It works just like Unix. First you uncompress. Then you untar.
atari/archivers/ includes:
compress.arc 40 Unix style compress.
compress.ttp 37 Unarc'ed compress for use with sounds, magazines, etc.
compress.zoo 68 Newer release of compress. Actually, bammi's version.
sttar.arc 20 Tar for the ST, unix style.
sttarsrc.arc 19 ST Tar source.
By the way, I haven't gotten responses to my last couple of mailings to
bart; is there a problem?

I'll bet the startup module you used doesn't support args, and you
were popping trash off the stack.
There's no real reason not to use the same startup module for both
GEM apps and straight .TOS/.TTP programs, unless you have some need
to save the few bytes required to parse the argument string into an
argv array.
Of course, the Alcyon GEM bindings might be missing some key
component (such as the crystal() function or the cntrl_cnts array for
the AES) that might be in the GEM startup file. If that's the case,
you'd need to add the relevant modules to the library. Ah, well,
Alcyon C is pretty well buried at this point anyway.
I've always used a single startup module for all Sozobon-compiled GEM
applications (except Desk Accessories, of course).

Anyone have any idea why the fantasia demo wouldn't recognise a June '91 STE
as an ste? Does it not recognise 1.62? Read it in the way that makes it think
it is 1.98? need it to be at 50htz. HELP!

Oh, no! I still use TOS 1.2 ;)) and I'm pretty happy with it. Well I
don't have "autostart application" but I use STARTGEM; I don't have "new" 1.4
TOS file-selector but I use alternate fsel; I don't have folder bug fixed, but
my ICD HD driver allocates enough folders for me, and I avoid clearing of the
memory before APP's starting by using PINHEAD; my Blitter TOS has some really
weird bugs in VDI (it's one of the first blitter TOS') but i use NVDI...
So as you can see, there's no real need for TOS 1.4 ;)))
or for TOS 2.05. I've seen TT TOS' 3.01 Desktop and it's quite an
inprovement over the old ones (<1.6), but i prefer GEMINI.
The only flaw is that all these resident PRG's occupy a lot of RAM...
So, it's time I buy some SIMMs and upgrade to 4 Megs! ;))))

Yes, along with every TOS 1.4 upgrade, comes a hard drive upgrade...
At least thats what I thought when I originally booted my system, when
going from 1.0->1.4.
Most people I know, or knew, always thought upgrading TOS just gave
you a more fancy desktop...and fixed bugs, they never usually think
about the large performance increase you get with your HD.
I was in mty MWC stage back then, and WOW, what a difference in compile
times...

I hate to spoil your fun, but the hidden screen is actually not accessible
from the main menu. It is there, but you need to do some serious hacking to
get to it.
By the way, Tim (Manikin) is now working on a game that features the fractal
routs from the main menu, and when it works out, it is going to be good fun.

The upgrade itself hard wires to the back side of the ST mother board, with
shielded pads to keep lines going from the MMU and other chips from cross
talking to each other. The upgrade requires you to have some soldering skills,
but it will not crap out on you like the Aerco or E. Arthur Brown plug in
types.

What I want to know is this: Does it have a cartridge ("dongle") port? I need
that port for my SMPTE/MIDI expander box (Unitor, from C-Lab).
If this is, in fact, one of the I/O's mentioned above, please inform me, for I
know not the technical terms.

So what is it like without all the OPTIONAL equipment and how much does
this OPTIONAL stuff add to the price.
Are they charging this much for a 68000 based machine or does this
critter use something with a little more horsepower?

Personal opinion: I like the SPARC laptops that are coming out now. I can't
afford one, but I like them. :-)

In my case, I originally was waiting for a MEGA ST4, when my 1040ST's
power supply did the deep six after I installed 4 megs in it.
However, being a devloper, gail Johnson told me she had MEGA STE's
to sell...AND HOLY COW, it was cheaper than a MEGA 4!
So I got the MEGA STE 4. I was VERY much surprised at the changes
made at the desktop...the desktop was actually USEFUL, not just
a place to launch programs from...but a place to ORGANIZE your files.

Er, I just realized how much of dupe apple is pulling on people who buy
its hardware, after talking with my ECE Prof, he really put me straight
about just HOW BAD you get ripped off when you buy ANY Apple computer
hardware...
Wow, Sculley should be arrested, or maybe we should have mass education
programs that just say: "Apple Hardware...JUST SAY NO."
Folks, its the ripoff of the century, especially when Apple manufactures
IIFx motherboards for about $500 bucks a piece.

What I'd be interested in seeing is MINIX running on an SST or TT.
Assuming someone has hacked MINIX to work on a 68030, and maybe even
tried implementing virtual memory, SST + MINIX would be a nice,
powerful, fast, cheap platform.

That was the case with Current Notes last time I saw an issue. It may
be different now. AtariUser is composed on a decent imagesetter.
