Subject: 640x400 for STE with COLOR MONITOR
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
Two small 640 x 400 screen emulators for STE and COLOR SCREENS
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
640x400n.prg A standard big screen emulator except that it only
"""""""""""" scrolls up and down as you move the mouse outside
the upper and lower edges and takes up only 64 K.
The 640x400 resolution is great for programs like
Calamus DTP, Timeworks DTP, CAD programs etc etc
TOS and text-based applications still use only
the upper half 640x200 as this gave the best
results with most of the programs I tested :-)
640x400i.prg This program uses INTERLACE to display 640x400
"""""""""""" on a standard TV with no up/down scrolling !!!
It flickers some (no way around that without
a hardware modification), but if you adjust your
contrast and use 60Hz it's better than Amiga :-)
Installation Both programs should be in the AUTO-folder (but
"""""""""""" not both at the same time). During a normal boot
they will NOT install. To make them install you
must hold down one of the SHIFT keys during boot.
The programs need a STE or a MEGA STE to work !!!

But, alas, I was not talking about a measly 030 chip... The NeXT comes
with a 68040 running at 25Mhz... Plus it has "Display Postscipt"...
Plus BUILT in ethernet. The color is not all that important because I
can greyscale everything anyway.. and the MegaPixel display is extremely
SHARP....

Subject: Elvis Inserts Newlines in my Files
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I've been using Elvis (a vi clone) for quite some time now, but just
recently discovered that the version I have (from atari.archive)
sometimes inserts newlines at seemingly random points in large files.
Since most of the work I do is on source code with < 32K source
modules, I never noticed the problem until now.
Anybody know of a fix for this problem, or have a newer version of
Elvis? I've tried Levee too, and would use it except for the 32K file
limit. (Is there a more recent version of levee without the 32K
restriction?)
Thanks,
Dave Baggett

Subject: Unix Windows....
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I read a message not too long ago that meantioned a UNIX windowing
interface called Unix Windows that would run on the ST. I was
very interested so I ftp'd it over from atari.archive.
My problem: it don't work :-)
First I ran win.prg on the ST. Boy, looks nice. I kinda had the idea
I would be able to use it to make the connection to the remote system
but all I get is a blank window (the pull downs and everthing works).
My next step was to compile the server program (uw) on the SUN system
that I use. Then I ran the uw program.. whew, no core dump.
Crossing my fingers, I exit my term program (uniterm) and run win.prg.
Still, I get nothing. The RS232 setup is correct. It tells me the
UW is not running whenever I try to open a window.
I cannot type in any of the windows on the screen. I fear that the problem
might be that I am trying to run the program on a color system. One of the
readme's said it would only run on mono systems. Is this a case? Is there
a fix? Am I doing something totally wrong (likely).
Please help... thanks....

It's not your only problem... (Fun to flame even if I am flaming myself)

As usually, you were doing something totally wrong. It only runs on
monochrome systems. I had this EXACTLY :-) same problem. You need to
run a monochrome emulator first -- then it will run fine. Unfortun-
ately the display aint going to look so hot. Pretty nifty though.

Subject: VIDEO GAME RATINGS BALLOT [ATARI]
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
To use this ballot, just hit "R". Once in your editor, insert your game
rating between the word "vote" and the system code and game title. Your
rating must be an integer between 1 and 10. There must be at least one
blank on either side of your rating. Make sure the word vote appears at
the start of each rating.
If you do not want to rate a particular game, just DELETE THAT LINE FROM
THE BALLOT. When you are finished, SAVE THE FILE, and exit the editor.
The votes will be sent to the game rating tabulator.
The general guideline for ratings is:
8-10 worth buying at full price
6-7 worth buying at a discount, or if you're particularly interested
in this kind of game
3-5 only worth renting
2 only worth playing for free, and only for a few minutes
1 worthless
If you want to vote for additional games, just add them at the end, in
a format similar to the existing entries. Be sure to include the system
code right before the title. This code is one of the below:
AL = Atari Lynx AM = Commodore Amiga
GB = Nintendo Game Boy GG = Sega Game Gear
GS = Apple II GS MA = Apple Macintosh
NE = Nintendo NES and Famicom NG = SNK NeoGeo
PC = IBM PC, PS/2, and compatibles SG = Sega Genesis and MegaDrive
SF = Nintendo Super Famicom ST = Atari ST
TG = NEC TurboGrafx-16, TurboExpress,
and PC Engine
Thanks for participating in the rec.games.video ratings poll. (This
text was adapted from Chuck Musciano's rec.arts.movies ballots and John
Leo's rec.games.video ballots.)

In this list, games have been rated on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the
best and 1 being the worst. For each game, the total number of votes,
the average rating, and the vote distribution are shown. New games are
indicated by a "*" before their entry. If a "(C)" appears after the
title it means that the game is a CD-ROM or disc system title. If a
"(J)" appears after the title it means that the game is currently only
available in Japan.
The general guideline for ratings is:
8-10 worth buying at full price
6-7 worth buying at a discount, or if you're particularly interested
in this kind of game
3-5 only worth renting
2 only worth playing for free, and only for a few minutes
1 worthless
The vote distribution uses a single character to represent the
percentage of votes for each ranking. The following character codes can
appear:
"." no votes cast "3" 30-39% of the votes "7" 70-79% of the votes
"0" 1-9% of the votes "4" 40-49% of the votes "8" 80-89% of the votes
