1040st with 1 meg of ram, TOS 1.0. Mouse and drisk drive have worked
flawlessly for years, same with the monitor.

I'm asked ONLY $400. (The cheapest I HAVE seen on here)

I'll pay 1/2 for shipping.

Aghast - definition: frightened, horrified.

Why would seeing lots of Atari staffers scare you? Were you afraid
that if there was some disaster that a large portion of their man-
power would be eliminated?

It was XFacemaker2, by a 3rd party, not "Atari's own version". One
weird thing about the Motif-based UI running on the Unix TTs that both
Charles Johnson and I noticed was the mouse tracking. It seemed both
sluggish and jumpy at the same time (even after disabling some running
processes). We didn't find out why, but it was definitely different
from normal GEM mouse tracking feel.

Regarding MultiGEM:

What is their upgrade policy that is second to none? I'm curious because
Paradigm has been putting out 3 updates a year to our Omni-Banker ST
universal MIDI librarian, since it was introduced in 1987. Support has
grown from 30 some instruments to over 280 devices (more than any other
librarian product, running on any computer), plus loads of new features,
and we've never charged anything more than a nominal shipping fee.

[Also, Rimik Enterprises is not a "European Company", it's a US developer
(Richard Betson) who is importing a product from Germany, developed by
PAM Soft.]

I too am frequently (although not uniformly) impressed with German/UK
software developers. But are you implying that US developers are any
less hard working?

Once again, I'm confused. "Laughing all the way to the bank" generally
has a negative connotation to it. Do you feel that they were taking
advantage of people, or ripping them off in some way? Or have you just
not said what you meant (or meant what you said)?

> Atari was there in full force, they supported vendors probably for the

There was definitely strong Atari support, however, this was far from the
"first time" they have supplied lots of machines for developer booths.
There were certainly more TTs and 19" monitors there than I've ever seen
in one place before. I remember going to the Toronto show back in May,
and being disappointed that there wasn't a single 19"
monitor in sight.
An impressive showing. Hopefully, Atari will feel that it was worth the
effort.

As Greg Lindahl pointed out (in private e-mail) this jumpiness is
common behavior for X-based workstations. In case anyone was con-
fused, my "weirdness" comment was in comparison to tracking in GEM.
I suppose this is an apples/oranges thing, but it was the first
thing we noticed about it.

I think the coprocessor chip you were referrring to was the Newell
fastchip floating point chip. It is available for the 800XL/XE types
as well, as I have it implemented in the OmnimonXL and Omniview 256
chip. It was basically a rewrite of the OS floating point math routines
which resulted in about a 30% increase in speed when using math
intensive software.

The self destruct program appeared in an April issue of Analog
a while back, and was meant as an April fool's joke. It did look great
though. A few issues after that, angry people sent in letters asking why
anyone would ruin their atari like this, it didn't actually do anything
to the computer, turn it off and on again and it worked fine!

Does Atari USA advertise Videogames? Here they don't. By the way,
I don't regard the VCS 2600 as a real competitor to Sega and Nintendo but
Lynx is better then the Gameboy.

Well, if it's alone. On a network, however, you can just keep all your
data off somewhere else, and have a minimum amount of software kept
locally (as a "diskless" or "dataless" client). A machine on a network
can work even without any hard drives at all.

The NextDimention board!!! :) :) Actually, I suppose one could live
life without add-on boards, but being a happy hacker, I'd prefer to
be able to add on co-processor boards and other such equipment
without buying a new machine.

Depends on whether Atari decides to act like a workstation company or
a PC company. IBM and Apple sell Unix; Sun, NeXT, DEC, HP, etc. give
it away free with the box. And with respect to performance, I've spent
most of the last three years working on 68020 Unix boxes (Sun 3/60s).
They're manageable under X windows.

