Why do I hate my PC?

It is a 286... it is functionally obslete. It is not a good game machine.
I've put too much money into it... for what I spent a year ago, I could
have an awesome machine of some other sort.

Why do I like my PC?

The standard machine. Everything available for it if I could afford it.
Parts are cheap. It is modular (I'm not afraid to open up the case and
fuck with things... it is easy). So, for instance, when my motherboard
dies... at it is in the process of doing... all I have to do it opne
up the machine, yank the thing out, and pop another in.

Peripherals are cheap.

Disk controllers cost $11... add 2 serial ports and a parallel, and
the price is $24. I *never* pay retail. There are tons of used parts
out there... the swaps are dominated by PC parts... I can buy a used
40 meg ide drive, add an $11 controller, and I'm set. I don't have
to pay $129 for a disk controller, like I've seen elsewhere. 20
meg used drives go for $30...

However, I costs $1000 to get a basic machine, vs. $500 for a
basic ST/Amiga (Macs, on the other hand).

Anyway, I'm working on getting an Amiga... if anyone will sell me
an ST for $175 (how much would it cost to hook it to my multi-sync?)
I might consider it as well.

Anyway, entertainment wise, I feel IBMs suck, which is why I'm
looking into the Amiga/Atari sectors...

What do you mean by 'new'? My best friend just bought a new Amiga 500 and it
didn't come with AmigaDos 2.0 and the ECS Agnus/Denise and he can't use the
productivity mode thats being discussed without spending quite a bit of money
to upgrade it...

Rats, you don't have a color monitor. Well, if you ever get a chance
to hook up the STE to a TV (color preferably :~) , get a copy of the
Bird demo. I'm pretty sure it's at atari.archive; it's very old too, but
does a good job at showing what the blitter can do. Run it with the
blitter on and run it with the blitter off. The demo shows a bird
flying across the screen with a seascape background.

On a monochrome monitor, if you have a copy of a paint program which will
show a block of the screen when you move it around to paste it, you can
use that (with blitter on and off) to see what affect the blitter has.

For most uses however, QuickST, TurboST, or NVDI are best. If you're
doing a lot of graphics and/or animation work, the blitter will be useful
to you.

A few posts earlier, someone wrote about a great PD art program on atari.
archive.umich.edu...

I ftp'ed it (crackart.lzh approx. 250k) and unlzh'ed it!

Got it running...

All I can tell you is WOW! Every ST user must try it once! Seems to support
ST/TT users! Load Degas, Crack Art, Neo, Spectrum, IFF, ... (?!).

Tons of great features BUT the docs are in German (yet the prg itself is
English...) The crackart.txt is 120k long...

Anybody know of a English version? of the text file????

If the programmers read this please respond (apologies: don't have the info
in front of me (names, etc))...

(Better than Degas!!!)

I just added the D70 sound saver program to our Atari archive.

The author Geert W.T. Jonkheer announced in an earlier message that the
program could be found on cs.ruu.nl. This address is wrong. The real address
is archive.cs.ruu.nl.
Our archive doesn't have a MIDI subdirectory, so you can find the program in
the sounds subdirectory.

We, Computer Science department, Utrecht University, are running an
anonymous FTP server on one of our systems. In addition to the FTP
service we're also running a mail server, for those of you without
direct Internet access.

--> How to get 'D70rxtx' via anonymous FTP:

Site: archive.cs.ruu.nl [131.211.80.5]
Login: "anonymous" or "ftp"
Password: your own email address (you@your_domain)

Don't forget to set binary mode!

--> How to get 'D70rxtx' via e-mail from our mail-server:

NOTE: In the following I have assumed that your mail address is
"fred_flintstone@stone.age.edu"; of course you must substitute
your own address for this.
** PLEASE USE VALID DOMAIN ADDRESSES. DO NOT USE ADDRESSES **

end

The path command can be deleted if we receive a valid from address in your
message. If this is the first time you use our mail server, we suggest you
first issue the request:

A complete "ls-lR" listing of the archive is kept in the top-level

The program is called d70rxtx.zoo and must be found in the

Hope anyone who is interested enjoys the program.

And thank god for that. I wouldn't WANT half the garbage that's in Unix in
AmigaDos. Unix is good for what it does (i.e. a multi-user environment that
goes to great pains to insure that another user cannot interfere with another
user.), however, i prefer speed and headache free operation.

By the way, Unix or Mach are not *that* much more "advanced" if that's what
you wish to call it. It's just more features (which may or may not be
wanted). by your reasoning then, Multics is a FAR more advanced OS than Unix
(simply because it has more features). There's more to an OS than how many
MAN pages it takes up.

I am using gnuemacs 18.57 and Bammi's ispell port (both are
excellent ports, many thanks to Scott and Jwahar). Howerver,
I am unable to invoke ispell from gnuemacs using the ispell.el
in the ispell package. That does not surprise me, as I would
expect to have to set an environment variable or a path in the .el
file. However, after playing around with it for awhile, I could not
get it to work. Does anyone on the net use ispell from gnuemacs (18.57)?
If so, would you let me know what I have to set up in order to do it?

On a related note, Edgar Roeder(sp?) posted a compile.el and then
a patch to it to create a compiles.el. My version of patch will not h
handle this file. Would some kind soul email me an updated compiles.el?

Thanks in advance!

Subject: Here's how to hook a MicroSoft Mouse to a ST
To: info-atari16@score.stanford.edu

Well, here is how to connect a Microsoft Mouse to an Atari ST. (520/1040)
The Atari has a 9-pin D-type connector. The Microsoft Mouse has a rather
strange connector on the end. To prevent having to cut the mouse cable up,
I made this adaptor. If you still can't follow it, please let me know and
I'll try to redescribe it. This does work for me. I've been using it for
6 or so months now with no problems at all. It does take some soldering
skills, so if you're not so hot at soldering, find a friend to help.

As far as I know, this does not effect your Atari's warranty. However, I
have not asked Atari. :-)

The Microsoft mouse connector looks like this. This is the solder side,
with the leads pointing up.

If you can not use the connector, the pins are numbered as follows. This

Why not get TOS 1.4 then you would have lots more room, it uses these RAM
than TOS 1.2 , plus you don't nead Fatspeed and you can do away with
