I have two suggestions:
1. To get out of your immediate problem, turn off your Hard Drive and
boot the system with a floppy. After it is at the desktop, turn on your
Hard Drive and let it get up to speed. Then run AHDI and you will be
able to access your Hard Drive. This also works if you put a .ACC file
in your ACC path and it messes you up. I don't reccommend doing this
often, or at all really, unless you absolutely must. It might damage you
r Hard Disk. I'm not sure.
2. If you can program, create a program that only has one function:
rename. Then have it only become active when a shift key is held during
the boot. Then you could have it ask you the source and new name. This
is better than installing a large booter program like Superboot, and
should only take up a few K.

How do I determine how many disk drives my ST has? Setting the active drive
will return the drive mask in d0.l, but drive B is always present, even if
I've only got one disk drive (in addition to the HD).

It's also worth pointing out that the GEnie "flat monthly fee" ONLY
applies to things like the Scuba Diving Roundtable, the Basket Weaving
Roundtable, and things like that.
If you want to access the Atari Roundtables, the IBM roundtables,
indeed, any of the machine-specific computer Roundtables, the billing
clock kicks in at $6.00 per hour, nonprime time.
Also, the "Basic" flat rate ONLY applies to reading messages in
the "Basic" Roundtables. If you want to download a GIF picture of
blow fish on the Great Barrier Reef from the Scuba Roundtable,
it's $6.00 per hour again. Realtime online Conferences (multi-user

is not. Sending or receiving files by mail is $6.00 per hour.
In other words, there are a LOT of "gotcha's" involved. You need to be

Thanks for reminding us of all this Bob. I dropped my
subscription to these pay-services when they imposed the
flat-rate system. I thought it was, and still think it is, a
rip-off. I do sort of miss access to the Gadgets forum on
Genie, but it is not worth paying for other people to read the
other non-computer forums. Anyway, I was just wondering if
anyone knew how these services were doing financially, as a
result of their change in philosophy about charging
subscribers? It might serve as a lesson in the future.

I've sent the latest version of the MiNT library (patchlevel 14) up to
atari.archive.umich.edu. There are a lot of changes from patchlevel 10,
most notably support for the new features of MiNT 0.9 (which is being
beta-tested now; sorry for the delay!). If you want a sneak preview of
what's going to be available in MiNT, grab the libraries :-).
I hope to have the new version of MiNT itself in a shippable form in a
week or two (fingers crossed).

Your the first person that I've heard say this...
What I hear is that the Panther was to be Atari's 32-bit video game system.
They were planning to release it in January of 1992.
They were also working on a 64-bit video game system called the Jaguar.
The Jaguar was to be released sometime in 1994.
However, the Jaguar was way ahead of schedule so Atari scrapped the Panther
and decided to go 64-bit all together.
The Panther would have kicked butt if released the same time as the Super
Nintendo but I guess Atari figured that would not be possible.
Can you imagine what the Jaguar will do?
The Panther would have cost $200.
I bet you that the jaguar will have a price around $300.
I have also heard that Atari may try to use some of the graphics and sound
of the Jaguar into a new ST that they are building and plan to release in 1992.
Now, if Atari can get both the Jaguar and the new ST compatible with each
other, I'll buy all the $2 stock that I can get my hands on.

What are the relative merits of the different PD C compilers for the ST?
By instinct I would go for gcc, because I use it at work on my unix
machine, but several people seem to use Sozobon.
I have 1Meg & 2 floppies, of that makes a difference.

I have a Quantum LPS105 working with an (old) ICD host adapter.
I vaguely remember someone on GEnie (perhaps Tom Harker) saying that the
old ICD host adapter (not the new Advantage series) had problems daisy-
chaining some drives, either just Seagate SCSI with any other SCSI or all
SCSI drives. Perhaps you might want to call ICD (talk to Howard, or maybe
even Tom and mention what I said) and see what they say. That is, if
you have the old host adapter. If you have the new ones, try rearranging
the position of the drives on the SCSI chain. What kind of ST do you have,
BTW?

Isn't there a mail system out there that lets people without FTP get access
to FTP sites through e-mail? It's like BART for atari.archive, but on a

The server rusinfo.rus.uni-stuttgart.de (or rusmv1....) has a
mail-server. Write email to
mail-server@rusinfo.rus.uni-stuttgart.de

520STe is the STe with 0.5MB RAM in it, yes, they are real. In fact some 520STe
came with some games boundled with it. (look in RUN PC's AD in Current Note for
titles, I don't remember them).
For upgrading to 4MB machine this is better buy, because they are cheaper than
1040 and only waste 2 256KB SIMMs in steaded of 4 256KB SIMMs in 1040.

Questions about joysticks for the ST...
Any "switch type" or "digital" joystick labelled "for use with Atari 800
Commodore-64 or Atari 2600" will work with the Atari ST.
Any IBM style joystick will NOT.
Any joystick labelled "for Nintendo" will NOT.
Actual choice of which Atari style joystick is a purely personal thing.
I prefer the original Atari joystick... yes, they break, and yes, you
have to replace them fairly often, but in my experience, they're FAR
more controllable and responsive than other, more durable units.
Your mileage may vary...

Call the Computer STudio in Asheville, NC. I don't know what their number
is, but call 800 directory information (800-555-1212) and ask for the number.
If they don't have any, plead with them to give you the number of a place
that will.