Been and gone! It was created by Atari UK and a firm called Perihilion (or
something like that). Initially known as Abaq, later as the ATW.
It featured superb graphics with a multitude of associated hardware.
The OS was an existing multitasking one for transputers, right now the name
escapes me!
There were 'farm cards' available to add multiple transputers. I believe
machines running 80+ mips were around.
Cost? about 5000 sterling from memory. Most went to Universities and Atari UK
still have a few in stock apparantly.
I saw one at a show (tower case) attached to a pile of Kodak gear that scanned-

in 35m pictures and allowed you to cut/paste/merge the images and then reprint-

the finished output with no discernable loss of quality.
It was out about 1988 and was halted early this year as far as I know. It may
still be available in Europe though.

Some of the burning questions of the week:

Can one get GDOS fonts/drivers for the HP DeskJet? I got a bunch of
GDOS stuff with LDW Power, including drivers for Atari SLM, some Atari
dot matrix printer, and the standard Epson driver. Unfortunately, DJ
stuff was not included (alas! :-)).

Are drivers available anywhere? Do I need to buy FSM-GDOS? Can I get
something free (good luck, Chris...)?

As a slightly related item, I seem to remember seeing an article about
some CPX for doing DJ setup. I think it was commercial. Has anybody
used it?

Do I ask too many questions? Can anybody guess what product I might
have on order?

To: INFO-ATARI16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Greeting from Singapore,

I will be getting a 2MB Mega STe next month. Thus I have a few
questions about this computer:

1. What is the maximum limit RAM size that the Mega STe MMU can
address? Can I replace its 1MB SIMMS with 4 pieces of 4MB
SIMMS cards to get 16MB?

2. I notice (from its picture in the magazine) that there is a
DIP switch at the lower right corner of its mother board. Is
this the switch that can be set to use 1.44MB floppy disk
drive? If it is, what is the correct setting?

3. Is the 1.44MB formatter included in the TOS 2.05 (hopefully
comes with the MEGA STe that I will get) or I still have to
use other formatter programs to format 1.44MB?

Would some kind soul enlighten me please.

Thanks in advance,

Subject: SETTING SEEK SPEED FOR 1.44MB DRIVE
To: INFO-ATARI16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Greeting from Singapore,

I have installed a 1.44MB disk drive to my Mega 4 and have been
asking for the program to set the drive seek speed or step rate to
6 that will work with TOS 1.4 but never receive any response.

All along I have to boot the CLI program and type in the command
line: STEP 6 to change step rate then exit CLI to GEM desktop. Now
I have found more convenience way of working with 1.44MB drive as
follows:

1. Obtain the FCOPYPRO(fessional) program (no it's not a PD) and
config it to have drive A: as Destination drive and set step
Rate for A: to 6 and leave the step rate for B: at 3 and save
this Configuration. I have the 1.44MB drive inside the Mega 4
and have the 720KB external drive. I have to set A: as the
destination drive to be able to format the diskette in A: as
the FCOPY will sensibly refuse to format the source drive.

2. Putting FCOPYPRO.PRG in the hard disk and set its to Auto
boot under 'Install Application' menu in TOS 1.4 or put it in
AUTO folder for the older TOS. The FCOPYPRO will boot up as
an opening screen every time the computer is turn on its menu
looks quite attractive anyway. FCOPYPRO will automatically set
disk drive step rate to the correct 6 and 3 and ready to
format the new disk. It just a matter of clicking QUIT button
to go to other programs if you don't want to format disk or copy
files between 2 drives.

I know that this is not a perfect solution but it is easier than to
go to CLI and exit. I probably have to make do with COPYPRO until
some kind soul would post the suitable SEEK6 program to the NET or
the archive.

Hope this would be useful to other netters who are facing the same
problem like myself.

Subject: Why ASV Is A Dead No Future Product

Hmm, I wonder just how much ram/HD space you get with that IIci you just
bought, considering that Apple still has about 4 meg of ram and 80 meg
HD standard, whereas you have on the TT that 20 megs of ram you bought,
along with the 200 meg HD that ASV came on. I get the feeling that
ASV will be running more comfortably than A/UX in this situation...

Hmm, perhaps you could get by with TeX? GhostScript? PSfig? Nroff/troff/
eqn/tbl/etc. ? Although not nearly as nice and graphical as PageStream
or Calamus, they can get the job done. And, you can always boot the
machine up in TOS mode if you really need to.
