYPE to support
the Atari ST and the Amiga version of PgS.
Softlogic publishes PGS and is an American Company in St. Louis MI.
It uses Adobe Type I fonts now as well as PgS propreitary fonts.
what else? well it works well with my Panasonic KXP4450 laser printer.
I highly recommend PgS and Softlogic.

I don't need to be convinced that TurboST is faster - that's obvious. I'm not
convinced that TurboST implements all calls _exactly_ as Atari intends them
to be. (I heard that Gemini, for one, does not work correctly with TurboST).

Plexus Productions TeX/Metafont Release v2.0 (P~D TeX v2.0)
I have recently complied all the TeX and Metafont stuff I could
get my hands on into a coherent and well formed distribution. The system
is available on about 24 double-sided disks for the Atari ST. It included:
TeX 2.9 (3.1 would've been nice but I could get little support from
the author)
this included Plain tex, LaTeX, PicTeX (pictures), MuTeX (music),
Initex, texinfo, 'A Gentle Introduction to TeX' (a good starter
manual), BibTex, Tex\Latex\Pictex\Bibtex etc input files.
TeX Draw which allows you to WYSIWYG draw and output the picture
in Latex, Pictex format.
Competent dvi viewers and printers including utilities and fonts
and a DVI to Postscript converter
Metafont with complete font sources for CM, AMS Euler and Cyrilic,
LaTeX, MuTeX, Wasy and Pandora fonts. also inimf and other
utility files
Ten disks filled with fonts
all files are unarced and properly foldered. I am including a hardcopy
laser printed copy of 'A Gentle Introduction to TeX' and well as relevant
DVI, etc docs. I al also including a manual describing the files and
which ones you need to install for particular requirements.
The distribution is available for $75 Canadian. This pays for the disks
(24 of so) and a bit for the time it took to compile the distribution.

The demos are in 50Hz. My monitor rolled as well when I first bought it.
Basically, you have to adust it so it's stable for both 50Hz and 60Hz.
