Guys, I don't think Bob keeps posting this. I would guess a mailer/news
posting problem. So lets not take it out on Bob, OK? Talk to your news
manager and see if you can figure out how to kill it (like sending out
cancelation notices? or maybe something else.)

Look at the message. It has two paths, I think that Bob's message somehow
got slapped on top of, but not completely covering someone elses message.
Also check your message ID's for the various message of subject <None>, they
are all different. So you might want to place something in your kill
files to temporarily wipe these suckers out. Then once they've been expired
from the net, we can remove those from our kill files. What to put in the
kill file, I don't know, any suggestions? Or any other ideas about getting
rid of these messages?

PS - Bob, I'm not trying to get you "black-listed" (ie. stuck in everyones kill
files), but these do need to be taken care of, somehow.

Before you run out and buy a CDTV please wait for CD-I (Compact Disc
Interactive). CD-I, the next generation of CD player (developed by
Philips, Sony, and Matsushita) will play current audio CDs as well as
mega-games and full-motion video (roughly VHS quality). Probably
advantages over CDTV are that the nine largest consumer electronics firms
in the world will be producing CD-I players, so the software support should
be tremendous. Availability is slated for October in Europe, probably a few
months later in the US (but I could be wrong either way).
> It seems to me that a STE with CD-ROM and the right software could
> perform similar functions.
CD-I players are based on the 68340 chip, a derivative of the 68020, and
CD-RTOS, a specialized version of OS-9. Since the STE (or TT) can both
run OS-9, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for either machine to be
CD-I compatible, though it might take some additional hardware (on a VME
card?) to support the full motion video.

Before you hold your breath for the introduction of CD-I, consider that
Phillips has been promising it's imminent introduction for the last three
years. Sound like any company we know? Nah.... :-)

When you have reserved the area under the box using form_dial() and give this
area back after closing the box, the GEM will send a redraw message to the
former owner of this area. If it was the desktop, the the owner is GEM and it
draws the background over all which was there to hide the box.
If there was a window, the owning application has to redraw it for GEM does
not save anything exept under dropdown-menues and alert-boxes.

Subject: Maxtor in TT
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Hi there!
I need some harddisk help:
I want to change my built-in Seagate ST157N-1 and to replace it
with my new Maxtor LXT 213 SY. My machine is an Atari TT030/6
with TOS 3.01, diskdriver AHDI 4.0.
I got only one data sheet with the disk, it says (in german):
Jumpersetting:
...
Jumper 5 (PIN 9,10) activates the Parity (cannot be switched off)
Jumper 4 (PIN 7,8) chooses the spin power option
Questions:
1. I know that the ICD Host Adaptor (often used to connect the
ST 157N-1 with a Mega ST) is not able to drive a SCSI disk without
paritity. This is an information from ICD Germany.
Will the host adaptor in the TT (bought 11/91) be able to drive
my new 210 MB disk?
2. What does Jumper 4 mean???
Thank for your replies, i won't install the new disk before!
BTW: Does somebody know how to connect the ST157N-1 with my Megafile 44?
I want to install it in the same case, are there any built in frames to
hold the disk?
Thanks Bernhard

Subject: MINIX/TT
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Hi,
Since mentioning MINIX/TT several people asked about its state and
availability. Well, here are some of the answers on the frequently
answered questions.
1) Does MINIX/TT exist?
Yes, from a certain point of view it is. I have it running on my
system. However it is not yet finished.
2) Have parts of MINIX/TT been posted to the net.
No. I don't consider it "good enough"
3) Is there another way to get a copy?
Mmm. Depends. If you can live with the current version and you have
MINIX/ST we can arrange that I send you some diffs to this version.
As a return favour I'd like to hear from you how you are going with
it. Do not ask for a copy if you do not feel competent to hack the
kernel. Also please give me some motivation what you want to do with
the stuff. Remember that every request I have to deal with costs
some time, which cannot be used for further developments of MINIX/TT
Also please describe your hardware.
4) What is the current state of MINIX/TT
It works. That is, every MINIX/ST program runs on it.
It supports external asci hard disks, and probably one serial
port (I still have to convert from 25 pin cables to 9 pin cables).
I suppose the printer will also work, but I don't have a parallel
printer to test this out.
5) What needs to be done?
Quite a lot:
- support fast ram (there is some code, but it need to be polished)
- support the real time clock
- make use of the mmu and remove the shadowing code
- support the internal hard disk (scsi port)
- support the additional rs232 ports
- clean up stvdu and the font stuff to deal with the TT resolutions.
6) When will this be finished?
No idea. Hopefully somewhere this autumn. remeber this is an
evening job, and that my time is rather limited.
Hope this informs you all a little.
PS: something unrelated: if you read to here, you probably own a TT.
If so, and if you know/have a nice demo which demonstrates the TT
capabilities (e.g. a nice graphic or sound demo), please mail me
a copy. Thanks.

Or maybe it has something to do that Alan Pratt, who does most of the posting

do with decisions about how longs products are witheld and various other
business decisions. What a concept!

Could it be that they are programmers and not PR types? Yeah, that's the ticket
Lets not lose a great source of (technical) information by alienating A. Pratt
and Ken B. Remember, they don't get paid to answer questions on the net.

Considering that they give a hell of a lot better input to
this newsgroup than you have, you shouldn't criticize. However,
the answer to your question could be:
1) Because they are not in charge of releasing products
2) Because they aren't allowed to release policy information
3) Because it's not their job. (See number one).
4) Because they hate YOU.
I suppose it would be silly of me to tell you to get a spell-checker.

Maybe it's because they are technical personnel (i.e programmers) and not
in marketing? If the marketing personnel were on Usenet, would you ask them
technical questions about hardware and/or software? Chances are, they wouldn't
know the answers anymore than Mr. Pratt et al know about Atari's marketing
strategies (if they have one :-)).
Now, if Bob Brodie could get Usenet access . . .
