Subject: 1040 ST fails ram test
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I have just aquired a 1040 st and for some reason, it fails
the ram test for the next 512k bank.
I have 3 questions :
- What could cause this ( besides the fact that I might not have
an extra 512k in the machine )
- Is there an earlier version of the 520 st that looks like
the 1040 st ( the logo on my 1040 looks 'strange' )
- Is there a fool-proof ram test prg. that I can use to make
sure I am not seeing things( I am using a pd version
right now )
Any replies or hints are welcome .

I like the new system of Indexing, but I have problems getting files from
Bart sometimes. It would be nice if their were some examples in the
"help" file that detailed how to get files through the e-mail system.
I've been using commands of the format "sendb dir/filename.ext
aa,ab,ac,ad,ae" and then hoping I would get the file. One file that I
have been consistantly unable to get is Overscan 3. I just never get a
response. The new system of indexing is quite clear, though.

Is there such a thing as an AtariUUCP BBS program? I've only seen FidoNet
capable BBS programs, and FidoNet does not come close to the amount of
support of Usenet.
Also, can someone please explain what OS/9 is? Pardon my ignorance, but I've
heard a bit about it, but what does it differ from GEM?

HELP!! I am looking for a GIF to IFF converter that will run on the ST.
If you know where to get one, let me know.
Also, If you know where to find a Giff viewer that will take from the
4906 color palet of ST STe, or ST with shifter, and convert it into a
Spc or SPu or NEO or anything that uses the 4096 color palet, Id
be interested in that too.
thanks.

Check out atari.archive in the printing/pbm/ directory. There's a whole
slew of graphic conversion utilities for the ST. I don't know if there's
a GIF->IFF converter though. The files there are huge as well: some are
greater than 300K.

I've been using the awk script that follows on our Unix systems
successfully for quite a while. If you run it on a file that has all
the parts of a distribution in it in numerical order, it'll strip the
extraneous stuff out of it and output a file suitable for uudecoding.
To use it, you can paste it into a file called 'stripuue.awk', copy it
into your News directory, and add this line to your .cshrc:
alias strip 'awk -f
(To be able to use the shell alias immediately, type "source .cshrc" at
the csh prompt.)
Thereafter, when you save a set of binaries/sources with the 's'
command, you can use the same filename for each to effectively
concatenate all the parts into one file (but make sure they are cat'ed
in the correct order...sometimes part03 comes before part02, etc.)
Then you can just type something like:
strip filename > stripped.filename
and you should be able to uudecode the "stripped.filename" at that
point without problems.
'stripuue.awk' follows:
-------Delete everything above this line, inclusive----------------

I have the following questions:
- what is the minimun system configuration one must have ?
- what are the limitations of such a system?
- what mac software will I be able to run ?
- will I need the original mac roms in order to
run the mac emulator?
- do anyone have an emulator to sell ?
- what price is too much ?
- is PC ditto (ibm emulator ) a more economical
option to access a larger software base?
- will I be able to read mac disks ?
Thanks

To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
I finally got Usenet access here, and I've found that it takes a LOT
of time to work with-- as well as the fact that I'd rather not read every
message that comes along, so I wind up skipping messages.
There are terminal programs for IBMs and Macs that allow one to a)
leave the program running, b) it will dial out automatically, and capture the
necessary files, and c) present them to you later on. These programs also do
something else which marks them above the standard capture buffer: they
provide for tracking replies to messages.
In a sense, they present the info to he user as though they're still
on line, get the responses, and the next day they redial out and upload the
replies.
Are there any such programs for the ST? Or, conversely, are there any
script files that will allow Flash to do this?
Brian Siano-- no signoff text yet, but I'm working on it.

Good luck in getting your stuff published in Start. If it does by some
miracle, you will not get paid for it. As far as I have been able to tell,
they have not been paying authors for a long time (including me). Start is
going down real fast. They are not getting any advertising money - advertisers
are staying away in droves. I actually heard recently they've been running
some ads *for free* just to try and keep things alive. Bob Brodie is doing
his new column for free. A great pity, Start's kinda all there is left
in terms of mainstream Atari magazines in North America.

After my original post, I saw System 7 in a store and it
wasn't terribly slow...and I didn't see it crash. It would be
interesting to know if Dave checked it out on a "regular"

Unfortuneatly, System 7.0 doesn't work with the latest version of Dave Small's

Although the boot up error is quite trivial, and you don't get a crash

If I remember correctly, Dave has a IIfx. I don't think he'd base
his evaluation solely on his GCR on an ST (with or without a '30 board).

It must have been a beta-version. Nobody (except the guys who made it)
had the "golden copy" of system7 any earlier than a week or so before the
official release. If it was the sys7b4 release, it runs like a dog on even
Mac computers :). However, this makes me wonder: will the SST and the TT be
able to take advantage of the Virtual Memory handling of sys7? I ask this
because (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) I believe that Spectre (all
versions) emulate the Mac Plus, so if the sys7 uses system calls to determine
the hardware it is being run on, then maybe it will think it is using a 68k
rather than an '030 and therefore be unable to use the PMMU of the '030.
BTW, Dave (or anyone else in the know), have you fixed the TT cart.
port problem? I _think_ that was the problem that people were having
running Spectre 3.0 on TTs ... (again, correct me if I'm wrong....).

Is this a commercial advertisement? I've seen this quite a few times in
the last several months.
In the first paragraph, he says "available for a limited time." How
limited?
In the last paragraph, he says he wants to know ahead of time so he "can
process your order more quickly."
I bring this up because of the recent discussion about the mini-e-mail-order
service Mark Choi (it was you, wasn't it?!) was going to set up.
