Hello Everyone !

A friend of mine have an Atari 1040STE.
He has accidently formatted a floppy with some days work (he had no
backup).
I wonder if there exists any opportunities to recover the data (as
Norton Utilities etc.)

Please e-mail me answers..

Thanks !

For you gamers, their reviews usually include lots of hints.

If you like the Atari world, this mag is for you. $27/yr (10 issues)

The overall best unit is the NEC 3D. It is very sharp in
all resolutions, can memorize your screen size and will end the
clutter of equipment on the desk. It will also end your wallet,
too. $600.00.
A great paper-white monochrome monitor is the NEC GS2A. I
find it better than the Atari monochrome monitor and it costs
about $50.00 more. For everybody BUT Atari STs, it is a
gray-scale multisync. Atari's video does not support
gray-scale. This monitor would be suitable only as replacement
for the Atari monochrome. Norm Weinress, of O.P.I., the company
that makes the D.E.K.A. keyboard adaptor for the ST is
developing a gray scale card. He can be found on GEnie and on
Delphi. Oh, the cost for the GS2A is about $225.00.

Highly recommended! I installed a SeaGate 296n in my old

Be sure to clean the power connectors very well as the
SeaGate is quite fussy about resistance-free power.

In IA16 V19#404 24JUL1991 Lauren Howard of ACCCHU mentioned that Current
Notes is now the best Atari mag around, bar none. I quite agree. Here is the
correct address for CN:
Current Notes
122 N. Johnson Rd.
Sterling VA 22170
phone (703)450-4761
My opinion of this magazine, unlike Mr. Howard's, isn't exactly unbiased. I
devote an average of 25 hours/week of my personal time to CN, with no pay.
I'm the 8-bit Editor, but I also own a 1040STe.
Which just goes to show money isn't everything. Quality flows when you
have motivated people. STart/ANTIC, recently demised, never rose above med-
iocrity. CN has always had a hard core of followers who know TRUTH when they
read it (we spare no one), who keep coming back for more. As long as anyone
is interested in an atari computer, we will be there.
I don't give away 100hrs/month of my time for nothing.

Subject: DigiStuff (latest versions of digital sample utilities) available
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Well it's been over a year since I've updated the copies of Beep, Digitial
Keyclick, Digivec, Play, etc. at atari.archive, so I've made a new archive
which contains the latest versions of all these and more.

Here's an exerpt from the doc file that comes with it, FYI:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The accompanying self-extracting archive contains the following digitized
sound utilities:

Program Ver. Function
------- ---- --------
Beep v1.5 Replace system beep with digital sample
Digital Keyclick v1.7 Replace keyclick with digital samples
Digivec v1.5 Trigger digital samples on system errors
QD Play v1.7 Play sounds from desktop or AUTO folder
st2hippo v1.2 Convert ST format sounds to Hippo format
hippo2st v1.2 Covnert Hippo format sounds to ST format
sparc2st v1.0 Convert SparcStation .au files to ST format

The most notable improvment in the AUTO folder programs is support for
alternate D/A devices like the Hippo/Navarone and ST Replay digitizers.
QD Play now has a -r option to play sounds in reverse. All of the utilities
have been made much more robust since the first versions.

Note that all are FREE except for Digital Keyclick, which is
SHAREWARE. If you like any of the programs, please send in the $15
registration fee for Digital Keyclick. See the Digital Keyclick doc
file for info on what you'll get when you register. If you've already
registered, thanks a bunch!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This should be available from atari.archive.umich.edu in the next few
days. Look for it initially in atari/newitems/digistuf.arc, then later
in atari/sound/players/digistuf.arc.

Please let me know if there are any problems.

PS> If anyone would like to loan me an STe, I'll be more than happy to

Hi,

I'm not trying to start a falme war or anything but I need to know which lharc
will work with these 2 files:

cocktail.lzh
gods.lzh

I have lharc 0.51 it extracts the files and gives me one unamed file but no
real files. While running, it says each individual file exists but it does
appear to extract them. But when it is done I just get this one unnamed file.

Any ideas or someone who can tell me which version of lharc to use
would be most helpful and appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My question is: Does it matter just what kind of Multisync monitor I
get? I've seen some 2Ds as low as two hundred dollars-- would it workl with
an Omniswitch?

That is true, although the mono is a bit grainy on the two such units I have
seen. It has been posted that will a high grade Multisync this is not true,
but I have not seen this.

Yes, it does matter. There are some specs that the monitor must meet. I
suggest that you call Toad Computers (1-800-544-6923) and ask them. They have
introduced a monitor-switchbox/multisync adaptor box themselves (in
this months issue of Current Notes) which costs $59 ($39 for monitor switching
only). They should know the specs you need.

I am in no way connected with Toad blah blah.

The August copy says that the New new-look ST User will feature ST World
incorporated within its pages, so it will be another re-vamp.
Personally I object to the current new-look being written for 10 year olds
by (seemingly) 10 year olds - a picture of Bart Simpson on the front of a
recent edition says it all, I think.
Hopefully the writing style and coverage, will change for the better (and
elder!), but I guess not.
Still none of the ads. in it are mentioning Mega STEs for sale - anyone
in the UK got one yet, and if so, for how much?

To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

I have heard ENOUGH! I don't see why everyone has problems with LZH and
LHarc.. All you need to do is use UNLZH 1.72 and all your files will be
unlzh'd easily and painlessly! It uses a nice GEM interface and I have
had *no* problems with it.

I use DC Utilities' DC Xtract 2.0 to LZH files. Before I upload them, I

"test" the archive for errors. Once in a while the file fails the CRC check,
but when it passes 95% of the time, I proceed to upload it.

If you do the above -- use UNLZH 1.72 to unlzh, then use a LZH'r which can
test LZHives -- you will have no problems whatsoever. However, there is no
way you can get around bad LZH files someone else may have uploaded. WE
just need to encourage everyone to test their LZH'd files; otherwise, use
ARC.
Here is how to get Unlzh 1.72 from Terminator:

(This is the description of the file):

>unlzh172.lzh 176 Unlharc version 1.72. I don't use this one. :).

YOU SHOULD :)

A couple of years ago I needed some special characters in a document I
was working on. I tried replacing the system font using font.ttp, and
also some accessory that does a similar trick (the name escapes me
right now), but in each case WP just reverted to using the normal
system font. I know that my new font was resident, because when I
called up the Alt/Ctl key mapping screen, the table of characters at
the bottom was displayed using the new font; but for some reason WP
would only display the normal system font on the document screen.

I called WPCorp to find out whether they had hard-coded the address of
the ROM character tables into the program, or whether the program uses
its own built-in display font (which just happens to be identical to
the system font). The ST Support person didn't want to tell me much
(it seems that WPCorp takes a dim view of people hacking on their
executables), but did finally hint that the program uses its own
fonts. So I went searching through the program with a binary editor,
thinking that I would find the character tables and modify them
directly. But I wasn't able to locate them. :-( Truth to be told, I
don't even know exactly what to look for.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be forever grateful, as I'm sure
would Gerry and others who would like to see some different characters
in their WP documents.
