I've not tried the site suggested by the person who wrote yesterday, but what
I do know is that rusmv1.rus.uni-stuttgart.de have G++ (not sure which version
thoough). This is also the best Atari FTP site I've seen, it has twice as much
stuff as terminator at least.

> Questions:
> 1) When will it be relesed ?

On past performance: much later than you want, later than you expect,
and a bit later than you'd dared to guess when, taking into account past
performance, you were being most pessimistic.

>
> 2) Who will handle distribution (Atari Directly, or through dealers, mail
> order, ...)?

No doubt this will differ from country to country, and Atari UK will try
to handle it themselves, then spend a year trying to decide whether to
sell it or give it away (based on their treatment of the Epson emulator
for the SLM804 and the time it took them to release the presentation
graphics program Hyperchart. By the way, Atari UK still sells v1.0 of
the Epson emulator, whereas Atari USA gives away v1.31. I know which I
use, and I'm sorry I bought the UK product).

> 3) What will it cost, and will it include (as I have heard rumoured) drivers
> for most printers including the HP DeskJet (original version)?

See above. It would, of course, be sensible to include Deskjet drivers,
but if space is tight on the disk, then an SMM124 (Atari dot matrix
printer, if I've remembered the number correctly) driver might win out.

> 4) Can I get it now by buying Goldeaf's Wordflair II?

I don't know, but I bet a) they'd like to bundle it, and b) the Tramiels
won't let them even though the software engineers have had it ready for
a while.

> 5) Will this guy ever run out of questions? Why ask why? Why is the sky
blue....

On the last question, read 'The Cuckoo's Egg'. Some professor once
asked Cliff Stoll the same question in an astronomy exam and had him
sweating for hours over the answer.

Wouldn't it be nice if Atari were to prove me wrong on 1-4 above?

Christoph Strunk's port of gcc 1.39, g++ 1.39.0 and libg++ 1.39.0 is on

Hope this helps.

Hi Jim,

JO>Also, I have no idea what they are intending to use the "CDPATH"
JO>for. I've never seen it on a Unix system or an OS-9 system and
JO>I don't know what program would look for it. Is that supposed to
JO>be a path for CD Rom applications?

the environment variable CDPATH is a Mupfel-feature, I think.
It is used to define where a "CD" (change dir) command - used in the
shell - should preferably look first.
Just a short look into the documentation ... (please excuse my
translation ;-))

cd [dir]
Changes to directory dir. Without arguments the value of
$HOME will be used. Dir may contain a drive specification
(eg. C:\BIN). If there is an CDPATH defined and a change
to dir is not possible, then Mupfel puts dir
at the end of each CDPATH-entry and tries to change
directory at this path.

example: cd TEST
path TEST not found
CDPATH defined as C:\FIRST, D:\SECOND
now Mupfel tries to make a
cd C:\FIRST\TEST
and cd D:\SECON\TEST
before issuing an 'dir not found' error

Kind regards
Lutz

(there is no documentation for the PRG included) you can not
do these pictures with RCS.PRG !! The only possibilty is to open
such an empty object, and then load the image from disk out of

that is able to create such files, or are there any other possibilitys.
Thanks a lot in advance for all answers.

It doesn't work either with TOS 1.2. This would seem to be why Atari removed it
from the ST language disk. It is possible to run LOGO.PRG and edit with it,
but it falls over itself soon after starting to run a LOGO program. I guess it
relies on internal GEM variables in TOS 1.0.

I heard this works on TOS 1.6 if you put the 256k SIMMs as the first bank
and the 1M SIMMs as the second bank. But I could be wrong. If you're
having trouble, though, it's trivial to try it the other way.

SLM804, the laser printer, barely runs on a MEGA2. 4 mb is simply not enough
if you have other program in memory.

P.S.
I think adding a fast disk (say 900 Kilo bytes/sec) is cost effective than
adding two or four megabytes of memory above 4 mb on my old Mega4.

I have just seen an ad in a catalog from E. Arthur Brown for
MultiGEM, which is said to be a multitasking system for the ST.
Does anybody know anything about it? In particular:

1. How good is it? Will it run, for example, dvist and unix
windows? Will it permit a background kermit transfer via unix
windows or uniterm?

2. How does it compare to MiNT?

3. Does it run on a TT? If not, is there a version for the TT?

Please send me e-mail, and I will summarize to the net. Thank you.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my previous posting. So far I had been
formatting on the PC but it was getting tiresome when I had to keep running
out to the campus just to format another dozen or so disks. The information
is very useful.

Steve, thanks for the information on the bytes to be changed. I'll try it

Actually, a good number of BBSes should have a formatting tool that
allows the ST to format for MS-DOS machines. (The formatting is actually
identical-- a few boot sectors have to be placed on the disk.)

If you cabn get ahold of PC Ditto (the software version), the FORMAT
A: command works just as well.

Try Best Electronics in San Jose, CA. They specialize in such kinds of
accessories for Atari 8-bit and ST computers. I don't have their
address or phone handy, but the appropriate information operator would
have it. Try 408/555-1212 or 415/555-1212.
