Really? Is the Spectre GCR/128 also then blatant piracy? How about PCDITTO? For
that matter, what about all the PC clones? The NewTek roms? If someone buys the
Mac roms and wants to play around making a Mac-emulator at home, then more
power to them. As for having the Mac OS, what makes you think this person did
not just go out and purchase System 6.0.x or 7.0? That's what you have to do
with the Spectre GCR, and it is not piracy.

It is? Please explain.. I don't see anything that indicates piracy
directly... having a set of Mac ROMs is legal, so is having a copy of the
Mac OS if correct procedure is followed (IE you obtained it in a legal manner).
I see nothing more than someone perhaps trying to reverse engineer Magic
Sac which is impressive if successful...

Apple claims full Copyright protection of their ROMs.

The posting is not clear, and it's pretty clear that this is
because the guy who posted it doesn't really know what he's doing.
But I agree that it sounds to me that what he wants to do is perfectly
legal. He doesn't want to burn copies of the ROMs, he wants to stick
them in a ROM Cartridge under the mistaken assumption that this will
turn it into a Mac. As you point out, Spectre GCR (or the older
cartridge port adapters) are much more than just ROM cartridges
in the sense he seems to be thinking of them.

One caveat... with his recent promotion, he may have also gotten a

I've got trouble with Bob Fischer's new (3.00) edition of his "Vault".
The program looks a good deal nicer now indeed, but unfortunately I got
the following error, which makes the whole tool worthless.
Using unformatted disks and two disk drives normally the box "I can't
read this disk" (or something like that) comes up when accessing the
next disk in the other drive, after completing the write to the disk in
the first drive. I usually click "format" there and go ahead.
But two times (well, after the first time I removed _everything_ special
from my setup, all acc's, all resident stuff, ending up with a factory-
clean setup) I got _two_bombs_ instead of that box, and the program exited.
The problem occured first after the second or third disk, and the second
time when accessing the 11th disk.
This is quite annoying. Did somebody else run into similar trouble?
Is the author on the net? (Hiya, Bob!)
My configuration is, what I would say, rather normal: 520 ST+ with 2 MB,
30 MB harddisk, 2 floppies, monochrome monitor, TOS 1.4. As I said,
I removed all potential obstacles from memory.
I didn't know this problem from the older Vault version, which was
already quite nice. But I would like to use 3.00, if possible. If there
is any fix or hint (aside from using pre-formatted disks, which I will
try next), please let me know.

Yup, I'm running both POOLFIX3 and FOLDR150. Perhaps it has to do with
the depth of my directory tree?

If you get Cross-Dos for the Amiga you can write DOS format disks in it, and
then you will have no problem reading them in your ST! Note that I've never
tried this myself, but it should work just fine...

Few things I would like to know:
First: I need a switcher to use two key-protected MIDI-applications
under MROS. Can you help me to find one which works well and is
relatively cheap. It can be for 2 or 3 cartridges.
Second: Can anyone tell me which graphic cards do work with Spectre.
I am looking for ones capable to 800x600 or 1024x768 pixels. Amount of
colors is not important, Spectre is 2 colors anyway...

My TT also has serious interference problems when its VGA monitor
sits on top of it. No problems, though, with the 19" monitor standing
next to the machine, but with the PTC1426 I sometimes get alert boxes
when reading disks. They vanish as soon as I switch off the VGA monitor...
So this problem is REAL!

Of course you mean kilobits.

The top 64k (bytes) is not addressable with the standard glue chip.
By applying a hardware patch to the GLUE it is possible to get an extra
32k of general purpose ROM space and also 32k of instruction-only ROM space
which would fully utilise the 256k available on the two 1-Mbit ROM chips.
It is simpler to retrofit the new TOS by patching GLUE so that the ROM sits at
the new base address. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the way it was done.
