Hi netters,

does anyone know how can an accessory find which application is running when
it (the accessory) receives an AC_OPEN event? I am interested in either the
name of the application or its aes_handle...

thanks in advance..

The aes id of the current main application is always 0 in all GEM versions,
but this is an undocumented feature. But as this is the only fact that can
can be used as a base for anonymous communication (i.e. communication between
applications that do not know each other's name), it is used by all the
communications protocols now in existence. If a multitasking TOS should
ever be available, this will necessarily have to change; after all, only
one program can have the id zero...

Wow ! Can this be true... It just sounds too good... Well, maybe
Atari Australia (or whatever) is more sensible than Atari USA, Atari
Scandinavia, etc...Anyway, (if this is true) it is really great news !
Maybe Australia will become Atari-Mecca #2 (after Germany that is)

Can some Aussie verify this ???
I just hope they use this chance well...

Subject: Drvmap() & Dfree()
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Well, it's me again with one more question:

I've written some code that shows the free space of a selected drive letter
(including hd partitions)...using Drvmap() to find which drives are active
and Dfree() to calc the free-space on the user selected drive.
The problem is that if the user selects drive B: he's asked to insert disk
B: in drive A: (I don't have an external drive), and as soon as he does so
the ST freezes, or bombs, or resets (totally unpredictable)...It is worth
mentioning that this is an accessory program and that I have a MegaST 2 with
TOS 1.2 (or 1.02).

Has this to do with the fact that both A: and B: drives are mounted on
one physical drive? Is it a bug of Dfree() or what? I 've checked my code
very carefully & don't find anything wrong...this is additionally confirmed
by the fact that it's running fine with ALL other drives.

thanks in advance....

Not the very latest release, but this is new, unregistered (yes I have the
registration card) and should be upgradeable to latest version.

Complete set of GFA3.0/GFA Compiler just like it came.

Make an offer. I am trying to support my newly developed Mac habit thanks

It is a shell which has a lot of features similar to those found in Unix
systems. It is more or less CSH/KSH style. It has got history and aliasing.

The best thing with this shell is that it enables the use of '/' instead
of '\' in pathnames and I've been using it for almost 2 years now.

It has very few bugs although I have heard that it doesn't like STE systems.

It also comes with an editor which is quite good if you take the time to
learn how to use it efficiently.

That's partly true. It doesn't for some obscure reason not come with a
"standard" cc interface and it's a pain not to have one. Lately, however,
I have got around this and started using GnuMake so apparently it is
possible to use it with a make ...

Both Gemini and NeoDesk, as well as the newer versions of TOS, let you install
programs on the desktop and save the setup through the "Save Desktop" entry...
the former is SHAREWARE (thus cheaper than the others), while the latter
involves minimal hassle (but it also requires an STe/TT).

But the idea with the small-menu sounds challenging... I'll try to write
such a program (a la QuickMenu on the Mac)...don't hold your breath though

P.S. as an irrelevant note, the beta-testing of ATZENTA ver 2.20 is almost
finished...watch for a demo version of the program in the near future.

If what you're saying here is that NeoDesk won't run on an ST, that's
incorrect. It runs just fine on my TOS 1.0 ST

Actually Gemini consists of 2 programs Venus and Mupfel, where Venus
builds the graphical user interface and mupfel the commandline interface
(shell in unix). This single programs work with older versions of TOS.
You have to start mupfel first, and then you might start Venus from inside
Mupfel.

I hate to say this, but don't get your hopes up on it. I've heard "on
again, off again" rumours of it being available for the ST(e)/TT
machines, and I've also heard that it will only be put in newer STe/TT
machines. Maybe if we got word from an official at Atari about this. Are
either of the Msrs. Pratt (Gregg/Alan) reading this? Many users out there would
like a straight answer on this. Let's get our stories straight, as my
original post was taken from the FoReM X-net from an Atari Canada
employee. Atari users unite, and demand real answers!
