Don't know how Norton's utility does it, but in DOS5.0 there is actually two
format. One will physical format the disk and destory the data, the other one
( called quick format) will reset the FAT table area and if the disk has enough
space left, it will keep a copy of FAT to that place so the disk can be unformat
, however it does not work with normal reformatted disk.

If you realy think an IBM shop can unformat disks then there should be no
problem. The STE makes standard IBM disks so there is no need to use and extra
programs such as DC Format. Go ahead and try whatever PC stuff you think can
recover the disk. Good luck.

You want to get UPS from the University of Kent.
Check ARCHIE for the exact machine.

UPS is 10 times better than DBX, SDB, GDB, and that ilk.

It has an Ansi C interpreter built in; you can type in code,
splice it in, and hit the GO button. Very very slick.

Just thought I'd drop a note to the net letting all of our international
friends know that Double Click Software will be attending, displaying and
selling our wares at this year's Atari Meese show in Duesseldorf.

We will be showing something of particular interest to owners of AT Speed
or PC Speed. Can't say more, you have to wait. :-)

We will also be showing (but not selling) our new game authoring package.
Wow, it is hot!

Plus, our DC Utilities, DC Desktop, DC Shower and (tadum!) Data Diet - the
_only_ realtime compression program for the Atari computer. Not to mention
our DC Port serial expansion cartridge, too.

We really look forward to meeting our net friends face to face (and sharing
a few rounds with them too!).

This may be a very stupid question. I just experienced 3 blackouts
in 1 day while my ST was on. I was wondering does blackouts have the
same effect or any effect on the hardware as do surges? Of course
I do have a surge protector, but it probably didn't help any in this
situation. I might just be paranoid about this, but I'm just cautious
about my cpus.

The Cleveland Free-Net Atari SIG's Programming/Developing Forum is growing
in usage and population.

Atari computer users are working on new projects both in software and
hardware.

If you are a programmer or even a developer, why not help users bring new and
grea
great products to the Atari world?

You can discuss almost any programming topic that you wish. The only thing
we cannot allow is for developers to release classified developer information.

If you are interested in programming or making great things for your computer,
why not log on to the Cleveland Free-Net?

You can 'telnet' any of the following:

Since about two weeks, I have a new strange behaviour in my ST (it
appeared about at the time the ABK-BBS'S Anti-Virus PROTECT6 was
distributed through bitnet. I use it, but I don't know if both
events are linked).

Some parts of the dialogs or menus resources becomes empty. This
is not limited to the .RSC files since my TEMPUS has also been corrupted.

Today this phenomena has appeared in a friend's ST, so I
suspect a virus.

The VKiller V3.84, doesn't detect any virus.

Hello.

Perhaps this is interesting news for you: There is a new version
of lharc (lharc 2.0) which has a new compression method. It packs
better than zip. I could send Thomas Quester's version to comp.binaries,
but I better ask him first...
Anyway, it has already been distributed through the Maus-net here in
Germany...

Ah, but is isn't "quite rightly so." You see, I didn't bother
stating all the permutations that I tried (it would take a few pages).
Some of the permutation I tried was declaring all functions as "int"
and then making sure that they in fact did return an "int" (value of 0
if I needed a dummy value). So even if the functions "assumed to return
ints", I had that covered.

There seems to be "something else" going wrong. That's why I
called it more generically "a referencing error." That was the best
way I could think of to describe an error caused by lack of support
for forward referencing.

My multiscanning monitor is an Acer 7015 Multiscanning Color Monitor. It cost
me about $450 dollars new at my Atari dealer. One problem: the IB Mult-Switch
adapter I use to hook up the monitor reaures a 9-pin analog RGB monitor port,
while the Acer has a 25-pin analog port. I had to buy a 9-25 pin adaptor cable
to hook things up.

The monochrome is not as sharp as a dedicated monochrome monitor, but still
very acceptable. And the color works just great.

I was using my 1040ST as a terminal emulator this afternoon
when a power surge (?) simultaneously killed the ST modem port
as well as the serial controller board on the host computer.

The serial controller board showed visible signs of heat damage
but the atari board looks flawless. Does this mean the atari
damage is minor?

Could someone recommend a good repair facility --- reliable,
inexpensive, and fast?

It is not the body itself but dry hair and certain types of clothing which
can generate static. Simply by avoiding woolen and synthetic fabrics it is
possible to considerably reduce the danger of static. I have never earthed
myself before handling delicate CMOS components but I take care to avoid
certain movements which generate static:

shuffling on carpetted floors,
ruffling, rubbing or scratching of the hair,
sleeves rubbing against the wrists.

I haven't fried a chip with static yet!
Also it is not good to have cats nearby. I once had a program crash because
a cat walked to close to the computer (no, it wasn't an ST)!

Pure cotton and linen generate virtually no static. I guess hemp and nettle
are also similar fabrics electrically (if you can get them).
Wear vegetable fibre!

Also it is a good idea to rinse the hands before starting.

I just realised that on 23 November 90, that I renewed my subscription
to STart for a nice sum of U.S. $69.95. "Now isn't that special"!
Now this is a lot of money for me but due to the service rendered,
a subscription is usually worth it. Since nothing has been sent to me
as far as subscription refunds or referrals, I'm wondering if there is
any legal recourse?
Secondly, I wrote a technical article on hard drives and another on
the HP DeskJet ink cartridges. I never was paid for these articles.
Thirdly, Atari Explorer, which I renewed my subscription to is late,
late, late.
Frankly, I'm getting a bit upset. Is there any legal way of getting
money back or subscriptions extended to Current Notes, or ST Informer?
I figure that I have lost about $100.00 on Atari magazines due to no
product and more money lost for unpaid articles.
